Sugar Bowl
Georgia (12-1, SEC Champions) vs. Florida State (9-4, ACC Champions)
Georgia comes into N'Awlins at full strength, and off the heels of their most successful season since their last SEC Championship team in 1983. With a 12-1 record, SEC Championship and #3 ranking in the BCS Standings, the 'Dawgs find themselves the with the opportunity to win 13 games for the first time in school history... On the other hand, Florida State comes to N'Awlins with a whimper as a list of off-field problems have left the Seminoles with no experience at QB and minus it's star defender ( DT Darnell Dockett ). After an incredible streak of 14 years in the Top 4, the 'Noles find themselves having their second straight 4 loss season.
The Georgia Bulldogs 2002 season was marked by it's greatest success in 2 decades. Behind 2nd year coach Mark Richt, the 'Dawgs 13 game regular season saw only one blemish ( 20-13 loss to Florida ) and it's first SEC Championship in 20 years. Ending the season on a high note, the 'Dawgs overwhelmed rival Georgia Tech ( 51-7 ) and Arkansas ( 30-3 ) in the SEC Championship game. Behind a solid (balanced) offensive attack, timely special teams play and stout defense, Georgia faces a Florida State program responsible for 'Dawg head coach Mark Richt's coaching tutorial. The 'Dawgs offense is led by Sophomore QB David Greene who's heady play is benefited by a Senior dominated OL ( All-SEC Jon Stinchcomb ( LT ) and Kevin Breedlove (LG ) are the standouts ) that is one of the nation's best. WR's Terrence Edwards ( Georgia's all-time leading receiver ) and Fred Gibson are both big play receivers. Especially Gibson, who is Georgia's main deep threat. RB Musa Smith registered the first 1,000 yard rushing season for UGA since Garrison Hearst ( 1992 )..... The Georgia defense is led by All-SEC LB's Boss Bailey ( OLB ), Tony Gilbert ( MLB ) and AP All-American DE David Pollack, who led the SEC in sacks. Helping Pollack provide excellent rush and pass pressure are DT's Jonathon Sullivan and Ken Veal. OLB Chris Clemons provides solid play in conjunction with Bailey and Gilbert. The secondary is the weakest part of the UGA defensive unit. CB's Bruce Thornton and Decory Bryant have improved as the year's gone on, while Safeties Kentrell Curry and Sean Jones are solid...... Georgia's special teams units are among the nation's best. PK Billy Bennett had a stretch late in the season with some misses, but seemed over them by the SEC Championship game. P Jonathon Kilgo is underappreciated, but provides length and placement for excellent coverage units. WR Damien Gary was Georgia's most successful return man, until a mid-season injury caused him to miss the end of the season. If healthy, he could provide a boost to the unit. If not, WR Fred Gibson and SS Sean Jones should fill in fine...... Head Coach Mark Richt ( 20-5 in 2 seasons at Athens ) seems over some of the mistakes he made last year in his first ever season as a head man. He has done a splendid job in getting the 'Dawgs prepared each week, and kept it up for 13 games. Along with Defensive Coordinator Brian VanGorder, Richt and the entire staff have been especially adept at second half adjustments throughout the season.
The Florida State Seminoles 2002 season has seen the 'Noles go from National Title Contender ( 4-0 start ) to National Title near-spoiler ( 28-27 loss to #1 Miami ) to ACC Champion and finally a BCS Bowl. In between, a QB controversy and Wide Left kick have painted this season as one of up's and down's. With the suspension of QB Chris Rix and dismissal of his backup Adrian McPherson, Legendary coach Bobby Bowden finds his 'Noles in a matchup against his former Offensive Coordinator, Mark Richt. As Georgia had to endure, FSU find's itself beat-up and missing some prime pieces to it's puzzle. Unlike the 'Dawgs, who've found themselves a complete team by now, the 'Noles go into the Sugar Bowl hurting on offense. Without star RB Greg Jones and possibly his backup Nick Maddox on the field, first time starting QB Fabian Walker will need to step up to cover 'Nole losses in talent. Walker will be bolstered by an experienced and talented OL ( led by All-American LT Brett Williams ). If he can go, RB Nick Maddox provides an excellent running threat and "escape clause" out of the backfield at receiving. If he can't, Leon Washington and Willie Reid will be the RB's. Maddox's health has improved in the last week, but how he'll be come game time is crucial. While there are questions at RB, at WR the 'Noles should be fine. Standout WR Anquan Boldin ( who could also see time at QB should Walker falter ) and Talman Gardner lead an athletic group of receivers...... With the loss of stud DT Darnell Dockett, the 'Noles DL will rely on star DE Alonzo Jackson and his counterpart Kevin Emanuel to provide pressure, and a solid presence against the run. OLB's Kendyll Pope and Michael Boulware are typical FSU LB's. Fast and furious, and will be relied upon heavily in pressure and coverage situations. The FSU secondary unit has improved much as the season has gone on. CB Stanford Samuels stands out as a lock-down corner, yet the FSU pass defense is susceptible to being burned...... On Special Teams, PK Xavier Beitia ( Miami game notwithstanding ) is a powerful leg and experienced kicker. P Chance Gwaltney is solid and FSU has a host of fleet footed return men should RB Nick Maddox be unable to return kicks..... The man almost solely responsible for the great history of FSU football over the last quarter century still leads the charge. Lengendary Head Coach Bobby Bowden ( 323-91-4 overall / 250-59-4 at FSU) has seen this season as the most difficult of his tenure in Tallahassee. Nonetheless, he finds his 'Noles as ACC Champions and playing in the new year again. With the seasoned Mickey Andrews and defensive coordinator at his side, Bowden has led the 'Noles through injuries and suspensions to a 9-4 season. Given enough time, the FSU staff is capable of preparing a depleted 'Noles squad for ANYONE.
This matchup finds Georgia at full strength and playing it's best ball down the stretch, while the Seminoles are depleted even coming off a win over rival Florida to end the regular season. The scenario of pupil ( Mark Richt ) versus teacher ( Bobby Bowden) will gather attention, but the seminal question of the 2003 Sugar Bowl is the play of FSU QB Fabian Walker. With their running game nicked up, and their passing defense questionable, Walker has no choice but to step-up and make big plays. Georgia should be able to put up 20-30 points on the FSU defense if their play of late continues. While the 'Dawgs have shown a propensity for scoring points, Walker has only 8 career attempts to his name and his offense will require him to throw the ball successfully for FSU to put points on the board. Georgia's front seven is good against the run, and quick enough to create pressure in the offensive backfield. If Walker isn't making plays consistently, and ruffles under the pressure, the Seminoles will be in for a long night.
Unfortunately, without RIX I don't think FLA ST stands a chance... but my bet was made on Dec 10 so hopefully things will work out though I doubt it...
