2004 NCAA Regular Season: 55-49 (+3.58*)

2003 NCAA Regular Season: 53-43 (+5.35*)
2003 NCAA Bowls: 7-7 (-0.42*)

STARTERS:

(1) College Bowl games are the ONLY time in my football capping in which I sort of START from a premise of trying to identify dogs with value before going on to other plays. At any other time of the year, from the first college game through the Super Bowl, I don't generally flinch if an 11' point divisional road favorite dressed in polyester jumps off the page as the most attractive play on the board - for the third week running.

(2) Last year's disappointing 7-7 Bowl season was at least partly - and I believe primarily - attributable to a wonderful trip to California from 12/20-12/28 in which capping was barely a blip on my radar, including the hectic days just before and just after the trip. My 9-4 Bowl record from the prior season (and my first full season posting college plays at Madjacks) is much more in line with my expectations for this season.

(3) I have a full season invested to this point in personnel, matchups, storylines, coaches, injuries, momentum, conferences - the whole nine yards - and there is no time like the present to put the info and angles at hand to use, before it's back to starting from scratch next season. MONEY MANAGEMENT is my wagering strength 24/7/365 across all sports, and my instincts have been telling me for weeks that there is absolutely no good reason not to bump my standard play to 1.50* throughout the Bowl season.

(4) I'll keep a tally of all my plays in this thread, but individual plays (including write-ups, newspaper links and the like) will be posted in seperate threads for each game and/or each day.

- - All the early leans and plays (which I remember as VaTech action taking the line from -7 to -6) had me taking a close look at taking Virginia Tech against the first undefeated SEC team since 1993(?), but I thought better of it, and appreciated getting a line with good value.

AU's special class has one more act (Huntsville Times - 1/3/04)

Washington Post
(12/4/04) - Excerpt -

The script appeared frustratingly familiar. The Virginia Tech football team seemed to be starting another late-season fade, this time in late October against Georgia Tech in Atlanta. With less than six minutes left, the Hokies, who had won three in a row (after losing two of their first four), were losing 20-12.

Down, but not out. Sparked by senior quarterback Bryan Randall, a new script was ordered just in time. Virginia Tech stormed back to prevail 34-20 and hasn't stalled since, producing victories against North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia. As a result, the No. 10 Hokies, in their inaugural ACC campaign, will play No. 9 Miami at the Orange Bowl on Saturday for the conference title and an automatic Bowl Championship Series berth.

A bunch of the questions Coach Frank Beamer fielded at his news conference (prior to the Miami game) centered on the challenge posed by the Hurricanes, which is understandable. This game, a Big East contest for the past 12 years, has evolved into an excellent rivalry. Yet there is little doubt that the triumph in Atlanta, equaling the second-biggest comeback in the Beamer era, has made this moment possible. The Hokies trailed 14-0 midway through the second quarter.

"We had to make plays at the end of the North Carolina game," Beamer said. "We had to come from behind against Virginia. I'm not sure we would have if we hadn't done what we did down at Georgia Tech."
