GMAC Bowl @ Mobile, AL

Bowling Green (-4.5) vs Memphis

Forcasted Weather: Mostly Cloudy, 80% Chance of precipitation and may be thunderstorms. 10-15. mph winds. Kickoff temp of 60. If weather holds true to forcasted, there is an advantage to Memphis which is a better running team. (Although both pass and run just as evenly.)
Traveling Distance: Bowling Green is 901.3 miles, while Memphis is 439.2 miles away from Mobile so there is a slight advantage to Memphis.

Bowling Green

Key Players:QB Omar Jacobs-165.9 pass efficiency, 68% comp, 3637 yds, 36 TDs, only 3 INTs

WR: Cole Magner 678 yds & 6TDs. Charles Sharon 953 yds & 13 TDs. Steve Sanders 861 yds & 6 TDs

All MAC players:LB Jovon Burkes, DB Keon Newson (NFL Bound), LT Rob Warren, C Scot Mruczkouski (NFL prospect), QB Omar Jacobs (Only a Soph, but MAC Offensive MVP)

Tit bits: The Falcons defeated Memphis in the AMF Bowling Challege. Winner of this 4rd annual even also won the game. Advantage BG

Memphis

Key Players:QB Danny Wimprine 55% Comp, 2568 yds, 18 TDs, but 13 INTs

WR: Tavares Gideon 627yds & 11TDs. Maurice Avery 371 yds & 0 TDs. Darron White 327 yds & 1 TD

RB: DeAngelo Williams 1828 yds, 6.2 avg/carry, 21 rush TDs, 206 yds rec, 1 rec TD

All Con USA players:DB Wesley Smith, OL Gene Frederic, & their Kicker

Analysis:Bowling Green is 3-0 in bowl games. Bowling Green's 3 loses came to N. Illinois, Oklahoma, and Toledo. They all ran the ball effectively, but note that all of these loses game away. Oklahoma is #2 in the country, Toledo is a great team with a good quarterback who should go to the NFL and BG blow a 28 point lead, and I think N. Illinois just took BG by suprise. Also these teams dominated BG's small defensive front (257 lbs avg) with their large 300 lb avg OL. Memphis should not be as imposing with their avg OL weighing in at 282 lbs.

Bowling Green also proved that they can play good on the road, blowing out many teams that they should beat and keep it close with others. Whereas Memphis has had trouble especially on the road. They almost lost to (2-9)East Carolina 38-35. Should have lost to (3-8)Arkansas State, but scored 28 points in the 4th quarter. Lost to (7-4)UAB 28-35 and got blown out by (6-5)Cincy 10-49. Memphis is however come close to beating Louisville at home by losing 56-49. However, Memphis is not playing at home, they are on the road. So being that Memphis is a horrible road team and Bowling Green does good on the road, there is a HUGE advantage to Bowling Green.

In looking at the matchups, Bowling Green has a huge advantage at QB with Omar Jacobs who has the 5th highest pass efficiency in the nation with 36 TDs and only 3 INTs. Bowling Green spreads the field evenly with many widerecievers getting receptions, yards and TD's. Even the Falcon's RB more reception yards and TD's than Memphis' #2 reciever. Memphis QB Wimprine throws almost as often but it also comes with alot of interceptions (13). Wimprine only seems to have one go to WR in Gideon. look for NFL bound Newson to key in on Gideon's side of the ball and pick the hell out of Wimprine, if not knowck the hell out of Gideon as he is a fierce hitter, causing many fumbles. At running back Memphis has a big edge with 3rd team All American Williams. However, Warren and crew should stop at least he big running plays by stacking 7-8 guys in the box as S. Miss did against North Texas. Yeah, Memphis is a 2 dimensional team (unlike N. Texas being a running team), but with only one go to WR and Newson keying in on him. Look for Williams to have a less than par game.
Overall, Bowling Green's offense is more balanced and consistent as their QB does not throw interceptions and can go deep to put up points in a hurry. Memphis seems to have a not as balance offense as some would think with their QB throwing interceptions and having one WR making all the TD receptions and yardage. Look to see Memphis come out running the ball and Bowling Green to stack the box to test Wimprine's arm. Defensive edge also goes to Bowling Green as they have Newson and Burkes as an anchor. Bowling Green also has +14 turnover stat while Memphis is at 0. Bowling Green will aslo be palying hard as they do not want to end the season coming off a bitter defeat to Toledo.
Quotes and sayings: A Sr. Linebacker said, "We didn't want to go out the way we did against Toledo"

Memphis coach compared Bowling Green to Loiusville, a team they lost to 49-56. Whereas Bowling Green coach compared Memphis to Marshall, a team they beat 56-35. Coaches seem to know more about the other team than us, therefore if the coaches are right Bowling Green should win. Only doubt I may have is the weather may affect the game to be slightly on Memphis' side. But in looking at it, Memphis throws the ball almost as much, meaning Wimprine will be throwing more interceptions than usual with a wet ball.
Comments are welcome esp if you disagree. This is one of my bigger plays this bowl game season. But Oregon State tops my list so far. Other games I'm looking at are Hawaii, UCLA, Miami Ohio, Toledo, and Pittsburg. Good Luck and hope this info helps.

FYI, my current bowl game record is 2-0. Lets keep on rolling.

Great post......agree with all that you said. I'm with you on BG, they have been good to me all year. BG +14 in the turnover ratio and it's gonna be raining. Wet ball = turnovers

Give me Bowling Green !!

Great write up! Wish the conditions were a little dryer but I'm still going to pound BG! They will score regardless of the conditions with their lethal offense. Just hope they can play some kind of 'D'!

Another bowl game in the bag. Off to a hot 3-0 start, gotta keep it rolling, but gonna enjoy the moment and suck um up tonight. Hopefully I can wake up early enough to research thursday's games. Leaning on Marshall and UCLA, but I gotta really look at it first.
