First of all let me tell you about our junior prom last nite.We had over 300 students and not one single problem.Opps..just one...one of our girls had an arguement with her boyfriend 5 minutes into the dance. We are at a nice hotel and she's crying in the lobby calling her parents to pick her up.I intercede...and ask her to try going in and staying for half an hour.If you feel the same and want to go home call later..She agreed....but that wasn't the problem...4 hours and 45 minutes later...2 teachers of mine come up to me and say...look in the corner...these 2 kids are making out ...a little to hot and heavy on the dance floor...yes...it was the couple that had the arguement in the beginning of the dance...Now some of you are saying..why that story.Well,I;m proud of my kids there was some deja vue with that incident......Not one other incident except me telling two kids to " cool it a little"....no fights..no drinking..no drugs...I know i'm biased but my girls in my HS are the most beautiful in NY state. There prom dresses,corsages,hair,etc...wow..my guys all in Tux's...limo drivers..Wow...
We do have breathilizers at the door when you come into the dance. There disposable and if I think or suspect anyone drinking we make you blow into the breathlizer..Our Motto is " don't blow ..you go".Now we have been doing it for the past 4 years at our senior and jr proms..Kids all know that they will not be allowed in if they refuse or come out positive... is it legal.. hell no...the minute we get challenged by it we fold our up our tents...but the parents support me though....The youth of America sometimes gets a bad rap..I read things in the papers or watch on TV and see so many horror stories about shootings, drugs, etc in HS's all over. But there are a lot of HS's that are great and kids are learning, etc.
I had a great time...and yes I did dance with my students...remember I took dance lessons with my wife when my Texas daughter got married last June..The songs have changed..still like Wilson Pickett,Smokey Robinson,Temps,4 Tops and Sly and his family....
There was some "deja vue"..At my jr prom in 1968...I was dancing to close to a girl..and had the chaperone come over to me and say...to close in that slow dance..lets see some space and tuck your shirt in..." Who would think 39 yrs later I'm on the other end of that...And the chaperone was Ralph Branca...Dodger pitcher who gave up Thompson's HR in the '51 series..His daughter went to that school and I think she married Bobby Valentine later..
As Paul Harvey says...." and that is the rest of this long and boring story...
Be back with a few plays...hit a 9 team parlay last nite with long beach being the final game.Got home late..with 52 seconds left LB was up by 9...yes.. I was dancing in front of my computer...
