Is there any sense to betting on a sport that is as pathetic as basketball?

It appears to me that there is no intellectual way to analyze or handicap these games anymore.

Why go through the frustration and time spent in TRYING to handicap a game or series if these jackasses don't put forth an honest effort.

I've already put my first through one LCD screen. I'm not about to waste my time watching another garbage NBA Finals game.

Whether you are a Spurs fan or Pistons fan, it doesn't matter. You might as well be a freakin' Hawks fan because your championship means nothing.

ive always said its damn near impossible to cap the nba. i still feel that way. theres very little consistency.

that said, it certainly isnt a pathetic sport or league.

while im not a huge fan of the nba, the league definitely has the best athletes in the world and more athleticism on display on a given night than any other pro sports league.

and frankly, i think the majority b1tch just to b1tch.

the two teams in the finals are both teams who (to use the media cliche) playing the game the right way.

no me-first superstars. lots of hustle on both sides. teams actually playing defense. whats wrong with that?

do i get annoyed with guys like sprewell and artest? sure. but that doesnt mean the league doesnt have a ton of great players.

I did lose a bet, but that is not the reason why I feel so strongly about my statements.

I'm not so sure NBA athletes are the most athletic in the world. Being able to hang in the air so you can put a ball through a hoop doesn't make you the most athletic. But I won't get into that debate.

I don't deny that the league has great players, but for every great player there are ten, if not more, playground dunk artists.

Agree, disagree, it's all the same to me. I've never been a "real" NBA fan. I've been a Heat fan since '92 and finally had a reason to get excited, but I wouldn't shed a tear if the NBA went away.

Interesting take on a misnomer that has been tossed around for some years now!

Just what is it that makes the NBA players the best athletes in the world? :mj07: ....................................

I will leave it at that, lets see what transpires?

P.S. Iodiota, somehow, I seem to have my second best record gambling of any sport on the NBA!
I think its because you need to look at emotion more than numbers in this league :)

nba basketball players play fball more easily than the other way around ... I dont recall any college fball player making the nba w/o playing the sport too in college; it's happened the other way around more times than I can mention, from cornell green to antonio gates etc etc ... ainge played baseball, chuck connors, gene conley, debusschere, even MJ in minors (tho this was more a lounge act obviously) ... Bo, Deion, and Brian Jordan played fball and baseball ... But i just dont see guys from baseball or Fball making cold turkey jump into NBA ... Moss thought he could do it, and hes prob best athlete around, but he wasnt even close as far as I heard ... Don James once told me he loved to watch a prospect play basketball in HS b/c he could tell more about his athleticism than when he watched him play fball ...

the best athletes are prob gymnasts, but they are 5'6 and like to do somersaults, more conducive to stopping Jackie Chan than Tiny Archibald on the dribble drive.

(i did not attempt to even name all the crossover athletes, so if you feel compelled to add to list, pleez do--this was from top of my head)

I've always found the play-offs much harder to get a handle on than the reg. season.
There's a lot more focus on the refs, and with (generally) 2 evenly matched teams, just a small fall/lift in intensity can make a big difference.
Also the books more often than not get the totals absolutely spot on during the play-offs! How do they do it!

ATHLETES.....

NBA has some of the greatest athletes. But thats part of the problem. The league needs more basketball players. Guys who know how to play the game.
Larry Bird was a terrible athlete. Magic Johnson was not a great athlete. But they were great PLAYERS. The list could go on and on of decent athletes who are good players and good athletes who are decent players.

The problem with sports these days is that everyone wants to get the 5 best athletes for basketball or 11 best athletes for football and just go with it. You need athletes but you also need guys with skills and brains. You need variety. You need chemistry.

What you get is 5 guys who can run and jump vs. 5 other guys who can run and jump. So, by default, a team with 5 guys who can run and jump will win.

Every sport is just being turned into a track meet full of idiots with no strategy. Look at football. There's no strategy to play-calling any more. Just see if a receiver can beat a DB one on one.

I could go on, but yeah, the problem is that today's player is an athlete and not a player. Today's player is Randy Moss instead of Jerry Rice.

And I will add that its not 100%. There are some really good players/people in sports today. But there just seem to be so few. Coaches as well. I see some of the dumbest shit called in football. There are very few fundamentals left and like I say, play-calling in football, esp. college is awful.

And one other thing. You definitely do want athletes on your team. And you want them to use their athleticism. But you don't need all 5 guys to be slashers that want to drive and dunk every play. You need shooters and passers and dribblers etc. to compliment the slashers and vice versa.

They are not athletes. In my view, they are entertainers. A Gymnast is an athlete, a triathlete participant is an athlete. You throw your $$$ at people who can't count to eleven without taking their shoes off. Think about it. A man makes 25 million a year and can't sink a foul shot. Think about that. a 6'7", 350 lb individual who has difficulty chewing gum and winding his watch simultaneously is by definition not an athlete.

I have found the opposite to be true for me. Other than NCAA footbal, the NBA playoffs are my favorite for sports wagering.

good points TD ... about the mixture, I can attest, Magic and Bird are def. the smartest 2 players Ive ever seen but almost never dunked .... I played a ton of basketball from age 7 to now, I am/was an avg. athlete but a heady PG (my sister can jump higher than me) but i could always pass and did little things like watch back and quick hand balls off jump shooters or take charges, my teams seldom lost and guys who were damn good college players liked playing with me cuz I could get them the ball where they could score ... I look for kids like that to fit into my teams as a coach too ... the whole is greater than the parts in the hoop chemistry ingredients ... Some perfect examples of that were Charles Oakley & Dennis Rodman, they had some holes in their game but what they could add made their teams great ...

your probably correct

But i'd hate to go one on one with him because he would destroy me, and I can chew gum while winding my watch and making a free throw.

After hours and hours of intense analysis and preparation for this pivotal and "competitive" Game 5 that I am not going to watch, I am leaning towards the UNDER.

I figure I'll be rooting happily for even more turnovers, blocked shots, missed shots, steals and everything else we have seen from these two teams that past four pathetic games.
