UH's top rebounder Gueye out for year with knee injury

By Dayton Morinaga
Advertiser Staff Writer

Ahmet Gueye, the starting center for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team, will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
The Rainbow Warriors will be without Gueye for tonight's regular-season home finale against Louisiana Tech and next week's WAC Tournament at Reno, Nev.

"It's a shame for it to happen anytime," Hawai'i head coach Riley Wallace said. "But this late in the season makes it even more of a shame."

Gueye, a 6-foot-7 junior, is averaging 12.2 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds per game. He also leads the WAC with 65 blocked shots, and is considered the team's best defensive player.

He sustained the injury during Friday's practice. He landed awkwardly after finishing a dunk during a half-court drill.

Chris Botez, a 7-foot senior, will replace Gueye in the starting lineup.
and that would leave no forwards or centers on the bench.
