i think its bullshit that brown decides to do this when they are still playing the season. no respect at all. this is a digrace and im livid. how can he do this right now during a critical playoff series? if i am any player on detroit, i would feel like quitting, because thats what my coach just did on us.

un-real!

Report: Larry Brown to become Cavaliers president
May 31, 2005

BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - In the midst of a difficult job of trying to get the Detroit Pistons to repeat as NBA champions, the nomadic Larry Brown reportedly has lined up his next job.

Brown will become the president of the Cleveland Cavaliers when the Pistons' season is over, according to a report Monday night on ESPN.com.

The website cited two unidentified NBA sources that were told by Brown that he will accept the offer from the Cavaliers, who reportedly are on the verge of naming Indiana Pacers assistant Mike Brown - no relation - as their new coach.

Brown has three years remaining on a five-year contract with the Pistons, who are in a 2-1 hole in the Eastern Conference finals and host Miami on Tuesday night.

The Cavaliers would be the eighth NBA team for Brown, 64, a Hall of Fame coach who has made a career of winning wherever he goes - and often leaving unexpectedly.

Two years ago, he left the Philadelphia 76ers to join the Pistons, who had fired coach Rick Carlisle less than a week earlier. In 1983, he was coaching the New Jersey Nets in the postseason while negotiating to become the coach at Kansas University.

The position as president would not involve much travel and allow Brown to address his health issues. He had hip surgery in November and has been bothered by another issue which he intends to address in the offseason.

Brown has refused to comment on whether he had spoken with Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, a long-time Detroit area resident who bought the team earlier this season and cleaned house when Cleveland collapsed down the stretch and missed the playoffs.

It's not a surprise, but you would think that he would learn after awhile. Can't believe it will help Detroit, but you never know.

...Larry Brown is a strange dude.

He has had a number of situations that were great and had very promising futures and he just got up and left. I wonder who will take the Piston job? Lot of talent, but very much a sum is greater than the parts. Could be delicate. Rasheed Wallace, alone, is one of the greater coaching challenges out there.

Is the "other" Brown just holding the Cav job for year until Larry takes over? ...Not the way you want to go into a big game.

one of greatest coaches of all time ... and def. the #1 vagabond ... I wonder why Commish allows owners to talk to coaches during playoffs anyhow--never a stern fan anyway, lil too smug for me ...

"jump at a chance to leave detroit"

???????????

what? that makes no sense. carlisle is the 2nd best coach in the league and he got ran out by dumars. brown isnt "jumping" at any chance here lowell. the guy is sick. i understand being a president of a club and being a coach of a club when your hip is about to fall off are 2 totally different jobs. brown already said he wanted to coach the pistons next year if he was healthy. it doesnt look like he is going to be healthy. the best move for him would be to be upstairs. im not "all-for" this desicion because i think larry brown is one of the greatest coaches ever, but its the best decision for him. the point here is that this transaction and talks should not be made during the eastern conference finals when you are down 2 games to 1. thats what ticks me off about this. as far as browns deiscion, its the best for him.

to say that coaches "jump" at the chance to leave detroit is just plain dumb. get real.

another example: dumars retires from detroit, comes back and put together a winning franchise with the acquistion of rasheed walllace and earns executive of the year. i wonder if he is looking to "jump" boat too!

I really like Larry Brown but this really is wrong. Why couldn't this wait? Its not like he will start working on his Cavs plans while the Pistons are still alive...or will he?

i heard some interesting tid-bits on the radio this mornng. First, Brown is still denying he has talked to the Cavs. Second, that the Pistons will not get any compensation because the same parent company has holdings in both Pistons and Cavs.

Terrible timing. My source is a Detroit sports-talk host and he tried to put a positive spin on it by saying everyone knew Brown was going to leave and was cool with it, but athletes don't work that way. It will be very interesting to see what kind of reaction he gets in Detroit, tonight.

What's happening with the betting lines?

Jalen:

He's gone. Too much smoke not to be fire. At this point, Brown denying it is as much of distraction as anything else. Bad timing for Pistion's fans. Can't see how it will have a positive effect on the team.

id rather brown be the coach, but what can you do when the guy is sick?

oh well, i really hope it doesnt distract this team tonight, and throughout the series. im also curious to hear the reaction from fans tonight in detroit when he gets announced.

I will be there and I will not boo. Won't exactly cheer, but won't boo. From the day he was hired, we knew he would leave like this, he does it everywhere. He secretly met with the Pistons while he was the Philly coach.... granted he wasn't in the ECF at the time.

This has been in the news in detroit since before game 3. I don't think it affected the team during that game... seeing they had the lead and a chance to win with 7 minutes left.

Joe D new exactly what he was getting when he brought in LB. He got a championship out of the deal, so it was well worth it. The good thing about LB leaving is we might finally get to see Darko and Delfino play. LB ran Okur out of here, if he stayed another year, who knows who else he might have PO'd

I will be there too and I'm not gonna cheer either. LB too me is overated big time. Last year we won but not because of him. He's been around for 33 years and won 2 championships ( one in college). Not a good ratio. And he was the first coach who lost olympics with pro on his roster. Joe Dumars should fire his ass right now and take over. Too me LB is a big zero.
