2007 Brewers regular season wins 81'

?In: RHP Jeff Suppan, C Johnny Estrada, IF Craig Counsell, RHP Claudio Vargas.

?Out: RHP Tomo Ohka, IF Jeff Cirillo.

?Camp quandary: They must figure out who's going to play the outfield and whether Geoff Jenkins remains part of their plans. Bill Hall and Corey Hart likely have two spots, but they have to chose a third outfielder from among Jenkins, Brady Clark, Kevin Mench, Gabe Gross, Anthony Gwynn, and Laynce Nix.

?Keep an eye on: Closer Derrick Turnbow. He lost his job to Francisco Cordero last summer after his second half meltdown (11.29 ERA), and now the Brewers want to see whether he can adapt to a setup role or if they should put him on the trade market

Geoff Jenkins remains hot this spring, going 2-for-3 with a homer off Felix Hernadnez on Sunday.

Jenkins is 15-for-33 with 11 RBI. Kevin Mench is hitting .393 with a 0/4 K/BB ratio in 28 at-bats, so both potential platoonmates are playing well. The Brewers should be able to move one of the two before Opening Day if they feel they need to.

Though Gabe Gross missed the first two weeks of exhibition play with a strained right hamstring, GM Doug Melvin said on a radio show that he expected Gross to make the Brewers' Opening Day roster.

Gross played his first game in the outfield Thursday after being restricted to designated hitter duty and pinch-hitting for a week. He'll be used as a backup outfielder and pinch-hitter for the Brewers

Laynce Nix said Monday that the strained oblique he suffered six days ago is feeling better.

"I was able to get loose for the first time today, to the point where I could do more resistance and rotational work," he said, referring to weightlifting exercises. "It was still pretty low-intensity, but hopefully it will get me on the right track." Nix is expected to open the year in Triple-A.

Derrick Turnbow's flawless spring came to an end Saturday, as he gave up three runs in two-thirds of an inning against the Padres.

Turnbow walked his third and fourth batters of the spring. He was sharp enough in his previous seven appearances that he only needs a decent final week to enter the season as the top setup man for Francisco Cordero.

First impression: The Brewers haven't finished with a winning record since 1992, the first year of the Phil Garner era and the last year Bud Selig was just the owner of the franchise and not the owner/commissioner. Now, with Ben Sheets, Chris Capuano, Jeff Suppan, Dave Bush and Claudio Vargas, it appears they've assembled a quality starting rotation, assuming Sheets' shoulder holds up. They upgraded one of the league's least productive offenses with switch-hitting catcher Johnny Estrada, and otherwise will rely on Prince Fielder, Bill Hall (35 home runs, up from a previous career-high of 17) and Geoff Jenkins, who had a big September, wasn't traded, and apparently will be back for his 10th season in Milwaukee.

Competition: The Brewers have plenty of outfielders, the only sure job being Hall's in center field. The most likely scenario has Corey Hart in left field and Jenkins in right, though Kevin Mench could win left field outright, Hart could win right field outright, or Jenkins and Mench could platoon in one corner. Gabe Gross, who hit .294 in 187 at-bats against right-handers, won't be forgotten, either.

Healing: Corey Koskie continues to suffer from post-concussion syndrome, which already has cost him half a season and threatens at least some of this one as well. Veterans Tony Graffanino and Craig Counsell will compete for playing time at third base, a situation that could become a platoon.

Next: Ryan Braun, 23, is the longshot candidate at third base if Koskie is unable to perform. He hit .303 with 15 home runs and 40 RBI in 59 games in the Southern League last season.
