Ballard a game-time decision against Devils

It just seems like the Canucks have gone as long without playing as Alex Burrows has.

Having played just one game in the last nine days, and that was last Tuesday, the Canucks are chomping at the bit for the puck to drop Monday night.

?I think my players are sick of practices,? Alain Vigneault joked as he came off the ice following Sunday morning's skate. ?Are you guys [Sunday's small collection of reporters] as anxious for a game as we are??

The Canucks had a good hour of working on game-like situations, including the power play, penalty kill and five-on-five play that simulated one side being down a goal and the other up a goal with under three minutes to play.

Earlier in the break the Canucks worked on such things as the shootout, a first in Vigneault's reign.

?All in all, this is a longer break than we're used to at this time of the year, but I think we used it well,? Vigneault said.

The game against the Devils marks the beginning of four games in six nights.

Roberto Luongo will start in goal tonight and Vigneault said he'd decide after the game who will play Tuesday night in Edmonton.

Keith Ballard took part in his first full-contact practice with his teammates and pronounced himself totally symptom-free from his concussion.

"I felt good," said Ballard, who hasn't played since suffering a concussion on Oct. 15 at Los Angeles. "The last couple of days have been a good progression."

He could start against the Devils, depending on how he feels Monday.

?I would say he might be a game-time decision," Vigneault said.

Mason Raymond was back skating after taking five days off to rest a bruised bone in his hand that's been bothering him for some time now.

Dan Hamhuis skated for about 20 minutes before his teammates did, but is still out indefinitely with a bruise on the ball of his foot.

?He still feels some discomfort,? Vigneault said, ?and until he's feeling better he won't be able to play.?

The coach didn't know if Hamhuis would travel with the team for the games in Edmonton on Tuesday and on Thursday at Colorado.

Ryan Parent left practice early, to rest a sore groin, but Andrew Alberts, who hurt his knee in the last game, declared he's ready to go against the Devils.

The New Jersey game marks the 10th and final game Alex Burrows has to sit out after being placed on the long-term injury reserve to start the season. He's eligible to return Tuesday night at Edmonton.

?He's fine, he's ready to go. I would not dare tell him he's not playing Tuesday,? Vigneault said. ?He's going to play.?

LOYAL SOLDIER: There won?t be quite the hype as there was the last time the Canucks and Devils met. That was last Dec. 2 in New Jersey and the game, won 5-2 by the Canucks, was viewed as a grudge match of sorts between Luongo and Martin Brodeur, who were battling to see who would be the starting goalie for Canada at the Olympics.

Luongo ultimately ended up with that job and said Sunday Brodeur handled the demotion about as well as could be expected.

?He was okay, he wasn?t moping around or anything like that,? Luongo said. ?He was still upbeat and supportive.?

Luongo will start Monday night for the Canucks, who are expected to go with Cory Schneider on Tuesday night in Edmonton
