2007 (AP)? Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver early Monday morning.

Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. from the scene of the shooting and told him three people had been shot and that Williams had been killed.

A little after 2 a.m., a white Hummer limousine was sprayed with bullets from a vehicle that pulled up along its side, said Sonny Jackson, spokesperson for the Denver Police Department.

Three people in the limousine were hit and were taken to area hospitals, where one man was pronounced dead, Jackson said. The other man and woman who were shot were not identified.

Jackson said police were searching for the suspects and interviewing witnesses.

"We have no motive yet," Jackson said. "We're hoping to talk with witnesses to find out where they were coming from, and that might give us some clues."

Saccomano said he spoke with coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization.

"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.

Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race.

The 24-year-old Williams finished the season with 88 tackles, 78 of them solo, and four interceptions.

On Sunday against the 49ers, he had three tackles and returned two punts for 50 yards before leaving the game with a shoulder injury late in the second half.

Williams, a second-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State in 2005, made an immediate impact on the Broncos, starting nine times in his rookie season following a stellar career at Oklahoma State, where he totaled 11 interceptions and scored three touchdowns on punt returns.

Players and coaches are off Monday. They were scheduled to meet Tuesday before heading home for the offseason.

That really is sad. Darrent was a hell of a player at OSU and had a bright future in the NFL. Gotta wonder what was the motive. Hopefully the killers will be caught.
RIP Darrent Williams

Why does it have to be Negros with guns ? Couldn't it be people with guns, in that situation ? Could we also say that people who think and reason like you = pea size brains = some kind of mental dysfunction = inbreeding ?? Just wondering.

Yeah, is it necessary to bring the racial card into this? :nono: Obviously you are trying to stir up conversation here and too bad it had to be due to someone else dying...you're an idiot. Not to mention that I have not seen one report of the shooters being African-American so that is just way out of line on a public forum.

The outlying issue is guns = murders. This country has mini civil wars going on everywhere from coast to coast due to guns. Where I live in Philly, there was a near record of 400 murders in 2006 alone! I am not saying to get rid of the right of citizens to bear arms completely, but there definitely needs to be stricter laws made on a) where they can be purchased, manufactured and imported from and b) who can be qualified to buy them. You look at murder rates in other sophisticated countries with tougher gun laws such as our neighbors to the north and across Europe and the murders number below 100.

you have said some pretty cruel things just funnin around, but thats pretty cold dude.

I would have to say that there is a 98% chance the shooter is black.

Millionaires got to club. Flash the cash. Bling bling with the threads and jewelry.

Everyone knows NFL players in the house.

Someone in NFL party group looks wrong at someone, Spills a drink, disrespects, says something to a woman they are not with,
Goes ahead in line, etc etc.

Words are exchanged.

Perps go outside get in their Yukin with tinted glass and wait. Oh yeh there is the white hummer
limo.

Lets gat them mf, pull up, lets do this.

bam bam bam bam bam....

it seems so easy to avoid this.

I know that I could.

lets be REALLY honest here ! the guy was more than likely black or hispanic, undoubtedly involved in drug trade, between 21-31 years old, had only one parent(more than likely mother), repeat offender with no more than 9th or 10 th grade education! people have to realize there are thousands of these type out there with guns who just don't care about life, theirs or yours! gun control is non exsistent in u.s.and until it changes(never) people like darrent williams will be gunned downed everyday of the week!

In 2003, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter was shot outside a Denver sports bar, and last April, Nuggets guard Julius Hodge was shot while driving on Interstate 76 in Denver. Both shootings occurred after disturbances at nightclubs and neither case has been solved.

Hodge, who played Tuesday night for the first time since he was shot five times April 8, said Williams' killing brought back nightmares of the night he was attacked.

"I pray every night for him and his family and friends," Hodge said. "They haven't found who shot me and I've pretty much let it go, but I pray that they find whoever shot him."

Sounds like these nightclub arguments go hand in hand with getting shot.

I think it would be better to go to the club, pick up the woman, put them in the Hummer , and take them back to the main house to party out.

Lets see, party without fear, or get shot in the head, hmmm.

Theories on killing abound
Police, mum on a motive, follow leads. Witnesses and others say trash talking or an attempt to steal from Williams may have started an altercation.

An argument before the killing of Denver Broncos player Darrent Williams could have been sparked by trash talking over the team's New Year's Eve defeat, an attempt to steal the young athlete's jewelry or the flashing of gang signs, according to witnesses, family members and sources close to the team.

A team of Denver police detectives is tracking down dozens of leads, said police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance tapes from the New Year's Eve party that Williams attended at the Shelter nightclub at 1037 Broadway shortly before he was shot to death.

The party was in part a birthday celebration for Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin. Several Broncos players attended, including Javon Walker, D.J. Williams and Brandon Marshall, according to witnesses.

Police are also looking at tapes from any traffic cameras that may have filmed events as the limo carrying Darrent Williams and others traveled from the club to the shooting location near Speer Boulevard and West 11th Avenue, Jackson said.

Denver police wouldn't say Tuesday whether they know the motive for the shooting. Jackson would say only that the argument at the Shelter may or may not be a factor.

Police continued searching for the killer who fired at least 14 bullets into the side of the stretch Hummer carrying Williams. The shooter may have been inside a white SUV Chevrolet Tahoe or Suburban, police said.

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan choked back emotion when talking about Williams at a news conference Tuesday. "You never know why God takes somebody, but I know one thing: He got somebody very special in Darrent," Shanahan said.

Outside Williams' townhome in Parker, family members shielded his mother, Rosalind Williams, with a blanket to give her privacy.

Demond Williams emerged from the home with a photograph of his nephew. It showed him smiling and posing with teammates.

"Just pray for us," Demond Williams said. "This is very difficult."

The 24-year-old player who had been a high school standout and a star at Oklahoma State University "meant so much to us," Demond Williams said.

An argument at the club involved Williams' friends, who were members of a rap group the Broncos cornerback was promoting on his record label, Ryno Entertainment, his uncle said.

"The guys got into it with some people," Demond Williams said. "The altercation was more an argument. No one put hands on each other.

"Guys were jealous about the way they were carrying themselves," he said.

Williams wouldn't have been involved in any fighting, his uncle said. "Darrent was always the one trying to squash it," he said.

A witness who asked not to be identified because he fears for his safety said he saw men, including Marshall, get out of the stretch limo in front of the club about 1:30 a.m. and start chasing someone.

People were leaving both the Shelter and Vinyl, a nightclub across the street, at the same time. The witness said about 700 people were spilling out the front door to leave when the altercation began.

"One thing I heard was someone tried to snatch Darrent Williams' chain and necklace," the witness said.

Shea Hasan, 22, who was at the Shelter that night, said she saw an altercation as she walked out of the club but didn't hear what the arguing was about.

She said she saw Williams standing next to a group of people who were arguing with another group of people on the sidewalk outside the club, but Williams wasn't involved in the fight and did not appear to say anything.

Dave Maddux, bar manager at Broadways down the street from the Shelter, said he saw the club emptying out.

"The Hummer was right in front. Some people told me that on their way in, there was trouble with a big group - probably someone special going to the club," Maddux said. "There was a yelling match because people got out of a big vehicle and basically cut in front of a lot of other people in line.

Sources close to the Broncos, who were not at the party, said they heard that the argument stemmed from trash talking over the team's loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Williams' family is preparing to have his body returned to Texas for his funeral Saturday at Great Commission Baptist Church. The entire Broncos team will fly to Texas for the funeral.

"He's in a better place now," Shana han said.

Also Tuesday, Nicole Reindl, a 21-year-old woman who was in the limousine and was shot in the head, was sent home from the hospital to recover.

Another shooting victim, Brandon Flowers, was released Monday.

Staff writers Claire Martin, Marc J. Spears, Mike Klis and Bill Williamson contributed to this report.
