Arnie Stapleton, of the Associated Press, reports Denver Broncos CB Darrent Williams was shot and killed early Monday morning, Jan. 1, in a drive-by shooting. Broncos' spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. from the scene of the shooting and told him three people had been shot and that Williams had been killed. Police are searching for suspects and interviewing witnesses. Williams was 24 years old. KFFL sends their condolences to Williams' friends and family and to the entire Broncos organization on their tragic loss.

Very sad news. Don't put yourself in a situation where you should have to carry a gun then you won't need one. I carry one but I have a permit to carry one. These players carry them without permits into clubs, bars, and places they shouldn't be hanging out at and where they aren't permitted.

That really is sad. Darrent was a hell of a player at OSU and had a bright future in the NFL. Gotta wonder what was the motive. Hopefully the killers will be caught.

2007 (AP)? Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver early Monday morning.

Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. from the scene of the shooting and told him three people had been shot and that Williams had been killed.

A little after 2 a.m., a white Hummer limousine was sprayed with bullets from a vehicle that pulled up along its side, said Sonny Jackson, spokesperson for the Denver Police Department.

Three people in the limousine were hit and were taken to area hospitals, where one man was pronounced dead, Jackson said. The other man and woman who were shot were not identified.

Jackson said police were searching for the suspects and interviewing witnesses.

"We have no motive yet," Jackson said. "We're hoping to talk with witnesses to find out where they were coming from, and that might give us some clues."

Saccomano said he spoke with coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization.

"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.

Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race.

The 24-year-old Williams finished the season with 88 tackles, 78 of them solo, and four interceptions.

On Sunday against the 49ers, he had three tackles and returned two punts for 50 yards before leaving the game with a shoulder injury late in the second half.

Williams, a second-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State in 2005, made an immediate impact on the Broncos, starting nine times in his rookie season following a stellar career at Oklahoma State, where he totaled 11 interceptions and scored three touchdowns on punt returns.

Players and coaches are off Monday. They were scheduled to meet Tuesday before heading home for the offseason.

Saw a little bit on the local news about it...apparently Darrent Williams was at a NYE party hosted by none other than Denver Nugget and eternal struggle Kenyon Martin.

There was an altercation but Williams left and was in a Hummer limo w/ 14 other people including Denver Bronco Javon Walker.

2 or 3 other people were shot but I don't think anyone else was killed. However, they showed Javon Walker arriving at the Broncos complex with his clothes covered in blood...

really unfortunate, he was a flamboyant but likeable player and a key guy for the Broncos

do you think having a permit wouldve avoided this :shrug:.according to you they shouldnt go out to a nightclub.are you kidding ?everytime they go out or are in their hometown they are in a situation where they maybe a target.unless your a pro athlete millionare in your 20's i dont know how you can compare yourself to these guys.

No! But having a permit keeps you from getting arrested for carrying a firearm. I never said they shouldn't go to a nightclub. There are plenty of places that they can go without being around thugs. Go to a bar or a lounge and stay away from the hoodrats that hang out at nightclubs. And, how in the hell are they are a target? If that was the case, Pacman Jones would have been shot a long time ago for being such an ass. He drives around the bars in his Ferrari all the time and never has any problems. I see several of these players out on a daily basis. The only problem these guys deal with are fans wanting their autographs. I'm not comparing myself to these guys. I do own a million dollar business but I'm not in my 20's and I'm smart enough not to go to clubs where problems occur. Very unfortunate accident, feel bad for his family and friends.

He was shot in the neck and fell into Javon Walker's lap where he died almost instantly

theyre targets b/c of the money that they got.stay away from the hoodrats?lots of them are hoodrats,but now have money..youd be surprised by how many of these guys have blood/cryps affiliations.no matter how rich they get ,you will go to the area your from once in awile.not saying this is the case here,but happens alot..pacman drives his ferrari ?whats your point..tim thomas is a multi millionare playing in la,but hes in the ghetto where he grew up in(nearest ghetto area near me)nice guy .but he has a great chance of getting jacked up,b/c of who he is.just like marbury was a few years back.THEY ARE TARGETS,i dont understand why you dont believe that.......imagine this happend with nba players,or all the stuff that happend this year in the nfl happend to nba guys,that league would be getting killed.NFL IS untouchable,no matter how many oj's they have in their league.the public(media)are such hippicrites.
