DENVER -- Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan has announced that rookie quarterback Jay Cutler will start in Sunday night's game against Seattle to replace veteran Jake Plummer.
Cutler, who was the eleventh pick out of Vanderbilt in the draft last April, hasn't taken a snap since the preseason.
And it's the first time Plummer's been benched for a reason other than an injury for the first time in his ten-year career. He's 39-15 as Denver's starter in the regular season.
But the Broncos are coming off two straight losses for the first time in two years heading into Sunday's home game against defending the defending NFC champion Seattle Seahawks.
Shanahan says he hopes a quarterback change can ignite the team's struggling offense. The team is 26th in the league in passing yards per game at 171-point-five.
Cutler's passer rating of 109.3 led the league in the preseason.
