I'm not an outdoorsman so I don't know what kind of bird that is, but it still reminds me of a story I heard when I was working on the railroad.
One cold wintry night, there was a yard clerk who had to go between the tracks and record the numbers off a train which had just been yarded.
Temp was in single digits, so he bundles up in a foul weather jacket (the kind with the fur around the hood).
About forty five minutes later, he comes back into the yard office, his hood is torn to shreds and his face is white as a sheet.
While he was walking between the tracks, an owl spotted the fur around his hood, thought it was a rabbit, swooped down, stuck its talons in his hood and almost tore his head off!
Railroaders are famous for wild tales, and that was a good one.
