Only a few media accounts made mention of the fact that Governor Bush had, in fact, intervened to stop the scheduled execution of a condemned man in June 1998. Virtually none of these accounts, however, made mention of who the recipient of this commutation was. And the recipient was, it should be noted, no garden-variety criminal. No, this was a very special case indeed, for the man whose life was spared by 'Law & Order' George was none other than serial killer Henry Lee Lucas. Lucas is not a garden-variety serial killer: he is probably the most prolific, and arguably the most brutal, serial killer in the American crime annals.

Gosh...

i am in a state of shock...is there nothing that BUSH has done that is not in line with an idiot drill.

But when you think about it , this shouldn't be a shock, because anyone that buddies-up with those rats in Saudi Arabia after 9-11 is warped

Lucas's sentence was commuted to life in prison in 1998 by then-Governor George W. Bush. His was the only death penalty case among the 153 that came across George W. Bush's desk in his tenure as Texas Governor (including that of Karla Faye Tucker) in which Governor Bush intervened and commuted the death sentence. Lucas died in prison of natural causes.

Though Lucas's death seemed to have removed the possibility of resolution in many instances, there are still a number of unresolved or open questions. Some authorities?while admitting that Lucas tended to exaggerate his accounts and told some outright lies, and also recognizing that the Lucas Task Force engaged in some very questionable tactics?insist that Lucas was a viable suspect in a number of unsolved murders. Despite these factors, Lucas still maintains a reputation, in the words of author Sarah L. Knox, "as one of the world's worst serial killers.

I think dying in prison is a worse penalty than a quick exit anyway. Can't hold this one against Dubya.

Probably not the most fruitful road to go down for Bush non-sympathizers, talking about him keeping people from being put to death. I think he's more well known for making sure people die, than rescuing them from death.

And, of course, if they are a close personal friend or advisor who kept quiet about bad administration stuff, they get some personal discretion.
