Bush to Release Military Pay Records

Tuesday, February 10, 2004

WASHINGTON ? The White House, facing election-year questions about President Bush's (search) military service, is releasing pay records and other information intended to support his assertion that he fulfilled his duty as a member of the Air National Guard (search) during the Vietnam war.

The material, to be released Tuesday, was to include pay records and annual retirement point summaries to show that Bush served.

"These records clearly document that the president fulfilled his duty," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said.

The point summaries were released during the 2000 presidential campaign but the pay records were not obtained by the White House until late Monday from the Air Reserve Personnel Center in Denver, Colo., McClellan said. He said the center, apparently acting on its own, reviewed Bush's records and came up with the pay information.

"It was our impression from the Texas Air National Guard ? they stated they didn't have them," he said. "It was also our impression those records didn't exist." Bush on Sunday authorized the release of his Guard records. McClellan said the latest material apparently is all of Bush's records.

The pay information documented the dates when Bush showed up for Guard duty, the spokesman said. "You are paid for the dates you served," McClellan added.

Bush's military record was raised as an issue in the 2000 campaign and was revived this year by Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe (search), who called Bush "AWOL" ? absent without leave ? during a period of his service when he was in Alabama.

Asked if the records should end the controversy about Bush's service, McClellan said, "You have to ask those who made these outrageous accusations if they stand by them in the face of this documentation that demonstrates he served and fulfilled his duties."

Bush enlisted in the Texas Air National Guard in 1968 shortly before graduating from Yale University.

Questions have been raised about whether family connections helped him get into the Guard when there were waiting lists for what was seen as an easy billet. Bush says no one in his family pulled strings and that he got in because others didn't want to commit to the almost two years of active duty required for fighter pilot training.

A central issue is whether he showed up for duty while assigned to Guard units in Alabama, where he worked on a political campaign in 1972. "There may be no evidence, but I did report," Bush told NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday. "Otherwise, I wouldn't have been honorably discharged."

Another question is why he was allowed to end Guard duty about six months early to attend Harvard Business School. Bush said on NBC that he had "worked it out with the military. And I'm just telling you, I did my duty."

McClellan said the White House would release statements ? previously distributed ? from Albert Lloyd Jr., who was personnel director for the Texas Air National Guard from 1969 to 1995 and who reviewed Bush's military records at the request of his campaign four years ago.

Lloyd has said that Bush's early discharge was not uncommon for pilots or other crewmen who were to leave soon and had been trained on now-obsolete jets, as was Bush's case.

I hope the records tell the story about how urgent he was needed in Alabama for that relection. H had no political clout at that time. And how the timeing worked so well. He goes to Bama. His old unit back in Texas is told to stand by for possiable duty in nam. Almost sounds like inside info. But since he had not flew anything for almost a year. He would have been useless anyway. And yes there were waitng list to get into the guards mid 60's to early 70's. In many case we were told in the 1000's.
So I say he served and said that long time ago. I also say he was clever or oh so lucky. Or some help was there and maybe no one told him. But that all looks to easy of away out to be true. He new.

I read this part of the Meet the Press transcript on Monday. Will be interesting to see all the analysis of what has been opened for review. I'm also interested in hearing about Kerry and his service as an officer.

yea, for 8 years there was no mention of military service because of the coward clinton, but now all of sudden the fu**ing libs have a possible "war hero" for a candidate and now it is sooooo important.

What a crock, this democratic party is such a joke that is almost funny to watch them and their followers, except for the fact that when they are in power we pay thru the nose for what???? all the feel good and worthless programs and ideas they put on the American people.

AH but Bush did the bragging last time and it was mentioned many times he had served. I say he must have. But a clever way for sure. But I will know he did when all his buddies he served with come forward and say so. You think any guys that served with him have forgot. Common he's the president. What a honor to be able to say I served with him. We even had a drink or two. He was a nice guy. We nailed a joint togeather one day. If any of you guys served you know you dont forget your old buddies. When we here a few of them come forward then you will know you were not BS'd. So far one from Texas has. So were just waiting for Alabama. It's not a big issue unless you keep trying to play the role.

djv, you need to get some help or get a life, any comparison of clinton to bush on military service is ridiculous.

Clinton is a gutless coward who hated the military and did nothing in the way of keeping terrorists in check for 8 years.

Bush is doing it as we speak and all you can cry about is his service or where he did it whaaaaaaaaaaaaa whaaaaaaaaaaaa
whaaaaaaaaa whaaaaaaaaaaaa, your a joke:thefinger

CTGuy Clinton? Is he running for something. He won and is already gone. Were talking more about current issues and BS's.
By the way why is a liberial like you from Calf sticking up for Bush so much.
Oh I see where your coming from. Clinton lied about a BJ. Bush lied about his service. What the hell I told you they all twist facts.
Do you think you can run a country this big without streching the truth.

the viet nam war was an unusual war for our country for many reasons. i am not going to go into them here.

young men from all different economic stratas were looking to avoid being drafted into this war for many reasons. some were excused for religious reasons, some because of attending college, some left the country, & some joined the reserves. imo, how those young men dealt with that war is irrelevant in today's world.

it didn't bother me that clinton went overseas to school so he would be ineligible for the draft & it doesn't bother me that bush enlisted in the national guard to avoid that war.

it makes no difference to me that because an american president chose a different course to serve his country to fight in a questionable war 40 years ago, is now deciding our nations security & sending our troops into combat.

if the requirement in becoming a war time president is to serve in our country's military, then audie murphy(the most decorated soldier in ww2) would have been a great president, instead of an alcoholic "grade b"movie actor, & 2 of our greatest presidents, lincoln & fdr would not have been in office to shape out history.

what bothers me now & bothered me during the viet nam war was/is if a person's actions embolden our enemies fortitude in any way. and there is evidence that kerry's actions when he left the military did just that.

btw, i saw the exchange between powell & a congressman at a hearing & started shaking my head. the party that questions a sitting president, no matter who it is, about his patriotism is asking for trouble. the american people don't like seeing this.

djv, no clinton isn't running for anything, but his wife sure is and I'm sure you will be right on her bandwagon. you don't want to talk about the past now because of the 8 years of clinton, but before that all we heard from you assholes was 30 years of how bad nixon was and how it did this and how dare he did that.

Just admit it, your a closet lib that hates bush as bad as barbara does. you are such a joke :thefinger

ar, are you serious, you are questioning Senator Kerrys military service?? Listen living in Massachusetts I know more than most about the junior Senator from Massachusetts, there's more than 1 reason not to like him. However questioning or disagreement with his military service regarding Vietnam would be a slippery slope. With the possible exception of the great Senator McCain, probably nobody has done as much for American POW&MIA' s than Kerry. A good deal of this was done, with absolutely no press or reporters either. Far as Vietnam, Kerry has paid his dues, no question.

shamrock,

i agree with you about kerry's fighting record. and i am in no way questioning kerry's service during the viet nam war. as a matter of fact i greatly appreciate anybody who served in the military during a time of war. i was just questioning some of his actions after the war.don't get me wrong he had every right to question why the u.s. was in nam. but from what i read he questioned the method the soldiers were using during conflict. i just think that shouldn't be done while troops were actively fighting.
i'm sorry i didn't express myself better.
