to ESPN insider. They are saying that the Irish have him as their first choice to take over for Charlie. What a brutal pick if this is true, I watched Davis coach the Browns for 3 or 4 years and it was a mess. What has he done at UNC other than produce decent teams that always fall below expectations. I would think Brian Kelly would be a better option given what he has done at Cinci with half the athletic budget as Butch gets at UNC.

It doesn't matter. ND is irrelevant, and they hold unrealistic expectations.

No coach can compete for a NC with those academic restrictions.

The unfortunate reality is the most talented players are morons.

I think ND should go after Gary Patterson, the guy has won with a limited budget and is stuck in a non-BCS qualifying conference. Jon Gruden would be another guy that could bring a splash with him if hired.

Patterson would be very dangerous at OU if Stoops left.

I am hearing Stoops has agreed to money (one number I heard was 8 years $35-40 million) but Stoops (of course) wants academic exemptions and the like - stuff ND admin isnt likely to agree upon.

You're kidding right? Butch Davis coached the EXPANSION BROWNS, and did you see some of the picks they made while he was there?

Couch, Green, Brown, Warren...are any of them still in the league???

Also, comparing the NFL to college is just dumb.

Finally, he resurrected UNC. They were stale and going nowhere. Look at their defense, and how many guys they will have playing in the NFL. The guy can flat out recruit. This is in a short period of time at UNC...I believe this is just his 3rd year there.

Personally, I think the best hire took the Tennessee job "last" year.

Certainly respect Sun's sources, but I am hearing the exact opposite about Stoops. He is building a $4m house in Norman and have heard he is not going anywhere until his teenagers graduate high school. I hope Big Game Boob stays.

As for Patterson, I spoke with him and his wife this morning right before he got on the phone with Dan Patrick. They were all smiles. Wouldn't you be with that kind of raise and extension! His wife is a Fort Worth girl and it will be hard to get her to move (ie., KState and Auburn). He was told in no uncertain terms that his family will be in FW. I guess 200 miles north would not be that big of a move.

since i think davis is a hell of a college faootball coach, i think it would be a great hire for nd....as would kelly & stoops....

i'll toss in a long shot name that i have read about in various newspapers for the nd coaching position.... fitzgerald from northwestern....
