new mexico +6: nice spot here for the lobos coming off their big win over utah saturday. nm playing better ball of late, winning 3 of last four home games and covering seven of last ten. i know everyone has heard a lot of senior night/last home game plugs of late, but the one tonight in albequerque tonight appears to be a little special. lobo ruben douglas, the nation's leading scorer at 28.9 ppg, is one of the lobo seniors. the other is former pg senque carey, who suffered a spinal injury from a fall during a game back in november. the injury was serious enough that he was completely paralyzed for about two weeks. he has been in his native california since having spinal surgery about a month ago, and has regained the use of all his limbs. he has been a very popular lobo player over his career, and he retuned to albequerque yesterday in order to be present for the ceremonies tonight. i would think it will be very meaningful to his teammates.
as to byu, they are in a tight race with utah for the mountain west title, trailing the utes by a game with three to play. they have not faired well historically in albequerque, and also have not faired well in the second leg of this three day colorado springs/albequerque road trip since it began with the conference shuffling a few years ago. this weekend, as a cost cutting measure, byu decided to make the haul from colorado springs to new mexico by charter bus. blizzard conditions along the 350 mile trip caused delays and resulted in the cougars arriving in albequerque around 3:30 am on sunday morning.
i also wanted to make a play on air force catching the points at home, but with utah coming off the saturday loss, utes flying by private charter, and the af center being taken to a local hospital after saturday's game with a reaggravation of a prior hip injury, i decided to take a pass on the flyboys.
g/l tonight.
