California Authorities Install Nation?s First Stop Sign Cameras

stop-sign-camera-1.jpgWe?ve all heard and weighed in on the merits of stoplight cameras, but now California?s Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) has installed five stop sign cameras in the Santa Monica Mountains.
The stop-sign cameras?which are said to be the first of their kind in the U.S.?are similar to their stoplight cousins, but they don?t take individual snapshots, they take video, which must be reviewed by a sworn park ranger, who then issues the citations.
Locals aren?t happy about the cameras or the $100 tickets which they?re issuing, and they?re already bracing to take their grievances to the courts. If they don?t succeed in getting the cameras banned, it seems like it will only be a matter of time before the devices spread to other communities.
