Answer a quick question for me: why has G.W.Bush been able to completely skate from the fact he used an Enron jet during his campaign? He's also appointed a couple of former Enron employees during his term. If a dem had done the same thing there wouldn't be enough bandwidth in America to service the stories it would generate. Am I missing something here? Honestly, I'm confused on this one.

Great stuff in those previous post Auspice. To answer your question it baffles me why the "Liberal" Media hasn't picked up on this. I know I was quite disappointed to see Fox News, who is fair and balanced, never run a piece on it either.

who pays for all this????

and why can't we encourage people to stand up on their own two feet instead of having everything given to them???

whatever happened to self-reliance instead of government reliance???

and which leads to a more satisfying life???

Doc your man has spent more of my money then any liberial ever has. I dont know why he calls him self republican.
As for never leave a child behind. They had the neat way in Texas how to hide them. They were transfered or placed in special programs. So when he ran for President it looked like Texas had it's chit togeather. Houston said it had 1.5% drop out only from it's system. Dallas said 3%. Now that 2 years have passed since the election. How in the hell did Houston jumb to 40% and Dallas to 31%. Dam liberial press don't report anything anymore. Have to get all this from TV news. As for Enron. It's half of Calf problem how they snookerd that state. There's a real sin not one of Bush's friends from Enron are in jail yet. That alone should piss half of Americans off.

W A S H I N G T O N, Dec. 10 ? When the energy-trading firm Enron collapsed recently after disclosing financial irregularities, thousands of employees lost their jobs and investors lost billions. Enron's fall also crippled one of President Bush's most loyal corporate supporters.

The Houston-based company was among the first to back Bush when he ran for governor of Texas. Enron and its executives went on to become the largest source of financial support for Bush's gubernatorial campaigns, giving more than $500,000, according to a study by the Center for Public Integrity.
"Enron was the number one career patron for George W. Bush," said center director Charles Lewis. "There was no company in America closer to George W. Bush than Enron." Lewis says the company's goal in backing Bush and other politicians was to encourage further deregulation of the energy industry.

"Enron made a decision that they needed government to go their way and they put the money out to make sure that happened," he said.

Loyalty and Access
Congressional hearings open this week into Enron's financial implosion, which culminated in a Dec. 2. bankruptcy filing. The Labor Department, the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission are all investigating Enron. It's unclear to what extent the inquiries are examining the longstanding ties between administration officials and the company, which was once the seventh-largest U.S. corporation in terms of revenue.

Enron CEO Kenneth Lay has been a friend of Bush and the Bush family for years. When Gov. Bush ran for president, Enron gave him access to a company jet. (The Bush campaign reimbursed the company roughly $25,000 for the flights.)

In April 2000, when Enron opened a new baseball stadium named for the firm, then-candidate Bush sat right in front of Lay in the Enron box.

Since 1999, Enron and its executives have given more than $2 million to the Bush campaign and other GOP causes. Democrats got about a quarter of that amount.

As Bush assumed the presidency, Enron had unusual access to the new administration's deliberations about energy policy and appointments to important posts. Lay served on the Bush transition team and helped interview candidates for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which oversees the gas pipelines and electricity grids that are key to Enron's business. Earlier this year, the commission's chairman, Curtis Hebert, who was being considered for reappointment by the White House, declared himself "offended" by Lay's lobbying efforts. Hebert later quit the panel.

When Vice President Dick Cheney drafted a new energy policy, he met with Lay and other Enron executives. Enron was reportedly the only company to be granted such a meeting.

Lay declined to be interviewed for this story.

Washington Posts
Enron alumni also fill prominent slots in the Bush administration. The president's chief economic adviser, Larry Lindsey, and the top trade negotiator, Robert Zoellick, both served as advisers to the company. Secretary of the Army Thomas White was an Enron executive before joining the administration. When he assumed the Army post, White was forced to sell more than $25 million in Enron stock, according to a financial disclosure form he filed.

Rep. Henry Waxman, D.-Calif., has been pressing Cheney to detail his contacts with the troubled company.

"There is a very intimate connection between Enron and the Bush administration. How could they not have known what was happening?" Waxman said in an interview last week. "I think we need to find out what people in the administration knew, many of whom used to work for Enron. We ought to find out whether they ignored warning signs."

In the past, the White House has resisted requests for information about its dealings with the energy industry. The General Accounting Office, the investigative and auditing arm of Congress, threatened to sue Cheney earlier this year after he declined to turn over documents about his meetings with Enron and others interested in the energy policy he was developing. After the Sept. 11 attacks, GAO said the effort to get Cheney's records was no longer a priority.

Despite the administration's numerous ties to Enron, the White House has deflected questions about the company's failure. Reporters who asked White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer about Enron were referred to the Treasury Department.

However, Fleischer said last week that Congress has grounds to investigate how Enron fell so far so fast.

"It's very understandable why people in Congress? charged with oversight of any implications of Enron's bankruptcy would seek hearings," he said.

anyone and everyone thought Enron was a great company two years ago..they were THE energy giant.....geez Dr Freeze sat in Enron Field many times.....i guess Dr Freeze was all in on the conspiracy....if Dr Freeze was called to answer questions, Dr Freeze would have no comment

all this is a bunch of ramble meant to insinuate baseless garbage....it can be done with any Dem. as well and it just so happened that the Bush's have close ties with a number of companies in Houston PROBABLY because they live here

Ken Lay had closer ties with Mayor Lee P. Brown than he ever did with Bush....is Maylor Lee P Brown scrutinized like this for you liberals??? Heck no!!! How about by anyone? No.....

such thoughts are ridiculous....so laughable that it makes me wonder if some of you people shouldn't be admitted

**** See this Enron thing can be spun any which way you want -- Truth be told, no politicians probably knew of what was going on, and the crooks will eventually go to jail...we all know how the legal system has evolved in this country, and it takes years and costs taxpayers lots of $$ to get convictions unfortunately***

INTRIGUE SURROUNDS GORE TRIP TO CHINA

Former vice-president Al Gore recently made a visit to China, where he is believed to have been paid to speak at a communist government-linked think-tank and attended a lunch hosted by former ENRON director Ronnie Chan Chi-chung.

MORE

Participants at the China Development Institute-sponsored forum in Shenzhen, at which Gore was a key speaker last month, were offered the chance to have their photo taken with Gore if they paid 50,000 yuan (HK$ 47,000) or 100,000 yuan for conference sponsorship packages, the SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST reported.

Gore claims he was paid by BusinessWeek to attend. "I can tell you specifically our contract says DnmStrategies for BusinessWeek," says Gore spokesman Jano Cabrera. But BusinessWeek denies this up and down to the WEEKLY STANDARD tonight, according to sources.

"This was not an official BusinessWeek-sponsored event," says Nancy Sheed, the magazine's spokeswoman in New York. "We did not pay any of the participants in the event. We did not pay any of the speakers at the event. BusinessWeek was also not aware that anybody had been invited on behalf of BusinessWeek to speak at the event."

MORE

The news of his visit, which was said to have been personal, is expected to raise questions about whether he was engaged in fundraising activities following his role in an Asian campaign donation controversy in 1996.

Gore embarked on the China trek on the eve of his current book tour.

"You can't be the leading Democrat candidate for the upcoming elections and come to a communist country, take money from a communist think-tank and declare it a private event," said Mark Simon, vice-chairman in Hong Kong of Republicans Abroad.

Gore attended an informal Sunday lunch on November 18 with about 30 members of the Asia Society, hosted by Hong Kong chairman Mr Chan at the offices of his property company, Hang Lung Development.

Chan was an independent director of bankrupt US energy company ENRON, which triggered a crisis of confidence in American corporate governance when it collapsed last December.

Asked whether Gore was aware of Chan's relationship with ENRON, one source said: "He was . . . because I told him before we went into it the lunch ."

Dr Freeze, I suggest you go back and read Auspices post about Clinton and welfare. It will explain to you how Clinton veteoed bills because the did not contain incentives to go back to work. Don't worry Dr. none of you rich folk paid for that.
Bush's ties to Lay are famous. Not even worth argueing about.
DJD, great stuff about the No Child Left Behind scam that Bush ran in Texas.
Dr. Freeze, your hatred for the middle class is frightening.

Auspice Nice writeup on Clintons Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996

The only thing you failed to mention was the results of it.
From his debut in office till he left was the highest increase in history of welfare spending.

The bottom line on welfare spending
http://www.heritage.org/Research/Welfare/Test030701b.cfm

Now to be completely fair I will say it was not his fault. That dates back to Johnson's war on poverty.--and I expect that Bush's tenure will produce a new record and on to the next president.

Its a catch 22. When you try to provide benefits for single mothers and their children and at the same time have elements in society that have made a living out of this by having over 70% of their children born out of wedlock your just pouring gas on the fire. Until you quit rewarding people for being non productive leaches on society there will be no solution.
It use to be the ole 80/20 rule 80% of people were productive and carried the other twenty. That # is reversing fast with all the illegal's and increasing segmants of non productive elements.
--and you want to know something, chances are if a person was ambitious and productive they will probably figure out a way to keep it which means the working class in their 20's and 30's will bear the brunt of this. I do not envy their prediciment. :(
Many worry about companies leaving the U.S. you would be amazed at # of people with "Old Money" that are retiring outside the U.S. and spending their money there.--and there will be more.;)

Maybe one of you Californians can answer this one for me...

I thought I heard on NPR or some TV show that Davis can throw the whole recall vote overboard by simply resigning his office before the election, thereby making the Lt. Governor the new Governor...

Is this correct, and if so, is it a viable outcome for whats taking place in your state right now?

Thanks for your replies......

this is correct but they are saying that Davis has way too big of a ego and too much at stake to step down. He really thinks that he can survive this and get voted back in.

Not sure of the time frame for him to do this stepping down. Maybe Ca people can tell us.

At This Point Davis CAN NOT resign and let Bustamonte take the helm. The Recall has to proceed and Bustamonte can only act as an interim Governor. The Election will select the next Governor.
This has been hashed over & over on the radio out here and the concensus seems to be that ppl are tired of being powerless and seeing endless spending. according to the radio sources the revenue from last year increased by 25%, but Davis increased his spending 40%. Kinda hard to balance the budget w/numbers like that. Ferdville knows all the particulars, but thats it in a nutshell I believe.
It is like the Illegal Immigrant issue that no candidate is addressing- Who will pick our fruit, or mow the lawn, do the other menial jobs? Same ppl who do it in S. Dakota, Iowa, and so on. No we have become so spoiled that ppl refuse to 'work' and instead 'work' the system. No one says if Unemployment is so bad why are there so many Illegals? Or I could go into the Power Crisis too which was a complete sham. Good place to start on CA politics is:

They just lost me. Davis need 51% to win. Anyone else can win with as litle as 15% if that is the biggest number other then what Davis has. That all seemed just alittle screwd up the way I heard that. They had to leave something out.

djv,

Technically, Davis is not running. Voters will be making two choices at the booth. The first is to for/against the recall measure. The second is to select one on the list of recall candidates. If the recall measure passes, the candidate on the recall list with the most votes wins. If the recall measure fails, Davis remains as governor.

As a voter, even if you vote against the recall measure, you still vote for one of the recall candidates.

uhhh....i am from a middle class family and currently live in the lower class....all my friends are lower to middle class most making 20K-60K/year.....do i hate myself???

I suggest YOU go back and read about what Clinton did...he broadened most of these plans while doing very little about this "working" clause....there are so many ways around that clause that it means next to nothing

i don't see how i hate the middle class when i think that they should not be taxed nearly as much as they are so that they can make more money......you liberals think that once you are in a class you stay there.....us conservatives think that ANYONE can move up in monetary and productive success and do not want to burden them with ridiculous taxes in doing so

but hey "hating the middle class" is yet another ridiculous soundbite used against anyone who disagrees with the entitlement, i am a victim economy....

i guess every conservative out there "hates the middle class" that disagrees with you....lmao

absurdity again noted
