one of my offshores has the women of Canada favored by 10.5 goals over Kazakhstan.
Each side is -115. Will our friendly neighbors to the north run up the score and win by 11 goals?! I'm tempted to play the other team.

Any thoughts?

Us polite Canadians ?? :)

To be honest, I would say no.

I know the seeding could come down to goals but you don't get many Canadian teams that would run up the score, everyone's there to do their best not to try and embarass someone else.

If it was late rounds and they knew they needed a certain amount of goals than maybe yes, but early I'd say no.

Two things we hate here in Canada about international hockey is shootouts to decide games and having to pound weaker teams in the name of goal differential.

(watch, it'll be 20-1) ;)

Stag,

I agree with CI,

Lately they have not played to their full potential and seem to have lost their scoring power. I would say a slight lean to the +10.5, but then again I haven't been able to hit anything lately in pucks!

Be careful here.

I equate this line of -10.5 goals to a college basketball game where the favourite is favoured by 35 points.

WHO will lay 35 points? 8 out of ten people that see this spread will say "Wow, I'm taking the underdog there, I don't care who is playing, nobody should be favoured by that big a margin."

It's all about perceptions when you get into huge spreads like these. We all know that Vegas sets lines NOT as game predictions, but to try and get 50% of the action on each side. So, in order to try and get 50% of the action on the heavy favourite, they actually have to come up with a false line (lower than it really should be) to try and encourage some favourite bettors.

When I see a college basketball favourite of 30 or more points, I add at least 5-8 points to it to see what I feel the real spread should be. And in this hockey game, I feel the "real" line should be about 14-15 goals.

Canada wins 15-0.

More info on this game from Canadian newspapers this morning................

Last time these two played, Canada won 11-0 (hence the 10.5 line) and outshot their opponents 67-6. Keep in mind that game was not played under the "Big Lights" of the Olympics like todays will be. Courses in Sports Pschology tell us that a well learned task is performed better in front of a large crowd, while a poorly learned task is performed worse in front of a large audience. Advantage:Canada

The Kazakhstan's have a base pool of about 100 women to draw on for their National team. Canada has a base pool of over 53,000.

Reporters at practice yesterday wrote that the Kazakhstan team looked very small and had several weak skaters.

the spread in Womens hockey between Canada and the US and the rest of the field is just getting wider. Finland is the third best but many people believe they have taken a step back.

good luck whatever you play.

by the way the worse thing in this tournament is the shootout, any game decided by a shootout is a joke.

thanks

Final Score

Final Score

Canada 7
Kazakhstan 0

Shots on goal:
Canada 66
Kazakhstan 11

It was extremely weird watching parts of this game on TV. Canada seemed to be on a 60 minute power play as they very rarely even gave the Kazat's possession of the puck. The Kazat goalkeeper, Trunova, was very solid in net and was given no help at all, as the shots would indicate.

Two other differences.......there is no body checking in women's hockey..........and the speed of the game is so much slower than the men. At times, BOTH teams seemed to be skating in molasses.

Bottom Line:

Kazakhstan covered the the large line. I was very wrong and I hope Stag cashed this one on the advice of Center Ice and TTM$.
