The Montreal Canadiens have acquired Scott Gomez from the New York Rangers in exchange for Christopher Higgins.

The Habs now have the playmaking center that they haven't had for quite a long time. Gomez had an off-year with only 16 goals and 58 points, but the 29-year-old has had three 70 point seasons and one 84 point effort in his nine year NHL career.

Higgins is still a highly regarded power forward who managed only 12 goals and 23 points in 57 games last season.

Calgary signed Jay Bouwmeester to a five-year, $33 million deal Tuesday night.

Well there's a trade for a player's rights that worked out. This is a significant signing by the Flames as Bouwmeester will team with Dion Phaneuf to provide Calgary with a dynamic duo on the blueline. Needless to say, GM Darryl Sutter is very pleased. "Jay is one of the most complete defenseman in the game, and we are very pleased to have reached an agreement that will make him an important component of the Calgary Flames success," said Sutter. "We identified Jay as the priority player where we were going to focus our money. We wanted an opportunity a few days in advance of the deadline, and that's why we made the move we did this past weekend." Bouwmeester also seemed very happy to playing in his home province of Alberta.
