There's something so precious in seeing someone who experiences white privilege every day of their lives (and doesn't have a clue what it really means) claim those who talk about it think that it means, "I hate whitey!"

Especially when those who are said to say "I hate whitey" are also "whities." :0074

Sounds like a good Mastercard commercial in the making.

We already tried explaining this to rusty. Do you think these pieces of shit are going to do any better and actually get it?

If capital gains aren't taxed like regular income, then why is gambling taxed like regular income?

You win a 5k jackpot and you get a 1099. ...Certainly that money I "invested" in the slot machine was income I already had taxed, right?

The double-tax argument simply doesn't make sense. Money made or won is just that, regardless of whether it came from your undeserved trust fund or your hard earned factory job.

And yes - the numbers say it all. The insane imbalance of capital and estate wealth is plenty of evidence for which argument here is "correct".

Of course spending needs to be cut. And Obama proposed 3 trillion in cuts, only asking for Clinton tax rates to return as a compromise. Sure seemed like a fair offer. Does anybody on the right have a good argument for why this offer was not accepted by Boehner last summer? I know the political reasons why it wasn't, but are there any logical and defendable reasons?

With all due respect, this is a scintillating post. Nice work.

For immediate future reference: Smurph, are you going to be consistently posting here now? If so, I will do my best to post more. I miss (very much) the cast of characters that really made political (and other) discussions/arguments fun and eventful not that long ago, and would love to see things return to that kind of "sport." I swear to God, I do miss Spibble Spab and Charles Manson in so many ways, because everything seemed so much more fun back then. Maybe this forum can witness a resurgence of talent and fun? We have time before the next election - let's make it happen, kids! :00hour

And dare I say it - I would welcome my old chum Gardenweasel back, because he remains a visionary forum legend that always makes things interesting. Call me crazy - I do enjoy the quality diatribes - I do learn a lot about myself and ways to think about things. We have plenty of "smart" people around here - it would be nice if we could get things a bit more above board and stop wasting time with all the name calling childish bullshit. But, that's just me... cheers. :0074

I'd love to see that. I'd bet if you could get Muff to stop, everyone would (I only pick on him after he degrades or calls names first - and yes, his act does get old)...

But you will never get him to stop. That's just how he was brought up. And old dogs can't learn new tricks.

But it would be nice to have civil discussions on here, with out MD jumping in with name calling, profitanity or vulgarity.

But it won't happen. That would be one of the safest bets any of us could ever make.

I'm not the forum police, and I can't?nor do I want to?try to control things. I had a forum before that was pretty active and I spent an incredible amount of time trying to do just that. I gave up. Partially because I couldn't compete with the Jack machine... :0074

I wish the bullshit would stop. I wish some people weren't allowed to post at all because they add nothing to anything. I wish for a lot of things. I know people wish they didn't have to read a lot of my crap. And so it goes.

I just miss some guys that used to post here, because they did it with flair and a sense of perspective and humor. Sadly, I think that humor and good natured ribbing is gone for the most part. I think it somewhat symptomatic of where we are politically as a country now.

I don't need to see your pitiful 1040, but I'll tell you what mine shows - zero Federal tax.

You see, maggot*, My wealth is mostly tax-paid long ago, and my income is nearly all tax free or sheltered. I learn from folks like Warren Buffet while you learn from Joe the Plumber. I don't have Buffet's money, but I can use his tactics.

*I need to find a new name for you. Calling you "maggot" denigrates maggots which do actually serve a useful purpose.

Oh god i dont want to get yelled at...

I?ve enjoyed reading this discussion and until now enjoyed staying out of it... But I had to ask about this post. It seems to contradict everything you have been preaching about since the protests started.
You seem to hate the rich and want the laws changed so they too pay their fair share.. yet you turn around and claim not only to be rich, but also that you use the same tactics and loopholes they use to avoid paying any taxes yourself? You state that your income is sheltered and you pay zero yet despise the super wealthy for doing the same thing.

Why are these loopholes ok for you to use but not others? If you think the rich have a moral obligation to pay more taxes why don?t you?

By the way not defending the tax laws in anyway just posing a question to you personally.

Thanks

You're misrepresenting what I have said. I never said that "others" should not use legitimate loopholes. What I said is that many loopholes should be eliminated.

You're right in that I think many loopholes should be closed, and the wealthy should pay more. That's what Warren Buffet, who is very, very wealthy has been promoting.

I don't pay more than I owe because: 1. It would not be a drop in the bucket, and 2. I think everyone should play by the same rules. As long as loopholes are legal, I'll use them. I'll buy gasoline @ $2.79 per gallon if that's the going rate too, although I think it should be taxed more than it is now.

When Buffet pays more, when Limbaugh pays more, when the tax codes are changed to benefit the wealthy less and working folks more, I'll be glad to pay my fair share, no complaints.

You see, it isn't the moral obligation of the rich, it's the moral obligation of those who write the laws.

I don't mind if you question my ideas about fair taxation; I'm happy to have the discussion. But the discussion is about fair tax law, not personal morals so please leave my personal morals out of it. You don't know who I am or what I do.

This coming from the guy who constantly calls other posters names, etc.......

Practice what you preach, and this forum will be improved 100%.

It would be nice to see civil discussions - although the only likely way to see that happen is to not have Muff post anymore...

We can all wish.....
