Every company does their 401k differently. It shouldn't matter if you sign up before or after taxes with your company. The way the government is going with social security and the bad management of our future retirement coverage, they see that the social security system is so corrupt that unless you're going to retire within the next ten years, you might as well right off your social security as a loss, meaning you'll probably never going to see it. Since they see that is inevitable, the government pushes and highly encourages everyone to invest more in their 401k. Thus, my point is that, the more one invests in their 401k, the more of a tax break one will receive. You'll have to ask your local accountant. So, if you both have already done your taxes and she signs up for her 401k afterwards, then she won't see anything until next years taxes. It would definitley benefit your wife in the long run and in her taxes to contribute a substantial amount to her retirement plan. Best of luck.

Now that I've re-read your question. The confusion is on my part. It would serve her better to sign up pre-tax. When you do that, your taxable income would be less than what it really is. Which means the government will tax your wife's income less. It's always best to take such contributions such as your 401k or your espp (employee stock purchase plan) pre-tax to drive down your taxable income...I hope that helped. Best of luck.

Defer tax till reiterment. At that point in your life yor tax should be no worse then same as now. And agood chance lower becasue you will have alittle less income. Do not pay tax now.

Double check the status of some money upfront for a route with fed-ex. Because that is not what it said on the story about that company. You become your own indepentent. Maybe It's either that or you must stay within there shelter and just cant make as much.

Good point Chopsticks. I also see where the 401k limits are rising each year. I think its something like 12k this year and 13k next.

The whole Hertz interview situation was just weird. I had my first interview Dec 3, was told id be contacted within a week with a decision--didnt hear anything for 3 weeks so I gave up. A week later, the HR lady calls me, and asks me if id like to work in a whole different area and location at another position--I said sure, went in for an interview, it went great, was told id hear something within 10 days as it had to be filled in 10 days, another 3 weeks go by, i dont hear anything, I email the HR lady 3 times over a week period, dont hear squat, give up on it, and move on. Well, 2 weeks later, she emails, says that position was filled by another individual, and wanted to know if id take ANOTHER position, at a totally new location. At this point, I was like, "WTF is going on" I say sure, she says come in for a final interview, I did, it went great, she said all we have to do is do your background check, and if that goes well, we will call you next week with a start date. I told her the last two times, things didnt happen in the time frame she gave me, she apologized and assured me she would call within the time frame given. What happens? 2 weeks go by, dont hear chit, call her, email her, dont get one reply and so I said "F*** it" and move on and take the FEDEX position. Well, lo and behold a month after she said she would call/contact me about the job, she calls, said I was cleared to hire and wanted me to start the very next day--which was FRIDAY(yesterday) I go in for orientation yesterday, and asked her what happened, and she apologized and said "they were just busy". So they arent giving me a great impression, but then again, I could use the job. So thats why im torn, it would look better on my resume, pays more, but they sure as hell jerked me around in the process. Oh, and in the previous times I interviewed, they filled those positions with other candidates at the last minute, and never called to tell me about it, and if you ask me, that isnt good business, thats just why I had a bad taste in my mouth with them........

Leaving a bad taste in your mouth is a hell of a lot better than leaving a hole in your wallet. The worst you could do is take the job until something else better comes along. Have a steady income until another opportunity comes about. You have to look on the bright side, at least she still contacted you and had a position open for you. That means that they still showed interest, late or not. Since you said that both companies offered some sort of benefit packages, I say take the job. IMO, medical coverage is supposed to quadruple over the next 2 years, so it's a lot better having to pay a small copay and have a small deduction from your payroll check for health coverage vs. going through an independent and pay out the azz. You can never tell when you're gonna get sick or get into a car accident. Best of luck.

hemiscatpak,

I say stick with the FedEx gig, like other folks have had solid company etc. Unless you want to be in sales, I don't know for sure but I have to assume that there is some sort of number you have to make for each Hertz location, that translates into a quota. I travel frequently and use Hertz, I am a gold member so I never talk to the agents etc. Well on Thursday I had a last minute trip and did not reserve a car, went to the desk and Hertz did not have any cars, so I walk to Avis and thier rep who was renting me the car was putting the HARD sale on the insurance. I told her like 5 times....I HAVE IT COVERED by my company. Well she pressed even harder due to my company only has a cap on the coverage. My insurance will cover anything I drive. I am not sure but I think that the insurance is one of the highest revenue generating pieces of car rental, heard a report @ some point. You seem hell bent on getting into managment, management is a pain in the a** unless you have great people with work ethic. Get some skin in the game, learn the business model, understand it and execute, then the promotions will come:D
