Hmm...where to start. There's a lot of things to digest in this matchup, so I guess I'll start with the line. Most places have it set as UNC -1, although I've seen it at pick and even texas -1 at a few books. I think this line is incorrect and represents the amount of square money that that is expected on UNC. IMO, on a neutral court, I think the line should be more like Texas -2. I think this puts the value on texas, but I will play carolina for the following reasons.

The tar heels produced their best defensive spurt of the year in the 2nd half against Air Force, holding them w/out a fg for over 8 minutes. Don't be fooled by the boxscore. AF played the princeton offense to perfection in the 1st half. We outrebounded them, but the shots weren't falling. I was very impressed with the adjustments made at halftime by the coaching staff, and even more impressed the players were able to implement them (funny sun tzu, I always read about you bitching about roy, but never see a thread giving him credit when credit is due  ) In any case, I think this team is gelling at the perfect time. Scott showed maturity in accepting his role off of the bench, and him hitting his 1st shot once he came in was a result of the new focus.

Texas played a very similar game in the 1st round, with a similar result. There was 1 big difference I noted. Where carolina won their game with a team effort against AF, texas relied heavily on Mouton to carry the team. This is no surprise; as mouton goes, so do the longhorns. When he doesn't (a la Okl St), then the whole team doesn't. Carolina has done a good job against teams this year with a potent offensive player. Texas is big and rebounds very well, so UNC won't be able to dominate the boards. This is an advantage for tx because this heels team relies on high possession counts to score.

Intangible: Roy Williams. He knows Texas, as good as anyone in the country. He owns Rick Barnes (6-1). I think he gives us the edge to win this game.

As an unbiased handicapper, I have to say the value is with Texas +1. As someone who has watched UNC for a while, my gut screams that we will win. So fwiw, even though the value is on texas, i feel very strongly that we will win the game tomorrow. I will be placing a large amount on us.

As always, I would appreciate feedback, on both teams.

Can Mack Brown come out and give the pre-game speeches?

carolina wins that game. it seems like late in the season, you started second guessing yourself when it came to carolina teams. to start the season, you were dead on with pretty much all your carolina games both spread and total. but lately, it seems whenever you say to play against em, they win and vice versa.

i really dont see how theres any "value" with texas

carolina is the better team. and texas is limping to the finish line. they have looked like dog shit for the last month. they havent played a good game since the texas tech game at home a month ago.

heels for me

Gman,

Appreciate your opinion. Your synopsis of my betting odyssey w/ the heels this year is correct. I started out on top of things, but got away from the way I was viewing things and frankly couldn't enjoy the games because I was too worried about my wagers. I've placed 1 or 2 bets on UNC since they blew the lead against FSU.

As far as the value on texas, I think that depends on your definition of value. Do you think that line is accurate? If so, then there is not value on tx. But I feel like it should be at least Texas -1. If that is the case, there is value because texas is getting points when if the books only took into account the actual matchup (and not public money) they wouldn't be getting those points. To me value doesn't necessarily have anything to do with which side is the right call. (Disclaimer: I do not agree with the Nick Douglass definition of value :D )

i believe the best play to be unc in 1st half and maybe over in 1st.as you know unc has habit of close games not going their way.if games is close with 5 minutes to go the tx bench and unc's inability to finish strong may be the key factors.first half i think barnes will play unc's up and down pace.second half will be more half-court basketball.look forward to your tx counterpart's opinion.good luck.i will play seton hall and under in duke game.

Just be careful of the Senior factor for Texas - I think there is something to the fact that they've been here before.

I might be putting too much into it but I like that big game experience.

A few brief comments. gMAN - are you trying to say UNC isnt limping to the finish line? One win in last 3 games, at that was an unimpressive win against a team most felt shouldnt be in and just 3 weeks ago lost to Texas Pan-American. Is Texas limoing, sure, but to ignore UNC's woes is a bit short sided.

We also know UNC has not been able to finish games, and doesnt have too much to show away from the Dean dome this year, although road play has certainly improved and there were a couple of nice wins.

There is no doubt 1-5 UNC is better. But they dont have a 6-11 and the game is in Denver. From what I saw Friday, even as bad as Barnes can be on the bench May wont be a factor. Klotz will keep him 20 feet from the basket, and either exhausted or in foul trouble. I am amazed how out of shape he is.

Bottom line: if I play objective handicapper I think anyone who plays this game is a fool. If both play as they have down the stretch, the game will be ugly and Texas will win. If they play their best, Carolina should win but if it is a tightly called game Carolina is in big trouble. If I had to play it, I think you have to play Texas simply because of the bench, and Texas, for their shortfalls, is more than due to have at least an average shooting game. In addition to above, Carolina is obviously the Joe P. play.

All that said, I have a bad feeling about the game. I just think money is better spent elsewhere. GMan, I am surprised at you - I dont see value on this game period, but if it is there it is with Texas.

Saint, GL. I am watching the game with my UNC buddy and we will both be trashed I am sure. He says Texas wins - not sure if he means it or is just reverse jinxing. LOL

2 other points - Roy has definitely owned Barnes. Of course, with the players they have had, he should. Last year was the only time the talent was close, even though KU had to lottery picks, and at home KU went to the buzzer in a classic.

Saint, I must say, please tell me you are embarrassed as my friend is about the shaved heads. Comical.

Anyway guys, gotta run. Flying to Denver with my buddy to go to the game.

GL to all.

I agree with most of your write-up st. The short UNC bench will be a factor, but not as much as it would in the regular season. The long ncaa time outs really help UNC out more than anyone. After all, this team took over the 1st round game when air force tired. Sean May is still out of shape because supposedly last summer/fall he did much less conditioning because they were afraid he would reinjure his foot. I do agree and think he will be a non-factor today, he usually gets shut down by matchups with other big men.

It should get a great game either way, much too early in the tourny though. This day is going to take forever, i wish I could fast forward to 8.
