Saw your question upstairs--hope all goes well for your son.
Here is site that mat be of interest to you.

http://www.dhs.state.mn.us/main/idc...ctionMethod=LatestReleased&dDocName=id_000091

I could tell you exactly if you were in Ky but state laws may be diff in Minn.

However federal laws -Hippa and their portabilty act- are federal and apply everywhere. The basics of fed Hippa/portabilty is if you do not go without insurance on your son for period exceeding 62 days--pre-existing conditions will not apply.
As far as Cobra info above was correct however in Ky even if group is less than 20 we having what is called continuation of coverage which is basically same as cobra but for smaller groups.Minn may have something similiar.
Important note to consider regarding your going out on own (self employed) again don't know if minn is same as ky but something you need to check on. If you go to another group they will have to take your son--if you go out on your own and try and purchase individual insurace they might not cover him at all or as in ky put him in high-risk pool with very high premiums.
Just some thoughts to consider
Hope all goes well for you.

Wayne, thanks very much. The beauty of this forum is that no matter what we all go through in our discussions on politics, sports betting, investments, whatever...the great thing is for civil members of the forum you build friendships that transcend everyday life. Just because somebody posts here for a while, puts themselves out there a little bit by giving credit where it is due, getting past the BS and simply being a person sharing discussions, you can gain important info for big things or little things just by asking.

I can't tell you how much it means to me that both people I've argued with and people I don't even know take time to try to help out...no reason for them to other than just wanting to and extending (what I consider) friendship and help. Of course this is a very important thing for me, but for others...hey, it's a choice they make to take the time to help another person out, just because.

That is pretty damn cool. Thanks a lot for the link, I will definitely check it out. I've gotten a lot of info from my current insurance agent that helped a lot, and as you could tell from the other thread a lot of help from several people here. I have to say that Agent has gone way beyond the normal interaction to try to help me...and I've seen people rip him about other things. He's top notch (along with you and others in the other thread) in my book.

Sorry to take so much space with this...it's just something that is far more important than my usual diatribes and BS. Funny how you can ask one question at MadJacks and you find out more than you need to know, and that there are plenty of new and old friends out there willing to help.

Thanks, Wayne, Agent, Jack, and others.

Chad first let me say the best of good luck with your son. Have 4 of my own. And now 8 grand kids. Have had many problems but never faced with such a tough one like yours.
Also your remarks about most folks here is dead on. I said many time with the exception of about two/three folks we could go to Wash DC and run this country as good as most there can.
And we do share many helpful thing here and we can give credit to M J for this site.
I did not see anyone suggest this above. As for insurance As far as I know you can have as many companies you wish to pay for. But in most states and most cases you designate the company you would use. I only mention this for one reason. It would be expensive. But you might for the time 3 or 4 months till everyone in family is covered. Get a policy for your son for special needs. At least that way you would be protected from a Bill that might take you 10 years to recover from.
In any case give your son a hug and I hope it all works out for him and your family.
