WOW SixFive you sure hit a nerve with some of these guys. I was raised on a farm and I guess many of the rural/farm boys are desensitized to this somewhat. However I was shocked and disappointed to see this clip show someone who is supposed to be a hunter (they are obviously not worthy of that title) take a compromised shot at any wild game, let alone a Dangerous species. They shot and wounded this animal initially with that first shot. This wounded lion then attacked after it was in fact trying to avoid contact with the humans. (At least it looked like that to me) They deserved to be charged and they were very lucky to escape with no more injuries than apparent in the video. I was also shocked to see the shot selection that compromised I felt the safety of other people in the hunting party.
I was raised by a family where the entire family hunted. All of my uncles and my father and the men of my mother's family. They were from the era of the depression where the food they hunted ended up on the table for a much needed meal. My father trapped rabbits in a trap called a rabbit gum. They were caught live and then slaughtered just the same as your OUTBACK 20 oz T-bone or the Quarter pounder you get at McDonalds.
We always consumed the game animals we hunted and killed. Pheasant, quail, duck, rabbit, squirrel, deer, dove, etc. I was instructed in the use of firearms at an early age(14) but not so early that I did not have a healthy respect for the same. The varmints and nuisance animals on the farm, were killed to eliminate the damage they did to crops, feed, and farm animals.
Bottom line I a hunter of 35 years neither agree with the actions of those in this film clip nor the far fetched belief that all hunting is wrong. I personally would hunt black bear if they remain in abundance in most of their natural territory, however I would never hunt a polar bear an animal that is endangered to a certain extent.
Hunting takes a certain skill and preparation to properly do. It also requires enought respect for the species you hunt to utilize a proper shot that will cleanly and humanely kill that animal with the first shot.
Like it or not most states enjoy a strong revenue base from hunter fees, taxes on sales of ammo and firearms, gasoline taxes spent driving to hunting areas, hunters apparrel, etc. This state (Ohio) also reaps a strong fee income from state owned shooting facilities. To hunt an animal in an enclosed pay for preserve is not my cup of tea either, however it is a business that exists due to the law of supply and demand and I don't engage in that nor have I ever.
The deer in the state of Ohio have 2, maybe 3 predators to keep the population in check. A, the hunters, B maybe coyotes stalk the fawns, C the rest of you guys here in your Honda Accord or your wife and kids in the mini-van. The other option is over-population and disease, the like of the sick raccoons we had 2-3 years back when fur prices got so low no one would trap them and skin them for the pelt. So disease thinned them instead.
I could go on but I think my viewpoint has been expressed.
