Chicago weather for Bears vs. Rams divisional playoff game
According to Accuweather’s latest forecast, Sunday's conditions in Chicago call for frigid and windy conditions with snow for Sunday night's game. The high temperature should reach around 20 degrees at kickoff, but it's going to feel like 2 degrees. It's expected to be quite windy with winds around 14-17 miles per hour, coming out of the southwest, with gusts reaching up to 21 miles per hour. Wind chills are expected to reach around 0-2 degrees. It's slated to snow in the 6 p.m. CT hour with flurries forecast from 7-9 p.m. CT.

Sideline Technology & Equipment
Heated Benches: Feature built-in heaters for players and separate heated slots for helmets and sometimes feet.
Heated Helmet Holders: Keep helmet padding from freezing, making them easier and more comfortable to put on.
Portable Heaters: Large propane-powered blowers and radiant heaters create warm zones on the sidelines.
Hand Warmers & Muffs: Chemical hand warmers are placed in gloves and specialized hand muffs for quarterbacks and receivers.
Player Gear & Apparel
Layers: Players wear thermal underwear, compression gear, fleece turtlenecks, and specialized cold-weather fabrics (like WSI or Heatr).
Insulated Jackets & Hats: Heavy, team-issued jackets, stocking caps, and gloves are essential.
Vaseline/Balm: Applied to exposed skin on faces and arms to shield from the cold.
Hydration & Nutrition
Warm Liquids: Hot chocolate and chicken broth are served for internal warmth, supplementing water and sports drinks.
Strategy & Tactics
Strategic Warming: Players huddle near heaters before going back on the field, but avoid staying too long to prevent the shock of returning to the cold.
Footwear: Specialized cleats and foot warmers help keep extremities from going numb.
By combining these methods, teams create a warm environment on the sidelines, allowing players to manage the extreme cold and maintain performance.

How Footballs Are (and Aren't) Handled:
No Artificial Heating: NFL rules strictly prohibit artificially heating game balls, even with sideline heaters, as it changes the ball's properties.
Sideline Staff Responsibility: Attendants try to keep balls out of the deep cold by keeping them in warm areas, but direct heating is a violation.

Both Caleb and Stafford have some of the highest mph for qbs. Both offenses have nice setups and line started at 51.5. Ball security key and turnovers more prevalent in super cold climates.

Ball security !!
So run run run run ???
I can see Williams killing a Quarter with his feet in the biggest game for the Bearssince 2020
a game they lost 21-9 in New Orleans

prior
lost 16-15 to the Eagles in Soldier Field 16-15

I got a bad feelin' here.

Can't trust either offense

We shall see

anybody have Stafford #'s in any conditions like these??
From Grok....

Matthew Stafford has limited exposure to truly frigid cold weather games (typically defined as kickoff temperature at or below 32°F), with only about 6 such games in his career—mostly from his Detroit Lions days on the road against teams like the Bears or Packers, plus a couple with the Rams.In those freezing conditions (≤32°F):
  • Team record: 3-3
  • Passing yards: 1,519 (averaging ~253 yards per game)
  • Touchdowns: 15
  • Interceptions: 3
  • TD:INT ratio: 5:1 (highly efficient)
His individual numbers are generally strong in these games, with a high passer rating often noted, even if team outcomes vary.

Broader Cold Weather StatsFor slightly less extreme cold (games under 40°F, a common threshold):
  • Team record: 7-11
  • Average yards per game: ~260–265
  • Touchdowns to interceptions: Around 30:9 across those games (still solid efficiency)
Inclement Weather ConsiderationsWhen factoring in precipitation (rain, snow) alongside cold—especially in recent years with the Rams—some analyses show tougher team results (e.g., 1-9 in outdoor games with cold + rain/snow since 2021, or poorer completion % below 20°F with wind chill).

Stats can vary slightly depending on exact criteria (temperature only vs. wind chill/precip), but the freezing-temp numbers above are the most consistently cited for "frigid" conditions. This topic has gained attention recently due to cold forecasts for playoff games.

Under 1st half got my money. Bears +3.5 looks tasty, too.
Just back from walking the dog. Went our usual 1.5 miles. Today is by far the coldest walk I’ve taken with her this season. I’m 3 hours west of Chicago on the Mississippi River in Iowa. It will be difficult for both teams tonight..

On the course!
1994. Halloween night.

Packers at the Bears. Sideways downpour and 45mph winds. No way the game goes over 34.
