Matt Cassel, whom the New England Patriots named as their franchise player in early February, has been traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cassel has been informed he is being traded to the Chiefs, ESPN.com's John Clayton and ESPN's Michael Smith have confirmed.

The Boston Globe reported on its Web site that official paperwork had been filed with the NFL. The story was first reported by NFL.com.

Cassel had accepted the Patriots' non-exclusive franchise tender, guaranteeing the quarterback at least $14.65 million next season. Cassel faxed his acceptance to the Patriots, the NFL and the NFLPA, but the Patriots also needed to offer him the one-year contract.

The franchise tag's value is the average of the top five salaries for NFL players at a particular position.

Cassel finished 327 of 516 for 3,693 yards, with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

It would be the Chiefs' second acquisition of a major member of the Patriots' organization in as many days; the Chiefs traded for linebacker Mike Vrabel on Friday. It also was orchestrated by one as well -- Scott Pioli, the former Patriots vice president of player personnel who this year was hired as the Chiefs' general manager.

a 2nd round pick for two players who started for you last year? I dont get it other than to open cap space but they could have done that by just not franchising Cassel .....Lets see what they do with the money but on its face i dont think they got enough in return for these two.

I am very surprised they would trade Cassel

now Brady has got to report to duty and play like a all star without breaking his foot.

First Tom Brady is caught numerous times looking like Gisele's well-dressed errand boy, now this.

Belichick doing both Pioli and Cassel a huge favor by not demanding more than the 34th overall pick in the draft for two players who could have brought far more in value from about 30 other NFL teams.
.............................................................

Seriously , for NE not to get that #3 pick is hard to believe. Or at least better than a second round player.

Maybe they have someone special in mind with that pick.

being reported that the patriots were in discussions regarding a three team deal with KC and Tampa that would have given them both a first and third...of course you never know what is the truth but i would like to hear a little more about this scenario. This trade just looks strange from my perspective ....if they were in no rush to make a big free agent splash i do not understand what the rush was in making this trade rather than see what else you might get for offers.

I think it is a good trade for both teams, KC now has a legit qb, and NE needs to get younger especially on the defensive side of the ball. They now can move up easy in the draft and get a player in the top of the draft if they see someone falling. You never know what Belichick has up his sleeve next, we will see.

Under a mask.
Frees up space, and a 2nd rounder. There gonna do 1 of 2things.Sign there free agents to be that are on there last years.

Or go for the gusto and sign excisting free agent(s).Pref. a linebacker and or a cornerback.
Me personally would go for broke.

This in reality could be there last shot at another title for a while.Sign Peppers, get a top notch cornerback and worry about the future later .

Thats my take.

Astounding allegations: Bill Belichick did something friendly

Of course, this "something friendly" would also be unethical and possibly a gross violation of NFL rules, but that's not the astounding part.

What's astounding is the notion that Bill Belichick would do anything out of friendship, or really, out of any motivation other than winning. I've always seen him as the type of guy who would insist on being the banker in Monopoly, so he could steal money fake money.

The action in question is the Patriots' trading of Matt Cassel to the Kansas City Chiefs for a second-round draft pick. Why is this the source of controversy? Because everyone assumed the Patriots could get a lot more for Cassel than a lonely second-rounder, and because the guy Belichick did trade Cassel to is Scott Pioli, his old pal who helped assemble the Patriots championship teams.

The thinking is that Belichick traded Cassel to the Chiefs at a discount as a favor to his old pal Pioli. At least three people have outright accused Belichick of it, or at least hinted at it: Jay Mariotti compares the trade to Spygate and thinks Roger Goodell needs to take action, Albert Breer talks about the head-scratching going on around the league, and Tim Graham calls the trade "inexplicable."

Graham also reports, via Chris Mortensen, that the Patriots could have gotten a first-round pick, the 12th overall, for Cassel in a three-way trade that would've also involved Jay Cutler, but we'll get to that a bit later. In the meantime, here's a nutshell version of the two different ways of seeing the Cassel-to-KC deal.

1) The "This was an honest trade" side. Bill Belichick would never do anything to hurt his own cause, Cassel still had a lot to prove as a quarterback and the Patriots desperately didn't want to be on the hook to Cassel for $14 million this season, especially if they believe Tom Brady will be healthy.

2) The "Oh, this trade is stinky" side. There's Belichick's reputation as a man who, shall we say, is willing to bend the occasional rule, The Belichick/Pioli relationship, the reports that the Bucs were willing to go as high as a first-and-a-third rounder and not only did Kansas City get Cassel cheap, but the Patriots threw in Mike Vrabel as well.

The stumbling block for me is trying to believe that Bill Belichick did something for the good of some other football team. He's going to give some other team a discount, because he wants to do someone a favor? I just don't see it.

This is Bill Belichick we're talking about here. He'd cheat in a game of Connect Four against a poor orphan child. He didn't become the coach he is by doing people "favors."

Under a mask.
Why would Belichek trade him to Denver.
Mcdaniel groomed Cassel so to speak.
That ,plus Denver is not far off,KC was the safe trade.

Vrabel was gonna be cut lose,so instead of eating his remaining contract he was dealt.
