Report: Chow will take Titans job

By Scott Wolf
Staff Writer

The Tennessee Titans are expected to offer their offensive coordinator's job today to USC assistant coach Norm Chow, according to sources close to the situation.
Chow flew to Nashville, Tenn., on Thursday and formally interviews for the position today. He will receive an offer of approximately $1million per season, sources said. The Titans' offer means Chow must decide if he will leave USC following four successful years as offensive coordinator.

It is a difficult decision for Chow because his family relocated to Southern California last year and his two sons attend USC. But Chow's been unhappy recently over a potential change in his job title and uncertainty over his responsibilities.

USC coach Pete Carroll said Chow is the "likely candidate' to become the Trojans' assistant head coach and there is a possibility Chow would not retain the title of offensive coordinator. Carroll said he is happy with Chow and wants him to return next season, but sources close to Chow believe he is leaning toward going to Tennessee because increasing tension between he and Carroll.

If Chow leaves, a likely candidate to replace him is Oakland Raiders quarterbacks coach Steve Sarkisian, who coached at USC from 2001-2003.

Chow could not be reached for comment Thursday. Carroll said he expects things to become clearer in the next few days, as he tries to finalize his own staff changes. Officially, he needs to hire a quarterbacks coach, but Carroll also wants to promote graduate assistant Ken Norton to full-time status.

Carroll does not want to lose Norton and believes he could eventually serve as defensive coordinator.

If Chow wanted to stay in college football and spurn the NFL, one possible option is Washington, which needs an offensive coordinator. But Huskies coach Tyrone Willingham said this week Chow is not a candidate and is expected to hire former San Francisco 49ers assistant Tim Lappano.

Cant be. None would ever leave USC. I hear even the towel boy at SC turned down a job as equiptment manager for the Chargers. Better double check those facts.

Not so Fast My Friend

Not so Fast My Friend

Guys,
The report my Scott Wolf is just that a report. It is not a fact quite yet. Scott Wolf has been known to write many things about SC football that have turned out to not be true. The latest incident was on signing day when he reported Desean Jackson to SC when the kid was going to Cal.

With all that being said, good luck to Chow if he goes. He has been a great asset to SC and the program.

But do not believe he canot be replaced. A tough loss for sure and it will take some adjustment, but I think that the sky will not fall.

Latest word is that Chow left Nashville without and offer on the table. Coach Fisher did say though he is the leading canidate. Rumors are going around though in which Scott did post in saying Chow is not happy at USC and wants out.

Chows system not carrolls coaching made usc a better team on off. not to say pete can't and is not a good coach but it was the off system that has made the turn around the most and it has worked where ever he has gone, pete is a little upset because norm has got lot of credit, this is not up to pete if norm goes or not , I read this somewhere this is up to norm if he goes. it is all about the system he has and it has worked for many years for many qb's and the calling the right play at the right time in this system. this will be a blow spin it any way you want, but if they keep the same system which is not hard to do , the hard part is calling the right play at the right time in this system. If he goes and they usc stays with system pete could find someone to beable to make the calls in the system or he could do it and let some one else do more deff work. But you can't take away the system that chow has built and used well for 20 + years away from chow and say he was not a big reason for the turn around.

if he goes I say don't let new person change the system which carroll is to smart to do that i would hope or your looking at trouble trying to use a new system, that is why i say if he goes which will be his choice pete can call the plays and keep the system and let someone else do the deff.

Your post is incorrect about USC, Norm Chow and Pete Carroll.

The current system USC is running is NOT Norm Chows system. It is Carroll and Chow's system. In year 1 Carroll let Chow run his system and it simply did not work at USC. It was a major disaster. USC had a better offense with Hacket at USC than Chow. In the off season Carroll and Chow + assistant coaches worked in the off season perfecting the system. You and everyone else think Norm Chow is the only person behind the USC offense. Simply not true.

Your statement about USC offense is what makes USC work is false as well. It is and always has been the Carroll defense. Again, you and the media give the USC offense way too much credit. USC defense I believe has lead or is at at the very least top 5 in creating turnovers over the last few years. Yet people want to marvel over the USC offense but it has been the defense that has turned USC around. Carroll's #1 objective as a DC is to create turnovers.

The USC offense NEVER won a game for USC this year except in blowouts where both sides take credit. Its been all about the USC defense.

Chow will be missed because he is IMO the best OC in the country. But I don't think USC will hurt too much because Chow was "NOT" the only person running the USC offense. As I said, he is not running the CHOW system at USC. Carroll does play a big part in the USC offense and Carroll will continue to play big part with or without Chow. Chow is upset that Carroll wants to make him assistant coach and teach 2 young assistants to become OC's. Carroll is planning for the future and is tired of Chow repeatedly interview and talk about leaving and not leaving. If Chow wants to stay at USC for 10 years he can. Carroll wants stability and he wants a commitment from Chow or wants him to go. Its not good for Chow to keep wanting to leave but not leave. Its not good for the program. Carroll will and wants to promote his coaching staff but doesn't want distractions. Chow is and has become huge distraction. A great example was the week prior to rival UCLA game.

Carroll will never give up being USC DC at USC. That was a reason Orgeron was never promoted as DC at USC but only assistant coach. Carroll loves being DC and calling plays.

*A prime exame is last years sugar bowl with OU vs LSU in BCS NC. LSU defense played very well and you might say dominated. Well they played an OU team that was dominated in their last outing AND against an injured Jason White. BTW, OU last year had no running attack and no Adrian Peterson. Despite that OU played LSU tough and lost close game with the crowd being huge LSU advantage.

Fast forward to this season in OB OU vs USC in BCS NC game. USC defense faced an experienced OU offense especially on the OL and QB. Healthy Jason White. Superstar RB in Adrian Peterson. An undefeated OU team who has not been dominated all year. AND to top it off an OB with more OU sooner fans than USC fans. That all said, USC defense dominated and forced turnovers all night long. Stopped AD who many said couldn't be stopped.

After last years Sugar Bowl everyone gave HUGE HUGE props to LSU defense. After this years OB majority give huge props to USC offense but why not the same love to USC defense? The USC defense was FAR MORE IMPRESSIVE than the LSU defense yet LSU defense gets the praise? Makes no sense. OU offense in the OB was by far more potent than the injured and one dimensional offense LSU faced. Yet everyone praises LSU defense?

All in all, it is my opinion that USC defense is the foundation for the success of USC. Now the USC offense is explosive but the WINS under the Pete Carroll era is a result of the the defense. The data and W's support my opinion.

Next year USC will have a dominating offense because they return everyone and not breaking in ANY starters. The USC offense "might" be the reason USC wins games next year but in the last 3 years its been the USC defense.

Not to put you down or show disrespect Fletcher, but your statements/opinion is incorrect IMO.

Chow and "his" people have been spreading there side of the story on this whole issue. Leaking info and slanting the stories in favor of Chow. They get leaked on message boards and into the newspapers. Making Chow the victom. And of course the newspapers run with it and bla bla bla.

Its just amazing the lack of respect the USC defense gets around the country. Take this message board for example. How many posters here predicted OU offense to roll over USC defense. Peterson to run for 200 yards. Mark my words. If USC faces Ohio St. in the Rose Bowl, I guarantee people will say OSU and the Big 10 is just too physical for USC who plays in the soft Pac 10. Same with Texas & Big 12. Complete joke. Then again, maybe people caught on and USC is now +100 to win the BCS NC.

Here is a LOCK for you and everyone else. I have been told by linesmaker that USC will be -28 pt favorites over Hawaii @UH. I will bet half my account on USC 1h if USC is -14pts or less. This game sets up beautifully for USC 1h. Only weakness on USC will be inexperienced DT and Hawaii doesn't run ball. UH also replaces their QB. On offense USC returns everybody so they should role with or without Chow. You also will get bonus pts with Bush returning a TD or getting big returns. USC will win 1h by 20-30pts.

aren't you concerned that usc has been sluggish in most 1st halfs then turns it up in the 3rd q and blows teams out. why all of a sudden do you like the 1st half line instead of waiting for a 2nd half line. just curious, don't know much about hawaii at all. just know that you always say wait for the 2nd half then take the trojans, thanks.

sounds like a good bet, but thats 8 months away. alot could happen by than. first games of the season you never know which team is going to show up. if USC gets a new OC, you know he is going to tweak it a bit his own way. Akina for Hawaii is not that bad of a QB either. Defense for Hawaii sucks though.

Good pt HoopsGuru. Here is long reply to answer your question. I think this coming season there is lotta $$$ to be made betting USC 1h. Especially early in the year and AT Hawaii. Huge $$$ to be made. :)

Why was USC "O" usually sluggish in 1h of games last year?

4 of the 5 starting offensive lineman were INEXPERIENCED. Next year USC returns every starter except 1, but they get back Winston Justice who was suspended all year last year. He is USC's #1 OL and a 1st round draft pick next year.

USC lost both starting WR's and both were EXCELLENT WR's. Williams and Colbert. USC had zero returning starters at WR position and their #1 WR out of spring practice was suspended last season but will be back this coming season. (Lewis). Steve Smith then turned to be the #1 USC WR as a soph and he broke a bone against CAL and was out most of the year. USC was depleted last year at WR position. Next season USC returns EVERYBODY + Lewis (#1 WR in high school 2 years ago) + Turner (#1 WR in high school this year.)

USC lost their #1 FB (Hancock) for the year because of a weightlifting injury. He is back next season and he is a VERY good pass catching FB.

At TE USC was without their star TE for half the season Byrd. He will be 100% healthy next year. I think he is the best TE in the country and will be a 1st round NFL pick next year. You saw his one handed catch against OU in OB and he also had another crucial one handed catch against OSU in fog.

So all in all, USC returns EVERYBODY on offense except 2 players BUT USC gained 3 players back who did not play last year. Sorta like free agency! Then you factor in another great recruiting class. Carroll and Chow did amazing job last year with such a YOUNG team. People don't realize what players USC lost and how young of a team USC was offensively and somewhat defensively. Chow deserves a lot of credit for this!

USC offense will not struggle next season with or without Chow. Should put up 40pts by the 4th quarter and sit the starters. There is also a lot of room for error for any new or inexperienced OC's.

Oh yeah, Leinart will be starting his 3rd year of CFB so he should be that much better. Last year he didn't have all day to throw like he did his 1st year. Next year he should have all day to throw with a very experienced and talented OL.

NOBODY is stopping the USC offense. OU in the OB couldn't stop an offense lead by freshman and soph. That whole offense matures and USC adds back 3 KEY starters who didn't play last year. Plus Leinart gets his tendonitus fixed in his elbow so he should be stronger.

As for defense USC may struggle somewhat. Lost both starting DT's and 2 starting LB's hurts big time. Could be some growing pains on defense. On flip side, the secondary/safety's should be awesome!

BET HUGE against USC +pts if a team has a good rushing attack and can use the play action effectively. USC defense will struggle against a team who can do that well. Maybe Arkansas if they find decent QB?

*Picture this lineup on offense.

6.5 WR Dwane Jarret, 6.3 WR Lewis, 6.5 WR Turner, RB Reggie Bush splits out at WR, and 6.3 TE Byrd with an "experienced" OL blocking for Leinart who is a very experienced QB. Forget about all the mismatches USC has at the skilled positions. The key is "experienced" OL blocking for Leinart. Leinart got the job done last year with new OL and WR corps so how easy is it gonna be this year when everybody is EXPERIENCED!

Then USC can change it up and put Hancock and White in and go power running game but still have major threat with passing attack because FB Hancock is a superb pass catching FB.

40pts a game by the 4th quarter!

There is a reason USC is +100 to win the NC. Wouldn't be a bad bet taking USC +100 to win NC. Only thing that could cost USC is inexperience at DT and LB. But there is enormous talent replacing those starters but no experience. I already have $750 at +250 on USC to win it all and after spring practice I will determine if I want to go REALLY BIG on USC +100 to win it all. Gotta see how hungry the players are. I do know that exactly 50% of the team was out doing voluntary conditioning with the S&C coach 12 days after they won the Orange Bowl. Pretty impressive.

*One more thing. With Chow USC could beat teams with coaching + raw talent on both sides of ball. For example no way USC should have blown out such an experienced OU squad. I predicted a 7-10pt win not a blowout. With Chow gone, they lose a great coach so now USC will prob. have to rely more on talent to win but fortunately for USC they will have talent with experience. Defensive coaching won't miss a beat but game day adjustments and game planning on offense will miss a beat.

The rumor is if Chow leaves, Carroll is going to replace him with not one but two inexperienced offensive coordinators. QB coach Sarkesian and WR coach Kiffin. Both never have been OC's. Sark played QB for Chow and both have been learning from Chow for 3+ years. So USC will be running the same offense but no "master" at the helm and prob. will suffer with game day mistakes. Learning on the job. USC will have 2 co-OC's which I don't know how it will work. Kinda weird. I wish Carroll would just hire an expeienced OC. Like I said, with all the talent and experience on offense, there will be LOTS of room for error.
