After following the Bengals for years, hold the abuse please, I get the impression that Marvin Lewis has more power than people think. The ability to hire his own staff was a huge step towards improving this franchise. Previous coaches always inherited assistants that were favored by Mike Brown. Letting go the likes of Ken Anderson, Tim Krumrie and Kim Wood was the best thing that ever happened to this franchise. Marvin Lewis is already trying to change the mindset of the whole organization from top to bottom. He held a meeting in which all front office employees were present and introduced themselves and what there job was in the organization, including Mike Brown. Lewis then told them how everyone of them had to play a role in making the franchise a success.
The true gauge on how sucessful the Bengals will be with Marvin Lewis will come during free agency. Signing Lorenzo Neal and Takeo Spikes before the start of FA would help them significantly in determining who to target in FA. Lewis has the ability to capture players attention and bring out the best in their abilities. Now the test will be whether he can sell them on coming to the Bengals and trying to turn around one of the worst franchises in the NFL for the past 12 years. Lewis and his assistants have spoke of something quite frequently since they have been hired....Winning Superbowls. That is something that none of the previous coaches since Sam Wyche have even whispered about. A new off season conditioning program will also benefit the players tremendously. As former players stated... The Bengals worked themselves into shape about the 8th game into the season. I don't think that this will be a problem in the upcoming season. As for the draft, I think the Bengals would love to trade down out of the top spot and stay in the top 10. If the Bengals are able to address some of their defensive needs in FA and can trade down within the top 5, I would not be surprised to see them take Charles Rogers or Andre Johnson. That is a longshot, but a possibility. The hiring of Bill Tobin may be the biggest impact on the draft. The greatest needs are DL, CB, C, OG and TE in that order. Only time will tell..... But the Bengals could be a major surprise in the next couple of years.......
