Crosby's favorite opponent and this weekend's NHL odds and best bets

We've got an exciting weekend of NHL action with plenty of great games including a western Canadian showdown in Winnipeg and Sidney Crosby facing off against a familiar foe. We cover that and much more as we bring you the betting notes and trends you need to beat the odds on the ice.

Wild Wild West

The Calgary Flames head to Winnipeg to take on the Jets Saturday night, in what is a battle between the second and third-best teams in the Western Conference. The Flames are slim road underdogs at +115 thanks to a strong road record of 21-13 this season. That being said the Jets are 23-9-3 at Bell MTS Place.

The best bet for this matchup might be the Over with the Flames fourth in the league in goals per game, and the Jets seventh. Winnipeg is 5-1-1 to the Over in their last seven games, while Calgary is 20-9-2 to the Over in their previous 31.

Opposing Trends Clash

The Chicago Blackhawks have been an absolute gift for Over bettors, having gone 24-2-1 to the Over in their last 27 games. Saturday the Blackhawks are underdogs against the Montreal Canadiens who are 15-4-2 to the Under in their last 21 games as a favorite. If you're wondering which trend is more likely to continue, we're just gonna throw it out there that the Blackhawks will likely be starting Cam Ward and his 3.72 GAA between the pipes on Saturday.

Capitals' tough date on the road

The defending Stanley Cup Champions face-off against the odds on favorites to win this year's Cup as the Washington Capitals travel to the Sunshine State to play against Tampa Bay on Saturday. Both teams have gone 8-2 over their last ten games and the Capitals are -155 underdogs in this one despite having the third best road record in the league at 21-13-2.

That might have something to do with Tampa Bay's dominance at home where they have gone 29-6-1, the puckline for TB might hold some value though. They are by far the most lucrative puckline team in the league returning bettors a profit of 1194.01 on the season and converting on the puckline at home more than half the time (20-17).

The Kid is king in Philly

One of the best rivalries in hockey is reignited Sunday as the Flyers head west on the I-76 to take on the Penguins on Sunday. The Flyers are in desperation mode and need to go on a late-season run if they want to sneak into the playoffs.

Philadelphia fans have never bothered to hide their contempt for Sidney Crosby, and with good reason. Since he entered the league Sid the Kid has scored more goals against Philly than any other team, potting 41 goals in 66 games (and also adding 58 assists for good measure). Crosby has scored a goal on the Flyers in every game against them this season, for a total of three goals and six points in three games. Look into how much a Crosby goal pays out Sunday.

Goaltender Profile: Sam Montembeault, Florida Panthers

While the Blackhawks are getting most of the attention for being an almost automatic Over bet, the Panthers have been the second-most reliable Over bet in the league, mostly thanks to a struggling goaltending duo. Roberto Luongo has a GAA of 3.16 and a save percentage of .897 while James Reimer isn't much better with a 3.02 GAA and .902 save percentage.

However the 22-year-old Montembeault might have wrestled away the starting job after three consecutive strong performances in which he went 3-0 with a 1.66 GAA and a save percentage of .933. It will be interesting to see how many starts Montembeault gets the rest of the season, beginning with Saturday's game against Los Angeles.

Injury Update: Kris Letang, Pittsburgh Penguins

Kris Letang was back to full participation in practice on Friday afternoon. Letang suffered an upper-body injury on February 23 and this was his first session without wearing a non-contact jersey since then.

The blue-liner has been one of the highest scoring defensemen in the league with 53 points in 60 games. The Pens haven't ruled out Letang returning to the lineup as early as this weekend with games scheduled against St. Louis and Philly.

Hat Trick Trends

The Arizona Coyotes and Florida Panthers remain the best puckline underdogs in the business. With their penchant for losing by a single goal coming in handy for bettors. Arizona has made a Puckline profit of 526.91 as an dog this season while the Panthers have banked 314.51.

The Dallas Stars are the best Under play in the NHL this season with the score going below the total in 41 of their 61 games this season.

The Philadelphia Flyers are 8-2 in their last 10 games on the road which bodes well for their road-trip this weekend with games in Toronto and Pittsburgh.

Columbus at Boston: The B's and Jackets just met in C-Bus on Tuesday, with Columbus coming away with a 7-4 victory. Believe it or not that was the first meeting of the season between these two Eastern Conference playoff hopefuls, and they'll also meet again on April 2 in Ohio. The Jackets head into this one with a tough back-to-back situation. In the second end of a back-to-back Columbus is 5-6 this season. They also headed in Friday's game with Columbus on a 4-1 'under' run.

Washington at Tampa Bay: The defending Stanley Cup champions against the potential champs this season? The Lightning have the league's best record, so this is gonna be a war. It's hard to believe, but these teams have yet to face each other this season. This is the first of two meetings in the next five days, and they'll square off three times between now and March 30. The Lightning have won four in a row at home since a 4-2 setback to the Maple Leafs on Jan. 17. The Caps will be decisive underdogs in this one, and they're 2-1 (+190) in their past three as a 'dog.

Nashville at San Jose: This will be the third and final meeting between the Predators and Sharks, although there is a real good chance they'll meet in the postseason. San Jose has won each of the first two meetings by a 5-4 score, as the 'over' comfortably hit in both. Each of the four meetings in this series have cashed the 'over', too. The road team is 5-1 across the past six meetings in this series, too.

Preview: Predators (40-27) at Sharks (43-20)

The San Jose Sharks had a chance to become the first Western Conference team to clinch a playoff berth Thursday. Instead, playing for the third time in four nights, the Sharks saw their six-game winning streak end with a 4-2 loss to visiting Florida.

The Sharks will try to get back on the winning track -- and clinch that playoff spot -- Saturday night when they play host to the Nashville Predators.

"Sure, every time you lose a game it's opportunity lost, but you're not going to win every game the rest of the way," San Jose coach Peter DeBoer told the media after the loss. "Two weeks ago, we were seven points back. I think we're in a pretty good spot, and we worked awful hard to get there."

The Sharks won Monday at Minnesota and Tuesday at Winnipeg before returning home to face the Panthers.

"We didn't look good," San Jose center Logan Couture told NHL.com of the Florida game. "We didn't look fast. We looked slow. Turning pucks over. Penalties. I'm sure the energy level looked like it was low, but we got to find a way to play better than that."

The Predators are 1-1-0 on their three-game California trip. They lost 3-2 Tuesday at Anaheim before rebounding with a 3-1 victory Thursday at Los Angeles.

"(There are always points in the) season where you look to build off of something, or a certain game, especially late in the season like this, where you want to start getting on a roll, and (Thursday) was one of those games for us," Predators forward Craig Smith told NHL.com. "It was great. When we go back and look at film, we're probably going to see a lot of good things ... so it was great to see."

The Predators fell behind by multiple goals in each of their previous two games before the win against the Kings, and lost both games.

"There's two ways of looking at it -- you can look down and feel bad about yourself or pick up your crap and move forward, and I think that's what we're doing here," Smith said. "We're taking some ownership in our game from what happened in Anaheim, and that's what this group has been good at the last couple years. We take ownership of the way we show up and the way we want to play, so we have to take this game forward and try to replicate it in San Jose."

Added Colton Sissons, who like Smith scored a goal Thursday: "We played the right way, we played hard from the start to finish and there were very few lulls throughout the game," he told NHL.com. "Everybody stepped up and did their job, and that's great to see. We need a lot of that this time of year heading into the playoffs, so we're really happy with the result."

The Sharks announced Thursday that defenseman Radim Simek will undergo surgery to repair damage to the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee. Simek was injured Tuesday in Winnipeg.

Sharks center Joe Thornton played in his 1,555th career game Thursday to pass Jarome Iginla for 13th place in league history.

13) If you look at the last 13 national champs, those teams went 12-1 against the spread in their first round tournament game. Only exception was Kentucky in 2012, who won 81-66 (-26). UConn won its first round game in OT in 2014, but covered 89-81 (-5).

12) Bobby Hurley coached Buffalo for two years (42-20), then bolted western NY for Arizona State; his Sun Devils have to beat St John?s in Dayton, and if they do, Hurley and Buffalo will be re-united Friday in Tulsa. Buffalo spanked ASU?s rival Arizona by 21 in first round last year.

Since replacing Hurley, Nate Oats is 95-42 in four years at Buffalo, but before the Bulls get to play Arizona State, the Sun Devils still have to beat St John?s.

11) Richard Pitino?s Minnesota Gophers playing Louisville, the school that ran his father out of town two years ago, is classic sidebar material. Rick Pitino won the national title with Louisville six short years ago. Lot of stuff has happened since then.

Rick Pitino is coaching pro ball in Greece now; UCLA, UNLV have jobs open, which lends itself to speculation, but for now Richard?s Gophers vs Louisville is the main event.

10) Tennessee Volunteers are a #2-seed in the South Region, but they can?t be very happy about the prospects of a second round game against Cincinnati???in Columbus, OHIO.

9) Montana-Michigan play in the first round for the second year in a row; I?m thinking that could?ve been avoided.

8) Clemson, NC State and Texas are the highest-rated teams that didn?t get in the NCAA?s; Lipscomb, Furman and NC-Greensboro also have to be pretty disappointed.

7) No team has ever lost its first conference tournament game, and then gone on to win the national championship. Texas Tech, LSU, Purdue, Maryland fall into that category.

6) Virginia Tech?s star PG Justin Robinson missed the last 12 games with a foot injury, but he?ll be back for the NCAA tournament. Hokies play Saint Louis in the first round Friday.
