Caps jump out early, beat Hurricanes
April 11, 2019
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin combined to score three goals on the first eight shots, and the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals survived a surge from Andrei Svechnikov and the Carolina Hurricanes to win Game 1 of their first-round series 4-2 on Thursday night.

Backstrom scored twice and Ovechkin scored on the power play to fire up a raucous sellout crowd in the first playoff game in Washington since celebrating the franchise's first title in June. Defenseman John Carlson tied an NHL playoff record with three assists in one period. Lars Eller sealed with an empty-netter with 36.6 seconds left.

It looked as though the Capitals would roll toward a statement victory against an opponent lacking playoff experience, but the pesky Hurricanes turned up the heat. Petr Mrazek bounced back from a rough start to make four huge saves early in the third period, while Svechnikov scored twice in his playoff debut to put some fear into the Capitals. Braden Holtby made 27 saves and the penalty kill came up big on two late Carolina power plays to allow Washington to take a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 is Saturday in Washington.

The Hurricanes were playing their first playoff game since 2009 after ending the league's longest drought.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, BRUINS 1

BOSTON (AP) - Mitch Marner scored twice, the second on a short-handed penalty shot to give Toronto the lead for good, and Toronto won the opener of the first-round playoff series. It was the Maple Leafs' first postseason penalty shot in 20 years.

Frederik Andersen made 37 saves and William Nylander and John Tavares also scored for Toronto, which swiped the home-ice advantage in the best-of-seven series as it tries to advance through Boston for the first time in six tries.

Tuukka Rask stopped 29 shots for Boston, and Patrice Bergeron scored a power-play goal midway through the first on a pass from Brad Marchand.

Game 2 is Saturday night in Boston.

Quote of the Day

Friday?s quiz
Which major league ballpark has a swimming pool behind the fence in right-center field?

Thursday?s quiz
Last time a Canadian franchise won the Stanley Cup was when Montreal won in 1993.

Wednesday?s quiz
Mike D?Antoni was the Lakers? coach the last time they made the playoffs, in 2013.

***************************

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??

13) Baseball season is only 15 days old, and San Diego Padres have already had three starting pitchers (Paddack, Margevicius, Avila) make their major league debuts. None of the three ever pitched at the AAA level, which is very unusual- the three combined to make only eight starts at the AA level, which is revolutionary thinking.

12) Teams/players have exit interviews after each season; if HBO wants to do a good reality show along the lines of Hard Knocks, these interviews would be fun to watch.

No matter what team it is, there are always unhappy players at the end of a season; some of these teams don?t have many happy players. Must be some interesting conversation going on, moreso in basketball/baseball, teams with smaller rosters.

11) I mean, Sacramento Kings just finished a 39-43 season, their best season in 13 years, yet they fired their coach. How do you think that exit interview went?

Lot of politics in NBA coaching circles; the coach tried to win games, people in the front office wanted him to play the younger players more, which would?ve resulted in fewer wins, but maybe more longterm success if the younger players developed faster.

Maybe there?s a reason Sacramento hasn?t had a winning season in over a decade.

10) Southern Miss recently hired a new athletic director, and Thursday basketball coach Doc Sadler quit, probably to become an assistant to Fred Hoiberg at Nebraska.

Sadler was at USM for five years, re-buillding a program that was ravaged by NCAA sanctions. Golden Eagles went 20-13 this year, their best season under Sadler- they started three seniors, so the new coach will have some recruiting to do.

Whats slightly odd is that Sadler was Nebraska?s head coach from 2006-12, when the Huskers moved from the Big X to the Big 14. He was making $360,000 at Southern Miss, will take a pay cut to become an assistant, but probably not a big one.

Just catches your attention when a pretty good head coach quits to become an assistant.

9) If I ran major league baseball, I?d end all blackout policies, would let people use all the highlights from major/minor league games. In short, I?d give the game maximum exposure so that the casual fan/non-fans can see how excellent it is and they?ll develop an interest.

Baseball does the opposite, and I?m guessing there is a financial reason why, but over the long haul, getting younger people invested in the game seems like a smarter business plan.

8) Not really sure why, but ESPN doesn?t have Baseball Tonight anymore, but they have an hour-long NBA show during the day year-round. Baseball needs more exposure.

7) Coaching contract:
? Nevada signed Steve Alford to replace Eric Musselman as coach.

6) Every returning Nevada player has entered the transfer portal, except for two guys who transferred there last year, and aren?t eligible until 2nd semester next season. Alford is going to have to do quick work re-recruiting the returnees, or he?ll have to recruit a whole new team.

Similar thing at LSU, where five players have declared for the NBA Draft; if they fire Will Wade, and it seems likely they will, the new coach is going to be handed a depleted roster.

5) In the bottom of the 5th inning Wednesday night, Mets had seven consecutive batters reach base against Minnesota, without ever hitting a fair ball- six walks and a hit batter, against three different pitchers. All in all, Mets scored six runs in the inning, with two singles.

4) Cubs? pitcher Jon Lester started his big league career 0-66 at the plate, but since then he?s hit .130 (27-207) to raise his career batting average to .099.

3) Patrick Reed shot a 73 at The Masters Thursday; each of the last eight rounds at The Masters by that year?s defending champ have been over par.

2) Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 6? Last season, Nathan Eovaldi allowed 14 homers in 111 IP. He?s allowed six homers this season in 15 IP. Boston scored twice in 9th for the comeback win; both teams are now 4-9 this season.

1) On February 12, 2016, Milwaukee traded Khris Davis to the A?s, for Jacob Nottingham and Bubba Derby.

Since that trade, Davis has homered 142 times for Oakland. Nottingham is 4-20 in nine major league games, Derby has a 4.16 ERA in 103 minor league games. Pretty good trade for the A?s.

Tampa aims to bounce back from collapse
April 11, 2019
By The Associated Press

The Tampa Bay Lightning faced little adversity in the regular season on the way to a record-tying 62 wins and the most points in a season in 23 years.

That all changed as fast as the Lightning squandered a three-goal lead before losing 4-3 to the Columbus Blue Jackets in Game 1 of their first-round series Wednesday night. Now a team that lost consecutive games just twice all season, must rebound in Game 2 at home on Friday night (7 p.m. EDT, CNBC) or be in danger of a quick playoff stay following a spectacular run all season.

Coach Jon Cooper acknowledges that blowing the big lead has put ''pressure'' on his team heading into Game 2.

''I actually thought our biggest foe last night was us,'' Cooper said Thursday. ''Columbus had no quit in them and good on them. Our biggest obstacle was us. We'll just see how our response is tomorrow. If we're going to go on past history, we've usually responded pretty well.''

The Blue Jackets were the sixth NHL team to comeback from being down at least three goals to beat a No. 1 seed in a postseason game.

A comeback seemed farfetched when they fell behind 3-0 in the first period. But Columbus rallied back when Nick Foligno scored on a breakaway in the second period following an errant pass by Ryan McDonagh. The Blue Jackets then scored three times in the third, tying it on a short-handed goal by Josh Anderson and getting the go-ahead goal on the power play from Seth Jones with 5:55 remaining.

But building on that won't be easy against a star-studded team featuring scoring champion Nikita Kucherov, star Steven Stamkos and stellar goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy.

''Who knows what happens in the series,'' Columbus coach John Tortorella said. ''I'm not worried about our team, how they handle things. Do we succeed? I don't know. I don't have a crystal ball. But I'm very comfortable that they can handle a lot different things. Momentum swings in the series and stuff that happens.''

Here are some other things to watch Friday night:

Penguins at Islanders, New York leads 1-0 (7:30 p.m. EDT, NBCSN)

Making their 13th straight appearance in the playoffs, with three championships and two other deep runs, the Pittsburgh Penguins know they can't get discouraged with a tough series-opening loss.

Pittsburgh trailed three times in regulation and tied the score each time before falling 4-3 in overtime against the New York Islanders in Game 1 of their first-round series.

''The guys have been here before,'' the Penguins' Justin Schultz said. ''We know it's a long series. You can't hang your head on each play. You got to move on and worry about the next shift.''

Star center Sidney Crosby, who was held off the scoresheet in the opener, wasn't surprised by the close game.

''These games are going to be close, they're going to be tight the entire series,'' he said.

The Penguins also knew how tough the Islanders play after splitting four meetings in the regular season. New York's stingy defense earned the Jennings Trophy by allowing the fewest goals in the league this season.

---

Blues at Jets, Winnipeg leads 1-0 (9:30 p.m. EDT, CNBC)

Holding onto leads was a problem all season for Winnipeg so maybe it shouldn't have been a surprise it happened again in the playoff opener for the Jets.

Winnipeg led 1-0 after two periods in Game 1 against the Blues before losing 2-1. The Jets were tied with Florida for the most losses in the regular season when leading after two periods with nine.

''We've had a couple of those where they score the winning goal in the last two minutes,'' forward Patrik Laine said. ''So it's always tough, but that's how it goes sometimes.''

---

Golden Knights at Sharks, San Jose leads 1-0 (10:30 p.m. NBCSN)

San Jose's big offseason move paid off in the opener of the playoff rematch against Vegas.

Star defenseman Erik Karlsson showed why both the Sharks and Golden Knights coveted him so much when Ottawa put him on the trading block, recording two assists and playing more than 26 minutes in San Jose's 5-2 victory on Wednesday night.

It was just Karlsson's second game back after missing 17 games with a groin injury.

''I think he'll get better and better which is good for us,'' coach Peter DeBoer said. ''He's got another level he can get to. He makes a huge difference for us, in our defensive and offensive game.''

Vegas struggled to generate much of anything, putting just 10 shots on goal in the first two periods before applying more pressure in the third when it was too late to help.

Getting off to a faster start in Game 2 will be key for the Golden Knights, who had scored in the opening five minutes in eight of 14 previous meetings against San Jose.

''We didn't have our support guys coming through the middle,'' defenseman Shea Theodore said. ''I thought we were turning over more pucks than we should of instead getting deep and keeping it simple. ... We shot ourselves in the foot.''

Today's biggest bets and line moves: Bettors hammer Lightning odds vs. Blue Jackets
Patrick Everson

Tampa Bay was the NHL's No. 1 regular-season team by far, yet blew a 3-0 Game 1 lead against Columbus. However, the Lightning are drawing plenty of Game 2 money as huge -270 favorites tonight.

The NHL?s best team by a mile in the regular season somehow came unglued in its playoff opener and looks to rebound Friday night. Covers checks in on the action and odds movement for three of this evening?s Stanley Cup playoff games, with insights from Will Bernanke, lead analyst for CG Analytics in Las Vegas.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Tampa Bay Lightning ? Open: -260; Move: -250; Move: -260; Move: -270

Tampa Bay posted 62 wins and 128 points in the regular season, and looked every bit the part of a Stanley Cup favorite through the first period of Wednesday?s Game 1 against Columbus. The top-seeded Lightning (62-17-3-1) had a 3-0 lead at first intermission, then gave up four answered goals and lost 4-3 as hefty -250 favorites.

Columbus needed a strong late-season push to nab the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, and appeared overmatched while allowing those three first-period goals. But the Blue Jackets (48-31-3-1) got a goal in the second, then scored three goals in a six-minute stretch of the third to nab a stunning road upset as +200 underdogs.

Bettors fully expect the best team in the NHL to rebound in this 7 p.m. ET faceoff.

?Ticket count is 64 percent Tampa Bay and money 81 percent Tampa Bay,? Bernanke said of moneyline action at CG books, including at The Cosmopolitan and Venetian on the Vegas Strip. ?Puck line (Tampa Bay -1.5 goals) is also 98 percent Tampa Bay, and we also took a $10,000 bet this morning on Tampa to win the series at the adjusted price of -200.

?It looks like we will need Columbus to win and/or cover the puck line. Bettors feel there is no way on earth that Tampa falls behind 2-0 to the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets.?

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders ? Open: +110; Move: +115; Move: +110; Move: +105; Move: +110

Pittsburgh has the Stanley Cup pedigree, but came up short in Wednesday?s best-of-7 series opener. The Penguins (44-26-10-3) traded goals throughout Game 1, tying it at 3 late in the third period, but losing 4-3 in overtime in a pick ?em game.

New York failed to reach the postseason the past two years, but put up a solid 103 points to make the eight-team East field this year. The Islanders (49-27-2-5) then held up on home ice against Sidney Crosby and Co., and now have a shot at a 2-0 series lead in this 7:30 p.m. ET puck drop.

?Ticket count is 2/1 on Pittsburgh, and 92 percent of the money is on the Penguins,? Bernanke said, noting a similarity to the Columbus-Tampa game. ?It looks like bettors feel there is no way Pittsburgh falls down 2-0.?

Vegas Golden Knights at San Jose Sharks ? Open: -135; Move: -132; Move: -135; Move: -130; Move: -135; Move: -130

Vegas was the darling newcomer to the NHL last year, streaking all the way to the Stanley Cup Final before losing to Washington. This year?s playoffs got off to a much bumpier start, as the Golden Knights (43-33-5-2) had no answer in Wednesday?s Game 1, falling behind 3-0 on the way to a 5-2 loss as even-money road underdogs.

San Jose got out of the gate quickly as it began work to avenge a second-round loss to Vegas in the 2017-18 playoffs. The Sharks (47-27-6-3) led 3-0 less than eight minutes into the second period and salted away the game with an empty-netter late in the third period to win as -120 home favorites.

?Ticket count is 3/1 Knights and money is 2/1 Knights. Bettors feel Vegas will even the series up,? Bernanke said of a 10:30 p.m. ET clash. ?It looks like bettors are trying their luck with the zig-zag theory, that the team down 1-0 in the series will win Game 2. So we need the Sharks, Columbus and New York.?

Jackets rout Lightning, up 2-0 in series
April 12, 2019
By The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Matt Duchene had a goal and three assists, Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves, and the Columbus Blue Jackets stunned the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-1 on Friday night to take a 2-0 first-round series lead.

Columbus also got goals from Cam Atkinson, Zach Werenski, Riley Nash and Artemi Panarin. The Blue Jackets started the postseason last season by winning the first two games of the first-round series with eventual Stanley Cup Washington, which won the next four games.

Mikhail Sergachev had a goal and Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 22 shots for the Lightning, who lost two games in a row just twice in the regular season. Tampa Bay matched the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings for the most wins in a regular season with 62.

Lightning right wing Nikita Kucherov, who led the NHL with 128 points, was held off the scoresheet for the second consecutive game and picked up tripping, boarding and 10-minute misconduct penalties late in the third period.

Game 3 is in Columbus on Sunday night.

ISLANDERS 3, PENGUINS 1

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Jordan Eberle and Josh Bailey scored in the third period and New York beat Pittsburgh for a 2-0 lead in their first-round playoff series.

Anthony Beauvillier also scored and Robin Lehner stopped 32 shots to help New York open a postseason series with two wins for the first time since sweeping Edmonton in the 1983 Stanley Cup Final for the Islanders' fourth straight championship.

Mathew Barzal had two assists in a chippy, physical game that featured a lot of hard hits and some skirmishes, especially in the first two periods - and also after the final buzzer.

Erik Gudbranson scored and Matt Murray finished with 31 saves for the Penguins, who have lost the first two games of a postseason series for the first time since the 2013 Eastern Conference finals against Boston.

Game 3 is Sunday at Pittsburgh.

BLUES 4, JETS 3

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Oskar Sundqvist scored twice to lead the St. Louis Blues over the Jets.

Pat Maroon and Ryan O'Reilly also scored for the Blues, who lead the best-of-seven matchup 2-0 and host Game 3 on Sunday night. Rookie Jordan Binnington made 26 saves.

Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele each had a goal and one assist for the Jets, Patrik Laine also scored and Dustin Byfuglien had a pair of assists. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 28 shots.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 5, SHARKS 3

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Mark Stone scored the tiebreaking goal on a power play created by a penalty that negated an apparent San Jose goal and the Vegas Golden Knights responded after blowing a three-goal lead in the first period to beat the Sharks and tie their playoff series at one game apiece.

The teams packed an entire game into the opening minutes with the Golden Knights scoring three goals in the first 6:11 and the Sharks rallying for three more in the final 3:01 to become the first team in NHL history to tie a playoff game in the first period after falling behind 3-0. The craziness continued at the start of the second period when the Sharks briefly celebrated an apparent goal in the opening minute by Brent Burns. That quickly turned to frustration when the officials waved off the goal because Logan Couture interfered with Marc-Andre Fleury, giving the Golden Knights the power play.

Cody Eakin, Colin Miller and Max Pacioretty all scored in the first period to stake the Golden Knights to the big lead after losing the opener 5-2. William Karlsson added a short-handed goal in the third to ice it.

Couture, Tomas Hertl and Joe Thornton scored for the Sharks.

Game 3 will be Sunday night in Las Vegas.

Saturday?s 6-pack

Some of the better matchups for the Big East-Big X challenge next season:

? Kansas @ Villanova

? Seton Hall @ Iowa State

? Oklahoma @ Creighton

? West Virginia @ St John?s

? Butler @ Baylor

? Xavier @ TCU

Quote of the Day
?They?re losing one of the best human beings in the league.?
Steve Kerr, talking about the Lakers firing Luke Walton

Saturday?s quiz
Where did Luke Walton play his college basketball?

Friday?s quiz
Chase Field in Arizona has a swimming pool behind the fence in right-center field.

Thursday?s quiz
Last time a Canadian franchise won the Stanley Cup was when Montreal won in 1993.

*****************************

Saturday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??.

13) Marquette guard Markus Howard will play his senior year at Marquette instead of testing the waters in the NBA, which is surprising.

Howard is from Arizona, but transferred to Findlay Prep in Las Vegas after his sophomore season in HS, then skipped his senior year altogether to go to Marquette, at age 17. When you do that, you?re pretty much accelerating the clock for when you can play in the NBA.

For a player like this to stay four years in college is very unusual.

12) Then there is Kevin Porter Jr, who declared for the draft after scoring 9.5 ppg in 21 games (4 starts) as a freshman at USC. He played 22.1 mpg, missed 11 of the Trojans? 33 games, shot 41.2% on the arc, 52.2% on foul line. This is a player who is listed as a top 15 talent in the draft, but what about this past season indicates that? He started four games for a 16-17 USC team.

11) Louisville poached St. Joseph?s G Lamarr Kimble as a grad transfer, a big pickup.

10) Lakers fired Luke Walton Friday; can?t be lot of fun hanging around there these days. Walton is expected to land in Sacramento as the Kings? new coach.

Tyronn Lue is expected to get the Lakers? job; no shock considering he coached Lebron James in Cleveland.

9) Toronto Raptors? forward OG Anunoby had an emergency appendectomy, is expected to miss at least two weeks.

8) Random stat: Raptors have played in 15 NBA playoff series; they lost the first game of those series 13 times, going 3-12 vs spread overall.

7) July 31, 2018, the Pirates traded Tyler Glasnow, Austin Meadows and a minor leaguer to Tampa Bay, for Chris Archer.

Archer is a good pitcher, but Glasnow allowed one run in 17 IP in his first three starts, and now Meadows has knocked in 15 runs in Tampa Bay?s first 13 games.

Rays have played seven games on this road trip; they?ve scored in top of the first inning in every game.

6) Interesting fact from Anthony Castrovince: 154 position players retired with only one career plate appearance in the major leagues; 16 of them got a hit. Only five of them are still alive.

5) Baseball season is 16 days old; Bronx Bombers already have 12 players on the IL.

4) Cardinals? OF Harrison Bader was hit by a pitch with bases loaded twice Wednesday, first time that happened since 2005 (Reed Johnson, Toronto).

3) NFL Draft is two weeks away; some notes:
? Most picks: Giants, Patriots, 12 each
? Fewest picks; Seattle (4).
? Multiple 1st round picks: Oakland 3, Packers/Giants (2).
? No 1st round pick: Dallas-Browns-Saints-Bears.

2) Kid who scored 15.8 ppg LY for Bucknell will go to Kentucky next year as a grad transfer. Stuff like this is why there were fewer first round upsets in NCAA?s this year. The better players in the low major conference have big eyes, hoping to play a season getting on national TV a lot.

1) Not that the NBA playoffs are boring, but since 1988, there have been 136 playoff series where the underdog was +$500 or higher; of those 136 series, the favorite won 129 of them.

Does anyone think there is a team that can beat the Warriors best-of-7, unless Golden State gets at least two starters hurt? Nah, me either.

NHL Stanley Cup playoffs best bets and prop predictions: Flames to keep up third period dominance
Monty Andrews

Calgary was virtually unbeatable in the third period during the regular season, boasting an unimaginable +54 goal differential in the frame.

Two home teams look to seize 2-0 leads in their respective best-of-seven Stanley Cup series, while two others look to avoid going down 2-0 before hitting the road.

It's Day 4 of the NHL postseason, and the Boston Bruins and Nashville Predators already find themselves in must-win mode in their respective series against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Dallas Stars. Here are the top betting trends and tips to monitor as the first-round action continues:

CAROLINA HURRICANES AT WASHINGTON CAPITALS

Moneyline Odds: Carolina +140/Washington -160
Over/Under: 5.5 goals
Start Time: 3 p.m. ET, Capital One Arena, Washington, D.C.

The Capitals' 4-2 triumph over the Hurricanes in Game 1 extended their recent home dominance over Carolina, a stretch in which Washington has won nine of 11 games while holding the Hurricanes to two or fewer goals on eight occasions. And each of the Capitals' previous five wins over Carolina have come by multiple goals ? so if you're leaning toward the defending Stanley Cup champions to extend that trend, you should consider taking the hosts on the puckline at +160.

DALLAS STARS AT NASHVILLE PREDATORS

Moneyline Odds: Dallas +135/Nashville -155
Over/Under: 5 goals
Start Time: 6 p.m. ET, Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, Tenn.

A first-period goal is a rarity for both the Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators ? but bettors shouldn't let the Game 1 result sour them on what could be a profitable early prop. Both teams ranked at the bottom of the league in first-period goals in the regular season, and will be looking to continue their strong defensive play having ranked second and third in the NHL in fewest goals against. Look for the teams to go under the first-period goal total in what could be a low-scoring Game 2.

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS AT BOSTON BRUINS

Moneyline Odds: Toronto +125/Boston -145
Over/Under: 6 goals
Start Time: 8 p.m. ET, TD Garden, Boston, Mass.

The Toronto Maple Leafs had no trouble with a three-goal lead in their latest game encounter with the Boston Bruins, cruising to a 4-1 victory to seize control of their best-of-seven series. And while it's too early to push the panic button, it is noteworthy that the Bruins have now lost four consecutive games as a favorite. But with the Leafs having dropped six in a row following a victory and six of their past eight games in Boston, we like the Bruins to bounce back in a big way in Game 2.

COLORADO AVALANCHE AT CALGARY FLAMES

Moneyline Odds: Colorado +190/Calgary -230
Over/Under: 6 goals
Start Time: 10:30 p.m. ET, Scotiabank Saddledome, Calgary, Alta.

The Flames were their usual dominant selves in the final 20 minutes of their series-opening 4-0 win over Colorado, scoring twice to bolster the lead they built with a pair of second-period tallies. Calgary was virtually unbeatable in the third period during the regular season, boasting an unimaginable +54 goal differential in the frame. And with Colorado ranking fourth in the NHL with 103 third-period goals, it's no stretch to go with the third as the highest-scoring period in this game.

Capitals beat Hurricanes 4-3 on OT for 2-0 series lead
April 13, 2019
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Brooks Orpik scored less than two minutes into overtime, Alex Ovechkin had two assists and the Washington Capitals beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 on Saturday to give the defending Stanley Cup champions a 2-0 lead in the first-round series.

The tone was set for a wacky afternoon when a rat fell out of a hallway ceiling during the Hurricanes' pregame soccer match. The weird vibes lasted long after the dead rat was removed - from a questionable ejection for a check to the head to a shot off one goalie's mask and another that went in off the other goalie's backside.

Ovechkin assisted on goals by Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson to help put Washington up two games to none in a series for just the third time in the past five years. In perhaps his final NHL postseason, Orpik scored 1:48 into the extra period of the Capitals' first overtime playoff game since they eliminated Pittsburgh in the second round a year ago.

Braden Holtby stopped 25 shots, and T.J. Oshie also scored. Holtby allowed goals to Lucas Wallmark, Sebastian Aho and Jordan Staal, the last on a Carolina power play with 5 minutes left in regulation.

Carolina goaltender Petr Mrazek rebounded from an inconsistent Game 1 to make 29 saves.

Game 3 Monday night in Raleigh in the Hurricanes' first home playoff game since May 26, 2009.

BRUINS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 1

BOSTON (AP) - Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron scored, Tuukka Rask stopped 30 shots and Boston beat Toronto to tie the series at one game apiece.

Two nights after Toronto beat Boston 4-1 in the opener to steal away home-ice advantage, the Bruins dominated their Atlantic Division rivals, taking a 3-0 lead with a 29-16 edge in shots on goal into the third period. Charlie Coyle and Danton Heinen also scored for the Bruins.

Nazem Kadri scored the Leafs' only goal midway through the third, and Frederik Andersen made 37 saves for Toronto, which returns home for Games 3 and 4 on Monday and Wednesday nights.

PREDATORS 2, STARS 1, OT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Craig Smith scored five minutes into overtime to give Nashville the victory over Dallas, tying the first-round Western Conference series 1-1.

Smith scored his first this postseason from the inside edge of the left circle to snap a three-game playoff skid on home ice for Nashville.

Rocco Grimaldi also scored for Nashville, and Pekka Rinne made 22 saves. The Predators had lost five of their last six postseason games in the place they call Smashville.

Jamie Benn scored for Dallas. Game 3 is Monday night in Dallas.

Sunday?s 6-pack

Something I found this week contained these suggestions for being happy:
? Return everything you borrow.
? Admit it when you a mistake.
? Stop blaming other people.
? Listen more, talk less.
? Realize and accept that life isn?t always fair.
? Don?t sweat the small stuff; its all small stuff.

Quote of the Day
?If you?re going to boo, then stay on that side. That?s how I feel, if you?re a Sixer fan and you?re going to boo then stay on that side.?
Ben Simmons, a little salty after the home folks got restless during Game 1 Saturday

Sunday?s quiz
What team did Hubie Brown coach in the ABA?

Saturday?s quiz
Luke Walton played his college basketball at Arizona.

Friday?s quiz
Chase Field in Arizona has a swimming pool behind the fence in right-center field.

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

14) Get well soon to Mets? broadcaster Ron Darling, who is taking a medical leave from his TV gig. Darling is one of the best broadcasters on TV; he will be missed. Get well soon, sir.

13) Someone at the Westgate SuperBook placed a $3,000 bet on the Clippers to beat Golden State in their first round series at 100-1 odds. Yikes.

12) Nets 111, 76ers 102? Far be it from me to question the Sixers? focus, but Amir Johnson had a cellphone on the bench during the game; at one point, he and Joel Embiid were looking at something on it, while sitting on the bench. Didn?t look like a video of the Brooklyn offense. Or defense.

Apparently Johnson?s daughter was ill and he was checking in on her during the game.

Then there is this: ?Use of a cell phone on the bench is a violation of the NBA Operations Manual. Violation will result in a substantial fine and/or suspension.?

11) Giants 5, Rockies 2? These two teams are only ones in major leagues this season that haven?t scored a run yet in the first inning. Colorado hasn?t scored in first two innings yet this year.

10) Rockies-Giants game lasted so long Friday night (18-inning game ended at 3:50am here in NY) that the seagulls that usually hover over the Giants? ballpark late in games took off about an hour before the game ended.

9) Still don?t understand why some teams bat their pitcher 8th. Tony LaRussa did it, and Joe Maddon has done it, but neither one of them ever did it in a playoff game, and until that happens, then it is just a gimmick.

8) Sacramento Kings hired Luke Walton as their next head coach.

7) Baseball injuries:
? Texas 2B Rougned Odor (knee) heads to the IL.

6) Orioles 9, Red Sox 5? Chris Davis had three hits in five plate appearances in this game. Coming into Saturday, Davis had three hits in his previous 83 PA?s.

5) Tampa Bay?s Tommy Pham has now reached base in 47 consecutive games; the record is 84, held by Ted Williams.

4) Duke played 26 basketball games on ESPN this season. 26 out of 38, and their four games in NCAA?s were all on CBS/Turner.

3) There are 60 international players from 29 countries on NBA playoff rosters; every playoff team has at least two international players, with Utah (6) having the most.

2) Going to be cruddy weather in Georgia Sunday; The Masters moved up tee times in the final round to 7:30am, with CBS coming on the air at 9am. Mets-Braves is the Sunday night ESPN game; doesn?t sound too promising for that game to be played.

1) AAA Rochester Red Wings scored 18 runs Saturday?.and lost, 20-18 in 10 innings.

There is a sign on the scoreboard at Rochester?s stadium, sponsored by baldness.com. Having a sign on a scoreboard can?t be cheap. Must be good money in baldness.
