Hurts, Oklahoma beat Houston 49-31
September 1, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) New Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts passed for three touchdowns and ran for three more, and the fourth-ranked Sooners rolled past Houston 49-31 on Sunday night.

It was Hurts' first game for Oklahoma since he transferred from Alabama. He put on a show as his predecessor, 2018 Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray, watched. He posted 508 total yards, the fifth-most in school history.

Hurts had a nearly flawless first half He completed 13 of 15 passes for 174 yards and rushed 11 times for 128 yards to help the Sooners lead 21-10 at the break.

Overall, the Sooners gained 686 total yards. Hurts finished with 332 yards passing and 176 yards rushing. Charleston Rambo caught three passes for 105 yards and a touchdown and Trey Sermon ran for 91 yards for the Sooners.

Oklahoma's defense was sharp too, constantly pressuring Houston quarterback D'Eriq King and limiting him to 87 yards passing in the first half. King, one of the nation's top quarterbacks last season, finished with just 167 yards passing in former West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen's debut for the Cougars.

THE TAKEAWAY

Houston: The offensive and defensive lines struggled, and that decided the game. The Cougars couldn't keep the Sooners away from King early in the game. He had his moments, but he couldn't produce when Oklahoma established itself in the first half. Oklahoma's offense was only stopped when it self-destructed.

Oklahoma: The offense looked sharp with Hurts, and coach Lincoln Riley showed he can still get results from a very different quarterback than his back-to-back Heisman winners, Baker Mayfield and Murray. The defense was more aggressive and tackled better than in recent years in its first game under new coordinator Alex Grinch. The Sooners forced three-and-outs on Houston's first two possessions to set the tone.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

There's nowhere to go for the Sooners because the teams above them won, but they solidified their position.

UP NEXT

Houston hosts Prairie View A&M on Saturday.

Oklahoma hosts South Dakota on Saturday.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

NFL doings:

? Buffalo released veteran RB LeSean McCoy, who then signed with KC.

? Titans traded WR Taywan Taylor to Cleveland for a draft pick.

? Giants cut QB Kyle Lauletta, a 4th-round draft pick last year.

? Patriots cut backup QB Brian Hoyer.

? Chargers cut backup QB Cardale Jones.

? Vikings traded a 5th-round draft pick for P/K Kaare Vedvik three weeks ago; they cut him Saturday.

**********

Armadillo:Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

13) Boise State 36, Florida State 31:
? Seminoles led this game 31-13 with 3:00 left in first half; they didn?t score again.
? Plays from scrimmage: Boise 108, FSU 62. Boise had 38 first downs.
? Broncos have a good freshman QB in Hank Bachmeier (30-51/407 yards)
? Third down conversions: Boise 10-19, FSU 1-12

12) USC 31, Fresno State 23:
? USC?s QB JT Daniels got hurt; he was replaced by freshman Kedon Slodis, whose QB coach in high school was NFL Hall of Famer Kurt Warner.
? How was Jeff Tedford fired by Cal? Fresno has only 3 starters back on offense but they went toe-to-toe with USC here. Tedford is an excellent coach (Aaron Rodgers? college coach).
? Fresno had the ball in the red zone in the last 2:00, but threw an end zone pick.
? Clay Helton went for it on 4th-and-1 near midfield with 2:20 left up 8 points; he didn?t make but was bailed out by his defense.

11) North Carolina 24, South Carolina 20? Mack Brown?s return to the sidelines was a success, though not before a mind-numbing mistake when they took a knee instead of punting in the last 0:20, giving the Gamecocks the ball on the UNC 47.

Tar Heels trailed this game 20-9 after the third quarter, but rallied with 98-95 yard TD drives for the win. Brown was out of coaching for five years; I enjoyed his TV work, but he seems happier to be back coaching.

10) Auburn 27, Oregon 21:
? Auburn started a freshman QB in its opener for first time since 1946.
? Ducks led 14-6 at half, 21-13 after third quarter, but were scoreless in 4th quarter.
? Auburn outrushed Oregon 206-90.

9) Houston Texans were very busy Saturday:
? Houston acquired LT Laremy Tunsil, WR Kenny Stills from Miami for two 1st round picks and a 2nd round pick.
? Texans traded DE Jadeveon Clowney to Seattle, dumping his $16M salary.
? Houston also acquired RB Carlos Hyde from the Chiefs, and DB Keion Crosson from New England in separate deals.

Houston?s Bill O?Brien is getting ripped on social media for these moves, but we?ll see how this all works out. Texans gave up 66 sacks LY, the most for a playoff team since 1999, so acquiring Tunsil seems like a good idea, even if they overpaid some.

Dolphins, on the other hand, seem to have given up on this season before Labor Day; giving away your LT and your best WR is similar to what the Raiders did LY when they traded Kahlil Mack to Chicago and Amari Cooper to Dallas for draft picks.

8) Best wishes to New Mexico coach Bob Davie, who was hospitalized after the Lobos? 39-31 win over Sam Houston State with chest pains. No word on how serious it is.

7) Nebraska 35, South Alabama 21? Cornhuskers scored two TD?s in the third quarter before they ran an offensive play; a pick-6 and a punt return TD. Nebraska ran ball for only 98 yards, which is alarming.

Someone at Caesars Palace wagered $2,000 on Nebraska?s money line; he had to sweat a decent amount before he collected his $12.50 winnings. Not even enough to buy a decent lunch.

6) I-A teams that lost to I-AA opponents:
? Central Arkansas 35, Western Kentucky 28 (WKU led 28-14 after 3rd quarter)

Close calls/red flags:
? Iowa State 29, Northern Iowa 26 OT
? Kansas 24, Indiana State 17
? UConn 24, Wagner 21
? Minnesota 28, South Dakota State 21
? UAB 24, Alabama State 19
? Arkansas 20, Portland State 13
? UTEP 36, Houston Baptist 34
? Old Dominion 24, Norfolk State 21
? West Virginia 20, James Madison 13
? San Diego State 6, Weber State 0

5) Michigan State 28, Tulsa 7? Total yardage in this game was 303-80, MSU.

In college football, sacks count as rushing yardage; in this game, Tulsa had 25 rushes for minus-73 yards; they were 16-27/153 passing. Spartans? defense scored nine points, as Tulsa botched two shotgun snaps that padded the ridiculously bad rushing numbers.

4) Upsets:
? Georgia State (+26.5) 38, Tennessee 30? Panthers were 2-10 LY, 1-7 in Sun Belt. Tennessee has its fourth offensive coordinator in four years. Learning takes time.
? Wyoming (+18) 37, Missouri 31
? Nevada (+11) 34, Purdue 31? Kid that made the game-winning 56-yard FG was put on scholarship after the game, meaning he actually got paid for making that kick.
? North Carolina (+10) 24, South Carolina 20
? Boston College (+4.5) 35, Virginia Tech 28

3) Wake Forest 38, Utah State 35? Both teams passed for 400+ yards; Wake converted 13-24 third down plays. State had 8 penalties for 84 yards; Deacons one for 15 yards.

2) Memphis 15, Ole Miss 10? Yardage was 364-173 Memphis; they led 13-0 at halftime, then held on for dear life.

1) A big problem with the epidemic of quarterback transfers is that it leaves more teams very thin under center. A starter gets hurt or struggles, and it is a disaster.

UCLA?s quarterback is obviously struggling, but the Bruins don?t have anyone with experience to step in for him? they?ve got all young backup QB?s, two freshmen and a sophomore.

Chip Kelly has some work to do; the kid was 8-26 passing and lost two fumbles in the red zone, not exactly a stellar performance in a 24-14 loss.

Louisville went 2-10 LY after going 57-21 the previous six years, so they changed coaches; Cardinals have 10 starters back on defense, a junior QB (9 starts), an OL with 57 starts- they covered once in last five tries as a home underdog. Last three years, Louisville is 3-11 ATS outside the ACC. Notre Dame has a junior QB (10 starts), an OL with 60 starts. Irish is 5-3-1 ATS in last nine games as a road favorite. Louisville (+3) won last meeting 31-28, five years ago.

*Notre Dame at Louisville*
Brian Edwards

*Venue/Location: Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, KY
Time/TV: Monday, Sept. 2, 8:00 p.m. ET, ESPN
Line: Notre Dame -18, Total 54.5
Last Meeting: 2014, Louisville (+2.5) 31 at Notre Dame 28*

With Week 1 of the NFL?s season beginning on Thursday, college football is the Monday Night Football offering from ESPN to conclude Week 1. Louisville and its new head coach Scott Satterfield will host Notre Dame at Cardinal Stadium.

As of Sunday night, most books had the Fighting Irish installed as an 18-point road favorite with a total of 54 or 54.5 points. The Cardinals were +700 or +750 on the money line at most spots.

For first half wagers, Notre Dame is a 10-point favorite at most books, but there?s a -115 price attached to it. There are a few betting shops like the Westgate SuperBook and Stations who have the Irish -10.5 in the game?s first 30 minutes. The total is 28 points, while U of L is +500 on the money line.

Notre Dame finished 2018 with a 12-1 straight-up record and a 6-6-1 against-the-spread mark. Brian Kelly?s team went undefeated in 12 regular-season games, beating four ranked foes in 14th-ranked Michigan (24-17), seventh-ranked Stanford (38-17), 24th-ranked Va. Tech (45-23) and 12th-ranked Syracuse (36-3). Notre Dame?s season ended at Jerry World in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff, as Clemson trounced the Irish 30-3 as a 12.5-point ?chalk.? The Tigers enjoyed a 538-248 advantage in total offense, with Trevor Lawrence throwing for 327 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Notre Dame QB Ian Book completed only 17-of-34 passes for 160 yards and one interception.

Kelly?s bunch went 2-1-1 ATS as a road favorite in 2018. During his first nine seasons in South Bend, Notre Dame has compiled a 10-13-1 ATS as a road favorite. The Irish posted a 2-5-1 spread record in eight games as a double-digit favorite.

Notre Dame returns seven starters on offense and six on defense. Book is back for his junior campaign. He took over for Brandon Wimbush, who has since transferred to UCF, as the starting signal caller in Week 5 vs. Stanford.

Book went 8-1 in nine starts, connecting on 68.2 percent of his passes for 2,628 yards with a 19/7 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He had 280 rushing yards and four TDs.

The Irish lost leading rusher Dexter Williams, who had 995 rushing yards, 12 TDs and a 6.3 yards-per-carry average in ?18. He also had 16 receptions for 133 yards and one TD. The depth chart Kelly released this week lists sophomore Jafar Armstrong or junior Tony Jones as the starting RB.

Jones ran for 392 yards and three TDs with a 4.7 YPC average last year, while Armstrong had 383 rushing yards, seven TDs and a 5.3 YPC average. Armstrong had 14 catches for 159 yards, and Jones made six receptions for 157 yards and one TD.

Notre Dame?s offense averaged 31.4 points per game in ?18, while its defense gave up only 18.2 PPG.

Notre Dame will face U of L without its starting tight end Cole Kmet (broken collarbone, out indefinitely), WR Kevin Austin (indefinite suspension) and WR Michael Young. Kmet started seven games last year, hauling in 15 receptions for 162 yards.

Austin played in 11 of 13 games as a freshman last season, making five catches for 90 yards. Young, a junior, has played in 26 career games. He had seven grabs for 138 yards and one TD in 2018.

Louisville won at least eight games in the first four seasons of Bobby Petrino?s second head-coaching stint at the school. However, the 2018 team finished the year on a nine-game losing streak and U of L decided to fire Petrino.

I?m a big fan of the new hire in former Appalachian State head coach Scott Satterfield, who went 47-16 from 2014-18 when the school moved from FCS up to FBS and into the Sun Belt Conference. Satterfield led the Mountaineers to a 34-6 record against Sun Belt opponents. He nearly pulled upsets in season-opening overtime losses at Tennessee (2016) and at Penn State (last year).

Satterfield led Appalachian State to four straight bowl appearances, going 3-0 in those games. (The Mountaineers beat Middle Tennessee 45-13 at last year?s New Orleans Bowl after Satterfield had left for U of L.). His teams won at least nine games in each of his last four seasons, finishing 10-3 in ?16 and 11-2 in both ?15 and ?18.

Satterfield inherits a squad that finished 2-10 SU and an atrocious 1-11 ATS last season. U of L brings back six starters on offense and 10 on defense. Whether 10 defensive starters returning is a good thing or not is debatable, because that unit allowed 44.1 PPG in ?18.

Junior Jawon Pass, a former four-star recruit, has won the starting QB job. Pass started nine games last season, completing 54.0 percent of his passes for 1,960 with an abysmal 8/12 TD-INT ratio. He had a pair of rushing scores.

U of L bring back four of its top-five pass catchers. Dez Fitzpatrick is the best of the bunch. He had 699 receiving yards in seven starts as a freshman in ?17. Fitzpatrick had 31 receptions for 422 yards and three TDs last year.

Louisville is expected to be without four players vs. the Irish. Starting TE Jordan Davis is out for the first two games of the year due to an academic issue. He has started five games and has 111 receiving yards in the past two seasons. Also, junior safety TreSean Smith is serving an indefinite suspension. Smith has 70 career tackles in his first two seasons with the Cardinals.

Junior LB P.J. Blue is out for the season with a torn ACL. Blue recorded 39 tackles and two tackles for loss in 2018.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

-- Boston College picked up a 35-28 victory at home against Virginia Tech as four-point underdogs. The key was a 21-point second quarter, as the Eagles beat the Hokies for the second consecutive season. ... Clemson registered a 52-14 victory over Georgia Tech in Death Valley. With 6:11 to go, the Tigers hit a 51-yard field goal to increase their lead from 49-14, and they covered as a result. ... Florida State had their game against Boise State moved from TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville to their home stadium in Tallahassee due to the approaching Hurricane Dorian. Syracuse hit the road for Liberty to open the season, winning 24-0 to cover a 19 1/2-point number.

*BIG TEN*
-- Wisconsin opened on the road Friday night at South Florida, and the heat and humidity of Florida was no obstacle for the Badgers. They ran roughshod over the Bulls to win 49-0 as the 'under' (58) cashed. ... Minnesota struggled with FCS South Dakota State on Thursday, trailing 21-20 after three quarters. The Gophers picked up a touchdown and two-point conversion to avoid the upset. ... Michigan State fired out to a 25-0 lead in Friday's home opener against Tulsa, and it looked like the rout was on. However, there were a total of just three points between the two teams, as the 'under' (47.5) easily connected. ... Ohio State also fired out of the box in the first quarter against Florida Atlantic, taking a 28-0 lead midway through the first 15 minutes. The Owls settled down and outscored the Buckeyes 21-17 in the final three quarters, earning the cover. ... Rutgers fell behind by a 21-7 score after one quarter, but they rattled off 31 points in the second quarter, and the Scarlet Knights outscored Massachusetts by a 41-0 count to end the game.

*BIG 12*
-- Oklahoma received an impressive performance from QB Jalen Hurts in his team debut, as the Sooners exacted a little revenge against Houston on Sunday night, winning 49-31. If you were holding an 'under' (80) ticket, you were probably none too pleased with how this one ended. ... West Virginia won 20-13 over FCS James Madison, and that might raise some eyebrows. However, the Mountaineers were only favored by seven, so this was a push. The Dukes of JMU are a solid FCS club, as they entered ranked No. 2 in the FCS. ... Iowa State also avoided the upset bug against FCS Northern Iowa, needing triple-overtime to push aside the Panthers by a 29-26 count. It was 13-13 after regulation, but the three-overtime run ended up pushing this total over (41.5). ... Kansas kicked off the Les Miles era with a narrow 24-17 win against FCS Indiana State, nearly losing to a lower-division team for the second straight season after Nicholls got 'em in 2018. Speaking of Nicholls, they fell 49-14 against Kansas State, as they avoided the upset bid from a lesser team.

*CONFERENCE USA*
-- The conference didn't have the best of weeks, going 8-6 SU and 5-9 ATS. Texas-San Antonio earned the 35-7 win against FCS Incarnate Word to easily cover a 9 1/2-point number. ... Western Kentucky wasn't as fortunate, losing in front of the home faithful against FCS Central Arkansas, a team outside of the Top 25 in the FCS preseason poll. ... Alabama-Birmingham was able to avoid a major upset at home against FCS Alabama State. The Blazers were favored by 40, but only squeaked out a 24-19 win. ... Florida International suffered a lopsided loss at Tulane, and this was a bad beat as far as the total is concerned. ...Texas-El Paso certainly didn't dominate, but they topped FCS Houston Baptist to move to 1-0 SU for the first time since Sept. 3, 2016. It was their first win in front of the home fans since Nov. 26, 2016, too.

*MID-AMERICAN (MAC)*
-- Bowling Green roughed up FCS Morgan state by a 46-3 score at Doyt Perry Stadium as the 'under' (50.5) just came in. ... Akron got off to an extremely sluggish start, getting buried at Illinois by a 42-3 count. The Zips allowed 14 points in each of the first three quarters before a scoreless fourth for both sides. ... Eastern Michigan hit the beach on Saturday, scratching out a 30-23 win at Coastal Carolina. ... Ball State hung on for a cover as 18-point underdogs against Indiana, falling 34-24 in Muncie.

*MOUNTAIN WEST*
-- San Jose State posted a 35-18 win against FCS Northern Colorado, narrowly missing a cover as 17 1/2-point favorites. ... Utah State was able to pick up a cover as five-point 'dogs at Wake Forest, falling 38-35 in the Triad. ... Nevada stunned Purdue in Reno, outscoring the Boilermakers by a 17-0 count in the fourth quarter. The Wolfpack scored 10 points in the final :52, as the total cashed, as well as making winners of moneyline bettors in a crazy finish. ... Hawaii kicked off the season in Week 0 with a 45-38 shootout victory against Arizona as the over (70) easily cashed.

*PAC-12*
-- USC might have picked up the 31-23 win against Fresno State of the MWC, but the Trojans ended up losing QB JT Daniels for the season due to a knee injury. The Bulldogs outscored the Trojans 10-0 in the fourth quarter to earn the road cover. ... UCLA opened with a 24-14 road loss against Cincinnati as the Bearcats covered the 2 1/2-point number as the 'under' (55.5) connected. ... Oregon looked to have their neutral-site game against Auburn in the bag at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Tex. ... Utah opened the season with an impressive 30-12 road win against Brigham Young in the Holy War, easily covering a five-point number. ... Washington State rubbed out New Mexico State by a 58-7 count to cover 33 points, but just missed the over (65.5).

*SOUTHEASTERN (SEC)*
-- Mississippi struggled offensively in their trip to the Liberty Bowl, falling 15-10 to Memphis. The Tigers fired out to a 13-0 lead and ended up hanging on, getting a safety with 2:44 to go to change a push at most shops into a cover. ... Alabama was a little sluggish out of the gate, leading just 14-3 against Duke at halftime after a scoreless first quarter. However, the Crimson Tide roughed up the Blue Devils by a 28-0 count in the second half to run away with a 42-3 win and cover the 33 1/2-point spread. ... The big upset of the weekend was Georgia State winning at Tennessee as 24 1/2-point underdogs, cashing a huge check and taking a win back to Atlanta. ... South Carolina blew a 20-9 lead heading into the fourth quarter, as North Carolina stormed back 15-0 at Bank of America Stadium to cause Mack Brown to bust a move after the win.

*SUN BELT*
-- Outside of Georgia State's win, there wasn't a lot to crow about for Sun Belt teams. As mentioned, Coastal Carolina lost at home to EMU, and Arkansas State was upended by a 37-30 count against SMU. ... Texas State played the entire 60 minutes, much to the dismay of Texas A&M side bettors. The Aggies made it 41-0 with 4:57 to go, but the Bobcats hit a 27-yard pass play for score to cause a push at most shops.

*Bad Beats*
-- Toledo scored a touchdown with 62 seconds remaining at Kentucky, cutting the Wildcats' lead to 38-24. Kentucky ended up still covering, but the late score caused the total to flip.

-- If you were holding an 'over' ticket in FIU-Tulane, you weren't a happy camper. At the end of three quarters there were 56 points on the board with a total of 58.5. That's exactly how it ended, too, after a scoreless fourth quarter.

-- Stanford led 10-7 over Northwestern, but the Cardinal had a sack, fumble and recovery for touchdown with just 20 seconds left to flip a sure Wildcats cover in to a winning ticket for Cardinal side bettors.

4th Quarter Covers - Week 1
September 2, 2019
By Joe Nelson

Glancing at the scoreboard won?t tell you the whole story in most games. Here are some of the games that went down to the wire relative to the spread in the fourth quarter last week in the first big college football weekend. Each week there are several teams that cover despite not necessarily deserving it, as well as other teams that played much better than the final score shows.

Cincinnati (-2?) 24, UCLA 14: The Bearcats opened as a 4-point favorite and led by only three through three quarters, struggling to pull away from the Bruins with several missed scoring opportunities. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Cincinnati struck for a 21-yard touchdown pass to lead by 10 and then watched UCLA have turnovers on its next two possessions.

Clemson (-36?) 52, Georgia Tech 14: The Tigers did not have trouble in this game, but a 35-0 edge wasn?t enough to cover the spread. These teams exchanged touchdowns late in the third quarter and early in the fourth as the 35-point margin held on a spread that was commonly just past that number. With some reserves in the game, Clemson added a 51-yard field goal with six minutes remaining for the top ranked Tigers to cover.

Texas A&M (-34) 41, Texas State 7: The Aggies scored twice late in the second quarter to take a commanding 28-0 lead into halftime, but only added three points in the third quarter. Early in the fourth, Texas A&M pushed past the spread completing a 94-yard touchdown drive and then forced two Texas State punts. The Aggies added another three points to lead 41-0, but Texas State would avoided the shutout, converting several 3rd downs on its way to the end zone in the final minute to spoil the cover for many on a spread that hovered right around 34, with winners and losers on both sides with 33? and 34? also common.

Arizona State (-24) 30, Kent State 7: The Sun Devils led 27-0 at halftime and wound up holding Kent State to only 200 total yards in the game. Kent State finally put a scoring drive together late in the game, finding the end zone on a 3rd-and-6 play into the fourth quarter to climb within the underdog spread. Arizona State was poised to answer, but the offense stalled near the 20-yard-line and settled for a field goal halfway through the fourth quarter to only lead by 23. That would be the final with three uneventful possessions to finish out the contest.

Michigan State (-23?) 28, Tulsa 7: Everything went right for Michigan State in the second quarter with three turnovers, a safety, and a defensive touchdown to take a 25-0 lead but Tulsa was able to find the end zone just before halftime to trail by only 18. After exchanging punts, a pass interference call gave the Spartans a new set of downs in Tulsa territory, but Michigan State had a touchdown called back for holding and had to settle for a field goal to push the margin to 21 points. There was only one first down on either side the rest of the game with a scoreless fourth quarter preserving the underdog cover.

Colorado (-11?) 52, Colorado State 31: The Rams scored early in the fourth quarter to get to within seven, eyeing a comeback upset in this rivalry game. Looking for a stop the defense pushed Colorado back with a holding call, but Steven Montez hit several quick strikes to move the Buffaloes into the end zone and back past the favorite spread at 45-31. With about four minutes to go, Colorado State fumbled deep in its own territory and Colorado ran it back for a score to put the game away with a 21-point win despite the Rams having more than 500 yards.

Nevada (+11) 34, Purdue 31: The Boilermakers appeared to be in complete control with a 31-14 edge late in the third quarter. Nevada managed a field goal to trim the deficit to 14, but despite battling turnovers Purdue still led by 14 halfway through the fourth quarter before Nevada scored with fewer than seven minutes remaining. Purdue picked up a few first downs but had to punt from midfield and Nevada put together an 87-yard scoring drive to tie the game in the final minute. Elijah Sindelar was intercepted on second down and Nevada ran down the clock and despite getting pushed back with a penalty. The Wolf Pack would win on a 56-yard field goal from walk-on kicker Brandon Talton, while getting a 5-0 turnover edge in the game for the upset.

Ohio State (-27?) 45, Florida Atlantic 21: Those laying the points with Ohio State had to feel good with a 28-0 lead with still nearly seven minutes to go in the first quarter. The Owls managed two field goals in the middle quarters, but Ohio State still took a 29-point lead into the final frame. In the fourth quarter, Florida Atlantic would put together two long touchdown drives to eventually trim the deficit to just 21 points. Ohio State reached the Florida Atlantic 22-yard line with a new set of downs in the final minutes, but went backwards with a holding call and had to settle for a field goal even with Justin Fields and the first team offense still in the game. Ohio State would get a late interception to get the ball back but simply ran out the clock with backups on the final possession as the Owls snagged an improbable underdog cover.

Kentucky (-9) 38, Toledo 24:
This contest smelled like a potential upset spot and an opening line near two touchdowns fell to below double-digits by kickoff. A competitive game was in store with Kentucky leading 24-17 into the fourth quarter before completing a 92-yard touchdown drive finished off with a 40-yard run from Kavosiey Smoke. An interception two plays later from Toledo backup quarterback Carter Bradley doomed the Rockets and a short-field score put the Wildcats up by 21 with just over five minutes to go. Kentucky would fumble to give the ball back to Toledo late in the game and the Rockets added a touchdown with about a minute remaining, but didn?t quite reach the underdog spread. However, for most that late touchdown pushed the total just ?over?.

Mississippi State (-18?) 38, UL-Lafayette 28: In New Orleans, the heavily favored Bulldogs moved the ball with ease on the ground but didn?t build a big lead with two first half fumbles including a punt return miscue that led to a huge field position swing, while also missing a short field goal. Despite keeping the Ragin? Cajuns in the game, Mississippi State managed to lead by 21 early in the fourth quarter, even with the common spread that dipped before kickoff with the late announcement of suspensions for the Bulldogs. Louisiana-Lafayette would score two short-field touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make the yardage and scoring for the game much more respectable in a sloppy opening contest on both sides.

Memphis (-3?) 15, Mississippi 10: This spread on this game dropped from -6? down to just -3? by kickoff and a tight finish was in order even after a 13-0 lead at halftime for Memphis with a missed PAT potentially looming large. Ole Miss had minimal yardage in the game but climbed to within three early in the fourth quarter, getting a touchdown after Memphis came up short going for it on 4th-and-1 just across midfield. Ultimately the difference on the scoreboard for many wound up being a safety on a sack with the Rebels pinned back to the two-yard-line, putting the margin from three to five. That was where the final ended up with Memphis being able to take a knee in the final seconds inside the Ole Miss 20-yard-line.

Eastern Michigan (-4) 30, Coastal Carolina 23: The spread on this game fell from -6 to just -4 and those numbers were in play late in the game. Coastal Carolina led at halftime but Eastern Michigan took control from there and led 30-20 with about five minutes remaining. The Chanticleers were on the doorstep with 1st-and-goal but didn?t pick up yardage and wound up settling for a 26-yard field goal that was inexplicably missed. The defense forced a quick 3-and-out to get the ball back but again settled for a field goal instead of a spread-spoiling touchdown in the final minute. The Chanticleers actually got the on-side kick but wound up throwing an interception on 1st down.

North Carolina (+11?) 24, South Carolina 20:
This spread climbed sharply during the week with an opener of 7? skyrocketing to close at 11?. South Carolina would lead by 11 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Tar Heels would put together two touchdown drives of more than 90 yards in the fourth quarter for a stunning finish. South Carolina would have four more possessions in the game but Jake Bentley was intercepted twice as the Tar Heels hung on to win narrowly despite massive production edges for the game.

Alabama (-33?) 42, Duke 3: Alabama didn?t score in the first quarter and had a modest 14-3 lead at halftime before scoring three touchdowns in the span of only about seven minutes late in the third quarter to pull away. With a 35-3 edge, the Tide were just short of the common spreads on the game that reached as high as 34?. Duke had three second half turnovers but Alabama missed a field goal that could have put the margin at 35. Finally Tide backers got the breakthrough they needed as Jerome Ford ran for a 37-yard touchdown to put the favorite in position to cover for the first time with fewer than five minutes remaining. The defense intercepted Quentin Harris for a touchback in the final minute as Duke couldn?t get back within the number.

Stanford (-6?) 17, Northwestern 7: Stanford led 10-0 at halftime, but would lose quarterback K.J. Costello. Northwestern appeared poised to score to start the second half but wound up fumbling at the Stanford 5-yard-line. The Cardinal would give the ball back a few plays later but ultimately no points were added as Northwestern missed a field goal. Later in the third, the roles reversed with a Northwestern interception and then Stanford missing a 29-yard kick. The Wildcats would convert a 4th down in the red zone and eventually added a touchdown to trail 10-7 and then got the ball back after a Stanford fumble. Punts followed and on a late desperation possession a strip sack led to a Stanford touchdown as the Cardinal escaped with the win and cover.

Syracuse (-19?) 24, Liberty 0:
The Liberty defense did its job allowing just 17 points through three quarters vs. Syracuse and two of those drives were very short drives off good field position. The Flames wound up with four turnovers on offense plus a missed field goal. Early in the fourth the quarter, the Orange put together its best offensive drive of the game to take a 24-0 edge and the Flames botched two late opportunities to add points, failing going for it on 4th down once and then later fumbling near the red zone.

Boise State (+7) 36, Florida State 31: Boise State wound up playing a true road game to start the season and fell behind 24-6 early in the second quarter. By halftime, the Broncos were able to get within 12 and in the second half the defense stepped up while freshman Hank Bachmeier made a name for himself. The second half started with five straight punts and then an exchange of fumbles before the Broncos got back within the spread late in the third quarter, down by five on a spread that was as low as -3? in Jacksonville but climbed quickly to -6? with the move to Tallahassee. Early in the fourth, the Broncos again delivered an efficient touchdown drive to take the lead and the FSU offense remained quiet. Boise State would settle for a short field goal halfway through the fourth quarter to lead by six but then held Florida State to negative yards on the next drive and then in a final desperation possession, the Seminoles went backwards with a holding penalty and ultimately fell short faced with a 4th-and-long.

SMU (+1) 37, Arkansas State 30: This contest featured some big momentum swings as an early Arkansas State lead disappeared by halftime and then back-to-back touchdowns put the Red Wolves up by seven halfway through the third quarter. A 98-yard kickoff return touchdown followed to shift the momentum back to the Mustangs who would add two more touchdowns to lead by 14 in the fourth quarter. Arkansas State scored with six minutes to go to get back within one score and overtime looked possible with a new set of downs on the SMU 25-yard-line in the final seconds. Ultimately a fourth-down sack ended the game for a narrow SMU win.

Iowa (-25?) 38, Miami, OH 14: Iowa led only 10-7 at halftime, but took control in the third quarter with a pair of touchdowns to lead by 17 on a spread that climbed steadily from -21? to -25?. Led by Brett Gabbert, Miami was able to get what appeared to be a spread-saving touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the margin at only 10 points. Iowa wound go for the touchdown on 4th down near the end zone and succeed to lead by 17 with about six minutes left. On its next offensive snap, Miami threw an interception and a few plays later Iowa was back in the end zone and suddenly up by 24 to earn the favorite cover for most though shortly before kickoff the spread climbed further for the closing line of 25? that calls Miami a winner.

Georgia (-22?) 30, Vanderbilt 6: Georgia commanded a lot of attention as a heavy road favorite in this SEC opener but a pair of field goals before halftime kept the Commodores in play. The Bulldogs added only three points in the entire third quarter to lead by just 18 and then fumbled in Vanderbilt territory early in the fourth quarter. The Commodores didn?t take advantage but managed to stay in position to cover by holding Georgia to another field goal. Near midfield, Riley Neal fumbled to thwart a potential scoring chance for Vanderbilt and Georgia again kicked for three, this time to move pas the favorite spread with just over two minutes remaining. With Deuce Wallace at quarterback, Vanderbilt was a threat to score late but from the Georgia 18-yard line four consecutive incomplete passes ended that chance.

Auburn (-4) 27, Oregon 21: In the showcase game Saturday night, the first half featured missed field goals and turnovers on both sides as Oregon led 14-6. The Ducks used a strong punt return for good field position to set-up a touchdown drive to lead 21-6 early in the third quarter. Auburn would control the game from there with the Ducks punting three straight times while Auburn scored two touchdowns, to close to within one point down 21-20. Oregon wound up just across midfield with over five minutes remaining before getting a big scare with Justin Herbert injured. He had to sit out on a critical 4th-and-short play that was stuffed by Auburn. The Tigers went 3-and-out from there but the defense held to get the ball back with just over two minutes to go in good field position. Bo Nix scrambled to narrowly convert a 4th down and Auburn reached field goal range in the final seconds. Opting to take one shot down the field Nix hit Seth Williams just outside the end zone and he gathered the ball and dove in for the go-ahead score on both the scoreboard and the pointspread. Oregon did get a favorable Hail Mary position from past midfield but Herbert threw over the end zone for stunning collapse for the Ducks.

USC (-14) 31, Fresno State 23: The Bulldogs hung right with the Trojans on the scoreboard and the box score, trailing by just four after a field goal halfway through the third quarter. Their kickoff was returned 100 yards for a touchdown however and USC would add another quick touchdown later in the third quarter to suddenly lead by 18. While USC backup quarterback Kedon Slovis started hot, he threw a late third quarter interception taking a deep shot and Fresno State was able to go 80 yards for a field goal to trim the margin to 15 points, not quite enough on a spread that climbed substantially from the opening price. Fresno State?s defense held again and on the next drive the Bulldogs were within one score after a touchdown with about seven minutes to go. The overtime threat lingered after Fresno State converted a 4th down near midfield, but on the next play Jorge Reyna was intercepted in the end zone as USC held on.

Oklahoma (-22) 49, Houston 31: Jalen Hurts certainly had a great Oklahoma debut and could very well continue the Heisman run for Sooners quarterbacks if he keeps up the pace. Oklahoma led by 25 through three quarters but Houston would get its offense going in the fourth quarter, ultimately getting nearly half of its game production in the final frame with two touchdowns bringing the margin briefly to only 11 points. Oklahoma ended any thoughts of a miracle comeback with a short-field score after Houston wasn?t able to bring in the on-side kick but the final 18-point margin kept the underdog cover in place.

Notre Dame looks to move on from CFP loss
September 2, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) A discouraging end to an otherwise great 2018 season made for a long offseason for Notre Dame.

The No. 9 Fighting Irish will try to start another national championship run Monday night against rebuilding Louisville. Last year's quest ended with a 30-3 blowout loss against eventual champion Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinal.

''We've been waiting since that Cotton Bowl ended,'' Notre Dame wide receiver Chris Finke said. ''We've been itching to get back on the field. It's been a long time preparing in the weight room and on the practice field.

''Starting strong is always a good feeling. That's the goal and that's the focus.''

Notre Dame (12-1 in 2018) lost the only other meeting with Louisville, 31-28 in 2014.

The Irish returns senior quarterback Ian Book, (2,628 yards passing, 19 touchdowns) to an offense it hopes can be more explosive this season. Their defense lost All-America cornerback Julian Love and lots of production in the middle of the front seven, but features pass rusher Julian Okwara, a second-team preseason All-American, and stellar safeties Jalen Elliott and Alohi Gilman.

Strong as the Irish appear, coach Brian Kelly said last week the opener will go a long way toward showing what kind of edge they bring into the season.

''I think the mindset of this group kind of comes together after a first game,'' he said. ''I'm not sure what that is right now. ... That kind of unfolds when the group plays.''

Notre Dame's sorting-out process poses a huge challenge for Louisville and first-year coach Scott Satterfield as it tries to climb back from a 2-10 collapse.

Satterfield replaces Bobby Petrino, who was fired last November after a 2-8 start. He makes the jump from a successful tenure at Appalachian State, where he went 51-24 in six seasons with the Mountaineers.

Satterfield grasped the magnitude of his new task even before glancing at a schedule that also features Clemson. His immediate focus has been assembling the pieces he hopes will make the Cardinals competitive against college football's most storied program - and beyond.

''There's a short period of time between then, and I knew it then, and Notre Dame,'' Satterfield recalled about his December introduction as coach. ''It's not a very long time to get ready for another day and this season and we have one the toughest schedules in the country.

''I know it's a big deal. We're anxious to get out and see where we're at and see kind of where we need to go from here.''

Other things to watch as No. 9 Notre Dame visits Louisville on Labor Day:

BOOK MARKS

Book is coming off a season in which he completed 68.2% of his throws and compiled a 154 passer rating, fifth best in program history. He returns as the third-most accurate passer from 2018, behind Southern Mississippi's Jack Abraham (73.1%) and Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa (69%), and with a point to make. ''I still feel like I have a chip on my shoulder, that I have to prove myself every day, and that won't change,'' he said.

DEFENSIVE MAKEOVER

After allowing 44.1 points and 483.4 yards per game last season, the Cardinals are switching to a 3-4 scheme implemented by Bryan Brown, their third defensive coordinator in as many seasons. Players acknowledged being energized under Brown, who has shaken things up by moving guys to different positions and experimenting with different looks.

STEPPING UP

Notre Dame's kicking game will feature two new faces with freshman punter Jay Bramblett and junior placekicker Jonathan Doerer. Both take over for record-setters in Tyler Newsome and career scoring leader Justin Yoon, respectively. Doerer played in place of an injured Yoon last season against Navy, making 5 of 6 conversions and his first career field goal from 30 yards.

ANOTHER SHOT

Junior quarterback Jawon Pass will start his second consecutive opener for Louisville after bouncing in and out of the lineup last season. Satterfield and offensive coordinator Dwayne Ledford have simplified the offense for Pass, who completed 54% of his attempts for 1,960 yards, eight TDs and 12 interceptions.

Notre Dame vs. Louisville score, takeaways: No. 9 Irish shake slow start to pull away for win over Cardinals

The Irish settled in to take the season-opening victory over the fumble-prone Cards

It certainly didn't go as easily as many expected it would, but in the end, No. 9 Notre Dame was able to dispose of Louisville rather comfortably in its season-opener, winning 35-17 on Monday night in Cardinal Stadium.

Louisville, in its first game under new coach Scott Satterfield, came out hot and playing well. The Cardinals took a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter, but wouldn't hold it for long. Notre Dame would score four minutes later to tie it at the end of the first, and then the Irish's talent advantage slowly won out over the final 45 minutes of play by outscoring the Cardinals 21-3.

The Irish offense was led by Tony Jones Jr., who rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Chase Claypool caught five passes for 94 yards. QB Ian Book got off to a slow start but finished with a nice line, passing for 193 yards, rushing for 81 and finishing with two total touchdowns.

Louisville's Jawon Pass finished with 134 yards passing, 67 yards rushing and two total touchdowns.

Here are the three main takeaways from this one.

1. Notre Dame looks like it will be able to run the football. Book had a difficult time finding a rhythm in this game early, and the truth is, he never truly found it. He finished with 193 yards passing after completing only 14 of his 23 pass attempts. Fortunately for the Irish, they didn't need to move the ball through the air in this one.

Notre Dame finished with 232 yards rushing on 42 attempts for an average of 5.5 yards per carry. If you take out sack yardage, that average jumps to 6.3 yards per carry. Jones and his 112 yards led the way, and Book finished with 81, but Jahmir Smith had two touchdowns rushing as well. Notre Dame also had nine carries of at least 10 yards, with two over 30. All of which bodes well for the Irish moving forward, particularly against an offensive line that should be good. That line did struggle a bit, however, but that's not atypical for an opening game.

2. But will the Irish be able to stop the run? As well as the Irish were able to run the ball, they didn't do a great job of stopping it. Louisville finished with 249 yards rushing, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Louisville's average spikes to 6.4 yards per carry when removing sack yardage, and the Irish defense was bleeding big plays in the run game as well.

If you think Notre Dame's nine runs of 10+ yards on 42 carries (21.4 percent) was a lot, Louisville had 12 such runs on 47 attempts (25.5 percent). It didn't hurt Notre Dame tonight, and odds are it won't hurt in next week's home opener against New Mexico, but the Irish head to Athens in two weeks. If the run defense isn't sorted out by then, it could be a very long day against the Bulldogs.

3. Even in the loss, Louisville looks like a much better team in 2019. To be blunt, Louisville quit on Bobby Petrino over the second half of last season because it was apparent that he'd already quit on them. That led to a lot of lopsided losses to finish the year and a 2-10 record. Well, there's a new coaching staff in town, and the change was evident right from the start.

I don't know how many more games this team is going to win under Satterfield in 2019, but there was an energy and a determination in the Cardinals on Monday night that was nowhere to be found last year. In the end, they didn't have enough to compete with the Irish, but Notre Dame's a top 10 team, and not many can. In an ACC that's pretty open after Clemson, however, this is a team that could suddenly be more dangerous than anybody anticipated.

They'll have to clean things up a bit, though. The Cardinals turned the ball over three times on Monday night, and that doesn't include the other two fumbles they were able to get back on top of. It's hard to beat anybody when you're dropping the ball five times in a game, let alone a top 10 team. Still, if this had happened last year, it would have been a result of a team that didn't care. That wasn't the case on Monday.

Clemson's opening odds tick up early for College Football Week 2 clash vs Texas A&M

Clemson's opening odds tick up early for College Football Week 2 clash vs Texas A&M
Clemson running back Travis Etienne had 205 yards and three TDs in a Week 1 blowout of Georgia Tech.

The No. 1 Tigers opened as 18-point favorites at home in Week 2 vs. No. 11 Texas A&M.

Week 1 isn?t quite a wrap yet in college football, but it?s time to set our sights on a Week 2 with several noteworthy matchups. We check in on the opening odds and early action for four games, with insights from Matt Chaprales, head of content for New Jersey-based online sportsbook PointsBet USA.

No. 11 Texas A&M Aggies at No. 1 Clemson Tigers (-18)

Perennial College Football Playoff contender Clemson got down to business quickly with an easy Week 1 victory. The Tigers (1-0 SU and ATS) put up two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters and hammered Georgia Tech 52-14, narrowly cashing as 37-point home favorites Thursday.

Texas A&M had no issues in its opener, either, though against a much less notable opponent. The Aggies (1-0 SU and ATS) dispatched Texas State 41-7, giving up a final-minute touchdown to barely cover as 33.5-point faves.

These two teams met last September, with host A&M rallying from a 21-6 deficit to nearly force overtime. The Aggies scored a last-minute TD to pull within 28-26, but the 2-point attempt failed and Clemson escaped as 12-point chalk.

?This season, things clearly are expected to be different in Death Valley,? Chaprales said, alluding to an 18-point opening line. ?This is Clemson?s toughest two-game stretch, so one can reasonably expect this line to come down a bit over the course of the week, but not too far. The line waffled early from 18 to 17.5 and back to 18, so we will see how it progresses.?

By later Monday morning, the number actually progressed upward to Clemson -18.5.

No. 6 Louisiana State Tigers at No. 10 Texas Longhorns (+4.5)

Expectations are high at Texas for the 2019-20 season, and this SEC/Big 12 showdown could demonstrate whether that?s justified. The Longhorns (1-0 SU and ATS) opened with an easy 45-14 victory over Louisiana Tech laying 19 points at home Saturday.

Likewise, LSU had little trouble in Week 1 as it hopes to mount a charge against Alabama this year in the Southeastern Conference. On Saturday, the Tigers (1-0 SU and ATS) dispatched Georgia Southern 55-3 giving 27 points at home.

?The Longhorns are the underdogs as ?GameDay? heads down to Austin in this marquee matchup,? Chaprales said. ?Neither team was really tested to open the season, but now, we can truly find out if Texas is back. There hasn?t been much action drawn on this one yet, but with such a big matchup on our hands, there should be an influx coming, especially with two incredibly public teams.?

No. 23 Stanford Cardinal at Southern California Trojans (no line)

Both these programs saw their starting quarterbacks get hurt in Week 1, but Southern Cal suffered the much more significant injury. JT Daniels tore his right ACL and meniscus in the second quarter against Fresno State on Saturday, and he will miss the rest of the year. The Trojans (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS) went on to win 31-23 as 14.5-point home favorites, but will now field a freshman QB in Kedon Slovis.

Stanford quarterback K.J. Costello exited Saturday?s home game with Northwestern after a hit to the head late in the first half, and his status is still undetermined. The Cardinal pulled off an extremely unlikely cover in that game, recovering a fumble for a touchdown with 20 seconds left in a 17-7 victory giving 6.5 points.

?The real, and most unfortunate, storyline here is Daniels? devastating torn ACL that has knocked him out for the season,? Chaprales said. ?What started out as a promising beginning has now turned into a potential nightmare for Clay Helton and the Trojans. But on the other side, Costello went down due to a very questionable hit up high. With both starting QBs injured, we do not have a line on this yet.

?Right now, we could see that number being around USC -3 to -4.5, but Costello?s status could greatly alter that. There?s still too much uncertainty.?

Cincinnati Bearcats at No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes (-16.5)

Ohio State got out of the gate in a huge hurry under new coach Ryan Day, who took over for the retired Urban Meyer. The Buckeyes (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS) scored 28 first-quarter points against Florida Atlantic and coasted to a 45-21 victory laying 27 points at home.

Cincinnati could be a more formidable opponent than the opening line suggests, as the program is coming off one of its best seasons (11-2 SU last year). The Bearcats kept it rolling in the 2019-20 opener, topping UCLA 24-14 as 2.5-point home favorites, the second straight year they?ve beaten the Bruins.

?Respect has to be given to Cincinnati, as Luke Fickell has the Bearcats well ahead of schedule,? Chaprales said of the coach entering his third season. ?This line could very well shift toward Cincy a small amount, as one can reasonably expect QB Justin Fields and the Buckeyes to be tested this week. This could be especially true if you put any stock into the fact that Fickell spent practically his whole career with the Buckeyes up until getting this job.

?If last week was any indication, people may have their eyes on this Bearcats squad.?

That said, the initial move on this line was toward Ohio State, to -17.

Odds Subject to Change

ILLINOIS

The Illini (-18) look to us like they?ll be an improved team this year and they began to prove that narrative on Saturday with a 42-3 win over Akron. It was their largest margin of victory since the 2016 opener when they crushed Murray State 52-3. The offense was led by Michigan transfer quaterback Brandon Peters who attempted only 23 passes (163 yards passing) but ushered his team to TD?s on each of their first 3 possessions. While Peters played well, the Illinois rushing game carried the load with 65% of their plays coming on the ground (207 total rushing yards on 46 carries). However, they were dealt a blow when Mike Esptein, one of their key tailbacks along with Reggie Corbin, was lost for the year with a knee injury.

Head coach Lovie Smith, whose background is on the defensive side of the ball, is now the defensive coordinator as well. He took over for Hardy Nickerson who resigned midseason a year ago. Smith had his defense looking very good on Saturday. After allowing nearly 42 PPG and over 500 YPG last year, the Illini held Akron to just 3 points on 198 total yards. Last year Illinois opened with a MAC opponent as well and allowed Kent to score 24 points on 453 yards so progress looks like it?s being made in Champaign. Keep in mind that Akron was just 4-8 last year and they are operating under a new head coach so the Illini enthusiasm may need to be tempered a bit. Illinois heads to Connecticut this weekend. The Huskies held on last week at home to beat Wagner 24-21.

INDIANA
The Hoosiers had a scare right out of the gate last week holding on to beat Ball State 34-24 in Indianapolis. IU was favored by 18 in the game and never came close to getting to that number. Their largest lead was just 14 and that didn?t come until there was only 13:00 left in the game. Ball State cut it to 7 with 6:30 remaining but Indiana closed it out with a late FG. Head coach Tom Allen went with freshman Michael Penix Jr. at QB as he beat out last year?s starter Peyton Ramsey who threw for nearly 3,000 yards and 19 TD?s a year ago. Penix played well throwing for 326 yards along with 67 yards on the ground which led the team. Only one other Indiana QB has been able to throw for over 300 yards in his freshman starting debut and that was Antwaan Randle El back in 1998. We remember Randle El very well as we began handicapping in the late 80?s and launched ASA Inc back in 1997! Back to Penix, while he is a freshman, he did get some experience last year playing in 3 games for the Hoosiers before being redshirted but his was his first start. For Penix to lead Indiana in rushing with just 67 yards is a concern. Especially facing a Ball State defense that allowed 240 YPG on the ground a year ago. RB Stevie Scott, who had over 1,100 yards rushing last year, had just 48 yards on 19 carries. However, IU?s rushing numbers may have taken a hit due to Ball State putting put 8+ defenders in the box for much of the game forcing the freshman QB to beat them and he did just that. After allowing 424 YPG a year ago, Allen was hoping to see a much better Indiana defense vs Ball State. Instead he was upset with their effort allowing 398 total yards mentioning the ?shoulder tackling? has to go. IU hosts Eastern Illinois next week before the Buckeyes come to town on September 14th.

IOWA
Our interest in this one was the drastic line movement on gameday. Iowa opened as a 21.5 point favorite vs Miami Oh back in late June and was sitting at -22 at most places on Saturday morning. By game time the number had pushed all the way to -25 or -25.5 at a majority of shops. The game ended with Iowa winning 38-14 so the line move and when people played the game was very significant. The game was in the balance with under 6:00 minutes remaining and Iowa up by just 10. They scored the final 2 TD?s of the game for the 38-14 win. The Hawkeyes never led by more than 17 points until 3:03 remaining in the game when their final TD pushed the margin to 24. Iowa dominated the stat sheet outgaining the Redhawks by 220 yards, including rolling up 213 yards rushing to just 59 for Miami. Iowa?s main concern defensively was up front where they were replacing all 4 starting defensive linemen. They held up more than well allowing just 2.5 yards per carry vs a Miami Oh team that is one of the favorites in the MAC East. After holding just a 10-7 lead at half, Iowa completely controlled the 2nd half racking up 295 yards to just 106 for the Redhawks. One major concern moving forward is starting LT Alaric Jackson, one of the best in the Big Ten, who exited with a knee injury and did not return. He will be out for several weeks at the least. Iowa opens the conference season next weekend hosting Rutgers before traveling to Iowa State the following Saturday as they try and hold onto the CyHawk Trophy.

MARYLAND
The Mike Locksley era at Maryland got off to an impressive start as the Terps (-31) crushed Howard 79-0. As you can see by the final score, not much to write here except total domination by Maryland. They were +20 first downs, put up 623 yards while holding Howard to 68, rushed for 317 yards while limiting the Bison to 1 yard on the ground. Howard only crossed midfield once and they were held inside their own 35 yard line on all but two of their offensive possessions. New QB Josh Jackson, a Virginia Tech transfer, threw 4 TD?s in the first half leading Maryland to a 56-0 halftime lead, the most points the Terps have ever scored in half. We?ll find out a lot more about this team on Saturday when they host Syracuse. The Orange shut out Liberty 24-0 last weekend.

MICHIGAN
The Wolves played host to Middle Tennessee State last Saturday and led just 24-14 late in the first half. They pulled away in the 2nd half on their way to a 40-21 win but didn?t come close to covering the 36-point spread. It was a bit of a disappointing performance vs an MTSU team that was replacing their all time leading passer and came into the game very inexperienced on the offensive line. The Wolverines unleased their new no-huddle, up tempo, spread offense for the first time under new offensive coordinator Josh Gattis who came over from Alabama in the off season. While they were very balanced with 233 yards rushing and 220 yards passing, Michigan only averaged 5.8 yards per play vs an MTSU defense that allowed 5.5 YPP last year vs a fairly pedestrian schedule. The U of M defense, which was ranked #1 nationally for much of last season, closed out last year allowing 62 points to Ohio State and 41 points to Florida in their bowl loss. They shut down the Blue Raiders rushing attack allowing only 67 yards on 28 carries. However, they struggled a bit with their pass defense as MTSU first time starter O?Hara was 22 of 32 for 217 yards and 2 TD?s. Michigan was without two key starters as OT Jon Runyan and WR Donovan Peoples-Jones both sat out with injuries. Head coach Jim Harbaugh said he hopes to have both back next Saturday when they host Army. That means just one week for the defense to prepare for Army?s option attack which is always difficult. The Cadets won at home 14-7 vs Rice last week moving their record to an impressive 22-6 their last 28 games.

MICHIGAN STATE
The Spartans looked just as we thought they would last weekend. Great on defense and not so great on offense. MSU (-23.5) topped Tulsa 28-7 giving them wins in 21-straight home openers. The defense was outstanding holding Tulsa to just 80 total yards. To say the Golden Hurricane couldn?t do anything on the ground would be an understatement. They had -73 yards on 25 carries for an average of -3 YPC. Yes, you read that correctly. Sparty was #1 in the nation against the run last season and they have a great jump on defending that title this year. After the game Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery said that MSU probably had the best defensive line he?s ever faced which is obviously high praise.

If only the offense could hold up their end of the bargain. They were held to 24 points or less in every Big Ten game last year and they were far from a well oiled unit last week. The offense scored just 2 TD?s and had only 303 total yards vs a Tulsa defense that allowed 30 PPG and 408 YPG a year ago. After averaging only 125 yards rushing last year, the Spartans tallied just 108 yards on the ground on 40 carries last week (2.7 YPC). Again, that was against a Tulsa defense that gave up 233 YPG on the ground last year. Brian Lewerke is back at QB and completed just 56% of his passes last Saturday after completing only 54% last year. This team can be very good but the offense needs to play much better. They can get by on defense alone vs the likes of Tulsa and some of the lower tier Big Ten teams. That won?t cut it against the top teams they play this year. MSU actually LOST 2 games last year in which their defense gave up less than 10 points. That simply can?t happen. Sparty hosts in state MAC foe Western Michigan next weekend.

MINNESOTA
The Gophers played host to FCS powerhouse South Dakota State last Saturday in a game that went to the wire. Minnesota (-14.5) never led by more than 13 and they were actually down 21-20 entering the 4th quarter before pulling out a 28-21 win. While it may look like a ho-hum performance by the Gophers keep in mind South Dakota State is a top 5 FCS team that was in the National Championship game last year, a loss to North Dakota State. That being said, Minnesota was not sharp. The Jackrabbits actually outgained Minnesota (367 to 308) with both accumulating 60 offensive snaps. One big concern coming out of the game was the performance of the offensive line. There was some uncertainty entering this game up front and the Gophers were only able to run for 132 yards on 42 carries (3.1 YPC). They were pushed around at times up front by their FCS opponent.

The defensive line wasn?t much better as the Jackrabbits rushed for 5.1 YPC. The Gophers need to play much better in the trenches moving forward as they face better opponents. Minny scored 28 points but two of their TD?s came as a direct result of SDSU turnovers ? one interception returned for a TD and a fumble that led to a 34-yard TD drive. In the end, a win is a win, but we weren?t impressed with Minnesota?s first game. They travel to Fresno State this weekend which is a revenge game for the Bulldogs who lost 21-14 at Minnesota last year.

NEBRASKA
In our opinion Nebraska has been overhyped the entire off-season and they proved us correct last Saturday. They entered as a 35 point chalk and were lucky to win 35-21. The talk of this team being a top 10 or 15 team in Scott Frost?s 2nd year at the helm was much to premature in our minds. While their offense was very good at the end of last year and QB Adrian Martinez is a potential star in the making, their defense was terrible. They allowed 434 YPG on nearly 6.0 yards per play last season. While we expect some improvement on that side of the ball, they?d have to make an awfully big jump to reach the lofty expectations put on them by the media and their fans.

Last Saturday, it was actually their offense that looked like it was stuck in neutral. They tallied just 276 yards on 66 offensive snaps and scored only 14 points. What makes matters look worse is they were facing a South Alabama defense that allowed 39 PPG on 450 YPG a year ago. The Huskers can thank their defense for this one which has been rare as we mentioned above. They forced the Jaguars into 5 turnovers, 2 of them going for TD?s on an interception return and fumble recovery in the endzone. The other Nebraska TD came on a 76-yard punt return. The fact is, they were outgained, had fewer first downs, lost the time of possession by nearly 10:00 minutes at home, as a 5 TD favorite, vs a team that was 3-9 last year. Let?s hold off on anointing this team the best in the Big Ten West. They may get there, but they are nowhere near where they need to be right now. This weekend they head to Boulder as a road favorite to take on Colorado.

NORTHWESTERN
This one literally came down to the final play (or 2nd to last play) of the game to decide the spread. Stanford was a 6.5 point chalk and led 10-7 with 30 seconds remaining and Northwestern had the ball at their own 20 yard line. It would take a miracle for Stanford to cover and that?s just what transpired. The Cats QB Hunter Johnson was sacked, fumbled and Stanford recovered in the endzone with 20 seconds remaining in the game to pick up a cover and a 17-7 win. Johnson was the much ballyhooed former 5-star transfer from Clemson and he struggled to say the least.

The QB duo of TJ Green and Johnson were only able to complete 44% of their passes and gain just 4.3 yards per pass attempt. On the ground the Wildcats were held to less than 3 YPC. They were outgained by 155 yards in the game. Just an ugly all around offensive performance for the Cats. They lost QB Green, son of former NFL QB Trent Green, to a foot injury. He?s already had surgery and might be gone for the entire season. Injuries were the lead story for NW coming out of this game as starting LT Slater, leading rusher Bowser, and team captain DB Williams all left the game. The good thing for Northwestern is they have a bye this week before hosting UNLV on September 14th.

OHIO STATE
Those who were on OSU (-28) on Saturday were getting ready to cash their tickets early on as the Bucks jumped out to a 28-0 lead with 6:50 still remaining in the first quarter. New starting QB Justin Fields, who transferred from Georgia, looked fantastic running for a TD and throwing for 3 more all less than 10:00 minutes into the game. The Buckeyes tallied 220 of their 469 total yards in the first quarter alone. Unfortunately for Buckeye backers they took their foot off the gas early. After scoring their 28th point with 6:50 left in the first stanza, OSU went more than 2 full quarters without a point scoring their next TD with 2:37 left in the 3rd quarter. FAU had two long scoring drives of 75 & 76 yards in the 4th quarter to pick up the cover losing 45-21. Those two 4th quarter drives accounted for almost 70% of the Owls yardage for the game (228 total yards).

OSU will get a much tougher test at home next Saturday when they host in-state program Cincinnati. The Bearcats are coming off a 10-point win over UCLA, they are 13-2 their last 15 games, they are coached by former Buckeye interim head coach and defensive coordinator Luke Fickell, and we can guarantee this will be Cincy?s biggest game of the season. Should be interesting.

PENN STATE
Similar to our Maryland synapsis above, really not much to say here. PSU came into the game as a ridiculous 41 point favorite and walked away with a 79-7 win. When?s the last time a team was favored by 41 and covered the number by 31 points! As expected when taking the final score into consideration, PSU completed dominated the ground game with 331 yards rushing while holding Idaho to just 4. The Nittany Lions averaged 7.4 YPC and 8.2 yards per play overall. They scored 10 TD?s in the game in their 82 offensive snaps for an average of one TD every 8.2 plays.

Just ridiculous. If you remember, Penn State was thrown for a loop when probable starting QB Tommy Stevens, a 5th year senior, decided to transfer to Mississippi State where he is now the Bulldogs starter. After that, Penn State head coach James Franklin turned to sophomore Sean Clifford, who had 7 career pass attempts, as his starting QB. Clifford looked great on Saturday throwing for 280 yards in the first half before sitting the rest of the way. Clifford also showed he can move very well with almost 60 yards rushing. Not much to take away from this game vs a terrible Idaho team that dropped from FBS to FCS status this year. Penn State hosts Buffalo on Saturday.

PURDUE
Meltdown! That is the theme of this one.

Purdue (-11) led Nevada 31-14 with under 4:00 remaining in the 3rd quarter and allowed the Wolfpack to come back for the 34-31 win. Nevada walk-on kicker Brandon Talton kicked a 56-yard FG as time expired to win. Talton was awarded a scholarship by head coach Jay Norvell after the game in a now much viewed twitter moment. Purdue had over 500 yards of total offense and outgained Nevada by 115 years but lost the turnover battle 5 to 0. That was the difference in the game. The final giveaway was the most damaging as Boilermaker starting QB Elijah Sindelar threw an interception with under 1:00 remaining in the game which led to the game winning FG for Nevada. Sindelar did throw for a career high 343 yards in the game. After taking a 31-14 lead on a 2-play 75 yard drive with 6:19 to go in the 3rd quarter, they gained only 55 yards on 24 plays from that point on. Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm admitted after the game they should have stayed more aggressive late in the game even though they had a 17-point lead. The running game struggled with just 96 yards and the offense was far from balanced with 29 rush attempts and 54 pass attempts. Not a great start facing a Nevada team that started a redshirt freshman at QB who had never attempted a pass in a college game.

Purdue attempts to get back on track this weekend as they host a Vanderbilt team that was smoked 30-6 at home vs Georgia. One bonus for the Boilers, they played last Friday (Vandy played on Saturday) giving them an extra day to prepare for this one.

RUTGERS
Rutgers has already matched their win total from a year ago after topping UMass 48-21 in their season opener. It didn?t look great early for the Scarlet Knights, who were favored by 17, as UMass jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter. The game played out in an odd way. The 2 teams combined to score 59 points on 619 yards in the first half which actually topped the game total of 54 before halftime. In the second half, they combined to score just 10 points on 239 total yards. After finishing 1-11 last year, Rutgers needed much better production from the QB position as last year?s starter Artur Sitkowski threw just 4 TD passes and 18 interceptions.

New starter McLane Carter, transfer from Texas Tech, definitely looked like an upgrade with 340 yards passing and 2 TD?s. Problem is, he also threw 3 picks which would never cut it for a team like Rutgers vs a solid FBS opponent. They were minus 14 in turnovers last year and that obviously has to be cleaned up or the Knights will remain at or near the bottom of the Big Ten. The Rutgers defense struggled early in the game allowing the Minutemen to score TD?s on their first 3 offensive possessions, but they locked down after that holding UMass scoreless over the final 45 minutes of the game. The Knights now kick off their Big Ten season at Iowa on Saturday.

WISCONSIN
Being in Madison, we receive very solid info and usually have a great feel for this Wisconsin team. We had been hearing that the defense, which struggled last year, was back to their form of 2015 ? 2017 when they finished in the top 5 nationally in scoring defense each of those 3 seasons. They definitely looked the part last Friday as the Badgers (-10.5) shut out South Florida on the road 49-0 which was the worst loss EVER for the Bulls. The emphasis defensively during the off season was to get back to stopping the run. Last year UW allowed an uncharacteristic 155 YPG on the ground after giving up just 95, 99, & 98 the previous 3 seasons. In the win, they allowed just 26 yards on 23 carries. The USF offense didn?t cross midfield until there was 4:43 remaining in the game and tallied just 157 total yards. A dominant performance for Wisconsin?s defense vs a team that averaged 28 PPG on 438 YPG last season.

Offensively it was the Jonathan Taylor show as everyone expected. He had 183 total yards and 4 TD?s and he didn?t play the final 28:00 minutes of the game. QB Jack Coan was decent completing 19 of his 26 attempts but missed at least 2 TD?s on deep overthrows to wide open receivers. Wisconsin did not escape unscathed as starting LB Orr is questionable while starting RT Bruss, starting DE Green-May, and starting safety Nelson are all out as they host Central Michigan. After hosting the Chippewas, Wisconsin has a week off before Michigan comes to Camp Randall.[/SIZE]

Injuries already taking a toll on Pac-12
September 3, 2019
By The Associated Press

It's just a week into the season and injuries are already taking a toll in the Pac-12.

USC quarterback J.T. Daniels and Stanford counterpart K.J. Costello were among the players who got knocked out of their season openers. So did Washington senior center Nick Harris.

Graduate transfer Juwan Johnson, expected to start at receiver for Oregon, didn't even suit up for Saturday's big game against Auburn. And UCLA was missing several top playmakers.

Daniels' injury will arguably have the biggest impact on his team. The 6-foot-3 sophomore tore a ligament and the meniscus in his right knee late in the first half of the Trojans' 31-23 victory over Fresno State and will miss the rest of the season.

Daniels was adjusting this season to an Air Raid-style offense under new offensive coordinator Graham Harrell and had fared well in the opener before he was hurt, throwing for 215 yards and a touchdown.

Now USC (1-0) must turn to freshman quarterback Kedon Slovis. There's also the intriguing possibility that USC could lure back redshirt sophomore Jack Sears, who had announced last week his intention to enter the transfer portal after losing out to Daniels.

''One of the things that Jack and I always talked about, and I said, `Hey, there is always an open door here,''' Helton said Saturday night. ''And he told me, he said, `Coach, if you ever need me, I'm there for you.'''

Slovis' debut as starter might come against another QB getting his first start, Stanford's Davis Mills. The Trojans host the Cardinal (1-0) on Saturday in an early conference matchup at the Coliseum.

Stanford coach David Shaw said Costello is questionable for the game.

Costello got a forearm to the facemask from Northwestern's Earnest Brown late in the first half Saturday. Costello, who threw for 152 yards and a touchdown before he was hurt, did not return. Brown was called for a late hit, but not targeting.

Shaw said Tuesday he believed the officials missed the call.

Mills, a junior, replaced Costello and threw for 81 yards, but he also fumbled twice and the Cardinal did not score in the second half. With the 17-7 victory, Stanford moved up two spots to No. 23 in the AP Top 25 released Tuesday.

Shaw, who had recruited Daniels, called the season-ending injury a shame. But he said it would not have too much impact on Stanford's preparation.

''Our defensive mentality is to accentuate what we do well and we talk a lot about our scheme versus their scheme, more so than who is playing quarterback,'' Shaw said. ''The young man went in there last week and made some great throws and some nice plays, but for the most part for us we've got to go in there and play to our strengths and play our style of football.''

Junior left tackle Walker Little injured his leg on the final drive of the game. Shaw said Stanford hopes to see Little back by midseason.

OREGON'S RECEIVER WOES: It was something of a surprise when Johnson was sidelined for the Ducks' season-opening 27-21 loss to Auburn.

Coach Mario Cristobal said Monday that the unspecified injury occurred late last week in practice and Johnson is currently listed as day-to-day. The Ducks were already hurting at receiver with Brenden Schooler (right foot) and Mycah Pittman (right shoulder) both out. Promising freshman receiver JR Waters will miss the season with a foot injury.

To help alleviate the situation, the Ducks have moved redshirt freshman tight end Spencer Webb to receiver. Webb had three catches for 28 yards and a touchdown in the opener.

''He played a lot of wide receiver or I would say a lot of detached tight end formational stuff in high school,'' Cristobal said. ''So he's very natural in space. And when the opportunity arose with all of the injuries that transpired we felt, `You know what, let's give this thing a look.'''

The Ducks also moved sophomore cornerback Daewood Davis to receiver. That's where Davis played his first year with the Ducks.

Oregon dropped from No. 11 to No. 16 following the loss to the Tigers. Next up, the Ducks (0-1) host Nevada (1-0) at Autzen Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

WOODS INJURY: There's no word on Washington State standout linebacker Jahad Woods, who had six tackles against New Mexico State before he left the game in the third quarter with an apparent shoulder injury.

Because Cougars coach Mike Leach doesn't talk about injuries, it's unlikely his status will be updated. But Woods' backup, walk-on redshirt freshman Hank Pladson, filled in the rest of the way and had his first interception in the 58-7 Washington State win.

Next up for the No. 23 Cougars (1-0) is Northern Colorado (0-1) on Saturday at Martin Stadium.

UCLA HAMPERED: The Bruins were without top running back Joshua Kelley (knee), receiver Theo Howard (hand/wrist), cornerback Darnay Holms (undisclosed) for Thursday night's 24-14 loss at Cincinnati.

Howard, a senior who had a streak of 28 games with a reception going into the opener, was injured for much of training camp but had recently returned to practice, as had Kelley.

Coach Chip Kelly said afterward that the Bruins ''made the decision we weren't going to put them out there if they weren't 100%. That wouldn't have been fair to the player and we're always going to err on the side of safety.''

Next up for UCLA (0-1) is San Diego State (1-0) at the Rose Bowl.

MELE STEPS UP: Harris was injured in the first half of the Huskies' 47-14 victory over Eastern Washington and did not return, but redshirt freshman backup Matteo Mele jumped right into the role.

Harris is week-to-week with an unspecified injury.

''You never know when that day is going to come where the guy's gotta go, so he (Mele) got a lot of good reps,'' coach Chris Petersen said. ''Gotta keep progressing with him and Nick's week-to-week, and we'll go from there.''

The Huskies (1-0) host California (1-0) on Saturday in another early conference game.
