Friday?s Den: Going back to school, and our first set of NBA trends??.

Feel like I?ve gone back to school this week; been studying college basketball, which has changed drastically over the last five years.

Last year was a debacle for everyone; TCU had one full practice before they played a game, Many teams had 2-week/3-week lapses because of COVID. Kids are switching schools left and right; I expect a kid to transfer during a TV timeout, switching benches during a game.

Lot of the methods I used to use to pick games on this site don?t matter as much anymore; trends from previous years? the transfer epidemic has made past history less relevant. All that matters now is the current roster, and how coaches are at creating chemistry after the dust clears from the transfer chaos.

I went to UAlbany, a low-major school; they fired their coach last spring, a guy who had brought the Great Danes to five NCAA tourneys in 20 years.

I am told the coach and AD despise each other, but three years ago, with Albany one of the favorites in America East, both his returning starting guards transferred, one to Florida State, one to Villanova. Albany had a losing season; if those two kids had stayed, Great Danes might?ve won the league, and the coach would?ve gotten a raise instead of losing his job.

South Florida lost five transfers last spring; they added seven transfers. They basically have a whole new team. Lot of schools like that. Do they teams with lot of returning players have a big advantage early on?

Minnesota changed coaches, then 10 of their 12 players transferred out of town. The new coach had two players and one of those can?t play because he had his knee operated on. He now has players from 10 different states; harder to have good chemistry that way.

Texas poached eight players and added two freshmen- their haul of transfers is supposedly the best in the country.

On and on it goes; the transfer portal is huge in college basketball right now. Once the games start in couple weeks, we?ll be studying rosters to see who did the best job at cobbling together a viable team.

At least it is invigorating that things seem to be getting back to normal; I?m studying up on these teams, will provide you what information I can as the season goes on. The bottom line one all this is that we?ll be studying numbers as closely as ever, just a different set of numbers.

Saturday?s Den: Clearing out a cluttered mind??..

13) If you read this site much, you know I?m a big Oakland A?s fan; tough week this week, with Bob Melvin leaving Oakland to become manager of the San Diego Padres.

Melvin grew up in the Bay Area, was an A?s fan growing up. He managed the A?s for 11 years, making the playoffs six times, while working for cheapskate owners who don?t give a rat?s ass about winning games. Melvin is an excellent manager; other than Dick Williams, he?s the best manager the Oakland A?s have ever had.

Melvin?s record with the A?s: 860-777. He will be missed.

12) Does Melvin leaving Oakland signal that the A?s will also leave Oakland? Fair question.

11) Braves 2, Astros 0:
? Anderson threw five no-hit IP to get the win.
? d?Arnaud homered for insurance run in 8th inning.
? Braves lead World Series, 2-1

10) Navy 20, Tulsa 17:
? Middies (+11) ran ball for 302 yards, didn?t complete a pass (0-4).
? Navy has a good kicker; he made a 46-yard FG.
? Game was 3-3 at halftime.

9) Heard a guy say once, ?Handicapping early season NBA games is really hard. The bad teams haven?t realized yet that they?re bad.?

8) Nebraska has lost 17 football games by 8 or fewer points since Scott Frost has been their coach, more than any other team in the country during that time. Cornhuskers are 3-5 this year; this would be their fifth losing season in a row.

7) NFL notes:
? Browns? QB Baker Mayfield is starting against Pittsburgh Sunday.
? Spread in Dallas-Minnesota game swung 5.5 points since Thursday, leading to speculation that Dak Prescott (calf) may sit out Sunday night?s game.
? Green Bay TE Robert Tonyan tore his ACL, is out for the year.

6) Back in July, the Cleveland Indians announced that they?ll be called the Guardians starting next season; Wednesday, a Cleveland-based roller derby team, also named the Cleveland Guardians, sued the Indians? franchise in federal court in an effort to block their use of the name.

Once again, no matter what happen$, the lawyer$ will be the real winner$$$$.

5) Someone has to clue me in as to what Crypto currency is; I?m watching TV the other night and Matt Damon is doing a commercial. You know it is big if they hired Matt Damon to do their ad work for them.

My laptop tells me that Crypto is a digital currency that can be used to buy goods and services, but uses an online ledger with strong cryptography to secure online transactions, which sounds like a foreign language to me. I have a hard enough time with regular money.

4) If you?ve never seen a pro hockey game in person, I highly endorse it; to me, it is the one sport that loses the most from in-person to television. So much more to see in person; I like to watch the officials, what great skaters they are.

3) Former NBA Vince Carter holds an unusual record; he had 261 different teammates during his 22-year career, more teammates than anyone else in NBA history. Think I heard that Ish Smith has had 211 teammates; he is the active player that is closest to Carter?s record.

2) NFL commish Roger Goodell banked roughly $128M the last two years, running the most popular sports league in this country.

1) Green Bay 24, Arizona 21
? Packers picked off pass in end zone with o:xx left to preserve win.
? Packers have been positive in turnovers last seven games (+11)
? Green Bay ran ball for 151 yards (4.4/carry)
? Green Bay won last seven games (5-1-1 ATS), scoring 27.0 ppg.

? Plays run in first half: Packers 42, Cardinals 17.
? Arizona still leads NFC West, at 7-1.
? Under Kingsbury, Arizona is 4-7 ATS as a home favorites.
? NFC West non-divisional home favorites are 2-6 ATS.

Sunday?s quiz
What team was Dusty Baker managing, last time he managed in a World Series?

Saturday?s quiz
Brian Bosworth plays the sheriff in Dr Pepper commercials that are on TV all day during college football games.

Friday?s quiz
Dak Prescott played his college football at Mississippi State.

*******************************

Sunday?s Den: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

13) Michigan State 37, Michigan 33:
? Walker ran for 191 yards, five TD?s; his 23-yard TD run with 5:08 left won the game.
? Michigan led 30-14 with 5:00 left in third quarter.
? Wolverines outgained State, 552-395- they had a 93-yard TD pass.

12) Houston 44, SMU 37:
? SMU tied game on a 45-yard FG with 0:30 left.
? Houston ran the ensuing kickoff back 100 yards for game-winning TD.
? Mustangs lose their first game; both teams are now 7-1.
? Houston QB Tune threw for 412 yards, four TD?s.
? Only 2nd time in last 15 years there was a game-winning kick return in last minute of a game.

11) Clemson 30, Florida State 20
? Early nominee for Bad Beat of the Decade. Seminoles (+9.5) have ball at end of game on their own 33, down 24-20. They throw a pass and start to lateral all over the field, but they go in the wrong direction, and Clemson runs an errant lateral into the end zone to cover the spread by half a point with the clock at 0:00.

If you laid 9.5 with Clemson, Happy Halloween.

10) Baylor 31, Texas 24:
? Baylor is 7-1; can they keep their coach from bolting?
? Texas led 21-10 with 5:00 left in third quarter.
? Longhorns are 4-4, not what they had in mind when they fired their coach LY.

9) Miami 38, Pittsburgh 34:
? Miami had TD plays of 20-57-40 yards in first quarter.
? Pitt QB Pickett threw for 519 yards in a losing cause.
? Panthers had 107 penalty yards, turned ball over twice.

8) West Virginia 38, Iowa State 31:
? Mountaineers outscored ISU 14-0 in 4th quarter.
? Cyclones had TD plays of 70-68 yards in first quarter.
? WVU had two receivers with 100+ receiving yards.
? Iowa State is 5-3, a disappointing team.

7) Upsets of the Week:
? Washington State (+16.5) 34, Arizona State 21
? Bowling Green (+13) 56, Buffalo 44
? Navy (+11) 20, Tulsa 17
? Miami (+9.5) 38, Pitt 34
? West Virginia (+7.5) 38, Iowa State 31
? Purdue (+7.5) 28, Nebraska 23

6) Georgia 34, Florida 7:
? Game was 3-0 near end of first half, then Florida?s offense imploded.
? Georgia scored three TD?s in 2:09 span late in first half to break game open.
? Dawgs? first two TD drives were 11-36 yards; they also had a pick-6.
? Both teams turned ball over three times.

5) Wake Forest 45, Duke 7
? If Dave Clawson is still Wake?s coach next season, some athletic directors need to lose their jobs. This guy should have a better job. Demon Deacons are 8-0 for the first time ever; they?re the smallest school in country in a Power 5 conference.

4) Cincinnati 31, Tulane 12
? When the first poll comes out for the national playoff, will be interesting where the Bearcats land. They beat Notre Dame in South Bend, after all.

3) North Texas 30, Rice 24 OT:
? Owls tied game on 12-yard TD pass with 0:16 left.
? Rice outgained North Texas, 366-289, but had 109 penalty yards.
? Rice converted all four of their 4th down plays.

2) Old Dominion 23, Louisiana Tech 20:
? Monarchs kicked two FG?s in last 1:52.
? Nick Rice kicked 46-yarder at 0:00 for the win.
? ODU had a 100-yard kick return in first half.

1) Ohio State 33, Penn State 24:? Serious question; if James Franklin bolts Happy Valley for either LSU or USC, what %age of Penn State fans will be upset?

? Penn State lost last three games, by 3-2-9 points.
? Buckeyes outgained PSU 466-394.
? Nittany Lions converted 11-16 third down plays.

?We?re in the season now. We?ll do recruiting after the season ? when it gets to recruiting time we can talk about recruiting.?
Florida football coach Dan Mullen

Tuesday?s quiz
Which two coaches won a Super Bowl coaching the Chiefs?

Monday?s quiz
Bud Grant coached the Vikings for 18 years; he played 96 games for the Minneapolis Lakers (1949-51), scooting 2.6 ppg.

Sunday?s quiz
Dusty Baker was managing the Giants in 2002, last time he managed in a World Series.

Tuesday?s Den: Nobody asked me, but??..plus NHL trends

13) Kansas City 20, NY Giants 17:
? Chiefs kicked 34-yard FG with 1:07 left for winning score.
? Giants have been outscored 61-12 in last 2:00 of each half.
? Giants are 23-8 ATS last 31 games as a road underdog.
? penalties: Giants 10-88, Chiefs 12-103

? Chiefs are 0-4 ATS at home this season.
? KC has only two TD?s on its last 18 drives.
? Chiefs turned ball over 19 times in last seven games (-13)
? KC has 29 plays of 20+ yards, their opponents have 38.

12) What have you done for me lately?

TCU fires Gary Patterson? Why? Patterson is the winningest coach in TCU history (181-79), one of the greatest defensive minds of the modern era, creating a defense that was effective at shutting down air raid-type offenses that are so popular now.

?We?re with you win or tie, but we?re not that crazy about ties?

Thats basically how these programs act; Texas/Oklahoma are bolting for the SEC, so schools like TCU, Texas Tech will slide down the national ladder- they?re desperate for attention so they can recruit the better players in talent-rich Texas. Players win games, no doubt about that.

Would enjoy hearing Patterson as a TV analyst; am guessing he has a lot to say.

11) Four teams in AFC South have played 20 non-divisional games this season; they?ve been the underdog in 18 of those 20 games.

10) Jets QB Mike White threw for 405 yards, three TD?s in his first NFL start Sunday; he is the first QB since 1950 to throw for 400+ yards, 3+ TD?s in his first NFL start. Is the Jets QB of the future White or Zach Wilson? Jets could rake in some draft capital by trading the other one, and there are teams who desperately need a quarterback moving forward.

9) With 4:30 left Saturday night., Ole Miss is trailing Auburn 31-20; they have 4th down around the Auburn 18 or 20 yard line. They?re down 11 points, they need two scores. Kick the FG.

But Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin doesn?t think the way most people think; he goes for the first down and eventual TD, instead of the easy FG- they don?t get the first down, and the game was essentially over right there and then.

8) Ole Miss plays Liberty this week; visiting Flames are 7-2, led by former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze, who went 42-26 in five years coaching the Rebels, winning the 2015 Sugar Bowl.

Freeze wound up quitting at Ole Miss because he used his school-issued cellphone to call escort services. Lesson of the Day, kids: if you?re going to call an escort service, use your own phone, not the one your employer is paying for.

7) NFL updates:
? Titans RB Derrick Henry (foot) is out 6-10 weeks.
? Saints QB Jameis Winston tore his ACL, is out for the year.
? Rams traded 2nd/3rd round picks to Denver, for LB Von Miller.

6) 27-year old WR Cyril Grayson caught a TD pass for Tampa Bay Sunday; he never played college football, he was a track sprinter at LSU. Grayson has bounced around NFL practice squads the last four years; he caught 8 TD passes as a senior in high school? Sunday was his first touchdown since then.

5) Cooper Rush was the winning QB for Dallas in Minnesota Sunday night; he is making $920,000 this year to be the Cowboys? backup QB. Kirk Cousins is making $31M from the Vikings this season.

4) 68 teams have been up 3-2 in a World Series; those teams are 45-23 in those series.

3) Alabama has been one of the dominant teams in college football for a while now, but Sunday was Nick Saban?s 70th birthday; good luck to the athletic director who has to pick the coach who takes Saban?s place- that will likely happen sooner than later. Schools will start using Saban?s age against him in recruiting; similar thing happened to Bear Bryant back in the day.

He is such an excellent coach; the guy who replaces him has huge shoes to fill.

2) Late Saturday night, BYU beat Virginia 66-49; game ended at 1:55am here in the East. Cavaliers led this game 42-38 at halftime.

Virginia QB Armstrong, who has thrown for 3,557 yards, 27 TD?s this year, left this game late with an apparent rib injury. Cavaliers have this week off, host Notre Dame November 13.

1) RIP to former big league 2B Jerry Remy, who passed away this week at age 68. Remy had cancer for several years; he hit .275 in a 10-year playing career for Angels/Red Sox.

After his playing days, Remy gained notoriety as a TV analyst on Red Sox games; the team of Remy and play-by-play guy Don Orsillo was television gold- they were so great together, lot of laughter and good natured banter. RIP, sir.

****************************

Thursday?s Den: Happy Opening Day??.

13) Two Opening Day games were already postponed until Friday by weather; Boston-New York, Seattle-Minnesota.

12) Cincinnati Reds released OF Shogo Akiyama, eating $8M in process; Akiyama hit .224 for the Reds, with no homers and 21 RBIs in 142 games.

11) Cleveland Guardians signed 3B Jose Ramirez to a 5-year, $124M contract extension.

10) I said the other day the that #7-seed UConn in 2014 was the lowest-seeded team to win the national title in basketball; the 1985 Villanova Wildcats were a #8-seed- they upset Georgetown to win the national title that year.

Since today is Opening Day of baseball season, here is my starting nine of baseball movies:
9) League of Their Own? Tom Hanks manages a team in a female professional baseball league, with Madonna as an outfielder, Geena Davis as the catcher.

Janet Jones is a pitcher for Racine; she is now better known as Mrs Wayne Gretzky. Jon Lovitz is great as a scout for the league. David L Lander is an announcer; he is best known for playing Squiggy in the old Laverne & Shirley TV show.

8) Trouble With the Curve? Clint Eastwood is an aging baseball scout whose old-school ways are at odds with modern thinking. Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, Amy Adams are also in this underrated movie.

7) Bad News Bears? Walter Matthau is a Little League coach in California who turns his team around by recruiting an old girlfriend?s daughter to be his team?s pitcher. Tatum O?Neal plays the pitcher; in real-life, her half-brother is Patrick O?Neal, who these days does pregame shows for the Angels and the Anaheim Ducks.

6) The Rookie? True story of a high school baseball coach in Texas who tells his team he?ll try out for the major leagues if the team makes the playoffs. The team makes the playoffs and the coach winds up in the majors; story would be a little sketchy, except it is true.

5) The Natural? An older ballplayer comes out of nowhere to help a struggling team make the playoffs. Robert Redford plays Roy Hobbs; Wilford Brimley is great as the manager of the New York Knights. Movie was filmed in Buffalo, where the Bills used to play before they built Rich Stadium.

4) Little Big League? 12-year old kid inherits the Minnesota Twins after his grandfather dies; he then names himself the manager. Shaky premise but a good movie, with several big leaguers in it.

Ashley Crow plays the kid?s mom; in real life, her son is Pete Crow-Armstrong, a first round pick of the Mets in 2020? he is now in the Cubs? farm system.

T3) Bull Durham? Susan Sarandon is a baseball groupie who has an affair with one player every season; when this movie was made a long time ago, the Durham Bulls were a Class A farm club. These days, they are the Tampa Bay Rays? AAA farm team, with better pitchers than Tim Robbins.

T3) Major League? Owner of the Cleveland Indians puts together a purposely terrible team so they?ll lose and she can move the team to Miami. Movie was made before anyone realized that a baseball team in Miami was a bad idea.

Bob Uecker steals the show as the team?s radio announcer; Charlie Sheen is the relief pitcher, Tom Berenger the veteran catcher.

2) For Love of the Game? A Hall of Fame pitcher at the tail end of his career saves his best game for last. Kevin Costner is the pitcher; JK Simmons is the manager, John C Reilly is the catcher.

1) Moneyball? I?m an A?s fan; what did you expect? Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane, GM of a major league team that succeeds despite having a cheap owner. 20 years later and the same stuff is still going on.
