Sunday’s 6-pack
NFL teams with highest %age of homegrown players on their roster:
81.7%— Cowboys
75.8%— Ravens
75%— Rams
71.9%— Colts
67.8%— Vikings
67.2%— Packers

Quote of the Day
“If history’s a lesson to help us understand the future, it won’t be easy. But minds change, motivations change. … There’s a bunch of moving parts. That’s where I wish we could have used the last nine months to work. We’ll have to accelerate our consideration to make it happen.”
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, talking about the 12-team football playoff

Sunday’s quiz
Tennessee Titans have played in one Super Bowl; who was their QB that day?

Saturday’s quiz
Keith Hernandez won a World Series playing for the ’86 Mets; he is a TV analyst on their games now. Hernandez played for the Cardinals before he went to New York.

Friday’s quiz
Ryan Fitzpatrick played QB for nine different NFL teams; he played for the Rams first, starting three games in 2005.

********************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up this season’s first college football Saturday

— This may have been the strangest football game I’ve ever seen:

North Carolina 63, Appalachian State 61
App State scored 40 points in the 4th quarter- they lost.
UNC scored 34 straight points at one point, and damn near had to go to overtime.

Total yardage: App State 649, Carolina 567
App State scored TD’s on their first three drives, then didn’t score again until the 4th quarter, when six different Mountaineers scored a touchdown.

Six of their guys each scored a TD in one quarter, and they still lost.

Kid on North Carolina ran an onside kick back for a TD with 0:28 left, giving them a 63-55 lead, but if he had just fallen down instead of scoring the TD, the game would’ve been over and App State wouldn’t have gotten their last chance to tie the game.

Mountaineers failed on two 2-point plays in the last minute; one would’ve tied the game, the first one would’ve put App State ahead.

Miller Gibbs caught a TD pass for App State; his grandfather is Joe Gibbs, the old Redskins’ coach who won three Super Bowls on his way to the Hall of Fame.

— Mack Brown coached App State for one year, back in 1983; he made $38,500, then bolted to Oklahoma to be an assistant, for a lot more $$$$. He still has a home near App State; he said his neighbors were all rooting against him Saturday.

NC State 21, East Carolina 20— Huge sigh of relief comes from Raleigh- they almost blew a 21-7 halftime lead.

East Carolina missed a PAT and a 41-yard FG in the 4th quarter; their kicker was the best one in the AAC last season.

State completed only 17-33 passes, converted only 4-13 on third down; ECU outgained them, 383-344. Both teams turned the ball over twice.

Iowa 7, South Dakota State 3— Game was 3-3 at the half; Hawkeyes scored two safeties in the second half. Total yardage was 166-120, that’s for the whole freakin’ game. 166-120.

Iowa’s defense scored 4 points, their offense scored 3 points.

South Dakota State is I-AA, but Iowa ran for only 57 yards, completed only 11-25 passes, turned ball over twice, converted 4-17 on third down. Other than that, they were terrific.

Rutgers 22, Boston College 21
Rutgers drove 96 yards for the winning TD (a 22-yard run) with 2:43 left.
Boston College led 14-6 at halftime.
Rutgers ran for 212 yards, BC ran for 29.
Eagles turned ball over three times (minus-2).

Houston 37, Texas-San Antonio 35 OT
Roadrunners kicked a FG at the gun to force overtime, after Houston had kicked one with 0:23 left to take a 24-21 lead.
UTSA led 21-7 after three quarters.
UTSA outgained Houston, 441-346, but the Cougars converted 13-21 on third down.

Wyoming 40, Tulsa 37 OT
Tulsa led 34-24 with 12:00 to play.
Wyoming scored a TD on a blocked punt.
Tulsa outgained the Cowboys, 521-399.
Wyoming completed 20-30 passes for 256 yards; last week, they completed 5-20 passes.

Arkansas 31, Cincinnati 24
Razorbacks led 14-0 at halftime.
Arkansas ran ball for 224 yards 95 yards/carry)
Arkansas QB Jefferson threw for 223 yards, 3 TDs, ran for another 62 yards and a TD.

Ole Miss 28, Troy 10— Lane Kiffin’s father is Monte Kiffin, who was a defensive coordinator in the NFL (a great one) for many years. The TV guys on this game showed how Lane Kiffin lived in seven different cities, before he even went to college.

This is an under-reported part of football coaching, how coaches are nomadic— it probably has more of an effect on their families, since the coaches spend most of their time in their offices anyway. Kids have to go to different schools, make new friends. Has to be difficult.

Nebraska 38, North Dakota 17— This game was 17-17 with 3:00 left in the third quarter; the final score is misleading. North Dakota is a I-AA team. Lets just say, the natives are restless in Lincoln.

Georgia 49, Oregon 3— Rough start to the Dan Lanning era in Eugene; total yardage was 571-313, a total beatdown. Georgia scored a TD the first seven times they had the ball.

USC 66, Rice 14— USC scored on three pick-6’s; their defense outscored the Rice offense, 21-14.

Florida 29, Utah 26— Good game.
Gators scored game-winning TD with 1:25 left.
Total yardage was 451-446, Florida.
Utah converted 8-13 on third down, Gators 7-12.

Liberty 29, Southern Mississippi 27 OT
Liberty tied game on a 23-yard TD pass with 0:36 left.
Liberty was 8-20 on third down, USM 3-12.
Southern Miss turned ball over five times (minus-2)

Ohio State 21, Notre Dame 10
Buckeyes outscored Notre Dame 14-0 in second half.
Ohio State outgained Irish, 395-253
Buckeyes ran 69 plays, Notre Dame only 48.
Buckeyes converted 7-13 on 3rd down, Notre Dame 3-13.

— Upsets of the Week:
Old Dominion (+8.5) 20, Virginia Tech 17
Rutgers (+7) 22, Boston College 21
Arizona (+6) 38, San Diego State 20
Wyoming (+5) 40, Tulsa 37 OT
Syracuse (+4) 31, Louisville 7
Ohio U 41 (+3.5), Florida Atlantic 38 OT

Monday’s 6-pack
Interesting spreads for next week’s college football:
— Louisville @ Central Florida (-6.5)
— South Carolina @ Arkansas (-7.5)
— Alabama (-20.5) vs Texas
— Wake Forest (-7) @ Vanderbilt
— Missouri @ Kansas State (-8)
— Tennessee (-6.5) @ Pittsburgh

Quote of the Day
“I still have a lot of confidence in him (QB Spencer Petras). I think the noise on the outside is probably a lot louder than it is inside.”
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, after his team won 7-3 Saturday, scoring two second half safeties against a I-AA opponent

Monday’s quiz
Which Division I college football team is known as the Chanticleers?

Sunday’s quiz
Tennessee Titans have played in one Super Bowl; Steve McNair was their QB that day.

Saturday’s quiz
Keith Hernandez won a World Series playing for the ’86 Mets; he is a TV analyst on their games now. Hernandez played for the Cardinals before he went to New York.

******************************

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend

13) Florida State 24, LSU 23:
— Down 24-10, LSU scored two TD’s in last 4:07, but the PAT with 0:00 left was blocked.
— Florida State converted 11-17 third down plays.
— LSU QB Daniels ran for 114 yards, threw for 209 yards, two TD’s.
— Florida State is 2-0 for the first time since 2016.

12) It is possible that I watch too much television; for the second time in less than a year, I’ve worn out the remote control for my DirecTV- the 5 button and 0 button don’t work anymore. A new remote is expected to arrive Tuesday, just in time for football season.

11) Watching lot of movies/TV shows, I’ve noticed that people in TV/movies very seldom watch TV themselves. No one in the movies ever watches TV while eating Cheetos at 3am; am I the only person who does this?

10) New England Patriots are about to start a season with a 2nd-year QB who is being coached by two assistants who are both two of the worst head coaches in NFL history— Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, neither of whom has a pedigree in offense.

Will Bill Belichick have to coach the offense? Losing Josh McDaniels to the Raiders ain’t going to help Mac Jones’ development any. The QB has a voice in his earpiece before every play; it would be nice if the voice had an expertise in offense.

9) Minnesota Twins are five games out of the last Wild Card slot; they’re 3-12 on the road this season, when the winning run scored from the 7th inning on.

8) In nine of the 16 NFL games in Week 1, both starting QB’s were first round draft picks.

7) They were saying on TV Sunday that Washington Nationals’ P Erick Fedde has trouble keeping his weight up during the season. As a result, he eats fried rice for breakfast every freakin’ day.

I’ve eaten my share of fried rice; there is a takeout place near my home where if I walk in, the lady at the counter yells out, “One quart, chicken fried rice” with a thick Asian accent before I say anything, but I can’t imagine having it every morning,

Yikes.

6) Old Dominion, Southern Mississippi have jumped from Conference USA to the Sun Belt Conference. All these teams bolting conferences screws up my record keeping. Oy.

Sun Belt games should be on TV more; pretty good league.

5) Arizona upset San Diego State Saturday night, but not before they blocked one of their own punts. Wildcats were punting out of their own end zone; as the punter kicked the ball, one of his blockers backed into his path, and the ball hit his left arm. The Aztecs recovered the ball for a touchdown, but Arizona still won 38-20, an impressive win.

4) Utah Utes’ kicker is a 30-year old sophomore from England; Jordan Noyes is a Sociology major who is married with a daughter. Utah also has a punter from Australia.

3) North Texas QB Austin Aune turns 29 years old Tuesday; he was picked in the 2nd round of the amateur baseball draft, then spent six years playing in the minor leagues, before he ever went to college.

Aune threw for 422 yards, three TD’s as the Mean Green split their first two games.

2) ESPN had a knife-throwing league on TV late Saturday night; had no idea something like that existed. Wouldn’t want to be a referee in that league.

1) This was the last Sunday of 2022 with no NFL games; it figures to be a fun season.

Tuesday’s 6-pack
Interesting spreads for this week’s college football:
— Memphis (-6.5) @ Navy
— Iowa State @ Iowa (-3.5)
— Houston @ Texas Tech (-3)
— UNLV @ California (-13.5)
— Virginia @ Illinois (-4.5)
— UAB (-5.5) @ Liberty

Quote of the Day
“This dude’s got incredible stride length. And really, for a man who is 6-foot-5, his speed is legit. It was nice having him. He’s a different type of receiver than we’ve had. A guy that big with that type of stride length with that speed.”
Aaron Rodgers, talking about rookie WR Christian Watson

Tuesday’s quiz
Who managed the Arizona Diamondbacks when they won their only World Series title?

Monday’s quiz
Coastal Carolina’s football team is known as the Chanticleers.

Sunday’s quiz
Tennessee Titans have played in one Super Bowl; Steve McNair was their QB that day.

******************************

Tuesday’s Den: My 13 favorite movies……..

13) The Fabulous Baker Boys— Two struggling musicians, who are brothers, team up with a beautiful, up-and-coming singer, who revitalizes their careers. Michelle Pfeiffer is the singer; Jeff/Beau Bridges are the two brothers.

12) Bull Durham— Susan Sarandon is a minor league baseball groupie; Kevin Costner is a journeyman catcher brought in to mentor the team’s young pitching prospect. Durham Bulls were a Class A farm club when this movie was made (1988); they’re a AAA team now.

11) Major League— The new owner of the Cleveland Indians puts together a horrible team on purpose so they’ll lose and she can move the team to Miami, but it is the movies, so of course, they win the pennant.

Couple of things:
— Moving a ball club to Miami turned out to be a terrible idea in real life.
— Bob Uecker steals the show in this movie as the team’s radio announcer.

10) Prince of Tides— A high school football coach from the South (Nick Nolte) talks to his suicidal sister’s psychiatrist (Barbra Streisand) in New York City about their family history and, because it is the movies, they fall in love. George Carlin has a pretty good cameo as a neighbor of the psychiatrist.

9) Cousins— Ted Danson plays a dance instructor in a failing relationship who meets a woman (Isabella Rossellini) at a family wedding and they become great friends- her husband isn’t amused. Lloyd Bridges is excellent as Danson’s father. William Peterson played the unhappy car salesman/husband.

Danson/Peterson both wound being the star of CSI, at different times. Cousins ends with the happy couple literally sailing off into the sunset. 26 years later, in the last scene of CSI, William Peterson/Jorja Fox also sail off into the sunset, a very similar scene.

8) The Bodyguard— A former Secret Service agent takes the job of a famous singer’s bodyguard, whose lifestyle is a lot different than a President’s.

Of the 13 movies on this list, Robert Wuhl has a small role in three of them; he plays the host of the Academy Awards in this movie. He was a pitching coach in Bull Durham, and a basketball recruiting guru in Blue Chips.

7) Leap of Fsith— A huckster faith healer (Steve Martin) is stranded with his entourage in a small Midwestern town that is going thru tough times financially, because of a drought. He decides to set up camp in the town for a few days and put on some shows to make money.

Liam Neeson is the town’s sheriff; Debra Winger, Meat Loaf and Philip Seymour Hoffman are part of his entourage.

6) Last Vegas— Four longtime friends take a break from their day-to-day lives to throw a bachelor party in Las Vegas for their last remaining bachelor friend. Morgan Freeman, Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas, Kevin Kline; tremendous cast. Mary Steenburgen is a singer in Binion’s Casino who becomes friends with the group.

5) A Star Is Born— A famous musician helps a young singer find fame/fortune as age and alcoholism ruin his own career; this is the fourth time this movie has been made.

Andrew Dice Clay adds to the movie as Lady Gaga’s father; the guitarist in Bradley Cooper’s band is Lukas Nelson, whose dad is Willie Nelson.

This Lady Gaga/Bradley Cooper version is very similar to the 1954 version, with Judy Garland, James Mason. The 1976 movie, with Barbra Streisand/Kris Kristofferson, was a lot different.

4) Rounders— A young gambler plays big stakes poker to help a friend pay off loan sharks, while balancing his relationship with his girlfriend and his commitments to law school. Every movie star who gambles in the movies comes out ahead, except for Mark Wahlberg in The Gambler, who is very grateful to wind up even.

3) Moneyball— Would be ranked higher if the A’s won at the end, or in the beginning; oh well. This is the story of how Oakland GM Billy Beane put together a baseball team on a small budget by using computer-generated analysis to evaluate players.

I was lucky enough to meet Michael Lewis, who wrote the book Moneyball, in 2004. Nice guy.

2) Blue Chips— A college basketball coach is forced to break the rules in order to get the players he needs to stay competitive; two of the players he recruits are played by Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardaway. Jerry Tarkanian/Dick Vitale/Jim Boeheim have cameos. Nick Nolte spent some time with the Indiana Hoosiers to prep for this role.

Basketball scenes were filmed in a high school gym in Indiana; they have some really nice high school gyms in Indiana.

1) American Underdog— What did you think I would have at #1? This is the story of Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner, who went from stocking shelves at a supermarket to becoming a football star, leading the Rams to a Super Bowl title.

Seriously, this movie was better than I thought it would be; it is a great story, but they avoided making the movie too sappy.
