Monday’s 6-pack
Over/under win totals for baseball:
65.5— Nationals
68.5— White Sox, Cardinals
70.5— Angels
72.5— Marlins
73.5— Twins
76.5— A’s

Quotes of the Day
“I think the seeding was absolutely atrocious.”
Utah State coach Jerrod Calhoun, on his Aggies being a #9-seed

Monday’s quiz
Hall of Fame basketball player David Thompson led NC State to the 1974 national title, then scored 13,422 points in a nine-year pro career, scoring 22.7 ppg. What team did he play most of his career with?

Sunday’s quiz
Most people know that Alaska is the 49th state, Hawai’i the 50th state, it turns out that Arizona is the 48th state.

Saturday’s quiz
In the old TV show The White Shadow, the coach of the Carver High basketball team had played in the NBA, for the Chicago Bulls.

*************************************************

Monday’s 2nd List: Quick thoughts after seeing the brackets…….

— Seven of the last nine years, a #1-seed won the national title.
Exceptions: Villanova (2016), UConn (2023)

— Last five years, #1-seeds are 11-9 ATS in the first round.
Last three years, #2-seeds are 8-4 ATS in the first round.
Last six years, #3-seeds are 16-8 ATS in the first round.
Last three years, #2-seeds are 8-4 ATS in the first round.

— Texas-NC State is a play-in game Tuesday.
November 26, Texas beat the Wolfpack 102-97 in Maui Classic.
Longhorns shot 16-32 on the arc in that game, scored 1.42 ppp
Wolfpack is 2-7 in its last nine games; little surprised they made the tournament.
Sean Miller is the Texas coach; his brother Archie played for NC State.

— Big East didn’t get much respect; three teams in the NCAA’s, with St John’s a #5-seed, and Villanova a #8-seed. Vllanova is a slight underdog against Utah State.

— Speaking of Utah State, this is the first time since 2017 the Mountain West only got one team in the NCAA’s, and they had the #6 league in the country this year.

— Miami OH had a 31-0 regular season, then lost in the first round of the MAC tournament. Redhawks got into the tournament; they’re a 7.5-point underdog to SMU in Wednesday’s main play-in game.

— LIU won the Northeast Conference; they’re a #16-seed that is playing Arizona. This is the first time since 2012 that the NEC champ hasn’t had to play in a play-in game.

— Miami FL can’t be real happy; they’ve had a very good season, are a #7-seed, but they got sent to St Louis, where they’ll play…….Missouri in the first round. No bueno.

— BYU has to play in a Thursday/Saturday bracket; BYU’s teams aren’t allowed to play on Sundays.

— All four #4-seeds are a double digit favorite in their first round games; the last time that happened was 1994.

— Since 2002, these are the times a #15-seed upset a #2-seed:
2012- Lehigh (+12) beat Duke 75-70
Norfolk State (+21) beat Missouri 86-84
2013- Florida Gulf Coast (+13) beat Georgetown 78-68
2016- Middle Tennessee (+18) beat Michigan State 90-81
2021- Oral Roberts (+16) beat Ohio State 75-72 in OT
2022- Saint Peter’s (+18) beat Kentucky 85-79 in OT
2023- Princeton (+16) beat Arizona 59-55
23 years, that’s 7 wins, 85 losses for the #15-seeds.

Those seven teams went 4-3 SU/ATS in their second round games.

— Last eight years, only two #14-seeds have upset a #3-seed:
2021- Abilene Christian (+8.5) 53, Texas 52
2024- Oakland (+12.5) 80, Kentucky 76

— Last three years, favorites are 7-2 ATS in Final Four games.

*****************************************************

2 Lists for Monday: List #1, Doing some thinking out loud…….

— I’ll be back later tonight, after I go thru the NCAA Tournament brackets for a while, but in the meantime, I’ll clean out my notebook and post some stuff. I usually get fidgety the couple hours before the brackets come out.

— Conference tournaments are fun and all, but a game like Purdue-Michigan, where both teams are already going to be high seeds in the NCAA Tournament, how much do the head coaches really care about winning a conference tournament?
Main thing is that no one gets hurt; the NCAA’s are what matters and your first game is going to be on Thursday or Friday.

— There shouldn’t be any college basketball games on Selection Sunday; everyone should just go home and rest and they should have the NBA, spring training and golf on TV all day.

— Modern basketball: 9 of St John’s 15 players are transfers, including all five starters; some teams just don’t recruit high school kids anymore, they oach good players from other schools.

— Speaking of Rick Pitino, when he was coaching Providence in late 80’s, he had some terrific assistant coaches. Jeff Van Gundy, Herb Sendek, Stu Jackson, Gordon Chiesa and he also had a point guard named Billy Donovan.

— WAC only had seven teams this year; their conference schedule was kind of unique, you play the other six teams three times each, so it is an 18-game conference schedule. When you play a team in the conference tournament, you are playing them for a fourth time in a season.

— Sunday is an unusually active TV night; all the bracket talk will be on, the US plays against the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, and the Academy Awards stuff is on TV. I’ll be listening to the baseball game while doing a night full of bracket research.

— Famous birthdays, March 16th:
Erik Estrada, 77
Kate Nelligan, 76
Ozzie Newsome, 70
Rodney Peete, 60
Steve Israel, 57
Todd Heap, 46
Curtis Granderson, 45
Blake Griffin, 37
Tim Hardaway Jr., 34
Joel Embiid, 32
Rowdy Tellez, 31
Vladimir Guerrero Jr., 27

— I don’t know what to think about the World Baseball Classic; it makes a lot of $$$, which is all the people who run it care about, and it probably helps grow the game globally, but if I owned a big league team, and a player I’m paying $20M a year was loudly saying how much he’d prefer to win this tournament than a World Series, that would make me queasy.

— Opening Day for baseball is mostly March 26th; there is one game on the 25th, but starting on Wednesday, all the teams will be back together and can get ready for the season.

— There are five baseball players who stole 40+ bases in a season, and didn’t hit a triple during that season. You’d think really fast guys would hit at least one triple:
1978, Miguel Dilone, A’s, 50 SB
1986, Mariano Duncan, Dodgers, 48
1985, Davey Lopes, Cubs, 47 (he was 40 years old)
1997, Rickey Henderson, A’s, 45 (he was 38 years old)
1988, Jose Canseco, A’s, 40

— Pitching coach for the Milwaukee Brewers is Chris Hook, an unfortunate name for a pitching coach, especially for a pitcher who might be struggling. “Oh….Hook is coming to the mound”

— I think it is weird when I watch TV, then get e-mails a day or two later asking me if I liked the shows/movies I was watching? Whose job is that?

— This winter was cruddy here in upstate New York, too darn cold. Got stuck inside so much, I’ve watched way too many podcasts about fantasy baseball, probably 12-15 mock drafts, and the fantasy league I’m in is a keeper league, so we don’t even draft, except a two-round draft for younger guys.

Will be fun when the NCAA Tournament starts this week, then the real baseball games start next week, and the weather outside gets better. Have already taken a couple of two-mile walks in my neighborhood on the few nice days we’ve had. My I-Phone tells me how how far I’ve walked, so that makes it more useful.

— Last week in Florida, there was an election for mayor, and the guy who won the election won by one vote. Imagine the guy who lost? That must’ve sucked.

— Jim Irsay owned the Indianapolis Colts for 28 years; he passed away about a year ago. He had an amazing collection of memorabilia that was recently put up for auction.

Thru Saturday, those auctions had raised $93,656,609; most of the stuff is music-related- he had an amazing collection of guitars used by famous musicians, but he also had the saddle used by jockey Ron Turcotte when he rode Secretariat to 1973 Triple Crown; it sold for $1.524M, and the jersey Wayne Gretzky wore when he scored his 500th NHL goal sold for $952,500.

Tuesday’s 6-pack
Over/under win totals for baseball:
83.5— Royals
82.5— Reds
81.5— Giants
79.5— Diamondbacks, Pirates
78.5— Guardians
77.5— Rays

Quotes of the Day
“It’s surreal to hear my name in that group, but I can tell you that one thing that bonds us all together — those names and mine — is talent. You can’t win in this league without great players, and I was blessed from the day I took this job with incredible talent.”
Steve Kerr, after winning his 600th game as an NBA coach

Tuesday’s quiz
In the movie Bull Durham, what well-known actor played the Bulls’ pitching coach?

Monday’s quiz
Hall of Fame basketball player David Thompson led NC State to the 1974 national title, then scored 13,422 points in a nine-year pro career, scoring 22.7 ppg. He played most of his career with the Denver Nuggets.

Sunday’s quiz
Most people know that Alaska is the 49th state, Hawai’i the 50th state, it turns out that Arizona is the 48th state.

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

— Was sleeping around 9:30am last week, heard a weird sound outside; was worried the plumbing under our street was having more problems, so I went to see what was going on.
Instead, some guy was hammering a “For Sale” sign into my next door neighbor’s lawn; this was Wednesday, they were having an Open House on Saturday.
But the Open House never happened; apparently the house was sold on Friday, so I‘ll be getting new neighbors soon.

— When you fill out your brackets, don’t advance Alabama very far; Aden Holloway, their #2 scorer was thrown off the team after he was charged with first-degree possession of marijuana-not for personal use, which is a Class C felony, and failure to affix a tax stamp, also a felony.
Distractions are a huge red flag this time of year; Alabama plays tempo #4; over half the shots they take are 3’s, and Holloway was shooting 43.8% on the arc. Not good.

— Hofstra-Alabama is Friday in Tampa; Hofstra is 24-10, with no losses by more than 8 points. Crimson Tide is favored by 11.5 points.

— Saint Louis-Georgia is a matchup of teams who both like to run; Billikens play tempo #21, Georgia tempo #16. Total on this game Thursday night is a hefty 169.5.

— Nebraska is favored by 13 points in its first round game vs Troy; in its history, Cornhuskers are 0-8 in NCAA Tournament games, though they did win the Crown Tournament in Las Vegas last year.

— Seton Hall went 21-12 this year but missed out on the NCAA’s; they turned down a bid to the NIT, after winning the NIT two years ago.

— Butler coach Thad Matta retired this week, ending a 21-year career as a head coach. Matta was 502-223 in his career, making the Final Four twice with Ohio State.

Famous birthdays, March 17th:
Cito Gaston, 82
Kurt Russell, 75
Gary Sinise, 71
Danny Ainge, 67
Sam Bowie, 65
Rob Lowe, 62
John Smiley, 61
Juan Lagares, 37
Cordarrelle Patterson, 35
Rhys Hoskins, 33

— Team USA 2, Dominican Republic 1
Gunnar Henderson, Roman Anthony homered for Team USA.
Five relievers got the last 14 outs, didn’t allow a run.
Junior Caminero homered for the Dominican Republic

— Venezuela 4, Italy 2
Venezuela scored three runs in 7th inning to advance to Tuesday’s final.
Venezuela’s bullpen got 23 outs, allowed only five baserunners, no runs.
Team USA-Venezuela play for the championship Tuesday night.

— The way the US-Dominican Republic game ended Sunday night will influence how teams deal with the ABS ball/strike challenge system. Game ended on an awful called strike 3 when the DR had men on base. Had the challenge system existed in the WBC, this called would’ve definitely been overturned.

Teams have to save one of their challenges for the late innings, just for stuff like this; if you lose a challenge early in the game, then you bite the bullet until the late innings, just so you don’t get hosed like Geraldo Perdomo did to end Sunday’s game.

— New Jersey Jets traded QB Justin Fields to Kansas City; in exchange they’re getting a 6th round pick in the 2027 draft. Star QB Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL in Week 15 last year; it is unclear whether he’ll be ready to go when training camp starts.
Fields is 16-37 as an NFL starter, playing for three teams in his five seasons. Gardner Minshew was the Chiefs’ backup QB, but he recently bolted to the Cardinals.

— Sounds like the NBA is going to expand in a couple years, with Seattle/Las Vegas the leading candidates to be where the expansion teams land. Heard a few years ago that when they put a team in Las Vegas, Lebron James will be part of the ownership group.

— Warriors 125, Wizards 117
Steve Kerr won his 600th game as a coach in his 943rd game, the 4th-fastest of any coach who has won 600+ games.

— I think the Selection Committee did an excellent job of picking the right 68 teams for the NCAA Tournament, but these are the four highest-rated teams that got left out.
Auburn, Cincinnati, Indiana, Oklahoma.

— NIT starts tonight; I would advise against wagering on first round NIT games, since it is tough to tell which teams are invested in extending their seasons. If you watch the first round games, you can get a better idea of who cares/who doesn’t.
