3 keys to the game for Ottawa, Saskatchewan in Week 1

REGINA — The off-season is over, preseason games are complete and now it starts to count.

An intriguing matchup opens the 2025 Canadian Football League campaign as the Ottawa REDBLACKS pay a visit to Mosaic Stadium for a date with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Last season represented a step in the right direction for the REDBLACKS as they improved on their four-win 2023 by posting a 9-8-1 record before eventually falling to Toronto in the Eastern Semi-Final.

The Roughriders will look to build on the momentum of a positive season that saw them also finish with a 9-8-1 record, good for second in the West Division. They followed it up with a win over the BC Lions in the Western Semi-Final before dropping the Western Final to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

With kickoff just around the corner, here’s three keys to victory for both teams:

OTTAWA REDBLACKS

1. DRU BROWN’S ENCORE

After three seasons as a backup in Winnipeg, quarterback Dru Brown finally got his chance to be the main man under centre a year ago. And he didn’t disappoint, completing 312 passes for 3,959 yards and 18 touchdowns in 17 games. So, what’s he have in store for year two? It starts with being on the lookout for defensive back Rolan Milligan Jr. who intercepted eight passes last season.

2. WILLIAM STANBACK’S NEXT STOP

The REDBLACKS signed William Stanback in hopes of an upgrade at running back alongside Daniel Adeboboye. Stanback finished second behind league leader Brady Oliveira a season ago with 1,175 yards and head coach Bob Dyce will surely turn to the fifth year rusher to take pressure off the pass game and diversify his offensive scheme.

3. PRESSURE IN THE POCKET

Defensive linemen Michael Wakefield and Lorenzo Mauldin IV were among the best at getting to opposing quarterbacks when they tied for the league lead with eight sacks. Facing a Riders team that has no problem going to the ground with running back AJ Ouellette, closing gaps and forcing pressure will be critical.

SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS

1. LUCKY NO. 13 FOR TREVOR HARRIS?

Quarterback Trevor Harris has aged like a fine wine. The 39-year-old enters his 13th Canadian Football League season having averaged 9.1 yards per pass over 260 completions in 2024. The mark was the third best of his career, behind only 2013 (11.7) and 2016 (10.0).

2. SPEAKING OF AJ OUELLETTE

One way to help Harris is to hand the ball to Ouellette, which head coach Corey Mace did 130 times last season. Staying healthy is key for the Covington, Ohio native as he battled hip issues and suited up in just eight games a year ago. The front he’ll face Friday night is known to be aggressive, so he’ll be tested right out of the gate.

3. YOUNG RECEIVERS BACK FOR MORE

KeeSean Johnson, Dohnte Meyers and Dhel Duncan-Busby all got their first taste of CFL football and now it’s time to see what they can do with more responsibility in their second year. Johnson led the group by putting up an impressive 746 yards as a rookie. If Harris opts for more familiarity, he can turn the way of Samuel Emilus who’s looking for his third straight 1,000-plus yard season.

NEED TO KNOW

  • Ottawa will be without defensive back Justin Howell and receiver Nick Mardner due to foot and knee injuries.
  • Receiver Shawn Bane Jr. is out, while linebacker C.J. Avery is a game-time-decision for Saskatchewan.
  • The Riders were 1-0-1 against the REDBLACKS in 2024, tying 22-22 in Week 10 and coming away victorious, 29-16, in Week 17.
  • Kickoff is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. ET.

Adams not taking anything for granted ahead of Stamps’ opener

Before the question was even finished, Calgary Stampeders quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. smiled and shook his head.

“Last year, I was in the same spot,” he said. “I don’t feel any different [this year]. I’m still earning my spot, earning my paycheque, coming in early, staying late, doing what I need to do to hopefully be successful on game day.”

Adams, of course, was referring to opening the 2024 season as the undisputed starting quarterback of the BC Lions. Adams was putting together a Most Outstanding Player-type season for the Lions, but injured his knee in early August.

Calgary hosts the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. MT on TSN 1, 3, and 4.

Nathan Rourke, who returned from the NFL that same month, took over the starting job, and Adams was traded to the Stamps for the ninth and 29th selections in the 2025 CFL Draft and their 2026 second-round pick soon after the season concluded.

Prior to his injury, Adams had thrown for 14 touchdowns, six interceptions, and nearly 2,500 yards, leading BC to a 5-2 record before he hurt his knee in their Aug. 1 game in Winnipeg. BC went 4-7 the rest of the way, losing their lone playoff game.

He admitted after the season ended that he was crushed by the Lions’ decision to go with Rourke.

It wasn’t the first time Adams had been overlooked. In 2021 as the Montreal Alouettes starter, he passed for nearly 2,000 yards but was injured midway through the campaign. The team acquired veteran Trevor Harris, who replaced Adams as the full-time starter the following season. He also had previous stints in Saskatchewan and Hamilton.

Now under centre for a franchise trying to redefine its identity, Adams, 32, brings not only a skill set as a dual-threat quarterback, but the hard-won experience of someone who’s been doubted more than once.

“You have to be resilient,” he said. “The media, teammates, organizations – they’ll always turn on you, but your family won’t. At the end of the day, that’s all that matters to me. My kids, my family. I don’t really care what you say, what anyone says. Anybody, honestly. Coaches, GMs. Anybody.”

Adams leaned on his faith during those uncertain stretches of his career. He also gained a new perspective on his CFL quarterback journey. Early on, he admitted, he might have taken to social media to vent his frustrations. Now?

“I could be at home doing something else and not getting paid to play,” he said. “There were times I got benched and I was making $400,000. What am I going to complain about?”

Calgary receiver Dominique Rhymes was with Adams in BC. He frequently uses the word “brother” when describing their bond.

“It’s the complexity of the league,” he said of Adams’ circuitous route to Calgary. “The thing about Vernon [is] he shrugs it off. He keeps playing. He keeps making big plays…we’re excited to have him as our quarterback.”

Receiver Reggie Begelton has been with the Stamps since 2017. He’s seen the likes of Bo Levi Mitchell and Jake Maier command the Calgary offence. Begelton said Adams leads, in part, by empowering those around him. He’ll sometimes push a rookie or softer-spoken player to speak up in the huddle.

“He puts people out of their comfort zones and allows them to speak as well,” he said. “He calls them out to see what you’re going to do…after warmups, it’s not just the same guys speaking before practice. He’ll call somebody out and say, ‘Hey, what are you going to say?’ It makes everybody one.”

Adams frequently stays on the field after practice concludes to interact with everyone in all facets of the team. On Instagram, he shouts out the defence and special teams. Adams said it’s important to involve backups and practice squad players because they’re one play away from being in the spotlight. He knows firsthand.

“You’ve just got to stay prepared and ready all the time,” Adams said.

He feels he’s adjusted well to a new city and playbook.

“We’ve still got to find out our identity and who we are after we play a game, and keep going one week at a time,” he said. “I feel like we had a pretty good camp as a team. We gelled pretty well.”

Head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson often talks about authentic leadership and has been impressed with Adams.

“I don’t need fancy plays, but do what’s required to win, and he’s done that in his career,” Dickenson said.

Dickenson made several changes to a roster that finished 5-12-1 last year and missed the playoffs for the first time in two decades. There are several new starters on defence, including defensive lineman Folarin Orimolade, who Calgary re-acquired in a deal with the Argonauts for linebacker Cameron Judge.

Dickenson emphasized that Adams is one of 12 players on the field, but that he’ll set the tone for those around him.

“He finds ways to win ball games, even when sometimes he doesn’t have his best stuff,” Dickenson said. “You’ve got to make sure everyone knows we’re rowing in the same direction and we’re all here for the right reasons. His energy is contagious though; there’s no doubt about it.”

Adams is embodying that role early in his Stampeders’ tenure – and not taking his position for granted.

“That’s all I want to do,” Adams said, “is show that I can be the guy and lead the team to wins.”

New-look Argonauts ready to kick off season in Montreal on TSN

TORONTO - The Toronto Argonauts squad head coach Ryan Dinwiddie led to a 2024 Grey Cup win will be vastly different than the one tasked with defending the title.

Toronto visits the Montreal Alouettes on Friday in the season opener for both teams. But the Argos will be minus seven defensive starters, along with quarterback Chad Kelly and rushing leader Ka'Deem Carey.

"I see a new group coming together and building its identity," Dinwiddie said. "I feel like the new pieces really fit in well and even the young rookies fit into the culture and understand what it is.

"I think we're definitely capable of being a playoff team and making a run at the end, but we've obviously got to prove that."

Watch every CFL game LIVE on TSN, TSN.ca and the TSN App.(opens in a new tab)

Defensive linemen Jake Ceresna and Robbie Smith (both in Edmonton), Ralph Holley (Cleveland, NFL) and Folarin Orimolade (trade, Calgary), linebacker Tunde Adeleke (Ottawa, then retired) and defensive backs Royce Metchie (Edmonton) and DaShaun Amos (Hamilton) are all gone. Ditto for Carey, who was released last weekend after rushing for 1,060 yards and seven TDs last season, his first with Toronto.

For the second straight year, Toronto is opening the season with Kelly, the CFL's 2023 outstanding player. Kelly, 31, suffered a fractured tibia and fibula in last year's 30-28 East Division final win over Montreal that required surgery and was only cleared to practise late last week.

Veteran Nick Arbuckle will start in Montreal. Arbuckle got the nod for Toronto's Grey Cup showdown versus Winnipeg, passing for 252 yards and two TDs in securing MVP honours in the Argos' 41-24 victory.

Last season, Kelly missed the entire exhibition campaign and Toronto's first nine regular-season contests after being suspended by the CFL for violating its gender-based violence policy. The Argos went 5-4 under Cam Dukes (4-4) and Arbuckle (1-0) before Kelly was reinstated and finished with a 10-8 record to stand second in the East Division.

Toronto also released Dukes last weekend.

Arbuckle will have a veteran receiving corps with DaVaris Daniels, Damonte Coxie, Dejon Brissett (top Canadian in Grey Cup) and David Ungerer III. But Makai Polk (61 catches, 1,024 yards, five TDs) is now an Atlanta Falcon.

Deonta McMahon (288 rushing yards, six-yard average, 30 catches, 237 yards, TD) replaces Carey at halfback.

The offensive line will again be solid, anchored by Canadian tackle Ryan Hunter, the CFL's top lineman last year, who moves to the right side this season. Towering Sage Doxtater (6-7, 343 pounds) starts at left guard after joining the Argos late last season.

Sophomore defensive end Derek Parish (six sacks last season) starts on the defensive line, Veteran Anthony Lanier II (free agent, Saskatchewan) and rookie Jeremiah Ojo ('25 first-round pick) should both get chances to play.

Veteran middle linebacker Wynton McManis returns and will be flanked by Canadian Cam Judge (trade, Calgary). And although Amos and Metchie are gone, cornerbacks Tarvarus McFadden and Beniie Franklin and halfback Mark Milton remain in the secondary.

Veteran kicker Lirim Hajrullahu and punter John Haggerty are also back. The return game is handled capably by Janarion Grant, the CFL's top special-teams player last season, who will miss the season opener due to injury.

"Our guys all know what the expectation is," Dinwiddie said. "I don't care how many guys are new or how many guys we've lost, no one cares about that.

"We've got to understand it's going to be a tough season, we're going to have some ups and downs just like you always do. It's a new chapter, a new season, and now we've got to go earn it."

Since 2022, Toronto is 7-2 versus Montreal in the regular season but Montreal holds the overall edge (112-99-3). Dinwiddie, entering his fifth season as Argos head coach, is 26-10 versus division rivals.

Montreal head coach Jason Maas is 13-5 within the East Division.

2024 record: 10-8, second, East Division.

Did you know?: Toronto's affable GM Mike (Pinball) Clemons is 8-0 in the Grey Cup as a player, coach and administrator since joining the franchise in 1989.

Key additions: DL Antony Lanier Lanier II (Saskatchewan), LB Cameron Judge (Calgary).

Key losses: DLs Jake Ceresna (Edmonton), Robbie Smith (Edmonton), Ralph Holley (Cleveland, NFL), Folarin Orimolade (Calgary) and Jared Brinkman (Edmonton), DBs DaShaun Amos (Hamilton) and Royce Metchie (Edmonton), linebacker Tunde Adeleke (Ottawa, then retired), WR Makai Polk (Atlanta, NFL), RB Ka'Deem Carey (released) and QB Cam Dukes (released).

Players to watch: RB Deonta McMahon, WRs DaVaris Daniels, Damonte Coxie and Dejon Brissett, LB Wynton McManis, KR-WR Janarion Grant, K Lirim Hajrullahu.

Elks-Lions game features first CFL opening-week meeting of Canadian quarterbacks

It will be a historic CFL first Saturday night in Vancouver.

The B.C. Lions will host the Edmonton Elks at B.C. Place in the season opener for both teams. This will mark the first opening week featuring two Canadian starting quarterbacks (B.C.'s Nathan Rourke, Edmonton's Tre Ford) since 1968 and the first time it's occurred in the same game.

The 2025 season will kick off Thursday night with the Ottawa Redblacks visiting the Saskatchewan Roughriders. On Friday night, the Toronto Argonauts begin their Grey Cup defence in Montreal versus the Alouettes before the Calgary Stampeders entertain the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday night.

Also of note in Vancouver, B.C.'s Buck Pierce and Edmonton's Mark Kilam will make their CFL head-coaching debuts.

Rourke, 27, of Victoria, rejoined the Lions last season following NFL stints with Jacksonville, New England, the New York Giants and Atlanta. He was the league's top Canadian in 2022 with B.C.

Ford, also 27, was Edmonton's '22 first-round pick out of Waterloo. The Hec Crighton Trophy winner from Niagara Falls, Ont., was 9-9 in 18 starts over the last three years before signing an extension with the CFL club this off-season.

Ford and Kilam are looking to lead Edmonton to the CFL playoffs for the first time since 2019. Pierce joined the Lions following 10 seasons as an assistant with Winnipeg, helping the Bombers make five straight Grey Cup appearances, winning in 2019 and '21.

Some other season-opening facts:

— The overwhelming majority of players on CFL rosters are veterans. According to the league, just 67 of the 493 total players on teams are in their first year (13.6 per cent) compared to 93 at this time last year.

— Players have an average of 41 games (2 1/2 seasons) of CFL experience and 22 starts.

— The average age in the CFL is 28.2 years.

Ottawa Redblacks versus Saskatchewan Roughriders (Thursday night)

At Regina, the Redblacks struggled mightily on the road last season, posting a 2-7-0 record. But they were 6-3-1 versus West Division rivals. Dru Brown begins his second full season as Ottawa's starter and will have veteran receiver Eugene Lewis available. Lewis finished last season with touchdown catches in Edmonton's final eight games, leaving him two short of Terry Evanshen's league record. Veteran Trevor Harris gets the start for Saskatchewan, which is looking to improve upon last year's 5-4 home record and 4-3 mark versus East rivals.

Pick: Saskatchewan.

---

Toronto Argonauts versus Montreal Alouettes (Friday night)

At Montreal, Davis Alexander begins his first full season as the Alouettes' starting quarterback. He was an impressive 4-0 last year while incumbent Cody Fajardo — who's now in Edmonton — was injured. Veteran Nick Arbuckle, last year's Grey Cup MVP, starts for the new-look Argos, who begin their title defence without many of the faces that played prominent roles in last year's championship. Chad Kelly, the CFL's '23 outstanding player, continues to recover from the serious leg injury he sustained in last year's East Division final.

Pick: Montreal.

---

Hamilton Tiger-Cats versus Calgary Stampeders (Saturday night)

At Calgary, Hamilton starter Bo Levi Mitchell chases his first regular-season win at McMahon Stadium, where he played so many years with the Stampeders. A victory would be Mitchell's 100th in the CFL and come in his 141st career start, making him the fastest player in league history to achieve the milestone. Veteran Vernon Adams Jr. makes his first debut with the Stampeders, who are looking to return to the CFL playoffs after missing out last year for the first time since '04.

Pick: Hamilton.

---

Edmonton Elks versus B.C. Lions (Saturday night)

At Vancouver, no one was busier this off-season than Edmonton general manager Ed Hervey, who added the likes of defensive linemen Jake Ceresna and Robbie Smith, defensive backs Royce Metchie and Tyrell Ford and offensive lineman David Beard. Conventional thinking suggests it will take time for the Elks to mesh. Both starting quarterbacks are athletic and dual threats. This one could be close, so the edge should go to the home team, especially with veteran kicker Sean Whyte.

Pick: B.C.
