Weekly Predictor: Who wins in Week 12?​

At the midpoint of the CFL season, it’s a tale of two divisions.

Last week was the perfect storm, as the West went 4-0, and you don’t need to be a mathematician to know how the East Division fared.

Out West, the Riders are humming with Trevor Harris leading the league in efficiency. BC Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke is rounding into form. Cody Fajardo has the Elks moving up the AMSOIL Power Rankings. The Bombers are staring down the Stamps for second spot in the division. Calgary comes off a bye week with the second-best record in the CFL.

Out East, three of the four teams are not playing with their franchise quarterbacks, and the Tiger-Cats are licking their wounds after getting dumped by the Riders in Regina.

Three of four games this week are once again East vs. West, although this time the games are in the East rather than all four last week being hosted by the West Division.

But will home field make a difference…?

WINNIPEG AT MONTREAL​

Thursday, August 21

I’ll be honest. It’s tough to watch the Alouettes’ injuries pile up at quarterback. There is no way to think a team is going to find much success when it’s down to the fourth-string quarterback.

Though it was impressive to watch James Morgan rally a bit in Vancouver until Nathan Rourke and the Lions pulled away.

To make matters worse, the Alouettes have an extremely short week of prep to get set for this clash against the Bombers. Montreal will have one full practice and then it’s game day on Thursday.

Winnipeg nearly blew it against the REDBLACKS, but held on. Over the last five weeks, Brady Oliveira is second in rushing behind only James Butler of the BC Lions. As the Bombers find their run game, they’ll find more of their identity from their success over the last five seasons.

EDMONTON AT OTTAWA​

The Dru Brown news to start the week was optimistic. He did not practice on Monday and head coach Bob Dyce said he’s unlikely to play this week, but doesn’t expect it to be a long-term injury. Dustin Crum, who nearly pulled off the unbelievable comeback, looks like he’ll get another start this season for Ottawa with Brown likely unable to play.

The stats don’t lie for Ottawa. Their efficiency on offence jumps up considerably when Dru Brown is at quarterback.

A few weeks ago I would still believe Ottawa wins this game but that was before Cody Fajardo was named starter for Edmonton.

Since that time, the Elks are 2-2 and their two losses came down to the final few minutes, including what would have been a game-winning touchdown that was dropped in the end zone.

Yes, Fajardo is doing a fantastic job running the offence, but what isn’t being talked about enough is the improved play on defence. The Elks still do sit near the bottom of defensive categories, but their numbers are improving. When it comes to opponents’ second down conversion rate, the Elks have seen the second-best improvement in the league since Week 6, trailing only the Roughriders defence.

These are all good signs on what could be turning into a second half surge by the Elks.

BC AT TORONTO​

I don’t blame Ryan Dinwiddie for being at his wits’ end with his football team. When you look at a lot of the key stats offensively, you’d think the Argonauts would be right in the mix.

Then you swing over the defence and you see where things slip away for the Argonauts late in games. They just can’t make a key stop at a key time.

The Lions are coming in on a two-game win streak where Nathan Rourke has thrown for 790 yards and six touchdowns over those games.

If you were waiting for 2022 Rourke to show up, your wait is over.

To make matters worse for opposing defences, the Lions also have the league’s leading rusher in James Butler and the league’s leading receiver in Keon Hatcher Sr.

That’s quite the triple threat for a struggling Argonauts defence to try to slow down.

SASKATCHEWAN AT CALGARY​

The Calgary Stampeders are the only team to beat the Roughriders this season as the game of the week will be the Week 12 finale on Saturday evening.

The Stamps went into Mosaic Stadium back in Week 6 and physically outdueled the hometown Riders.

Calgary can come in with some confidence knowing they can beat the 8-1 Roughriders.

However, there is one issue.

Since that game, the Roughriders have been dominant, including back-to-back 20+ point victories. They took that loss personally and it won’t be hard for the Riders to find motivation with the loss to the Stamps fresh in their minds.

It’ll be interesting to see how healthy the Stampeders exit their bye week after several injuries to their receiving corps over the last few weeks. The more firepower, the better against the league’s best defence over the last month.

3 keys to victory for Winnipeg, Montreal in Week 12​


MONTREAL — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers visit the Montreal Alouettes at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium on Thursday night as Week 12 gets underway.

Winnipeg can move into a tie with the Calgary Stampeders, who play on Saturday night, for second in the West Division with a victory.

Montreal has stumbled of late, dropping three straight. James Morgan, who gets the start this week, will look to turn that around.

Here’s three keys to victory for both teams ahead of Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff, which can be watched on TSN and RDS in Canada, on CBSSN in the U.S., and CFL+ internationally.

WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS​

1. ZACH COLLAROS

Quarterback Zach Collaros threw for 298 yards in the Blue Bombers’ win over Ottawa last week, his second-highest total of the season. Going up against an Als defence that allowed four passing touchdowns to Nathan Rourke and the BC Lions in Week 11, Collaros will look to strike against a struggling secondary.

2. TAKING CARE OF THE BALL

It’s surely a tired narrative they’d like to shake, but the Bombers continue to struggle in the turnover department. Two more Collaros interceptions against Ottawa and a -11 ratio is cause for concern. Montreal has nine interceptions as a team, led by Kabion Ento’s three.

3. THE SECONDARY

The Als are dealing with a rash of injuries at quarterback, creating an opportunity for Winnipeg’s secondary to apply pressure and overwhelm their pass game. Keeping their receivers under wraps is the focus of Evan Holm, Redha Kramdi and Deatrick Nichols.

MONTREAL ALOUETTES​

1. ANOTHER QUARTERBACK

Montreal is turning to its fourth quarterback this season after Caleb Evans became the latest to hit the injured list. It’s James Morgan’s opportunity to take the pocket, and he’ll do so with 20 completions and 211 passing yards on his CFL resume, all of which came in relief of Evans against the Lions.

2. TYLER SNEAD RISING STAR?

Receiver Tyler Snead sits 99 receiving yards shy of a career high, an attainable total this week with how he’s been playing. Without Austin Mack and Tyson Philpot for at least another week, Snead will find himself as a top target once again.

3. THE DEFENCE

They may be coming off a tough outing, but the Als’ defence is capable of shutting down the best in the league. Linebacker Tyrice Beverette, who had an interception and a sack versus BC, is a critical piece that has to help get the offence back on the field so they can get into a rhythm.

NEED TO KNOW:​

  • Winnipeg and Montreal will meet once more in the regular season in Week 21.
  • Alouettes running back Sean Thomas Erlington is a game-time decision due to a neck injury. He missed the Als’ Week 11 game in Vancouver.
  • The Blue Bombers are 1-3 on the road, while the Alouettes are 2-3 at home.
  • Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, and can be watched on TSN and RDS in Canada, on CBSSN in the U.S., and CFL+ internationally.

Dru Brown out for REDBLACKS vs. Elks; Dustin Crum to start​


OTTAWA — The Ottawa REDBLACKS won’t have pivot Dru Brown for their matchup against the Edmonton Elks on Friday.

The team announced via injury report that the quarterback is out for the game with a knee injury.

Brown was injured in the team’s Week 11 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and was replaced by quarterback Dustin Crum.

Overall Brown has completed 152 of 209 passes for 1,842 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions in his second season with the REDBLACKS. Crum, meanwhile, is in his third season with Ottawa and has thrown for 625 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in 2025, alongside 199 yards and six majors on the ground.

The team announced via depth chart that Crum will get the starting nod in Week 12. Ottawa is preparing to host the Elks on Friday, August 22, at TD Place Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and can be watched on TSN and RDS in Canada. International and U.S. audiences can watch on CFL+.

3 keys to victory for Edmonton, Ottawa in Week 12​


OTTAWA — Don’t look now, but the Edmonton Elks are coming on.

They’ll try to make it three wins in a row when they travel to TD Place for a date with the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Friday Night Football.

Back-to-back victories over Montreal and Toronto have the Elks pulling closer to BC and Winnipeg in the West Division.

Ottawa, on the other hand, is aiming to win three of its last four.

Here’s three keys to victory for both teams ahead of Friday’s 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff, which can be watched on TSN and RDS in Canada, and on CFL+ in the U.S. and internationally.

EDMONTON ELKS​

1. JUSTIN RANKIN IS ROLLIN’

Running back Justin Rankin did it all in Week 11, pulling down 92 yards through the air and amassing 87 more on the ground in their win over Toronto. The last time these two met, a 39-33 Elks win in Week 5, he was just as effective, putting up 69 receiving and 105 rushing yards.

2. CODY FAJARDO COMING THROUGH

Quarterback Cody Fajardo is giving his team a chance to win, which is all head coach Mark Kilam can ask. He’ll face a REDBLACKS secondary that sits fifth in average passing yards against per game and one that didn’t see him the first time around. Fajardo’s ability to find his receivers and Rankin being a dual threat creates unpredictability for Ottawa’s defence.

3. KEEP IT CLOSE

The Elks’ two losses before their most recent wins were by a combined seven points. It shows they’re staying in the game and giving themselves an opportunity to come away victorious, a position they’ll look to put themselves in again on Friday.

OTTAWA REDBLACKS​

1. HERE COMES DUSTIN CRUM

Starting quarterback Dru Brown is out with a knee injury, a tough blow for Ottawa’s offence. Head coach Bob Dyce will go back to Dustin Crum, who was impressive in relief against the Blue Bombers last week, completing 11 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown.

2. DANIEL ADEBOBOYE AND WILLIAM STANBACK

No Brown likely means more looks for the REDBLACKS running backs. Daniel Adeboboye and William Stanback have combined for 725 yards this season and put up 39 and 38 yards the last time these teams squared off.

3. LINEBACKERS ON GUARD

Given the Elks’ multiple threats on offence, the linebacker core — led by veterans Jovan Santos-Knox and Adarius Pickett — has to be ready to make an impact. Santos-Knox has 47 tackles, while Pickett has 63 and an interception.

NEED TO KNOW:​

  • Edmonton is 1-3 on the road and Ottawa is 1-3 at home.
  • This is the final regular season meeting between the Elks and REDBLACKS.

3 keys to victory for BC, Toronto in Week 12​


TORONTO — The BC Lions will try to make it three straight victories over East Division opponents when they take on the Toronto Argonauts at BMO Field on Saturday afternoon.

Back-to-back wins over Hamilton and Montreal have the Lions sitting at 5-5 and bearing down on the second-place Calgary Stampeders.

Toronto has dropped three straight.

Here’s three keys to victory for both teams ahead of Saturday’s 3:00 p.m. ET kickoff, which can be watched on TSN and CTV in Canada and on CFL+ in the U.S. and internationally.

BC LIONS​

1. NATHAN ROURKE ON A ROLL

Nathan Rourke has been as good as they come over the last six weeks, averaging 352.2 yards per game through the air. There’s a chance he reaches the 3,000-yard mark, as he needs 314, although the Argonauts’ secondary, which ranks second in passing yards allowed, may have something to say about it.

2. THE LEGS OF JAMES BUTLER, THE HANDS OF KEON HATCHER

If head coach Buck Pierce believes in momentum and confidence, he’ll continue to turn to receiver Keon Hatcher Sr. and running back James Butler. Butler led the league entering play this week with 765 rushing yards, and Hatcher Sr. caught all 11 passes thrown his way for 156 yards and two touchdowns versus Montreal.

3. DEFENCE MAKING A DIFFERENCE

The Lions had scored the most points of any team in the West Division and the third most overall with 273 after Week 11, but they’ve also allowed 272. Since the Argos have found their offensive success primarily in the pass game, watch for defensive back Ronald Kent Jr. downfield and linebacker Micah Awe patrolling the middle of the field to make a difference.


TORONTO ARGONAUTS​

1. NICK ARBUCKLE AIRING IT OUT

Look up, the balls are likely to be in the air. The Argos’ first-half struggles certainly can’t be pinned on quarterback Nick Arbuckle, but any chance of the team digging their way out relies on him. Bringing 3,033 yards and 17 touchdowns into the game, don’t expect Arbuckle to back down from a Lions secondary holding opposing teams to a league-best 242.3 passing yards per game.

2. THEIR OWN SECONDARY

Was there mention of the pass games yet? The only defence that bested the Argos’ 265.6 average passing yards allowed after 11 weeks was the Lions’. Defensive back Tarvarus McFadden is tied for second in the league with three interceptions.

3. FILLING GAPS UP FRONT

Linebackers Cameron Judge and Wynton McManis should play a key role in closing gaps up front and limiting the impact of Butler. If they can get to the quarterback, which the Argos have done 22 times this season, all the better for head coach Ryan Dinwiddie’s club.
