Weekly Predictor: Who wins in Week 21?

The final week of the regular season is going to be very interesting.

While all six playoff teams have clinched, only one team enters the final week of the season knowing exactly what is ahead: Saskatchewan will host the Western Final.

Montreal and Hamilton both know they will host a playoff game, but it’s undecided which team will host the Eastern Final and Eastern Semi-Final.

Out west, if you want to run through all the playoff scenarios to decide which team finishes second or third, and which team crosses over to the east, you’re a braver soul than I am.

All I know is that the picture becomes clearer as the dominoes fall, but it could very well come down to the BC/Saskatchewan game on Saturday in the regular season finale before we know exactly what the bracket is going to look like.

OTTAWA AT HAMILTON

Friday, October 24
7:00 p.m. ET
TSN/RDS/CFL+

Hamilton knows that if they win on Friday, they clinch first place in the East. While Hamilton shares the same record as the Alouettes entering the final week, the Tiger-Cats won both games over the Alouettes this season.

Ottawa, meanwhile, plays out the season riding a five-game losing streak into its visit to Hamilton Stadium.

The Tiger-Cats should be focused and ready to polish off top spot in the division for the first time since 2019.

However, Hamilton has shown some blemishes recently. The Tiger-Cats have two blowout losses in their last three games, losing by 17 two weeks ago and 37 points four weeks ago.

Coming off a bye week, Hamilton will likely tinker with some personnel and schemes to look a lot sharper heading into the playoffs.

Who knows what Ottawa is going to throw at them in their final regular season game. You know they’ll come wanting to end the season by playing spoiler, but it’s rare to see a team already out of the playoffs be able to do that against a home team hungry for a win.

PICK: HAMILTON

CALGARY AT EDMONTON

Friday, October 24
9:30 p.m. ET
TSN/CFL+

The Edmonton Elks saw their playoff hopes fade away in Vancouver as the BC Lions were impressive in the second half to pull away from the feisty Elks.

This is another game you’ll be left to guess on how the Elks will respond at home knowing that they’ll be cleaning out their lockers the next day for the off-season.

Calgary, however, has awakened! The Stampeders looked like a team that had a strong start and were fading fast. But with two dominant wins over the Tiger-Cats and Argonauts, the Stampeders are looking to carry that momentum into a critical game against Edmonton.

The Stampeders need a win to clinch a spot on the West side of the bracket. A win combined with a BC loss can also give the Stamps the right to host the Western Semi-Final next week. (Editor’s note: As of this writing, the CFL is still looking at each scenario carefully, and will release the full, official Playoff Scenarios later in the week to confirm each team’s path to the post-season.)

Dedrick Mills looked like a man possessed against Toronto last week, while Vernon Adams Jr. didn’t have to do too much through the air to get the win, despite his three TD passes.

But the biggest area that we’ve seen the Stampeders improve in has been their defence. They are looking like the group that we saw come out at the start of the season and put the rest of the league on notice.

Edmonton will keep this close early, but we’ll see what type of roster Mark Kilam will go with to wrap up his first season with the Elks.

PICK: CALGARY

MONTREAL AT WINNIPEG

Saturday, October 25
3:00 p.m. ET
TSN/RDS/CTV/CFL+

The Alouettes will be watching in their hotel rooms as I predict the Tiger-Cats will clinch the division.

Then what does Jason Maas do? The Alouettes will have to declare their depth chart before knowing the outcome of the Tiger-Cats and REDBLACKS game, but will they fly some practice roster players with the team and possibly switch things up, like we saw the Roughriders do last year, when their game went from very meaningful to meaningless?

With the amount of hits that Davis Alexander has taken, I don’t see a reason the Alouettes would want Alexander out there for much of the game, if at all.

Now, if Ottawa shocks the CFL on Friday, all of these points are moot, and the Als will have something to play for.

Winnipeg still has an outside shot at staying in the West and avoiding the impossible task of trying to win two road games out East.

And if you’re a fan who believes the ‘easiest’ road to the Grey Cup for Calgary, BC and Winnipeg is to crossover, go check out your CFL history.

No team has made it to the Grey Cup as a crossover team. However, third in the division has made it multiple occasions.

The Bombers are mad. All reports indicate after last week’s win the locker room felt like a loss. I wouldn’t want to be the team who plays an angry Bombers squad with Brady Oliveira needing the ball more and Willie Jefferson coming for my quarterback.

My prediction rests at the hands of the Tiger-Cats. A Tabbies win and I’m picking Winnipeg. Hamilton loses and I’m all in on the Als.

PICK: WINNIPEG

BC AT SASKATCHEWAN

Saturday, October 25
7:00 p.m. ET
TSN/CFL+

After seeing that the Roughriders rested a lot of their offensive starters against Winnipeg, I expect we’ll see a mix of players staying ready in the Riders’ regular season finale knowing a bye week is ahead.

How long they play in the game is going to be a very interesting question we won’t know the answer to.

The bad news for the Riders is the BC Lions are likely playing for second and a home playoff game. The Riders have swept the season series thus far against the Lions, but Nathan Rourke has come alive over the last few months and could very well be the team the Riders are playing in two weeks in the Western Final.

But don’t sleep on the home team. As you found out last week, they are a deep squad with almost their entire roster having played meaningful snaps throughout the season to help this team capture first in the division.

I also see a much better Lions team than the one the Riders played last week in Winnipeg.

This is the game I’m the least confident in out of the entire week due to just how well that the Riders’ defence played in Winnipeg with players in and out of the lineup.

PICK: BC

4 storylines to watch in Week 21

Buckle up, CFL fans, we’re in for a wild final week of the regular season.

Week 21 features four games with something on the line for almost every club, something that hasn’t been seen in the CFL in recent memory.

The playoff picture is anything but decided heading into this weekend. The full playoff scenarios will be available later on this week on CFL.ca, so keep in mind there are going to be some complicated scenarios that haven’t been mentioned here.

In the meantime, to help get you set for the four-game slate, here’s a storyline to watch in every contest.

FIRST IN THE EAST ON THE LINE

Ottawa at Hamilton | Friday, October 24 | 7:00 p.m. ET | TSN/RDS/CFL+

All Hamilton has to do is win against Ottawa on Friday night and they lock up first place in the East Division.

The last time the Tiger-Cats finished first in their division and hosted the Eastern Final was in 2019, when the team went 15-3. They booked a trip to the Grey Cup that season, beating Edmonton (who crossed over into the East) in the final. It wasn’t a storybook ending for the Tabbies, however, as they lost that Grey Cup in Calgary to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

While I’m sure they’re hoping their fate this season is different than that outcome, that’s looking a bit too far ahead. For now, it’s all about this Friday’s game against the REDBLACKS. Sure, Ottawa has lost five games in a row, but if we’ve learned anything in this league, it’s to never write off any team.

Ottawa will want to finish their 2025 campaign on a high note, and there will be plenty of players looking to get some good things on tape.

Bo Levi Mitchell, Hamilton’s Most Outstanding Player, will hope that his team’s Week 20 bye will give them the edge in front of their home fans at Hamilton Stadium on Friday Night Football.

SOME LOVE FOR A CANADIAN DB

Calgary at Edmonton | Friday, October 24 | 9:30 p.m. ET | TSN/CFL+

Calgary currently sits in third place in the West, and while it’s far too convoluted for me to lay out all of the possible outcomes for where the Stamps, Bombers, and Lions can finish (I’ll leave that to CFL stats extraordinaire Steve Daniel and team to explain in the playoff scenarios that will come out later this week) I can tell you one thing: the Stampeders want to win to keep their hopes of hosting a game alive.

One player that should be key to their success against Edmonton is Adrian Greene. The standout Canadian DB collected back-to-back interceptions in his last two starts, including a pick-six against Toronto in Week 20. Oddly enough, the only other pick-six he scored this year was also against the Argos earlier this season.

The standout corner, who primarily played safety and was not a full-time starter in his first three seasons in the CFL with the BC Lions, has been exceptional for Calgary this year. He started the campaign off strong, tallying 20 tackles and four interceptions, one returned for a major, in seven games before an injury in Week 8 kept him out of the lineup until Week 16. Since his return, the 26-year-old has collected 15 tackles and two interceptions (and the aforementioned pick-six) in five games.

The Elks are out of the playoffs, but are the most competitive of the three clubs who won’t be playing November football. They just barely missed out on the post-season, and have shown they can win against the best of the teams in the league, including the Stampeders.

Heated rivals, playoff implications, and playmakers looking to make plays on both teams? What more could you ask for in the final Friday Night Football game of 2025?

MORE PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS? YES, THERE’S MORE

Montreal at Winnipeg | Saturday, October 25 | 3:00 p.m. ET | TSN/RDS/CTV/CFL+

This game could have huge stakes for both teams.

If the Ottawa REDBLACKS upset the Ticats on Friday night, Montreal would need to win to take over first in the east and then they would host the Eastern Final on November 8. Davis Alexander extended his win streak as a starter to 11-0 last week and will hope to improve that to 12-0 as he and his Als prepare to host either the Semi-Final or Final.

The stakes will be high no matter what for Winnipeg, as they, much like Calgary, will be looking to win to improve their playoff seeding since they currently sit in the crossover spot.

No team has ever crossed over and made it to the Grey Cup, and while streaks like that are meant to be broken, it may give the Bombers a bit more peace of mind to stay in the West on their path to the game on November 16.

Stay locked in to see if both teams have something on the line on Saturday, or if it’s playing for pride for one and playing for everything for the other.

EVEN MORE PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS? YES, THERE’S EVEN MORE

BC at Saskatchewan | Saturday, October 25 | 7:00 p.m. ET | TSN/CFL+

It seems wild to say this, but the only team that knows what they’re doing in the playoffs is Saskatchewan. The Riders clinched first in the West Division a few weeks ago and will host the Western Final on November 8. Last week, head coach Corey Mace decided to rest some of his starters, including quarterback Trevor Harris and running back AJ Ouellette. What does he decide to do this week? Reports out of Regina indicate that both will be in the lineup against BC.

The BC Lions have been the best team over the last stretch of the regular season, winning their last five contests. Their defence, which was struggling in the first part of the season, has locked in and is playing their best football of the year. Nathan Rourke has been doing Nathan Rourke things (the 70-yard touchdown run most certainly solidified him as my top MOP candidate, if anyone was wondering, and he was named the Lions’ MOP as well) and Keon Hatcher Sr. is having an incredibly special season.

There are a few other scenarios that could yield this result, but the easiest one for the Lions is this: win and they will host the Western Semi-Final on November 1.

There’s something at stake right up until the final whistle of the last game of Week 21. Isn’t this fun?

Prediction Time: CFL.ca writers’ Week 21 picks

TORONTO — There’s one week left in the regular season and it’s still anyone’s game.

That’s true on the field. The only thing we know is that the Roughriders will host the Western Final. And it’s true on the writer picks graphic, too. There are only five games separating first from last.

This isn’t the final week for the pick makers to make their selections, however. We go all the way through the playoffs and to the 112th Grey Cup, so there’s still time for everyone trailing Pat Steinberg to make up ground.

Who is everyone rolling with in Week 21?

OTTAWA AT HAMILTON

OTTAWA AT HAMILTON

Friday, October 24
7:00 p.m. ET
TSN/RDS/CFL+

The Ottawa REDBLACKS are one of three teams that know they will not be playing football in November. Bob Dyce’s group will still want to finish their season on a high note, as they look to snap a five-game losing skid. The Tiger-Cats, on the other hand, still want to earn a bye to the Eastern Final and will be doing everything they can to get a win on Friday night and stay ahead of Montreal. Bo Levi Mitchell and his teammates were on a Week 20 bye and with rest in their back pockets, all of the writers think they will get the W at home this week.

WRITERS’ PICK: 100% Hamilton

CALGARY AT EDMONTON

Friday, October 24
9:30 p.m. ET
TSN/CFL+

Edmonton was oh-so-close to making it into the post-season, but were officially eliminated last week in their loss to the BC Lions. Don’t think they’ll take it easy this week, however. The Elks, like Ottawa, will want to finish 2025 on a positive note by playing spoiler to their rival Stampeders. Calgary has won two games in a row and with things so tight in the West, they’ll want to get a win to try to control their own destiny. Can Vernon Adams Jr. help lead his Stamps to a third-straight win? Or will Cody Fajardo spoil the party? All of the writers think the Stamps will be victorious.

WRITERS’ PICK: 100% Calgary

MONTREAL AT WINNIPEG

Saturday, October 25
3:00 p.m. ET
TSN/RDS/CTV/CFL+

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are coming off a win, a narrow 17-16 victory, over the Saskatchewan Roughriders and they still don’t know where they will be playing post-season football. Winnipeg can either stay in the West Division for the playoffs or crossover into the East. With no crossover team ever making it to the Grey Cup, Zach Collaros and co. will likely want to try to stay in the West for their playoff run. Depending on the outcome of the Ticats game on Friday night, this game could mean a whole lot for Montreal. If Hamilton loses, Montreal can still grab first place and the coveted bye into the Final. Which team will come away victorious? The writers are split on the decision.

WRITERS’ PICK: 60% Montreal

BC AT SASKATCHEWAN

Saturday, October 25
7:00 p.m. ET
TSN/CFL+

Week 21’s finale will be key for the Lions, as they look for a win so they can host the Western Semi-Final. Nathan Rourke and co. have been the hottest team in the CFL recently, winning their fifth-straight contest last week against the Edmonton Elks. Will BC make it six in a row this weekend? The Roughriders will hope not. They dropped their Week 20 contest, a one-point loss to the Bombers, with a handful of starters, including quarterback Trevor Harris and running back AJ Ouellette, resting. It remains to be seen what the strategy is for Corey Mace’s team this week, but regardless of who’s playing, they’ll be looking for a win before heading out on a playoff bye.

WRITERS’ PICK: 100% BC

Quote of the Day
“I don’t have any animosity toward the organization. Obviously, I wish that things had been better in our last year there, but I have a great relationship with a lot of people still in that organization, and this is not a revenge game for me.”
Aaron Rodgers, whose Steelers host Green Bay Sunday night

Thursday’s quiz
Who is the only baseball player that hit 100+ home runs for both the Blue Jays and the Dodgers?

Wednesday’s quiz
Kevin Durant played his college basketball at Texas.

Tuesday’s quiz
Last time the Blue Jays were in the World Series, they beat the Phillies.

Thursday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

— San Francisco Giants hired former Tennessee Vols coach Tony Vitelloas their new skipper, the first time a big league team has hired a manager directly from a college program without any experience as a professional coach. Vitello won the College World Series with the Vols in 2024.
Giants have missed the playoffs the last four years; they went 81-81 this past season.

— Sounds like there will be two Japanese sluggers moving to the major leagues next year.

Munetaka Murakami is a 3B/1B who has hit 246 home runs in 892 games for the Yakult Swallows, including a 56-homer season in 2022.
1B/3B Kazuma Okamoto has hit 248 home runs for the Yomiuri Giants, hitting 30+ homers six years in a row, from 2018-23. Okamoto hit two homers, had 7 RBI when Japan won the World Baseball Classic in 2023.

— Freddie Freeman has homered in six of his last seven World Series games.

— Baseball is expected to expand by two teams in the next four years; MLB hasn’t expanded since 1998 (Arizona/Tampa Bay). When the expansion happens, will realignment happen too?
Geographic realignment would cut down on travel costs, and probably raise attendance with more games between regional rivals.

— Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels (hamstring) won’t play when the Commanders play in Kansas City Monday night. Backup Marcus Mariota will start his third game this year.

— NFL coaches’ instant replay challenges have succeeded 60% of time this year, compared to 39.6% at this time last year.
This season, coaches and club staffers in the coaching booth can watch the same camera feed as the replay official at the game, which has helped them make better decisions.

— Miami Dolphins won consecutive Super Bowls in the early 70’s; when they beat the Vikings 24-7 in the Super Bowl after the 1973 season, their QB, Bob Greise, threw only seven passes the whole game. Griese was 6-7/73 passing. Total yardage in the game was 259-238, Miami.
Football sure has changed a lot.

— Delaware 31, Middle Tennessee 28

— Missouri State 24, New Mexico State 17 OT
NM State scored TD with 1:49 left to force overtime.
Missouri State outgained Aggies, 409-289.
Bears won despite committing 12 penalties for 110 yards..

— 76ers 117, Celtics 116
VJ Edgecombe scored 34 points in his debut, the most points anyone scored in his first NBA game since Wilt Chamberlain scored 43, in 1959.
Tyrese Maxey scored 40 points to lead the 76ers.
76ers were +18 in the 32:00 Quentin Grimes played.

— Spurs 125, Mavericks 92
Victor Wembanyama scored 40 points, had 15 rebounds.
Spurs outscored Dallas 65-41 in the second half.
Dallas was minus-29 with rookie Cooper Flagg on the floor.
ESPN’s announcers wouldn’t shut up about Flagg, who shot 4-13 “He’s done nothing but win”; the kid played one year in college and Duke didn’t win the national title. Let him play some before you induct him into the Hall of Fame.

— Knicks 119, Cavaliers 111
OG Anunoby had 24 points, 14 rebounds.
Knicks led 65-50 at halftime.
Knicks were 31-36 on the foul line, Cleveland 12-18.
