Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up this season’s first college football Saturday

— This may have been the strangest football game I’ve ever seen:

North Carolina 63, Appalachian State 61
App State scored 40 points in the 4th quarter- they lost.
UNC scored 34 straight points at one point, and damn near had to go to overtime.

Total yardage: App State 649, Carolina 567
App State scored TD’s on their first three drives, then didn’t score again until the 4th quarter, when six different Mountaineers scored a touchdown.

Six of their guys each scored a TD in one quarter, and they still lost.

Kid on North Carolina ran an onside kick back for a TD with 0:28 left, giving them a 63-55 lead, but if he had just fallen down instead of scoring the TD, the game would’ve been over and App State wouldn’t have gotten their last chance to tie the game.

Mountaineers failed on two 2-point plays in the last minute; one would’ve tied the game, the first one would’ve put App State ahead.

Miller Gibbs caught a TD pass for App State; his grandfather is Joe Gibbs, the old Redskins’ coach who won three Super Bowls on his way to the Hall of Fame.

— Mack Brown coached App State for one year, back in 1983; he made $38,500, then bolted to Oklahoma to be an assistant, for a lot more $$$$. He still has a home near App State; he said his neighbors were all rooting against him Saturday.

NC State 21, East Carolina 20— Huge sigh of relief comes from Raleigh- they almost blew a 21-7 halftime lead.

East Carolina missed a PAT and a 41-yard FG in the 4th quarter; their kicker was the best one in the AAC last season.

State completed only 17-33 passes, converted only 4-13 on third down; ECU outgained them, 383-344. Both teams turned the ball over twice.

Ole Miss 28, Troy 10— Lane Kiffin’s father is Monte Kiffin, who was a defensive coordinator in the NFL (a great one) for many years. The TV guys on this game showed how Lane Kiffin lived in seven different cities, before he even went to college.

This is an under-reported part of football coaching, how coaches are nomadic— it probably has more of an effect on their families, since the coaches spend most of their time in their offices anyway. Kids have to go to different schools, make new friends. Has to be difficult.

Nebraska 38, North Dakota 17— This game was 17-17 with 3:00 left in the third quarter; the final score is misleading. North Dakota is a I-AA team. Lets just say, the natives are restless in Lincoln.

Georgia 49, Oregon 3— Rough start to the Dan Lanning era in Eugene; total yardage was 571-313, a total beatdown. Georgia scored a TD the first seven times they had the ball.
