NCAA Basketball Game Preview - Marquette Golden Eagles vs. Kansas Jayhawks

The Duke Blue Devils are looking like the team to beat early in the college basketball season, but there is plenty of time for others to prove their strength. Another team expected to be right in the mix is the Kansas Jayhawks, who are ranked No. 2 in the nation and are off to an undefeated start. Kansas gets a nice test this week when it faces off against the Marquette Golden Eagles.

While Marquette isn?t as highly regarded, the Golden Eagles have success year in and year out and would love to pull this early-season upset. The Jayhawks are going to be favored in this game but Marquette should be able to hang around. If Marquette shoots the ball well this game could be close heading into the final minutes in NCAA basketball betting.

This NCAA basketball game between the Marquette Golden Eagles and Kansas Jayhawks will be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York at 7 p.m ET on Wednesday, November 21st, 2018. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.

We'll have NCAA basketball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 NCAA basketball season.

Odds Analysis

The Jayhawks are 3-0 thus far on season. They have played one tough foe and came away with a 92-87 victory over the Michigan State Spartans, which should help come NCAA Tournament time. The Jayhawks unsurprisingly cruised to victories over Vermont and Louisiana.

Marquette has won three of its four games early on. The Golden Eagles began with wins over UMBC and Bethune-Cookman but lost by 23 points to Indiana, the toughest team it has faced on the year. Marquette knocked off Presbyterian last time out but the blowout loss to the only high-major foe on the schedule so far is a bit concerning in NCAA basketball gambling.

Player To Watch

Udoka Azubuike -- The Kansas big man is back for his junior season and seems on his way to a dominant campaign. Azubuike is averaging 19.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per contest. He is shooting 67.6 percent on the season, which, unbelievably, is actually quite worse than last year when Azubuike shot a crazy 77 percent from the field.

Marquette needs to deny him easy looks as Azubuike clearly knows how to convert around the rim. The main thing that has slowed him down this year is foul trouble, as Azubuike played only 20 minutes in the win over Michigan State. If he sees the court for the majority of this one he could have a monster game.

Key Stat

7. That?s the number of three-pointers Marquette shooting guard Markus Howard made in the game against Bethune-Cookman earlier this season. He has one of the best shooting strokes in college basketball and the team?s best shot at the upset is if he catches fire from downtown.

Howard scored 37 points in that game and leads the team with an average of 20.0 on the season. Kansas has some athletic guards who will aim to take Howard out of his comfort zone but he only needs a little bit of room to get his shot off.

Howard shot 54 percent from three-point range as a freshman and 40.4 percent last season as a sophomore.

Free NCAA Basketball ATS Picks

Marquette has some good players and it should be in contention for March Madness this season, but Kansas is deeper and more talented. The Jayhawks should be able to keep a decent lead in the second half and hold off any runs Marquette might make.

Look for this one to be decently competitive but for the Jayhawks to come away with the victory in the end. Kansas is hoping to pile up the marquee wins in order to get a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament down the line in NCAA basketball odds.

NCAA Basketball Pick: Kansas Jayhawks 83, Marquette Golden Eagles 74

No. 16 Clemson in Cayman final vs. Creighton
November 21, 2018
By STATS LLC Editorial

During the Brad Brownell era, Clemson is almost perfect when it locks down on defense.

The 16th-ranked Tigers will need to be at their best when they face Creighton and its high-scoring offense on Wednesday in the championship of the Cayman Islands Classic.

Clemson advanced with a 64-49 win over Georgia in the semifinals and is now 40-2 under Brownell when holding an opponent under 50.

"We did a tremendous job executing our defensive plan," the Tigers' coach said after Tuesday's win. "Tremendous job. It was a great win, but we're trying to get one more. We need to finish the job, finish our mission."

The Tigers had seven blocked shots and limited the Bulldogs to 5-for-18 from 3-point range, although Clemson was even worse from deep (5-for-20).

Marquise Reed had a game-high 24 points for the Tigers. Reed also had nine rebounds, as Clemson collected 11 on the offensive end, leading to an 11-1 advantage on second-chance points.

Clemson never trailed.

Creighton (4-1) shot better than 60 percent while racing to a 52-24 halftime lead and cruised to a 93-68 win over Georgia State in the other semifinal.

The Blue Jays, who made eight 3-pointers in the first half, also forced 11 turnovers.

I thought our guys collectively did a good job on (their guards) in the first half, and that was able to get us to the lead," Creighton coach Greg McDermott said after his team's win.

"And we were able to coast from there."

Both Creighton and Clemson are led by guards.

Reed and the Blue Jays' Ty-Shon Alexander are both averaging 17 points per game.

Creighton has faced zone defenses in their first two games in the Caymans, McDermott said. He expected Wednesday's final to be a different story.

"They're going to try to punch us in the mouth tomorrow with their man-to-man," he said.

The Blue Jays arrived in the Caribbean after suffering their first loss of the season, 69-60 to Ohio State. The island air has sparked their offense.

In wins over Boise State and the Panthers, the Blue Jays have shot 56 percent from the floor while averaging 93.5 points.

Clemson held off Akron 72-69 in the first round to advance, while Creighton topped Boise State 94-82.

Hachimura, No. 3 Gonzaga hang on to upset No. 1 Duke in Maui
November 21, 2018
By The Associated Press

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) Rui Hachimura scored 20 points and No. 3 Gonzaga blocked four shots in the final 46 seconds to hold off five-time champion Duke 89-87 Wednesday in the Maui Invitational title game.

Duke (5-1) trailed by 16 in the second half before mounting a massive charge with a series of dunks and drives to the basket. After the Blue Devils tied it at 87-all, Hachimura scored on a hard drive to put Gonzaga ahead.

The Zags (6-0) missed four free throws to give Duke a final shot, but Brandon Clarke blocked R.J. Barrett's drive on the game's final play.

Gonzaga beat a No. 1 team for the first time and ended Duke's unbeaten streak on the Valley Isle (17-1) with its second Maui Invitational title.

Barrett had 23 points and Zion Williamson scored 22 for Duke.

Zach Norvell Jr. scored 18 points for the Zags.

NO. 2 KANSAS 77, MARQUETTE 68

NEW YORK (AP) - Dedric Lawson had 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead Kansas in an NIT Season Tip-Off semifinal.

Marquette (3-1) led by as many as 12 in the first half before taking a 47-38 lead into the break. Then came the Jayhawks' 22-0 run.

Marquette went 0-of-10 from the field to start second half as Kansas (4-0) retook the lead in commanding fashion.

Sam Hauser led the Golden Eagles with 20 points while Markus Howard had 18 points.

The Jayhawks got 16 points from Lagerald Vick while Devon Dotson chipped in with 10 points, four assists and three steals.

NO. 4 VIRGINIA 74, MIDDLE TENNESSEE 52

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) - De'Andre Hunter had 15 points, nine assists and eight rebounds to help Virginia beat Middle Tennessee in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Kyle Guy also scored 15 points and Braxton Key added 13 for the Cavaliers (4-0), who never trailed but didn't put the game away until midway through the second half. Virginia led 9-0 and 30-9, only to see the Blue Raiders claw to within 38-30 early in the second half.

Guy answered with a 3-pointer to start a 9-0 run that stretched the lead back out. Middle Tennessee got no closer than 11 again.

Antonio Green scored 11 points to lead Middle Tennessee (3-2), which shot 39 percent.

NO. 5 TENNESSEE 92, LOUISVILLE 81

NEW YORK (AP) - Grant Williams scored 24 points to lead five Tennessee players in double figures in an NIT Season Tip-Off semifinal.

Admiral Schofield added 20 points for the Vols (4-0), who shot 54 percent from the field. The win was the 664th of Tennessee coach Rick Barnes' career. It moved him past John Wooden on the all-time Division I wins list.

Trailing 77-70 with 6:51 left, Louisville coach Chris Mack got called for a technical foul when he didn't like an over-the-back call on Dwayne Sutton. The Cardinals could never recover, trailing by as many as 15.

Jordan Nwora had 23 points and 10 assists to lead Louisville (3-1).

NO. 10 KENTUCKY 87, WINTHROP 74

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - PJ Washington had 19 points and 11 rebounds, Tyler Herro added 15 points and Kentucky shot 56 percent to run away from Winthrop.

Coming off Sunday's tense victory over hot-shooting VMI, the Wildcats (4-1) had a far easier time against the Eagles as they used their size to control the boards 37-20 and scoring in the paint (42-24).

Washington was the catalyst, making 7 of 11 from the field on the way to his second consecutive double-double. Herro left the game briefly after taking a hard tumble in the first half but returned to make 6 of 14 with three 3-pointers.

Josh Ferguson, Charles Falden and Austin Awad each had 11 points, while Kyle Zunic and Adam Pickett added 10 apiece for Winthrop (2-3), which lost its second in a row.

NO. 15 MISSISSIPPI STATE 61, SAINT MARY'S 57

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Quinndary Weatherspoon and Tyson Carter each scored 12 points to lead Mississippi State in the consolation game of the MGM Main Event's heavyweight division.

Saint Mary's took a 50-48 lead with 6:15 left, but the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run, culminated by Aric Holman's powerful dunk.

The Bulldogs (4-1) got nine points and 11 rebounds from Holman, while Lamar Peters added 10 points.

Jordan Ford scored 23 points for the Gaels (3-2), and Malik Fitts added 10 points and nine rebounds.

CREIGHTON 87, NO. 16 CLEMSON 82

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) - Sophomore Ty-Shon Alexander made seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 36 points to lead Creighton to the upset in the championship game of the Cayman Islands Classic.

Alexander, who was named the most outstanding player of the tournament, was 9-of-16 shooting, missing just five from distance, and made all 11 of his free throws.

Clemson's Marcquise Reed completed a 3-point play with 28 seconds left and Elijah Thomas forced a turnover on an inbound play, leading to Shelton Mitchell's shot inside to pull to 83-80. Davion Mintz answered with two free throws at the other end, and after Reed was off on a 3-pointer, Mintz sealed it with a dunk.

Reed was 11 of 22 from the floor and scored 27 points for Clemson (5-1), reaching 1,001 points with the team.

NO. 20 IOWA 105, ALABAMA STATE 78

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Luka Gazra scored 22 points, freshman Joe Wieskamp had a career-high 20 and Iowa rolled in its home debut as a ranked team.

Tyler Cook scored 16 points and Isaiah Moss added 15 for the Hawkeyes (5-0), who dismissed any notion of a letdown with 68 first-half points - their most under ninth-year coach Fran McCaffery.

Iowa scored the game's first 12 points on its way to the rout. Wieskamp broke his previous career high of 15 points midway through the first half in helping the Hawkeyes stake out a 30-11 lead.

Reginald Gee had 16 points to lead Alabama State (2-3).

NO. 22 BUFFALO 110, DARTMOUTH 71

AMHERST, N.Y. (AP) - Nick Perkins had 18 points and 10 rebounds in Buffalo's win.

Buffalo, playing without leading scorer C.J. Massinburg in its first game after a nine-day layoff, raced to a 15-0 lead in the first five minutes. Buffalo had a 26-point lead at halftime.

Five players scored in double figures for Buffalo (4-0), which tied its record for points in a game since moving to Division I in 1994-95. Davonta Jordan and Jayvon Graves scored 16 points apiece for Buffalo, while Jeremy Harris and Jeenathan Williams each had 11.

Ian Sistare scored 18 points for Dartmouth (3-2), all in the first half, and Chris Knight added 17.

NO. 25 WISCONSIN 62, STANFORD 46

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) - Ethan Happ had 16 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out late, and Wisconsin beat Stanford in the first round at the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Sophomore Nate Reuvers had a tournament-record nine blocked shots for the Badgers (4-0), a total that also tied the longtime Wisconsin single-game record.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Some NFL spread trends for Week 12:

? Buccaneers are 3-13 in last 16 games as a home favorite.

? Oakland is 2-9-1 in last dozen games as a road underdog.

? New England covered 15 of its last 20 games.

? Dolphins covered 3 of last 13 games as a road underdog.

? Minnesota is 15-5-1 in its last 21 games.

? Steelers are 12-21 in last 33 games as non-divisional road favorites.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's Den: Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!!!!

13) Bears? backup QB Chase Daniel has been in the NFL for nine years, during which time he?s banked $28M while starting two games; one each for the Chiefs in 2013, 2014. Looks like it?ll be Daniel making the start for Chicago in their game at Detroit today? Mitch Trubisky?s shoulder is banged up, so it is likely he will take Thanksgiving Day off.

12) Gonzaga 89, Duke 87? Quite a ballgame; Zags gagged pretty badly in last 0:30, going 0-4 on foul line, but Duke missed their last seven shots from floor and Gonzaga wins the Maui Classic. This is the triumph of a more experienced team over a younger, more talented group.

11) On Duke?s last shot of this game, there was contact but no foul was called; ESPN analyst Jay Bilas (a Duke alum) offered a mild protest, but where was he Tuesday, when Duke shot 20 free throws before Auburn took one? Its not so easy when you don?t get every call.

Bilas/Bill Walton were ESPN?s two analysts for the Maui Classic; Bilas had the Duke side of the broadcast all three days. Is Walton not allowed to work Duke games?

10) Thanks to Nike for saving me some money by designing the ugliest polo shirts ever this year; the polo shirts the coaches of Nike teams are wearing this week aren?t good.

9) Fran Fraschilla is working games for ESPN in Brooklyn this week; I?m sure he thrilled the people in Cincinnati when he called Chris Mack?s move from Xavier to Louisville a ?no-brainer?

Mack went to college at Xavier and coached there for 18 years, nine as head coach- I?m guessing he put a lot of thought into the decision. Mrs Mack is from Louisville, which probably sealed the deal, but you don?t just bolt your alma mater, especially a school in the basketball-only Big East.

8) Jim Hickey is out as pitching coach of the Cubs; manager Joe Maddon will be a lame duck skipper in 2019? Hickey also worked with Maddon in Tampa Bay. Not lot of appreciation being shown for Maddon winning the World Series in 2016.

7) Tampa Bay Rays dumped 1B/DH CJ Cron, who hit 30 homers last year. There has to be some place in the majors this guy can play. His career OB% is .311 which hurts him in this age of analytics, but come on, there isn?t one MLB team that could use a 30-homer guy?

6) Marquette has a very good basketball player named Markus Howard whose dad played football at Indiana? his coach there was ESPN GameDay analyst Lee Corso, who coached the Hoosiers for ten seasons (1973-82).

5) Grizzlies 104, Spurs 103? Right now, Memphis has the best record in the west, which is a huge surprise. Golden State is 12-7 and is the 5th seed in the west right now.

4) Georgia State 91, Georgia 67? Huge win for the erratic Panthers, who lost to Creighton by 25 on Tuesday. Tom Crean?s Dawgs had a rough week on the Cayman Islands.

3) Dayton 69, Butler 64? Big win for the Atlantic 14, which is 10th-rated conference right now; last time they ended a season ranked this low was 12 years ago.

2) Pittsburgh 75, Saint Louis 73? Panthers are already 6-0, after going 8-24 last year; they?re starting three freshmen and two juniors, are #299 experience team. Saint Louis is top-ranked team in A-14, so this loss hurts that conference.

1) Knicks 117, Celtics 109? Boston is a disappointing 9-9 on Thanksgiving morning.

?(Bleep) Thanksgiving,? said Kyrie Irving after this game. Alrighty then.

Villanova, Oklahoma State, LSU reach Advocare semifinals
November 22, 2018
By The Associated Press

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) Villanova took a step forward after dropping out of the Top 25 for the first time since December 2013.

Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree had 15 points and 13 rebounds, and the defending national champion Wildcats stopped a two-game skid by beating Canisius 83-56 on Thursday in the opening round of the AdvoCare Invitational at Disney World.

''We pride ourselves on attention to detail, and as you can see right now we just don't have it,'' Villanova coach Jay Wright said. ''We've got a lot of new guys, but it was a good step for us today. I thought a lot of good details defensively, good details on the glass.''

The Wildcats outrebounded Canisius 51-24.

Oklahoma State, No. 14 Florida State and No. 19 LSU joined Villanova in Friday's semifinals.

Phil Booth also scored 15 points for the Wildcats (3-2). They will play Oklahoma State, which beat Memphis 84-64.

Villanova went from No. 8 to unranked after losing to Michigan 73-46 in a rematch of last season's national championship game and getting beaten 76-68 in overtime by Furman last week.

Wildcats stars Mikal Bridges, Jalen Brunson, Donte DiVincenzo and Omari Spellman were all selected in the NBA draft after last season's championship run.

''When we were in the AP poll we never talked about it, so when we're not we don't talk about it,'' Wright said. ''We were looking forward to playing better and that's what I'm really pleased with.''

Canisius (1-3) got 19 points from Isaiah Reese. Takal Molson, who entered averaging 21.3 per game, had 10.

The Golden Griffins got to 63-52 with 4 1/2 minutes left before Villanova pulled away.

Canisius and Memphis will meet Friday in the consolation round.

---

No. 14 FLORIDA STATE 81, UAB 63

Terance Mann scored 17 points to help Florida State (4-0) advance to a semifinal matchup with No. 19 LSU.

''They're extremely deep,'' Seminoles coach Leonard Hamilton said. ''They're as talented as any team that we'll play. They have ball-handlers, athletic guys who are big and strong, and they're well coached. You get a chance to see where you are and see what errors in the game which you have to work on.''

Christ Koumadje had 12 points and nine rebounds for Florida State. Mfiondu Kabengele, the nephew of former NBA All-Star center Dikembe Mutombo, added 10 points.

Tyreek Scott-Grayson scored 16 for UAB (3-1).

The Blazers, who trailed 44-37 with 17 minutes remaining, will face College of Charleston in the consolation bracket Friday.

''We were ready to play. We were intense,'' UAB coach Robert Ehsan said. ''I thought the backbreaker was when we cut that lead under 10 and they made two deep 3s at the end of the shot clock.''

---

No. 19 LSU 67, COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON 55

Emmitt Williams had 14 points and nine rebounds for LSU.

''For the most part we controlled the game from tip to finish,'' Tigers coach Will Wade said. ''It got close there a little bit, but every time they got close we answered with big shots or big possessions or a big defensive stop.''

Skylar Mays added 12 points for the Tigers (5-0), off to their best start since opening 6-0 in 2012-13.

Tigers freshman Naz Reid, slowed by an ankle injury, had six points and two rebounds in 15 minutes. The forward had four points over 10 minutes in last Friday's 74-67 win over Louisiana Tech.

College of Charleston (3-2) got a season-high 27 points and nine rebounds from Jarrell Brantley. It was his 19th game of 20 or more points.

Grant Riller, averaging 19 points per game coming in, was held to four on 2-of-10 shooting.

''We're trying to figure out where we are,'' Cougars coach Earl Grant said. ''You get a chance to play in a very competitive tournament. It's good for us.''

---

OKLAHOMA STATE 84, MEMPHIS 64

Oklahoma State dominated inside in a one-sided victory over Memphis.

Cameron McGriff scored 11 points and added 12 rebounds, and Yor Anel had 12 points and six blocked shot as the Cowboys advanced to Friday's semifinals.

''We have a lot of size,'' McGriff said. ''We try and use that to our advantage.''

Oklahoma State (3-1) shot 57 percent.

''I think this team has got a chance to become really good over the course of the season,'' Cowboys coach Mike Boynton said. ''I'm excited to see them continue to grow.''

Tyler Harris led Memphis (2-2) with 14 points. The Tigers entered averaging 87 per game.

Former Orlando Magic star Penny Hardaway is the first-year coach at Memphis.

''It was really embarrassing today, to me, to have our team go out and defend the way we defended,'' Hardaway said. ''We knew exactly what was coming and they still punched us in the mouth. They swung first and they never stopped swinging.''

Longhorns stun No. 7 UNC, 92-89
November 22, 2018
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

LAS VEGAS (AP) Kerwin Roach II blended aggression and good decision making, just how coach Shaka Smart drew it up.

Roach scored a career-best 32 points and helped Texas hold off a late charge to beat No. 7 North Carolina 92-89 on Thursday and advance to the final of the Las Vegas Invitational.

''I just played the game the right way and didn't want to force anything,'' said Roach, who also had seven assists and six steals. ''(My teammates) did a nice job creating shots. We have a blue-collar team. We have to fight to win. Last year when we lost a game to Duke like this, it was tears of sadness. Tonight, there are tears of happiness.''

Texas (5-0) plays in the championship game Friday against No. 11 Michigan State. North Carolina gets No. 17 UCLA in the consolation game.

Roach also had six rebounds and was 12 of 15 from the field, including 3 of 3 from deep. The senior topped his previous best of 26 points with an emphatic dunk with 8:27 left for a 73-65 lead.

''The best thing about him tonight was he really took the right shots and made the right reads,'' Smart said. ''He really got us going after a slow start. They were coming at us. They're not going to stop shooting lights out unless we make them.''

Roach and North Carolina freshman Coby White went back and forth all game. White had 33 points, but he missed a 3-pointer that would have put the Tar Heels (5-1) ahead with 1:01 left. He was 7 of 10 from 3-point range.

White had the most points by a UNC freshman since Harrison Barnes' 40 in 2011 against Clemson at the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

Matt Coleman III had 16 points for Texas, and Jaxson Hayes had 15 points and nine rebounds. Dylan Osetkowski had 14 points, including a buzzer-beating 3 that put Texas up 43-42 at halftime.

''Our guys did a nice job managing the game against their trap defense,'' Smart said. ''I told the guys at halftime, we have to be the more blue-collar team. We have to be gritty. It's not going to be beautiful basketball out there. We have to find a way to go and get those loose balls.''

Cameron Johnson had 16 points for the Tar Heels. Luke Maye had 11 points and nine rebounds, while Nassir Little had 11 points and six rebounds.

''In the first half, we took four free throws and we started taking 3-point shots and threw the ball out of bounds,'' North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. ''In the second half, I think our guys competed much harder.''

The Longhorns pulled away after halftime and led by 11 with 11:08 left. North Carolina responded by cutting it 80-78 with 5:44 left.

The Longhorns have had success against the Tar Heels, leading 8-3 in the all-time series. They also won the previous meeting in December 2015 at Austin, Texas.

NO. 11 MICHIGAN STATE 87, NO. 17 UCLA 67

Cassius Winston had 19 points and seven assists to help No. 11 Michigan State cruise past No. 17 UCLA to reach the final of the Las Vegas Invitational.

''It was one of those weird times my assistants did a good job, my players did a good job,'' said Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, whose team shot 52 percent. ''And when you make shots, you look better than you are.''

Nick Ward scored 16 points, Joshua Langford had 14 and Josh McQuaid had 11 for Michigan State (4-1).

Izzo didn't get to see Texas upset North Carolina earlier in the day, but Michigan State had already done film work on the Longhorns and has some idea what to expect.

''They're athletic, they're really athletic,'' Izzo said. ''From what I heard, they played a lot better than we saw them on film.''

Kris Wilkes had 15 points to lead UCLA (4-1). Jaylen Hands and Chris Smith each had 11 points for the Bruins, who shot 36 percent from the field.

Michigan State built its largest lead at 29 with 1:49 until halftime. The Spartans shot 10 of 17 from 3-point range in the session, while UCLA shot 24 percent.

NO. 6 NEVADA 96, TULSA 86

Jordan Caroline had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 6 Nevada beat Tulsa to reach the final of the other Las Vegas Invitational bracket.

Nevada (5-0) will face Massachusetts on Friday night.

Caleb Martin added 21 points for the Wolf Pack, making all 10 of his free throws. Jazz Johnson had 20 points on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range.

Sterling Taplin the Golden Hurricane (4-1) with 22 points, and Martins Igbanu added 14.

Nevada finally pulled away with about 10 minutes left in the game, building an 80-62 lead with 9:30 left. Tulsa cut it to 88-79 with 3:48 remaining.

UMASS 84, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 62

Luwane Pipkins scored 15 points and UMass raced to a 16-2 lead in a victory over Southern Illinois to set up a matchup against Nevada.

Carl Pierre added 14 points, and Curtis Cobb had 11. The Minutemen made a season-high 15 3-pointers, one shy of the school record.

Eric McGill led Southern Illinois (2-3) with 18 points, and Kavion Pippen added 12.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

2) Nevada Wolf Pack (Mountain West)

3) Jacksonville State Gamecocks (OVC)

7) San Diego Toreros (WCC)

8) Montana Grizzlies (Big Sky)

9) The Citadel Bulldogs (SoCon)

11) Hofstra Pride (CAA)

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up Thanksgiving leftovers??

13) Bears 23, Lions 16? Chicago won its last five games, beating Detroit twice in 12 days. Chase Daniel won his first NFL start in four years, and only the third of his 9-year career.

Chicago now has 29 takeaways, most in the NFL, and a +14 turnover ratio.

12) Cowboys 31, Redskins 23? Three weeks ago, Dallas was 3-5 and pundits were calling for coach Jason Garrett?s head. Now Dallas is in first place in the NFC East, a division that figures to have a wild finish. What if all four teams wound up 8-8?

11) Saints 31, Falcons 17? New Orleans won its last 10 games, covered its last nine. Some pundits are already awarding them the Lombardi Trophy.

Falcons have a running back named Ito Smith, a rookie from Southern Miss, and apparently, he was named after Judge Lance Ito, the judge who presided over OJ Simpson?s murder trial.

One of his parents thought young Mr Smith resembled Judge Ito right after he was born, so he was named after the then-famous judge, who was on TV almost every day for about a year.

10) Its funny, you hear about these college basketball teams who take international trips in the summer and how much it helps them the following season, which it usually does.

Except when it doesn?t; few years ago, a team I can?t remember who (USC maybe??) lost its point guard with a torn ACL on its international trip during the late summer and their season that winter was a total disaster. Goes to show you; there are no guarantees in life.

9) Basketball referee Ed Corbett worked the Maui Classic this week, then retired from being a basketball official? pretty good way to go out. Corbett was a D-I referee for 33 years.

8) Referee Ted Valentine, often known as TV Teddy for his tendency to attract attention while he referees, also worked the Maui Classic Monday-Wednesday, but then on Thursday, he was at Cal State-Fullerton working the Wooden Legacy tournament.

The best college basketball refs work 70-80 games a year from November-March and rake in a six-figure income from a job that usually isn?t their primary source of income.

7) Wisconsin 78, Oklahoma 58
Virginia 66, Dayton 59? Badgers-Cavaliers meet for the title at the Battle for Atlantis.

6) Michigan State 87, UCLA 67
Texas 92, North Carolina 89? Think FS1 was hoping for Carolina-Michigan State for its Friday night programming, but the Longhorns spoiled the party.

UCLA was down 51-26 at the half and now they have to play the Tar Heels in a consolation game tonight; going to be a long bus ride back to Westwood.

5) Hawai?i 90, Utah 79? Solid win for the Big West?s Rainbows; it is Hawai?s first win over a Pac-12 team since they upset Cal Bears in the 2016 NCAA?s.

4) At the Advocate tournament at Disney in Florida, all four favorites won/covered in the first round, which is pretty unusual. Also means there were four lousy games.

3) Mississippi State 35, Ole Miss 3? Rebels lost their last five games, finished their season 5-7, on a night where a fracas broke out and every player on both teams was assessed a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Never saw that before.

2) North Carolina had a football game cancelled by weather on September 15; they?re not going to make the game up, for financial reasons.

Turns out the Tar Heels had game cancellation insurance worth $1.6M; with low fan interest in another game, only a few teams available to play, UNC chose not to pay to add a week to its second consecutive losing season- they weren?t going to a bowl game either way.

1) The bus carrying U of Washington band rolled over last night, on its way to the Huskies? rivalry game with Washington State. Luckily, no serious injuries were reported.
