Dodgers clinch 7th straight NL West title
September 10, 2019
By The Associated Press

BALTIMORE (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched their seventh consecutive NL West title in fitting fashion, using two home runs by Corey Seager and a masterful pitching performance by Walker Buehler to beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-3 on Tuesday night.

After the final out, the first team to clinch a playoff spot this season gathered at the mound for a subdued celebration that included a wardrobe change for a pending champagne celebration in the clubhouse.

Los Angeles, coming off consecutive World Series losses to Houston and Boston and seeking its first title since 1988, will likely begin the postseason at Dodger Stadium on Oct. 3 against the NL wild-card team.

This is the earliest that Los Angeles (94-52) has ever clinched the division, both in terms of date and games. The 1977 team did it in Game 151, and the 2013 club clinched on Sept. 19.

Though an Arizona loss to the New York Mets would have clinched it for the Dodgers, Los Angeles emphatically took care of business on its own. Seager homered with two on to cap a four-run first inning against Ty Blach (1-3) and added a two-run drive in the third for a 6-0 lead.

Gavin Lux hit his first career homer in the fifth to increase the Dodgers' NL record for long balls in a season to 258.

Buehler (13-3) limited last-place Baltimore to four hits over seven shutout innings. He struck out 11.

BREWERS 4, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) -Christian Yelich broke his right kneecap on a foul ball and will miss the rest of the regular season, an injury that overshadowed Milwaukee's win over Miami.

The Brewers didn't say whether the reigning NL MVP might be able to return for the playoffs that begin Oct. 1 if they make it that far. Yelich will return to Milwaukee on Wednesday for further evaluation.

Milwaukee, which won its fifth in a row, began the day two games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second NL wild-card spot.

Yelich fouled a ball off his leg in the first inning. He was down on the ground for several minutes before limping off the field.

Pinch-hitter Tyler Austin lifted a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the ninth inning. Yasmani Grandal led off with a single against Adam Conley (2-9), Grisham doubled and Austin put the Brewers ahead.

Junior Guerra (9-5) got the win. Drew Pomeranz pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

Starlin Castro homered for Miami. Hernan Perez hit his 19th of the season for Miami.

METS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Zack Wheeler pitched one-run ball over seven innings, Justin Wilson navigated four difficult outs for his first save since April and New York beat Arizona.

New York has taken the first two games in this key four-game set between NL playoff contenders. Arizona had won 11 of 14 and opened the day 2 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second wild card.

Todd Frazier drove a pair of run-scoring doubles for the Mets, who began the day four games behind the Cubs.

Diamondbacks rookie Zac Gallen (3-5) pitched three-run ball over six innings.

Eduardo Escobar homered off reliever Brad Brach and drove in two for Arizona. He has 112 RBIs.

Wheeler (11-7) struck out seven and allowed seven hits and two walks.

PHILLIES 6, BRAVES 5

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Corey Dickerson homered twice to help Philadelphia's wild-card push and the Phillies hit five home runs overall in a win over Atlanta.

The Phillies entered three games behind the Cubs for the second wild-card spot in the NL.

J.T. Realmuto, Bryce Harper and Dickerson all homered in the first inning, Scott Kingery hit an inside-the-park homer and Dickerson tacked an insurance run with a solo shot late to help the Phillies win for the third time in four games.

Blake Parker (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings of the relief for the win. Hector Neris worked a scoreless ninth for his 25th save.

Max Fried (16-5) took the loss for Atlanta, which got run-scoring hits from Freddie Freeman, Dansby Swanson and Francisco Cervelli. Johan Camargo added a solo homer.

TIGERS 12, YANKEES 11

DETROIT (AP) - Jordy Mercer capped a comeback from a six-run deficit with a game-ending single off Chance Adams in the ninth inning, and Detroit overcame six home runs by New York.

Brett Gardner and Didi Gregorius each homered twice, and Gleyber Torres and Edwin Encarnacion also went deep for the Yankees, whose 276 homers tied Minnesota for the major league lead.

New York led 6-0 in the second inning. But the Tigers tied the score with six runs in the third, aided by an error by Torres at second base.

Grayson Greiner doubled with one out in the ninth off Chance Adams (1-1) and Mercer's single to the gap in right-center scored pinch-runner Willi Castro. Tigers closer Jimenez (3-8) pitched a perfect ninth.

BLUE JAYS 4, RED SOX 3

TORONTO (AP) - Rowdy Tellez hit a two-run home run, Cavan Biggio and Reese McGuire added solo shots and Toronto snapped a seven-game losing streak with a win over Boston.

Biggio walked twice and scored twice, and McGuire had two hits.

Mookie Betts homered for the Red Sox, who have lost four straight.

Justin Shafer (2-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings as Toronto won for the first time since Aug. 31. Ken Giles finished in the ninth for his 19th save in 20 opportunities.

Josh Taylor (1-2) took the loss.

TWINS 5, NATIONALS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jose Berrios surrendered two singles over seven innings in his best start in six weeks, Mitch Garver hit the tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh, and Minnesota beat Washington.

Berrios (12-8) struck out four and walked one. Anibal Sanchez (8-8) was almost as sharp for the Nationals, finishing with four hits and one walk allowed, along with five strikeouts.

The American League Central-leading Twins took a five-game lead on Cleveland into the night. The Indians, who have six more losses than the Twins, played at the Los Angeles Angels.

The Nationals entered 9+ games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East, but they were in the first wild card spot, 4+ games above the cut, ahead of Milwaukee. The Chicago Cubs have the second spot.

WHITE SOX 7, ROYALS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Rookie Eloy Jimenez hit his first career grand slam, Yoan Moncada launched a two-run homer and Chicago beat Kansas City.

Adam Engel added a solo shot for as the White Sox won their second straight, but just their fourth in 14 games.

Adalberto Mondesi, Alex Gordon and Ryan O'Hearn went deep for the Royals.

Ivan Nova (10-12) allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings to snap his three-game losing streak. The right-hander yielded six hits, while walking none and striking out five.

Jakob Junis (9-13) permitted five runs in five-plus innings in losing for the third time in four decisions.

ATHLETICS 21, ASTROS 7

HOUSTON (AP) - Matt Olson and Sean Murphy each homered twice, and Oakland tagged Wade Miley for seven runs in the first inning and scored a season-high 21 runs in a rout of Houston.

After being blanked in a lopsided loss on Monday, Oakland recovered to win its seventh of nine and remained ahead of Cleveland for the second AL wild-card spot.

The Astros were coming off a 21-1 win over Seattle on Sunday and a 15-0 thrashing of Oakland on Monday in which they hit seven homers. It was the first time the Athletics had been shut out since May 9.

But on Tuesday, the A's had a season-best 25 hits and built a 7-0 lead in the first inning without an extra-base knock. They still ended up tying a season high with six homers after not hitting any in their previous two games.

Houston's Wade Miley (13-5) allowed seven hits and seven earned runs in a third of an inning.

Tanner Roark (4-1) worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits, five earned runs and a walk with three strikeouts.

ROCKIES 2, CARDINALS 1

DENVER (AP) - Nolan Arenado hit a 482-foot two-homer that bounced out of Coors Field in the first inning, Chi Chi Gonzalez got his first big league win in four years and Colorado slowed St. Louis' playoff push.

St. Louis had won 23 of 30 coming in to open a four-game lead in the NL Central over the second-place Chicago Cubs.

Gonzalez (1-6) allowed one run and four hits in six innings. Jairo Diaz got six outs and finished a six-hitter for second save.

Michael Wacha (6-7) allowed five hits in four innings and is winless in seven starts and two relief appearances since July 19.

LEADING OFF: 9/11 tributes, HR record nears, Yelich injury
September 11, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

REMEMBERING

Major League Baseball pays tribute to those affected by the 9/11 tragedy with a moment of silence before all games. First responders will be among those honored in pregame ceremonies.

Players, managers, coaches and umpires will wear caps that have a side patch of a ''We Shall Not Forget'' silhouette, which will also be displayed on bases and lineup cards.

The Toronto Blue Jays will wear caps that salute Canada and the United States.

MASH MARK

Big league hitters are on pace to set the single-season home run record following another day with lots of long balls.

The mark of 6,105 homers was set in 2017. This year's total was 78 short of the record going into Tuesday - Matt Olson, George Springer, Didi Gregorius and Corey Seager were among several hitters who homered twice during the day.

TOUGH BREAK

NL MVP Christian Yelich travels back to Milwaukee for further tests, a day after breaking his right kneecap when he fouled a ball off himself.

The Brewers said the star outfielder is done for the regular season. They didn't say whether Yelich might be able to return for the playoffs that begin Oct. 1 if they make it that far.

Milwaukee has won five in a row going into its game at Miami and is chasing the Cubs for the second NL wild-card spot.

Yelich hit .329 with 44 home runs and 97 RBIs along with 30 stolen bases this season. The outfielder was leading the majors in slugging percentage and OPS.

Trent Grisham will get additional playing time in Yelich's absence. The rookie got five hits Monday and delivered a key double Tuesday night in a 4-3 win over the Marlins.

COASTIN'

The Los Angeles Dodgers can get back to work once the visitors' clubhouse at Camden Yards is cleaned from all the bubbly they sprayed.

The Dodgers clinched their seventh straight NL West title Tuesday night, becoming the first team to seal a playoff spot this year with a 7-3 win in Baltimore.

Los Angeles, coming off consecutive World Series losses to Houston and Boston and seeking its first title since 1988, will likely begin the postseason at Dodger Stadium on Oct. 3 against the NL wild-card team.

In the meantime, Ross Stripling (4-4, 3.42 ERA) makes a spot start for the Dodgers, facing Orioles lefty John Means (10-10, 3.50).

NOW WHAT?

No telling what's in store at Minute Maid Park after a pair of crazy games between the Athletics and Astros.

Matt Olson and Sean Murphy both homered twice as Oakland piled up 25 hits to rout Houston 21-7 on Tuesday night. That came a day after the Astros hit seven home runs in pounding the A's 15-0.

And on Sunday, the AL West-leading Astros wrecked the Mariners 21-1. Houston became the first team in the majors to score at least 20 runs in a game and allow at least 20 in a different game in a three-game span since the Brooklyn Bridegrooms in 1894, according to STATS.

Next up, A's lefty Brett Anderson (11-9, 4.19 ERA) pitches against Houston, which hasn't announced a starter.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Six more interesting pointspreads for this week?s college football:

? North Carolina @ Wake Forest (-3)

? Kansas State @ Mississippi State (-7.5)

? Maryland (-7) @ Temple

? Pittsburgh @ Penn State (-17)

? Eastern Michigan @ Illinois (-8)

? Akron @ Central Michigan (-3)

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) ESPN football analyst Brian Griese is very good; Monday night he produced an old set of notes he had as a player, when his coach was Jon Gruden, back when he played for the Buccaneers in 2004-05, 08. Gruden would hand-write the notes and distribute them to players.

Griese said ??..I never felt more prepared as a player than when I played for Gruden? which is obviously high praise from a guy who spent 11 years playing QB in the NFL, and whose dad was also a really good QB in the NFL.

12) Virginia is -7 over Florida State in Charlottesville Saturday; since 1997, Seminoles are 11-2 SU vs Virginia, 8-5 vs spread? FSU was favored in all 13 games, eight times by 12+ points. 10 of their 11 wins over the Cavaliers were by 14+ points. Teams haven?t met since 2014.

11) Actor Matthew McConaughey is apparently the Texas Longhorns? new Minister of Culture, which means that he is a prominent celebrity booster who helps pump people up when it comes to all things Texas Longhorn. People are impressed by celebrities.

From The Athletic: ?McConaughey once thought he would be a college or pro athlete ? he jokes he only gave up the dream about eight years ago ? and he believes if he hadn?t found the acting thing, he might have become a coach. Now he has the chance to speak with, influence and encourage college kids.?

Four years ago McConaughey started teaching a course at Texas, Script to Screen, in which film students receive a script from a film he?s working on and follow through all of its edits and iterations until production. The Moody College of Communications named him a professor of practice last week.

10) Carolina RB Christian McCaffrey had 29 touches for 209 yards in the Panthers? 30-27 loss to the Rams LW; great production if you have him in your fantasy league, but Carolina better find some other weapons, because 29 touches a week isn?t sustainable, especially in a week like this one, when the Panthers are playing on three days? rest.

9) Sunday afternoon in Queens, the Phillies had Andrew Knapp at bat with two men on and the pitcher (reliever Mike Morin) due up next; the Mets walked Knapp intentionally to get to the pitcher?s spot, because they wanted Morin out of the game, either that or they didn?t think the Phillies would hit for him. This strategy had one glaring problem.

Bryce Harper wasn?t in the game yet, so they walked Knapp to pitch to pinch-hitter Harper, and strategy does not get much dumber than that; it is baseball malpractice. Harper walked to force in a run. Philly won the game 10-7.

8) Mets? P Noah Syndergaard doesn?t want to throw to catcher Wilson Ramos; he pleaded his case to pitching strategist Jeremy Accardo, manager Mickey Callaway, and general manager Brodie Van Wagenen, then got annoyed when word of the private conversation became public.

7) Mets? bullpen has a 7.62 ERA in 80.1 IP in Jacob deGrom?s starts this season.

In totally unrelated news, Milwaukee star OF Christian Yelich fouled a ball off his knee Tuesday night and fractured his kneecap; he is done for this season.

6) Cleveland Browns had 19 snaps on 1st-and-10 Sunday; on 15 of those 19 plays, they were penalized and wound up with 1st or 2nd down and more than 10 yards to go. Not good.

5) Kentucky QB Terry Wilson is out for the season after hurting his left knee last week.

4) Jets signed K Sam Ficken and cut K Kaare Vedvik, who has been traded twice, cut once in the last six weeks. Vedvik missed a PAT and a field goal in Sunday?s 17-16 loss to Buffalo.

Jets also acquired WR DeMaryius Thomas from New England for a 6th round draft pick.

3) Houston Texans released veteran CB Aaron Colvin, just over a year into a 4-year, $34M contract; he gets $7.5M this year- that was guaranteed.

2) If you live in the Albany area and like pro wrestling, you will be interested to know that Ric Flair is doing an appearance at Colonie Center Sunday, at a hobby shop that is upstairs by the food court. They?re expecting a big crowd; get there early.

1) Patriots at Dolphins opened at New England -14.5, but as I type this, it is up to -18.5 or -19. Takes lot of onions to back a Dolphin squad that lost 59-10 last week, while New England was killing the Steelers, but Patriots have lost SU in five of their last six visits to south Florida.

CG Technology got a $55,000 bet Tuesday on the Patriots (-18) to cover; if that person read this site, he/she would know that over the last decade, Week 2 teams who won by 28+ points in Week 1 are 1-10 vs spread in their Week 2 game. We?ll see what happens.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Sonny Gray, Cincinnati Reds (10-6, 2.75 ERA, $794):
Yankees fans everywhere are asking themselves where this Sonny Gray was when he was in New York? Gray?s resurgence is one of the reasons the Reds will have an intriguing rotation heading into 2020 as she?s been nearly unhittable since the start of August. The right-hander has pitched to a 0.84 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP and is limiting opponents to a .149 batting average in seven starts over that span. Gray and the Reds are -150 road faves tonight in Seattle.

SLUMPING

Antonio Senzatela, Colorado Rockies (8-10, 7.19 ERA, $175):
Senzatela?s stint in Albuquerque didn?t help the right-hander regain his form. In three starts since getting called back up from the ?Topes, the right-hander has been rocked for a15.83 ERA and a 2.48 WHIP. And those numbers go to 16.55 and 2.47 in his last six starts overall. Senzatela and the Rockies are +130 home dogs for tonight?s matchup with the Cardinals. There is nice big 13.5 total for this one.

BOYD?S SUPER PUNCH-OUT!!

Matthew Boyd has one of the Tigers lone bright spots this season. He is among the leaders in strikeouts per nine innings and we have taken that stat to the bank almost all season long. The fire-balling lefty has recorded seven or more punchouts in 16 of his past 20 starts, and his strikeout total for today?s game against the Yankees is set at 6.5. The Yanks are a middle of the pack team when it comes to strikeouts and Boyd racked up 13 Ks in his lone start against New York back on April 3. Take the Over again tonight.

Villar hits record-setting HR, Orioles beat Dodgers 703
September 11, 2019
By The Associated Press

BALTIMORE (AP) Jonathan Villar hit a tiebreaking, record-setting three-run homer in the seventh inning, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-3 Wednesday night to end a six-game losing streak.

Villar's drive off Caleb Ferguson (1-2) was the 6,106th in the majors this season, breaking the previous mark of 6,105 in 2017. The milestone shot came on a fastball that Villar sent deep into the left-field seats to snap a 2-2 deadlock.

Pedro Severino added a two-run drive in the eighth.

Having clinched the NL West title on Tuesday night, manager Dave Roberts rested starters Joc Pederson and Justin Turner. Starting pitcher Ross Stripling toiled for only three innings before getting the rest of the night off and a first-inning double by David Freese was Los Angeles' only hit off John Means through the fifth.

The Dodgers finished with six hits, the most notable a two-run drive by A.J. Pollock.

The victory was Baltimore's 47th of the season, matching its total from last year. The Orioles are two defeats away from their second straight 100-loss season.

Shawn Armstrong (1-1) followed Means with 1 2/3 innings of one-hit relief to earn his second career victory in 100 appearances.

BLUE JAYS 8, RED SOX 0

TORONTO (AP) - Trent Thornton and three others combined on a two-hitter, Teoscar Hernandez and Rowdy Tellez homered, and Toronto beat Boston.

The slumping Red Sox have lost five straight. They had just four baserunners, and none advanced past second base.

Thornton (5-9) followed an opener with five hitless innings, walking one and striking out seven in his first career relief appearance.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three RBIs and Cavan Biggio had two hits and scored twice as the Blue Jays won their second straight following a season-long seven game losing streak.

Rafael Devers and Brock Holt each had singles for the Red Sox, who were blanked for the second time in three games.

BREWERS 7, MARLINS 5

MIAMI (AP) - Mike Moustakas homered twice, including a tiebreaking, two-run shot in the ninth as Milwaukee defeated Miami in its first game following star outfielder Christian Yelich's season-ending injury.

The Brewers won their sixth in a row. They began the day one game behind Chicago for the second NL wild-card spot.

Trent Grisham, one of the outfielders expected to get additional playing time in Yelich's absence, led off the game with a home run.

Moustakas broke a 5-all tie with a homer off Miami reliever Jose Urena (4-9).

Brent Suter (2-0) pitched three innings of scoreless relief for the win. Josh Hader struck out the side in the ninth for his 30th save.

METS 9, DIAMONDBACKS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Todd Frazier and Jeff McNeil each homered twice and surging New York beat Arizona ace Robbie Ray.

The Mets (75-70) have won the first three games of the pivotal four-game series to move past the Diamondbacks (75-71) in the race for the second NL wild card. New York entered Wednesday three games behind the Chicago Cubs, who played later Wednesday at San Diego.

Arizona has lost four straight.

Steven Matz (10-8) tossed six scoreless innings for the Mets, who jumped on Ray (12-8) for five runs before chasing him with two outs in the first. Wilson Ramos (groundout) and J.D. Davis (single) had RBIs before Frazier and Brandon Nimmo homered on consecutive pitches.

Ray gave up five hits and struck out one.

BRAVES 3, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tyler Flowers hit a three-run homer, Dallas Keuchel struck out eight in six innings and NL East-leading Atlanta beat Philadelphia.

The Braves reduced their magic number to eight. The Phillies entered two games behind the Cubs for the second NL wild-card spot.

Keuchel (8-5) gave up one run and three hits to win his fifth straight start. Mark Melancon finished for his 10th save in 10 tries with Atlanta.

Phillies starter Zach Eflin (8-12) allowed three unearned runs and three hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins hit consecutive singles to start the bottom half of the inning. Harper scored on Scott Kingery's fielder's choice grounder to cut it to 3-1.

NATIONALS 6, TWINS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Ryan Zimmerman homered and drove in three runs in support of Stephen Strasburg as Washington beat Minnesota for its third win in the last nine games.

Strasburg (17-6) gave up a two-run homer to Jorge Polanco in the third. He allowed only four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Trea Turner added a late home and four relievers kept the Twins from scoring.

The Nationals, who trailed Atlanta by 9+ games entering the evening in the National League East, took a 2+-game cushion between them and the Chicago Cubs for the two wild card spots. They were 3+ games above the cut, ahead of Milwaukee.

The Twins took a five-game lead on Cleveland in the American League Central, and six fewer losses than the Indians, into the night. The Indians were playing at the Los Angeles Angels.

Perez (10-7) finished five innings with six hits, five runs and three walks allowed and four strikeouts.

ATHLETICS 5, ASTROS 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Sean Murphy and Marcus Semien homered, hyped pitching prospect Jesus Luzardo looked sharp in his major league debut, and Oakland beat Houston.

Oakland won for the fourth time in five games. The A's closed within a half-game of Tampa Bay for the top AL wild card and stand a half-game ahead of Cleveland for the second spot.

Houston fell a half-game back of the New York Yankees for the best record in the majors. New York's scheduled game with Detroit was postponed.

Astros starter Jose Urquidy struck out 10 and pitched one-hit, one-run ball over five innings.

Josh James (5-1) took the loss. Astros star George Springer matched a career high with his 34th home run, a solo shot in the third.

Brett Anderson (12-9) yielded two runs and seven hits with four strikeouts in five innings. Liam Hendriks pitched the ninth for his 20th save.

ROYALS 8, WHITE SOX 6

CHICAGO (AP) - Jorge Soler hit a pair of two-run homers among his career high-matching four hits, leading Kansas City to a win over Chicago.

Adalberto Mondesi homered and had three hits, and Bubba Starling and Ryan O'Hearn also connected as the Royals beat Chicago for the fifth time in six games.

Rookie Eloy Jimenez homered, his 26th, and drove in four runs, and Jose Abreu added a two-run shot for the White Sox.

Glenn Sparkman (4-11) allowed three runs on four hits and snapped a nine-start winless streak. Ian Kennedy pitched the ninth for his 28th save.

Chicago starter Reynaldo Lopez (9-13) was roughed up for six runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

ROCKIES 2, CARDINALS 1

DENVER (AP) - Antonio Senzatela pitched six strong innings for his first win in two months, Ian Desmond hit a go-ahead home run and Colorado beat St. Louis.

Tony Wolters had two hits, including an RBI double. Paul Goldschmidt had an RBI double for the Cardinals' run.

Senzatela (9-10) allowed a run on four hits. He struck out five and walked two in his first win since July 14.

Dakota Hudson (15-7) pitched nearly as well, allowing two runs on four hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked five, one intentionally, and saw his career-high five-game winning streak snapped.

INDIANS 4, ANGELS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Carlos Santana and Francisco Lindor homered, Carlos Carrasco won in relief and Cleveland defeated Los Angeles.

Cleveland is a half-game behind Oakland for the second AL wild-card spot. The Indians trail AL Central-leading Minnesota by four games heading into a three-game series at home against the Twins this weekend.

Carrasco (5-7) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings with two walks and two strikeouts.

Adam Cimber struck out Albert Pujols with a runner on first for his first major league save.

Dillon Peters (3-3) took the loss.

RANGERS 10, RAYS 9

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rougned Odor hit a go-ahead, three-run homer and Texas beat Tampa Bay to end a six-game winning streak by the Rays, who have the AL's top wild-card spot.

Tampa Bay (87-60) had four runners thrown out on the bases and saw its lead over Oakland for the top wild-card spot trimmed to a half-game after the A's won at Houston.

After their first seven-run first inning at home in 13 years, the Rangers didn't score again until Odor's 25th homer with two outs in the seventh off Nick Anderson (3-1).

Matt Duffy's two-out RBI single in the first gave the Rays an early lead. They tied the game at 7 on Ji-Man Choi's three-run homer in the second, and went ahead 8-7 when Duffy hit a sacrifice fly to deep center with the bases loaded in the fourth.

Ian Gibaut (1-0) threw two scoreless innings for his first big league victory. Jose Leclerc earned his 12th save in 16 chances.

PIRATES 6, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Felipe Vazquez earned his 27th save two days after fighting a teammate in the clubhouse and Pittsburgh beat San Francisco.

Cole Tucker hit an RBI double for a key insurance run in the sixth, and Jose Osuna added a pair of doubles.

Jaylin Davis singled home a run, Corban Joseph had an RBI groundout and Mauricio Dubon drew a bases-loaded walk as the Giants got on the board before winner Michael Feliz (3-4) took over.

Adam Frazier and Kevin Kramer hit RBI singles for the Pirates.

Giants righty Logan Webb (1-2), making his fifth major league start, was done after 4 2/3.

Thursday?s 6-pack

Props for tonight?s NFL game:

? Over/under passing yards for Jameis Winston: 275.5

? Will Mike Evans score a TD? Yes +$120, No -$140

? Over/under receiving yards for Chris Godwin: 59.5

? Over/under completions for Cam Newton: 22.5

? Over/under rushing yards for Christian McCaffrey: 80.5

? Over/under receiving yards for DJ Moore: 60.5

Quote of the Day
?The greatest Cowboy of them all has taken his last ride. It will never be the same again. We could never thank him enough for all that he did for our university. He gave us everything he had and all that he asked in return was that we play by the rules and dream big. He was living proof that anything is possible if you?re wearing orange. ?
Oklahoma State AD Mike Holder, talking about billionaire booster T. Boone Pickens, who passed away Wednesday

Thursday?s quiz
What is the only division in the NFL where none of their teams lost last week?

Wednesday?s quiz
Ben Kingsley, Laurence Fishburne played the little kid?s chess mentors in the excellent movie Searching for Bobby Fischer.

Tuesday?s quiz
Oakland Raiders are only NFL team that shares their stadium with a major league baseball team; when the Raiders move to Las Vegas next year, there will be none.

**************************

Thursday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) Current Washington State football coach Mike Leach became the Texas Tech coach back in 2000; on his Tech team that first year were 23 guys who later became either college or NFL coaches, eight have been I-A head coaches, another eight have been coordinators.

Very impressive coaching tree he has: Kliff Kingsbury, Dana Holgorsen, Sonny Dykes, Art Briles, Dave Aranda (LSU?s DC), Lincoln Riley.

12) A?s 5, Astros 3? 21-year old Jesus Luzardo made his MLB debut and threw three innings, allowing only a solo home run. Very impressive debut.

11) Every time I watch Marcus Semien play shortstop for the A?s, I?m reminded what a great infield coach Ron Washington is; his hard work helped make Semien the player he is today.

10) NFL teams that impressed me in losses last week: Panthers, Colts, Texans.

9) Purdue LB Markus Bailey, team?s top tackler last season, is out for the year (knee).

8) NFL injury stuff:
? Chargers? TE Hunter Henry (broken leg) is out for the year.
? Raiders? S Johnathan Abram (shoulder) is out for the year.

7) Two pitchers on the Pittsburgh Pirates got into a fight with each other before Monday night?s game; one of them hurt his hand and needed surgery on that hand. Not good.

Sometimes I lose sight of just how long the baseball season is; 162 games in 182 days, and if you?re having a cruddy year, tensions can run high.

6) This nugget from Ralph Michaels:

Last 25 times Oklahoma was a road favorite, that game went over the total 22 times.

5) There were 90 touchdowns scored in NFL?s Week 1, the most in an opening week of the NFL in the Super Bowl era.

4) United States lost to France 89-79 Wednesday, in quarterfinals of the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China, snapping a streak of 58 straight wins in international competition.

3) Dodgers clinched their 7th straight division title Tuesday, but they haven?t won a World Series since 1988, and until they do, lot of their fans won?t be happy.

2) Jorge Soler?s season over/under for home runs back in the spring was 14.5; he hit his 43rd homer Wednesday night.

1) RIP to T. Boone Pickens, 91, the billionaire who donated over $500M to Oklahoma State; their football stadium is named after him.

LEADING OFF: Mets try to sweep D-Backs, Twins ailing
September 12, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

BIG BROOM

The Mets will try for a four-game sweep over Arizona amid a crowded NL wild-card race. The Diamondbacks had won 11 of 13 entering the series, but New York has shut them down completely, outscoring them 15-3 through the first three games. Right-hander Marcus Stroman (7-13, 3.42) will try to keep that domination going, although he hasn't been sharp since a July trade from Toronto.

Arizona will start lefty Alex Young (7-3, 3.38) in the finale. He gave up two hits and struck out 12 over eight innings in a 2-0 win over Cincinnati in his previous outing.

CY-ZING IT UP

Justin Verlander can enhance his Cy Young Award credentials when he starts for the AL West-leading Astros at Minute Maid Park against Oakland. Verlander tries for his major league-leading 19th win - he tops the AL with a 2.52 ERA and leads the majors with 200 innings. His 264 strikeouts are second to teammate Gerrit Cole's 281 for most in the big league.

Homer Bailey (12-8, 4.87 ERA) has gone 3-0 with a 2.35 ERA over his last five starts. The A's hold a half-game edge over Cleveland for the second AL wild-card spot.

REUNITED

Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts and the Red Sox hitters will try to bust a miserable slump against an old friend. Toronto's Clay Buchholz (1-4, 5.31) went 81-61 over 10 seasons with Boston, and he's slated to face his former teammates for the first time.

The Red Sox have dropped five straight and been shut out in two of their past three games since firing president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. The skid includes a meager two-hit effort against four Blue Jays pitchers Wednesday night. Buchholz has a 3.57 ERA in three starts since ending a 3 1/2-month stint on the injured list with a sore shoulder.

MINNESOTA MALADIES

The Twins were missing first baseman C.J. Cron (thumb), third baseman Miguel Sano (back), outfielder Max Kepler (shoulder) and infielder/outfielder Marwin Gonzalez (abdominal area) in their 6-2 loss to Washington on Wednesday night.

The AL Central leaders are continuing a cautious approach toward injuries, with outfielder Byron Buxton (shoulder) done for the season and Jake Cave (groin) still working his way back.

HILLY ROAD

Dodgers lefty Rich Hill (4-1, 2.55 ERA) pitches in the majors for the first time since June 19. He's been out because of a forearm strain.

Hill starts for the NL West champions as they take on Baltimore at Camden Yards.
