Springer 3 HRs, Verlander 20th win, Astros clinch AL West
September 22, 2019
By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) George Springer hit a career-high three homers, Justin Verlander posted his MLB-leading 20th win and the Houston Astros clinched their third straight AL West title in grand fashion, routing the Los Angeles Angels 13-5 on Sunday.

A crowd at Minute Maid Park that was cheering from Verlander's first pitch got even louder as Springer homered three times in the first four innings. The Astros kept breaking away and improved to 102-54, a half-game ahead of the New York Yankees for the best record in the majors.

After the final out, the Astros held a bouncing group hug in the middle of the diamond and posed for a team picture. It hasn't been determined who they will face in the playoffs as they try for their second World Series championship in three years.

Springer, the MVP of the 2017 World Series, had two chances to tie the big league record for home runs in a game. He popped up with the bases loaded in the fifth and grounded out in the seventh.

Verlander (20-6) yielded six hits and two runs in five innings to reach 20 wins for the second time in his career and the first since winning the AL MVP and Cy Young Award in 2011 when he went 24-5 for Detroit. This year's AL Cy Young front-runner struck out five to leave him six strikeouts shy of becoming the 18th pitcher in MLB history to reach 3,000.

Jose Rodriguez (0-1) allowed three runs in two innings.

CARDINALS 3, CUBS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt hit a tiebreaking double in the ninth inning and St. Louis clinched a playoff spot by rallying past Chicago for its first four-game sweep at Wrigley Field in almost a century.

NL Central-leading St. Louis qualified for the postseason for the first time since 2015 and stayed three games ahead of Milwaukee. It was the fifth consecutive win for the Cardinals, who came back for a 9-8 victory Saturday on consecutive homers by Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong against Craig Kimbrel in the ninth.

The time, Chicago manager Joe Maddon sent a dominant Yu Darvish (6-8) back to the mound for the ninth to go for his first complete game since 2014. But the result was the same in the Cubs' fifth consecutive one-run loss.

Miles Mikolas pitched 7 2/3 innings of two-run ball and Tyler Webb (2-1) got the last out of the eighth for the win. Andrew Miller worked the ninth for his sixth save.

BREWERS 4, PIRATES 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Eric Thames hit two home runs and Milwaukee took a combined perfect game into the seventh inning to beat Pittsburgh and match Washington atop the NL wild-card standings.

Orlando Arcia connected for the Brewers, but the shortstop also let a line drive tip off his glove with one out in the seventh for a hit that ended the perfect game bid in Milwaukee's regular season home finale.

Milwaukee has won eight of nine. Trevor Williams (7-8) took the loss for the Pirates, who lost their ninth straight.

Gio Gonzalez (3-2) picked up the win. Josh Hader got four outs for his 35th save in 41 tries.

MARLINS 5, NATIONALS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Three relievers each gave up an extra-base hit in a seventh-inning meltdown, and Washington's streak of 11 consecutive wins against Miami ended in a loss that dropped the Nationals into a tie with Milwaukee for the top NL wild card.

Hunter Strickland and Wander Suero (6-9) allowed two runs apiece in the seventh, and Tanner Rainey gave up an RBI triple by Starlin Castro as the Marlins rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take a 5-3 lead.

The bullpen collapse came against the Nationals' favorite foils. Miami averted a three-game sweep and finished 4-15 against Washington this year.

Jeff Brigham, helped when left fielder Harold Ramirez robbed Adam Eaton of a hit, pitched a perfect ninth for his first career save. Jarlin Garcia (4-2) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

DODGERS 7, ROCKIES 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Hyun-Jin Ryu hit a home run and pitched seven solid innings, Cody Bellinger hit a grand slam and Los Angeles reached the 100-win mark.

With the Dodgers still undecided on a starter for the NL Division Series opener Oct. 3, Ryu (13-5) made his case by giving up three runs and six hits over seven innings with no walks and eight strikeouts. His first career home run was a bonus.

The Dodgers reduced their magic number for clinching the best record in the NL to one.

Los Angeles joined Houston and the New York Yankees to give the major leagues three 100-game winners for the third straight season. Before 2017, the only years with three 100-win teams were 1942, 1977, 1998, 2002 and 2003.

Sam Hilliard hit a two-run home run in the seventh, his sixth, for the last-place Rockies. Antonio Senzatela (10-11) took the loss.

INDIANS 10, PHILLIES 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Oscar Mercado hit a three-run homer, Yasiel Puig drove a three-run double and Cleveland moved into a tie for the second AL wild card.

Carlos Carrasco (6-7) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings for his longest relief appearance since his midseason cancer diagnosis, and the Indians matched the Tampa Bay Rays with six games to play. Both teams are 92-64 and two games behind Oakland, which leads the wild-card race.

Mercado's 14th home run off Vince Velasquez (7-8) broke a 1-all tie in the fifth. The Indians put the game away with a six-run seventh, which included Puig's double and a two-run homer by Franmil Reyes.

YANKEES 8, BLUE JAYS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Luis Severino (1-0) struck out nine over five scoreless innings for his first win of the season, and New York hit three home runs as it beat Toronto in its regular season home finale.

New York (102-55) moved 47 games over .500 for the first time since its record-setting 114-victory season in 1998. The AL East champions clinched home-field advantage in the AL Division Series starting Oct. 4 and are competing with Houston for the top record in the AL.

Aaron Judge hit his 26th homer this season and 14th in his last 29 games. Brett Gardner added a three-run drive and DJ LeMahieu made it 6-0 with a two-run homer in the second.

Toronto opener Wilmer Font (2-3) gave up four runs in the first and was followed by Trent Thornton.

TWINS 12, ROYALS 8

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Nelson Cruz hit his 400th career home run, Miguel Sano connected twice and Minnesota powered past Kansas City to remain four games ahead of Cleveland for the AL Central lead.

Kansas City joined Baltimore, Detroit and Miami with 100 losses, only the second time in major league history there have been four 100-loss teams in one season.

Sano homered in the first and third innings. Sano hit a three-run drive during the big first inning against starter Jorge Lopez (4-9), who lasted just 2 1/3 innings. Zack Littell (6-0) earned the win in relief.

RANGERS 8, ATHLETICS 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Willie Calhoun hit two of Texas' five homers and the Rangers slowed Oakland's wild-card push.

The A's had won 10 of 11 but couldn't stretch their two-game lead over Tampa Bay for the top AL wild card.

Texas ended a seven-game skid. Shin-Soo Choo, Elvis Andrus and Nomar Mazara all went deep. Rangers starter Lance Lynn (15-11) matched his career high with 12 strikeouts to end a five-game losing streak.

Jurickson Profar had three hits and an RBI for the A's. Marcus Semien doubled twice.

Oakland starter Tanner Roark (10-9) saw his three-game winning streak halted. He allowed five runs and six hits in three innings.

RED SOX 7, RAYS 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Nathan Eovaldi (2-0) pitched six gritty innings, Christian Vazquez hit a three-run homer and Boston beat playoff-contending Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay dropped into a tie with Cleveland for the second AL wild card, and both teams trail Oakland by two games for the top spot.

Boston designated hitter J.D. Martinez drove in two runs and is one RBI away from his third consecutive and fourth overall season of at least 35 homers and 100 RBIs. Martinez had an RBI single and Vazquez hit his homer off Ryan Yarbrough (11-5) as Boston went up 4-0 in the first.

Rays two-way player Brendan McKay got his first major league homer.

GIANTS 4, BRAVES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Rookie Logan Webb allowed only two hits and one run in six innings, Evan Longoria drove in two runs with two hits and San Francisco beat Dallas Keuchel (8-7) and Atlanta.

Braves manager Brian Snitker, preparing the NL East champions for the playoffs, rested outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr., third baseman Josh Donaldson and second baseman Ozzie Albies. Albies had his second straight day off before reaching on a pinch-hit single in the ninth.

Webb (2-2) was sharp in his seventh start, preventing the Braves from a three-game sweep in their final regular-season game at SunTrust Park. Relievers Tyler Rogers and Will Smith closed out the combined five-hitter. Smith pitched the ninth for his 34th save.

PADRES 6, DIAMONDBACKS 4, 10 INNINGS

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Rookie Seth Mejias-Brean hit a two-run homer with no outs in the 10th inning and San Diego beat Arizona to give interim manager Rod Barajas his first win since taking over for the fired Andy Green.

Mejias-Brean homered off Yoan Lopez (2-7) on a 1-1 pitch for his second overall and his first walkoff homer. Greg Garcia was aboard on a leadoff double.

San Diego's Matt Strahm (6-10) pitched a perfect 10th for the win.

METS 6, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Michael Conforto homered to cap a four-run first inning and New York gave its faint playoff hopes a boost. J.D. Davis and Brandon Nimmo also connected for the Mets, who remained 4 + games behind Milwaukee for the second NL wild card.

New York starter Marcus Stroman walked the bases loaded with two outs and a 4-2 lead in the fifth. Brad Brach (5-4) came on to get Eugenio Suarez to pop up on the first pitch.

Trevor Bauer (11-13), in his 10th start since being acquired from Cleveland at the trade deadline, didn't walk anybody, but he hit two batters in seven innings. He gave up six hits and five runs with eight strikeouts.

TIGERS 6, WHITE SOX 3

DETROIT (AP) - Willi Castro hit his first major league homer, one of four connections by Detroit in a win over Chicago. Jeimer Candelario, Gordon Beckham and Victor Reyes also went deep.

Detroit's Matthew Boyd (9-11), who missed his last start after the death of his grandfather, gave up three runs, eight hits and two walks in five innings. Joe Jimenez pitched the ninth for his eighth save.

The White Sox got homers from Eloy Jimenez and Wellington Castillo but lost for the 17th time in 25 games. White Sox starter Reynaldo Lopez (9-15) allowed five runs.

ORIOLES 2, MARINERS 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Chris Davis homered off Marco Gonzales (16-12) in the seventh inning to carry Baltimore past Seattle.

Orioles left-hander John Means (11-11) allowed one run and seven hits over seven sharp innings in the penultimate start of an All-Star rookie season. He walked one and struck out four, including Domingo Santana with his final pitch.

Richard Bleier finished for his fourth save in a game that took only 2 hours, 11 minutes.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals (13-9, 3.83 ERA, $576):
Wainwright, like most Cardinals starters, has been on fire recently. In September he's gone 4-0 with a 0.33 ERA and a WHIP of 0.93. Tonight, Wainwright and the Cards will look to build on their three-game lead in the NL Central as they head to Arizona to face the Diamondbacks.

St. Louis is a -147 fave on the road but it is worth mentioning that Wainwright has struggled in away starts this year. In 14 games on the road he's 4-6 with a 6.03 ERA and a BAA of .292.

SLUMPING

Clay Bucholtz, Toronto Blue Jays (1-5, 6.48 ERA, $-9):
Bucholtz hasn't been effective since making the move to the Great White North but he's been especially poor lately. In September he's gone 0-2 in three starts with an ERA of 9.22 and a BAA of .381.

His last start was against the Orioles last Wednesday and he was lucky to escape with a no-decision after he gave up seven runs in 3 2-3 innings. He gets a rematch against the Orioles today and the Jays are -135 faves at home. With the Over hitting in each of the last three games between these sides, backing the O9.5 today makes a lot of sense.

3 STRIKES

RECOVERING AT A SNELL'S PACE

Tampa Bay's Blake Snell might be ready to pitch some significant innings today after getting only two innings of work last week against the Dodgers. He was very effective in those two innings, striking out four batters and not allowing a single batter to reach base.

Snell is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his elbow which kept him out of the lineup for about a month and a half. Prior to his surgery he was beginning to recover the form that made him the AL Cy Young winner in 2019, with the Rays going 4-0 over his last four starts while Snell recorded an ERA of 1.64.

Tampa Bay is a -200 favorite at home against the Red Sox tonight. The Rays are 4-0 in Snell's last six starts against the BoSox and are 6-1 in the previous seven meetings in the head to head.

OVER TRENDS ABOUND

Staying with the Red Sox-Rays game, if you're betting the total keep in mind that umpire Chris Conroy has been an absolute Over machine. Games Conroy has called have gone 17-9-1 to the Over this season, including 10-2-1 over his last 13 contests.

The Over has also gone 5-0-1 in the last six meetings between Boston and Tampa Bay. And it just so happens that the O/U is an identical 5-0-1 in Tampa Bay's last six games and Bostons' last six games. The O8.5 might be worth a look.

2019 SEASON TRENDS

As the regular season winds down now is a good time as any to take a look at trends that have made bettors money in 2019:

Best Under Bet - The Cincinnati Reds have been the best Under bet this year, both at home and away. They've gone 90-59-7 to the Under for a rate of 60.4 percent.

Best Over Bet - Another NL Central doormat, the Pirates, have been the most reliable Over bet going 90-60-6 to the Over. They've hit Overs at an even more impressive rate at home going 45-25-4 OU. On the road the Yankees have been the top Over bet, with the Over cashing in 64.3 percent of their away contests.

Best Runline Bet - The Yankees have also been the best team to back on the runline as a favorite. They've gone 75-56 as a fave on the RL.

Best Money Team - The Athletics have been the best money team making bettors $2504 based on $100 units. The Dodgers have been the best money team at home earning $1745, while the Twins have been the best money team on the road banking $2487.

The worst money team? The Tigers who lost bettors $3859 this season. The second worst were the defending champion Red Sox who sit at $-2578.

Rays rally past Red Sox for 7-4 win
September 23, 2019
By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Ji-Man Choi, Brandon Lowe and Willy Adames homered during Tampa Bay's six-run fourth inning, and the Rays moved into sole possession of the second AL wild card by rallying for a 7-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.

The Rays hold a half-game lead over Cleveland, which had the day off.

The announced attendance was 8,779.

Boston slugger J.D. Martinez drove in a run to become the ninth player in franchise history to have at least 35 homers and 100 RBIs in multiple seasons. The list also includes David Ortiz, Jim Rice, Carl Yastrzemski and Ted Williams.

Colin Poche, the ninth Tampa Bay pitcher, struck out Christian Vazquez and Xander Bogaerts with two on in the ninth for his second save. Austin Pruitt (3-0) worked one inning.

Bobby Poyner (0-1) got the loss.

NATIONALS 7, PHILLIES 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Patrick Corbin pitched six effective innings, and the Nationals strengthened their playoff positioning.

Adam Eaton, Yan Gomes and Trea Turner homered for Washington, which moved a half-game ahead of idle Milwaukee for the top spot in the wild-card standings. The Nationals reduced their magic number to clinch a playoff berth to three.

Corbin (14-7) matched his career high for wins in the first season of a $140 million, six-year contract.

Philadelphia's Zach Eflin (9-13) permitted five runs and eight hits in five innings. The Phillies were pushed to the brink of elimination after beginning the season with great expectations after signing former Washington slugger Bryce Harper to a blockbuster deal.

MARLINS 8, METS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Steven Matz allowed two homers to Jorge Alfaro, including a grand slam, and the Mets lost to the Marlins to dim their fading postseason hopes.

Amed Rosario cut into Miami's big lead with his own slam, but the Mets dropped five games behind idle Milwaukee for the final NL playoff spot with six games remaining. They also trail Washington by 5 1/2 games for the top wild card after the Nationals beat Philadelphia 7-2.

New York (81-75) would be locked out of the postseason with a loss Tuesday and victories by Washington and Milwaukee.

Matz (10-10) permitted six runs in five-plus innings in his 100th big league start.

Marlins left-hander Caleb Smith (10-10) allowed four runs in six innings.

BLUE JAYS 11, ORIOLES 10

LEADING OFF: Yost begins final homestand with Royals
September 23, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

FINAL DAYS

The Kansas City Royals host the Atlanta Braves in their first game since manager Ned Yost announced Monday he plans to retire at the end of the season. The 65-year-old Yost, who has been on a year-to-year contract, is the only manager to lead the Royals to back-to-back World Series, losing to the Giants in seven games in 2014 and beating the Mets in five the following year. Kansas City plays two games against Atlanta before finishing the season with a weekend series at home against Minnesota.

FINAL DAYS II

The Texas Rangers begin their last homestand at their 25-year-old stadium, first known as The Ballpark in Arlington. The Rangers are moving across the street into a $1 billion-plus air-conditioned stadium with a retractable roof. After Boston comes to town for a three-game series, Texas finishes the season with three games against the AL East champion New York Yankees. Edinson Volquez and Ariel Jurado are expected to pitch Tuesday night against Boston, and Eduardo Rodriguez goes for his 19th win for the Red Sox.

GERRIT AND J.R.

Houston ace Gerrit Cole could break the club record for strikeouts when the Astros play the first of two games against the Mariners in Seattle. The 29-year-old Cole fanned 10 in eight innings in a 3-2 victory over Texas on Wednesday, giving him 302 strikeouts on the year. The single-season Astros record is 313 Ks by J.R. Richard in 1979. Cole and teammate Justin Verlander are the front-runners for the AL Cy Young Award. Cole is 14-0 with a 1.87 ERA in his last 20 starts.

AWAITING WORD

The Chicago Cubs could have an update on star third baseman Kris Bryant after he sprained his right ankle during Sunday's 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. The 2016 NL MVP got hurt when he stepped hard on first base and tumbled to the ground while trying to beat out a double play in the third inning. He was scheduled for an MRI on Monday after X-rays taken at Wrigley Field were negative. Chicago has dropped six in a row, the last five by one run, heading into the opener of a three-game set at Pittsburgh.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six interesting spreads for this week?s college football card:

? Penn State (-6.5) @ Maryland

? Arizona State @ California (-4.5)

? Wake Forest (-6.5) @ Boston College

? Iowa State (-2.5) @ Baylor

? Minnesota @ Purdue (-1)

? Washington State # Utah (-5)

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Bears 31, Redskins 15:
? Trubisky was 20-23/173 passing in first half.
? Chicago led 28-3 at half, but it was 28-13 and Redskins had ball on Chicago?s 15-yard line before Keenum lost a fumble.

? If Keenum isn?t going to protect the ball, might as well start rookie QB Haskins now; Redskins? bye isn?t until Week 10. Haskins needs to learn; you learn by doing.
? Last 18 times Redskins hosted Monday Night Football, they lost 17 times.

12) San Diego Padres fired manager Andy Green Saturday, but they probably fired the wrong guy. GM AJ Preller has been GM of the Padres since August 2014; since ?15, San Diego is 338-454, their last playoff appearance was in 2006.

Preller was once suspended by MLB for a month in the late 2000?s when he worked for the Texas Rangers in their international operations department; MLB later suspended Preller for another 30 days without pay in 2016 following an investigation into his trade of P Drew Pomeranz from San Diego to the Red Sox.

The guy is a cheater who got caught by MLB twice; he hasn?t improved the Padres very much, despite San Diego?s ownership shelling out major money on free agents Eric Hosmer and Manny Machado. How does he keep his job?

11) Royals? manager Ned Yost, who won a World Series title four years ago, will retire after this week?s games wind up. Yost managed the Royals since 2010.

10) When Buffalo Bills scored a TD early in their game Sunday, Cincinnati jumped offsides on the PAT, so Buffalo took the penalty, went for two points and grabbed an early 8-0 lead. Not a lot of coaches do that.

9) SouthPoint posts a fun prop on football days; which team will score the first TD in the early games? Green Bay (8-1) was Sunday?s winner this past week.

8) Milwaukee Brewers are averaging 35,870 fans per home game; Minnesota Twins are averaging 28,191, even though they?re having a great breakthrough season. Milwaukee has a dome at Miller Park, so fans never have to worry about the weather; Minnesota doesn?t.

Why didn?t the Twins build a retractable domed stadium? They cost themselves a lot of money both in April and September, when the weather is often dicey.

7) Last week, NBA changed a rule, making teams set their starting lineup 30 minutes before tip-off, as opposed to 10 minutes before tip-off, which helps coaches and gamblers.

6) On April 10, the Indians lost 4-1 in Detroit; it was the only time in 19 meetings this season that the hapless Tigers beat Cleveland. Indians are in a dogfight for the AL Wild Card; they?re 18-1 vs Detroit, 74-63 vs everyone else.

5) Baltimore Orioles have lost 100+ games for the second year in a row for the first time ever; hard to believe that they were in the playoffs three short years ago, losing the Wild Card game 5-2 to Toronto in 11 innings.

4) Handicapping is difficult: we mentioned the other day how seven QB?s started in NFL?s Week 3 who didn?t start in Week 1; you figure those teams might be at a disadvantage, but the seven teams went 6-1 against the spread in Week 3.

3) World Series starts the same night as the NBA regular season, which is a little bit odd on the NBA?s part. Maybe they figure the same people aren?t watching both sports.

2) Miami Dolphins are 17-point home underdogs agains the Chargers Sunday; this is only the fifth time since 1980 that an NFL team was a road favorite of 17+ points.

Biggest NFL pointspread ever? The winless ?76 Tampa Bay Buccaneers were +27 at Pittsburgh and lost 42-0, but they were an expansion team, and a very bad one.

1) Tip of the cap to the people at the Apple Store in Crossgates **** here in Albany; picked up a new iPhone Friday, and as usual, their service was excellent. Scott was very patient and answered all my questions; he roots for the Dolphins, so he has to be patient.
