Red Sox beat Verlander, Astros 4-1 to avoid 3-game sweep
May 26, 2019
By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) Rafael Devers homered off Justin Verlander, and the Boston Red Sox took advantage of two errors by the Houston Astros to avoid a series sweep with a 4-1 victory Sunday.

Eduardo Rodriguez (5-3) held Houston to one run and four hits in six innings, improving to 5-1 in his last eight starts.

The Astros lost for just the fifth time in 22 games and finished the regular season 4-2 against the Red Sox, who beat them 4-1 in the ALCS last season on the way to a World Series championship.

Devers' solo shot in the fourth gave the Red Sox a 2-1 lead. It was Devers' seventh homer of the season and fourth in six games.

Marcus Walden earned his second major league save and first this season.

Verlander (8-2) permitted three runs and six hits in seven innings, striking out six.

ATHLETICS 7, MARINERS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Matt Chapman homered for the second consecutive day, Josh Phegley also went deep and had three RBIs, and the streaking Oakland Athletics won their ninth straight, beating Seattle to complete a three-game sweep.

Brett Anderson allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings to win after being forced out of his previous start with a cervical strain. Anderson (6-3) struck out four and walked four, but got the Mariners to hit into double plays in three straight innings.

Seattle's Jay Bruce hit his 300th career double in the second and his 299th homer in the seventh. Bruce needs one home run to become the eighth active player with 300 doubles and 300 homers.

Mike Leake (3-6) took the loss.

ROYALS 8, YANKEES 7, 10 INNINGS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Whit Merrifield got a fortunate hop on an RBI single in the 10th inning, and Kansas City beat New York despite blowing a six-run lead.

Merrifield hit a sharp, two-out grounder toward third baseman Gio Urshela with speedster Billy Hamilton at second. The ball skipped over Urshela's head, giving Hamilton time to race home. Hamilton had walked against Jonathan Holder (3-2) and stole second.

Hunter Dozier and Jorge Soler homered on back-to-back pitches in the fifth inning and Martin Maldonado and Ryan O'Hearn also went deep as Kansas City hit four home runs in a game for the first time this season. New York's Aaron Hicks tied it in the ninth with a two-run single off Ian Kennedy as the Yankees scored three runs with two outs to make it 7-all.

Kevin McCarthy (2-1) threw a scoreless 10th to earn the win.

DODGERS 11, PIRATES 7

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Justin Turner had five hits after taking a day off, Joc Pederson homered during a six-run sixth inning that featured consecutive bases-loaded plunkings and Los Angeles beat Pittsburgh to complete a three-game sweep.

Matt Beaty had four RBIs and Corey Seager drove in two for the Dodgers, who got five innings of three-run ball from Kenta Maeda (6-2) in his return from the injured list. Los Angeles has won nine of 11.

Chris Archer (1-5) lost his fifth straight start. He allowed six walks and six hits over five innings of four-run ball, striking out three while throwing 105 pitches.

Montana DuRapau drilled Kike Hernandez with a 3-2 pitch to put the Dodgers up 7-3 in the sixth. Dovydas Neverauskas relieved and plunked Austin Barnes, then gave up two more runs.

BREWERS 9, PHILLIES 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Brandon Woodruff allowed a solo homer but was otherwise perfect over eight innings, Christian Yelich hit his NL-leading 21st home run and Milwaukee connected five times against Philadelphia.

Woodruff (7-1) retired his first 15 batters before Andrew Knapp opened the sixth with his first homer. Woodruff struck out a career-high 10, fanning the final batter in each of his innings while matching a career high with 24 outs - a mark he set in his previous outing against Atlanta.

Ben Gamel had two homers for the Brewers, and Hernan Perez and Yasmani Grandal also went yard. Matt Albers finished with a perfect ninth.

Zach Eflin (5-5) allowed three runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings.

RAYS 6, INDIANS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Austin Meadows led off the game with a home run and was 4 for 4 with three RBIs, leading Tampa Bay over reeling Cleveland.

Tampa Bay (31-19) is a season-high 12 games over .500 after taking three of four in the series. The Indians (26-26) fell to .500 for the first time since April 4, when they were 3-3. Cleveland has dropped six of seven and finished 4-7 on its longest homestand of the season.

Jalen Beeks (4-0), who took over after Ryne Stanek got the first five outs, gave up two hits in 4 2/3 scoreless innings.

Cleveland scored twice in the ninth to cut into a 6-1 lead, but Jose Alvarado struck out Oscar Mercado and retired Carlos Santana with two on for his sixth save.

Trevor Bauer (4-4) allowed four runs in six innings and hasn't won since April 30.

TWINS 7, WHITE SOX 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jake Odorizzi permitted one hit in 5 1/3 scoreless innings, and Eddie Rosario and Max Kepler each hit a three-run homer as Minnesota completed a sweep of Chicago.

Odorizzi (7-2) won his seventh straight decision and finished without allowing a run for the fifth time in his past six starts. He combined with four relievers for Minnesota's sixth shutout of the season.

The Twins have won 11 of their past 12 games and swept a series for the seventh time this year. They swept eight series all of last season.

Rosario hit his 16th home run, second in the American League to Houston's George Springer, to cap a four-run third against starter Dylan Covey. Kepler's 12th home run came in the seventh, traveling an estimated 429 feet off the new wall of juniper bushes in center field.

Minnesota has a major league-best 104 home runs this season and has the top home run differential at plus-43.

Covey (0-4) allowed four runs in six innings.

REDS 10, CUBS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Nick Senzel had three hits, scored four times and cut down a runner at the plate, helping Tanner Roark and the Reds beat the Cubs.

Led by Senzel, the top third of Cincinnati's lineup collected seven of the team's season-high 17 hits. Joey Votto singled twice in his third consecutive multihit game, and Eugenio Suarez finished with two hits and three RBIs.

The last-place Reds also got five scoreless innings from Roark (4-3) in the rubber game of their weekend set against the NL Central leaders. Cincinnati lost 14 of its previous 19 series against Chicago.

The Cubs were hurt by a shaky performance by Jose Quintana (4-4), and their decidedly dreary afternoon got even worse when Kris Bryant departed with an injury after colliding with center fielder Jason Heyward in the sixth inning.

BLUE JAYS 10, PADRES 1

TORONTO (AP) - Cavan Biggio had three hits, including his first career home run, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had four hits and homered for the third straight game, and the Blue Jays beat San Diego.

Toronto's Justin Smoak hit two home runs, a two-run shot off Luis Perdomo in the fifth inning and a three-run drive off Adam Warren in the eighth.

With his Hall of Fame father Craig watching from the stands, Biggio got his first hit with a ground single through the right side in the second. He hit a solo home run into the fourth deck off left-hander Matt Wisler in the fourth, then added an RBI single in Toronto's four-run fifth.

Marcus Stroman (3-6) pitched five innings to win consecutive starts for the first time this season.

Robbie Erlin (0-1) allowed one run and three hits in two innings.

METS 4, TIGERS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Zack Wheeler pitched into the eighth inning, Todd Frazier delivered a clever push bunt and New York kept up a run of comebacks by beating Detroit for its sixth win in seven games.

Adeiny Hechavarria's three-run homer off rookie starter Spencer Turnbull (2-4) helped the Mets rally from an early 3-0 deficit and reach the .500 mark. New York has trailed in all but one of these recent victories, with each of them coming at Citi Field.

Nicholas Castellanos homered and drove in three runs for the Tigers, who have lost 11 of 12.

Wheeler (4-3) retired 13 batters in a row and singled twice, boosting his batting average to .308.

Edwin Diaz escaped a jam in the ninth for his 13th save in 14 chances.

NATIONALS 9, MARLINS 6

WASHINGTON (AP) - Howie Kendrick hit his eighth homer, drove in three runs and finished with three hits as Washington beat Miami.

Brian Dozier doubled in two during Washington's four-run rally with two outs in the third inning against Caleb Smith (3-2), who had his shortest outing of the season.

The Nationals have won the first three games against NL-worst Miami in a four-game series that wraps Monday. They entered on a five-game losing streak.

Erick Fedde (1-0) worked five scoreless innings for his first win since Sept. 11 last year. He made his second start in place of injured Anibal Sanchez.

Michael A. Taylor had an RBI double in the sixth and Anthony Rendon added a two-run triple.

ROCKIES 8, ORIOLES 7

DENVER (AP) - Nolan Arenado homered for the third straight game, pitcher German Marquez tripled and drove in three runs, and Colorado scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally past Baltimore.

Ian Desmond drew a bases-loaded walk from Mychal Givens to tie it, and Tony Wolters hit a sacrifice fly to score pinch-running pitcher Jeff Hoffman with the winning run.

Wolters had three hits for the Rockies, who took two of three in the interleague series - a rare Baltimore visit to Coors Field. The major league-worst Orioles (16-37) have dropped eight of nine and haven't won a series since April 22-24 against the White Sox.

Trey Mancini gave Baltimore a 7-6 lead with a two-run triple in the eighth off winner Scott Oberg (3-0).

Paul Fry (0-2) took the loss.

Baltimore scored three runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to rally from a 5-1 deficit.

ANGELS 7, RANGERS 6

ANAHEIM (AP) - Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun scored on wild pitches in a six-run seventh inning that gave Los Angeles a comeback win over Texas.

Trout hit a solo shot in the first, his 12th home run of the year. He was 2 for 3 with a walk and two RBIs.

Shohei Ohtani tied it at 5 in the seventh with a sacrifice fly off reliever Jeffrey Springs (2-1). Trout and Calhoun then scored on wild pitches in consecutive plate appearances. Luis Rengifo had a two-run single during the rally.

With runners at the corners, pinch-hitter Nomar Mazara grounded out against Justin Anderson to end it. Anderson allowed an RBI double to Shin-Soo Choo but earned his first save of the season.

Choo and Hunter Pence each hit a solo homer for Texas.

Andrew Heaney pitched well in his season debut for Los Angeles. Heaney, bothered by elbow inflammation in spring training, struck out 10 and allowed two hits - both home runs - in five innings.

David Fletcher had three hits for the Angels. Luis Garcia (1-1) worked a scoreless inning for the win.

DIAMONDBACKS 6, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Ketel Marte homered for the third time in three games, Eduardo Escobar had three hits and Arizona completed a sweep of San Francisco, tying a franchise record for scoring in a three-game series.

Mike Yastrzemski, the 23-year-old grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, had the first three hits of his career for the Giants, who lost their fifth straight and finished a 1-6 homestand.

The Diamondbacks outscored the Giants 34-8 in the series, matching a club mark they set at home in September 2016 against Colorado.

Marte went deep in the first inning off Shaun Anderson (0-1), who gave up six runs - four earned - and nine hits with two wild pitches in five innings.

Luke Weaver (4-3) pitched five-plus innings of six-hit ball for the win. He struck out six and gave up one run before exiting with right forearm tightness.

BRAVES 4, CARDINALS 3 10 INNINGS

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

NBA Finals odds:

Warriors in 4: 5-1

Warriors in 5: 7-2

Warriors in 6: +275

Warriors in 7: 5-1

Raptors in 4: 25-1

Raptors in 5: 10-1

Raptors in 6: 12-1

Raptors in 7: 6-1

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend??.

13) We need to recognize more people who do good stuff in their free time. Toronto Raptors? Marc Gasol spent his offseason last year volunteering on a boat in the Mediterranean Sea with a mission to rescue and assist migrants and recover the bodies of those lost at sea.

12) Twins 7, White Sox 0? In their last 20 games, Minnesota has scored 149 runs, an average of 7.45 runs per game. Over is 7-4 in their last 11 games.

11) Braves 4, Cardinals 3 (10)? St Louis led 3-0 in 9th inning, blew the lead and lost for the 16th time in their last 22 games. Atlanta scored the winning run on a bases loaded walk.

Coming into the game, major league teams were 423-2 this season when leading by 3+ runs after eight innings. Now they?re 423-3.

10) Bullpens have become so hit/miss lately; lot of bettors are leaning towards betting on first five inning results, rather than nine-inning results. Keeps the starting pitcher as the essential piece of the equation.

9) Mets 4, Tigers 3? Mets split their last dozen games; this was their only win by a starting pitcher in that span. Hechevarria homered to the opposite field for the winning homer.

8) Baltimore Ravens will be using a completely new offense in 2019, but no one told the team?s QB, Lamar Jackson. Odd way to do business.

7) College basketball transfer portal:
? Joel Ntambwe bolts from UNLV to Texas Tech.

Texas Tech is coached by Chris Beard, who was UNLV?s coach for three weeks in March 2016, before jumping to the Red Raiders. This should make him even more popular in Las Vegas.

6) NBA Finals start Thursday in Toronto:
? Home team has gone 19-3 SU in Game 1 of the last 22 NBA Finals.
? Last 22 years, under is 14-7-1 in Game 1 of the Finals.
? Raptors are 8-2 SU, 7-3 ATS at home in this year?s playoffs.
? Warriors are 6-2 SU, 4-4 ATS on the road in the playoffs.

Golden State is -$285 to win the series.

5) Since 2000, most games a major league team has won without making the playoffs is 93:
? 2002 Mariners
? 2002 Red Sox
? 2003 Mariners

? 2005 Indians

4) One thing you hear baseball people say a lot: You have to have good up-the-middle defense. Apparently, baseball people in Detroit don?t say that a lot.

Detroit Tigers are playing JaCoby Jones in CF; he?s not good. He went 6-13 this weekend to get his batting average over .200. He looks very shaky in the outfield; not really sure what Detroit sees in him.

Niko Goodrum started all three games of the Tigers? series at Citi Field this weekend, but he started at three different positions. Detroit has sketchy defense in part because they jerk around their players around so much, and in part because their players just aren?t very good.

3) Baseball stuff:
? Pirates put D Francisco Cervelli on the 7-day concussion IL.
? Padres scratched Chris Paddack from his start Sunday (stiff neck)
? Astros? 2B Aledmys Diaz (hamstring) left Sunday?s game early.
? Tampa Bay moved P Tyler Glasnow to the 60-day IL.
? Orioles put 1B Chris Davis (hip) on the IL.

2) Get well soon to Cleveland Cavaliers? owner Dan Gilbert, who was hospitalized Sunday after experiencing stroke-like symptoms.

1) RIP Bart Starr, 85, who passed away this weekend; Starr led the Packers to five NFL titles, including wins in the first two Super Bowls.

Starr played college ball at Alabama; he was drafted by Green Bay in the 17th round of the 1956 draft. He also coached the Packers from 1975-83.

Ballpark Figures - Week 10
Joe Williams

Rock Solid

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies will kick off a new series on Memorial Day afternoon on the corner of 30th and Blake Streets in LoDo in the Mile High City. If anyone will be at the game in person, and stop off for some liquid refreshments after the game, have one for me at the 14th Street Rooftop Bar. I'd kill for one of those homemade burritos sold out of a cooler on the street, too!

The Diamondbacks have been sky high lately, too, at least when Greinke is on the bump. They're 7-3 over his past 10 starts while also going 7-3 in his past 10 outings on a grass surface. In addition, he is 31-12 in the past 43 starts against a team with a losing overall record, including 5-2 over his past seven road outings against a losing squad. While the Diamondbacks are 8-2 in their past 10 games in a new series, they're just 2-5 across Greinke's past seven assignments in the opener of a new series. Arizona is also 3-8 across the past 11 games on a Monday, for whatever that's worth. Arizona is also 2-6 in the previous eight meetings between these NL West rivals.

As far as the Rockies are concerned, they will counter with RHP Jon Gray, and they're 5-2 across his past seven outings, including 5-2 in his past seven on a grass surface, too. The Rockies are also 13-6 over his past 19 outings against a team with a winning record, although just 1-4 in the past five starts against a National League West opponent and 1-5 in his past six starts in the opening game of a new series. Colorado will look for continued success against righties, as they're 20-9 in the past 29 at home vs. RHP, while going 4-0 in the past four against a starter with a WHIP under 1.15.

As far as the total is concerned, the over is 8-2 in Greinke's past 10 in Game 1 of a new series, although the under is 5-2 over his past seven outings. The over is 6-1 in his past seven starts inside the division, too, while going 5-1 in Arizona's past six on the road against a team with a losing record. For the Rockies, the over is 10-1 in the past 11 games at home, including 5-0 in the past five at home vs. RHP and 12-4 in the past 16 games overall against winning teams. In this series, the over is 4-0 in the past four meetings in Denver, and 5-2 in the past seven overall.

Looking Ahead

Monday, May 27

The Dodgers and Mets will square off on the left coast at 8:10 p.m. ET, and it's a tremendous pitching matchup with RHP Jacob deGrom and LHP Clayton Kershaw doing battle. The Mets are just 2-6 over the past eight outings by deGrom, and 4-9 in his past 13 road outings against a team with a winning record, and 1-4 in the past five starts against NL West clubs, too. They're also 0-4 in the past four starts by deGrom during Game 1 of a new series. In addition, New York has struggled by going 0-4 in the past four road games vs. LHP and 2-5 in the past seven road contests against a team with a home winning percentage over .600.

As far as the Dodgers are concerned, they're 20-7 in their past 27 games overall, and they kick off a new series after playing in Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon. They welcome a return home, where they're 37-14 in the past 51 games. They also took care of a right-handed starter on Sunday, moving to 38-15 across the past 53 vs. RHP. Kershaw definitely doesn't have a case of the Mondays, either, as the Dodgers are 23-7 over his past 30 assignments on Monday. They're also 46-16 in the past 62 starts when he is working on five days of rest. He is even better against the Mets, as L.A. is 13-2 over his past 15 starts against the Mets, including 5-2 in the past seven starts at home. The Mets are 3-14 in the past 17 meetings with the Dodgers, including 2-6 in their past eight trips to Chavez Ravine.

In the final game of the night, the Rangers roll out RHP Lance Lynn to face Mariners LHP Tommy Milone at T-Mobile Park (formerly Safeco Field). Perhaps the only thing that can cool off Texas is a game on a Monday, as they're 8-17 in the past 25 on Mondays. They're also 8-24 in the past 32 on the road against a left-handed starting pitcher, and 3-8 in the past 11 in Game 1 of a new road series. However, they're 4-1 in Lynn's past five starts. The M's are just 5-13 in the past 18 at home, while going 0-5 in the past five against AL West foes, and 0-4 in the past four vs. RHP. They're also just 6-21 in the past 27 at home against teams with a winning record. In this series, the Rangers have won five straight, although they're just 2-5 in the past seven in Seattle. The over is 3-0-1 in the past four meetings in Seattle, too.

Weather Report
Mother Nature will cooperate in most of the baseball action on the holiday, although the forecast is rather ominous for the interleague battle between the Milwaukee Brewers and Minnesota Twins at Target Field. The forecast calls for a 60 percent chance of rain at first pitch (6:10 p.m. CDT), although the rains pull out by 9 p.m. CDT, so they could potentially get this one in. When they do get it underway the winds will be gusting from 13-16 mph from left-center field into the face of the batters, keeping scores down. Really, that's the only trouble spot, though.

Tuesday, May 28

The Padres and Yankees continue their series in the Bronx, and San Diego rolls out a second consecutive lefty after LHP Matt Strahm took the ball on Monday. Lauer has posted a 3-4 record, 4.72 ERA and .311 on-base percentage against over 53 1/3 innings across 10 outings, and he has a dismal 5.74 ERA in 15 2/3 innings over his past three outings. Venue matters for Lauer, too. He has a solid 2.67 ERA in 33 2/3 innings at home, but an awful 8.24 ERA in 19 2/3 innings on the road, while serving up four homers.

The Yankees counter with RHP Masahiro Tanaka, who has a mediocre 3-3 record through 64 1/3 innings this season. Still, that's mostly due to a lack of run support, as he has a sparkling 2.94 ERA and low .279 on-base percentage against. He has been even better at home, going 2-1 with a 2.52 ERA with just three homers allowed through 35 2/3 innings, while his groundball to fly ball ratio at Yankee Stadium is a solid 2.31. Over his past three outings he has been super, going 1-0 with a 0.95 ERA and 0.74 WHIP, getting opposing batters to pound the ball into the ground at a 4.17 GB:FB rate.

The Royals and White Sox square off on the south side of Chicago, as RHP Brad Keller and RHP Lucas Giolito battle in what could be a very entertaining and underrated pitching matchup. Keller has a poor 3-5 record, but a decent 4.43 ERA and he is coming off a quality start and win in St. Louis against a good Cards team, allowing just two earned run and two hits in a 105-pitch seven-inning quality start. He also allowed two earned runs, four hits and four walks in five innings in a no-decision in his first showing against the White Sox in Chicago back on April 17.

As far as Giolito is concerned, he is an ace in the making. The former Washington Nationals prospect is 6-1 with a 2.77 ERA with 59 strikeouts over just 52 innings, and the White Sox are 5-0 across his pas five outings. The last time his team lost was in a no-decision against the Royals on April 17, a start he was forced from after just 2 2/3 scoreless innings due to injury. Eventually, the Royals won that game in the 10th inning, well after Giolito checked out. The 'under' has connected finr each of his past four outings, including that April 17 start.

The Mets and Dodgers continue their series, and it's a battle of lefties with LHP Steven Matz and LHP Rich Hill locking horns. Matz had a strange line last time out, allowing a run while scattering 10 hits over six innings in an 88-pitch quality start and no-decision. Matz is just 3-3 with a 3.63 ERA in nine starts, although the Mets are 6-3 in his nine appearances this season, but just 1-3 in his past four road appearances. The 'under' is also 4-1 across his past five outings. Hill's season was delayed due to injury, but he has been good with a 2.67 ERA in five starts since his debut April 28. While the Dodgers have posted just 2.33 runs of support over his past three outings, they're still 3-2 overall in his five outings this season. He enters with back-to-back quality starts, going 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA, two walks and 17 strikeouts in 12 innings during the span.

Weather Report
The Padres and Yankees might dodge raindrops early on in their battle Tuesday, but the rains are expected to start lightening up by 7:00 p.m. ET, according to the forecast. Perhaps the tarpaulin makes an appearance, but the game should get in with a 10-13 mph breeze blowing from right field to home plate. The weather is a bit more frightful for the Indians-Red Sox game in Boston, with rain chances listed at 50 percent or greater for most of the evening.

It's the opposite at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, gusting 13-16 mph out to left field with hot, clear conditions helping the ball carry.

LEADING OFF: Kershaw vs deGrom, Cubs players collide
May 26, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

PAIR OF ACES

It's a marquee matchup on Memorial Day at Dodger Stadium when NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom (3-5, 3.72 ERA) pitches for the New York Mets against three-time winner Clayton Kershaw (4-0, 3.33).

Kershaw is 5-0 with a 1.59 ERA in six regular-season home starts against the Mets, although deGrom beat him 3-1 in Game 1 of the 2015 NL Division Series and also won the decisive Game 5 in Los Angeles. New York is coming off a 6-1 homestand, while the NL-leading Dodgers have won nine of 11 overall and are 19-6 at home.

CHICAGO CRASH

Cubs slugger Kris Bryant was cleared to travel with the team to Houston after leaving Sunday's game against Cincinnati following an outfield collision with teammate Jason Heyward. Chicago manager Joe Maddon said he was told Bryant was hit in the head/neck area. ''He's doing OK,'' Maddon said. ''We're trying to talk with the docs and find out exactly where we're at.'' The loss of Bryant for any extended period would be a big blow to the Cubs, who lead the NL Central by 1 1/2 games over Milwaukee. The 2016 NL MVP is batting .345 (30 for 87) with nine homers and 21 RBIs in May. Cole Hamels (4-0, 3.38 ERA) pitches the series opener against Astros right-hander Gerrit Cole (4-5, 4.11), who is 9-3 in his career against Chicago and leads the majors with 100 strikeouts this season.

POWER PACKED

It could be a good week for souvenir seekers at Target Field when the MLB-best Twins (36-16) host big league home run leader Christian Yelich and the Milwaukee Brewers. Minnesota tops the majors with 102 homers, including 16 from Eddie Rosario. Yelich has 21 homers this season and 52 over the past calendar year. The Twins have won six straight and 11 of 12 to move 10 games ahead of second-place Cleveland in the AL Central.

BIG GREEN MACHINE

Oakland tries for a 10th consecutive victory when the Athletics face Mike Trout and the visiting Angels. The winning streak is the longest for the A's this season but comes with a caveat - the club's game against Detroit on May 19 was suspended (with Oakland winning) due to bad weather and won't resume until Sept. 6. The A's have won six in a row since.

ROAD SHOW

Cavan Biggio begins his first big league road trip as the Blue Jays open a series at Tampa Bay. Biggio got his first career hit and homer Sunday in his second game, with Hall of Fame father Craig and 10 other friends and family members in the stands. ''I've always wanted to do what my dad did, ever since a young age, and finally here we've kind of switched roles,'' Cavan Biggio said. ''He's in the seats now and I'm on the field. So that's pretty cool because it's everything I ever wanted.'' Biggio's big crowd was waiting for him as he left the clubhouse afterward, admiring a pair of souvenir balls from the game.

NEW PITCH

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington wants MLB to consider changing its concussion assessment system to allow for player re-entry after exiting a game for testing. Huntington offered the suggestion Sunday, a day after Pittsburgh catcher Francisco Cervelli suffered a head injury but tried to stay in the game for half an inning before leaving for further examination. Huntington says if a player knows he must leave a game to enter concussion testing, he's less likely to report symptoms.

The 33-year-old Cervelli has a long history with head injuries during his 12-year career, with six documented concussions since 2011. He was placed on the seven-day concussion list Sunday.

''The player has to feel pressure as he's standing there with 30,000 or 10,000 or 50,000 eyes on him,'' Huntington said. ''He has to feel pressure to make a decision whether (he's) in or (he's) out of this game. He knows if he takes himself out and he's the catcher, there's only one other catcher, and the game becomes a fiasco if that other catcher gets hurt.''

Orioles have no answer for Torres, Yankees
May 27, 2019
By The Associated Press

Gary Thorne could probably use a break from the New York Yankees.

Thorne, announcing for Baltimore fans on MASN, provided one of the week's more amusing moments with his incredulous reaction to yet another home run by New York's Gleyber Torres against the Orioles. Torres has hit 13 home runs this season, and 10 of them have been against Baltimore.

When Torres went deep in the third inning Wednesday night, Thorne's reaction felt appropriate.

''That's to left-center field. Wilkerson back - I, I don't know,'' he said with a mixture of resignation and bewilderment.

''He is just unstoppable,'' Thorne added. ''And it's all home runs against the Orioles.''

Torres homered again later in the game.

The Yankees have fought through all sorts of injury problems to lead the AL East. Torres and Gary Sanchez have combined for 28 home runs, 19 against Baltimore. New York homered 13 times in its four-game sweep of the Orioles. The Yankees are 10-2 against Baltimore on the season, with 35 home runs so far.

There are still seven games left between the two divisional foes, but the rest of them aren't until August.

The Orioles lost 115 games last year, and this season has been similar so far. They're 16-37 and have already allowed 114 homers in 53 games. After the series against the Yankees, Baltimore had to go to Coors Field, where the Orioles allowed seven homers in three games against Colorado.

New York has been without Giancarlo Stanton for almost the whole season because of biceps issues, and Aaron Judge has hit just five home runs in the 20 games he's played. Judge is sidelined by a left oblique injury.

The Yankees are still getting power from Sanchez, Torres, Clint Frazier and Luke Voit. They lead Tampa Bay by two games atop the division.

BIG LEAD

Although it might feel that way to the Orioles, the Yankees aren't even close to leading the major leagues in home runs. That honor belongs to the Minnesota Twins at the moment. The Twins have hit 104, with Eddie Rosario (16), C.J. Cron (13), Max Kepler (12) and Jonathan Schoop (10) all in double figures. Cleveland has won the AL Central by a combined 38 games over the past three seasons, but the Indians are in real trouble at the moment, languishing around the .500 mark and trailing the Twins by 10 games.

Minnesota has baseball's best record, top run differential and biggest division lead. A win over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday was the Twins' sixth in a row.

HIGHLIGHT

The White Sox turned a triple play on Houston's Jake Marisnick on Wednesday night. With men on first and second, Marisnick hit a grounder to third baseman Yoan Moncada, who was right at the bag when he fielded the ball. He stepped on the base to start the 5-4-3 triple play.

LINE OF THE WEEK

Wil Myers homered twice and walked three times in San Diego's 19-4 victory over Toronto on Saturday. The Padres hit a franchise-record seven home runs.

San Diego is 28-25, a respectable showing after the arrival of free agent Manny Machado. The Padres have been without star rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. this month because of a hamstring injury. His absence prevented the San Diego-Toronto series from matching Tatis against Blue Jays rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

BOSTON (AP) Sandy Leon hit a three-run homer off Oliver Perez after the Indians reliever caused an odd stoppage asking for new footwear, J.D. Martinez homered twice and the Boston Red Sox beat Cleveland 12-5 Monday.

Jackie Bradley Jr. added two RBI doubles, and Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts each had two hits and scored twice for the Red Sox, who have won 18 of 26.

Boston held a moment of silence and showed highlights of former player Bill Buckner, who died Monday. He was 69.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia revealed before the game that he will take an indefinite leave in his long struggle to recover from knee trouble, putting in doubt whether he'll play again in the majors.

The Indians have lost seven of eight, and even the team's equipment is having a rough go of it.

Perez put Fenway Park into a strange delay when he relieved during Boston's six-run fifth inning. The 37-year-old left-hander noticed something amiss with his spikes while warming up and signaled for a replacement pair, leaving him milling about the mound in his socks while a trainer fetched fresh Nike's from the clubhouse.

Boston socked it to him after that. Bradley hit one of his run-scoring doubles to make it 6-3, and Leon followed with his drive into the Green Monster seats.

Rafael Devers and Bogaerts had RBI doubles earlier in the inning against starter Jefry Rodriguez (1-5).

ATHLETICS 8, ANGELS 5

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Jurickson Profar and Josh Phegley homered off former Oakland starter Trevor Cahill and the Athletics rolled to their 10th straight win.

Profar tied it with a two-run homer in the fourth against Cahill (2-5), and Phegley gave the A's the lead for good with a leadoff shot in the fifth. Stephen Piscotty added a two-run single that inning to help Oakland to its first 10-game winning streak since 2006, with a caveat.

Matt Chapman tacked on a solo shot in the seventh to give him home runs in three straight games. Robbie Grossman had two doubles and an RBI in support of Chris Bassitt (3-1), who allowed five runs and six hits in five-plus innings.

The A's then got four scoreless innings from five relievers. Blake Treinen pitched the ninth for his 11th save in 13 chances.

Albert Pujols hit his 642nd career homer, and Kole Calhoun and David Fletcher each had RBI doubles for the Angels, who have lost six of eight games.

MARLINS 3, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Jose Urena pitched seven solid innings, Washington's bullpen blew another lead behind ace Max Scherzer and Miami beat the Nationals to avoid a four-game sweep.

After Scherzer went six innings and left leading 2-1, Tanner Rainey allowed the tying run in the seventh for the Nationals' 11th blown save, matching the Chicago Cubs for most in the majors. Kyle Barraclough (1-2) then allowed Miguel Rojas' go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth. Defensive miscues by first baseman Matt Adams and shortstop Trea Turner in those innings didn't help, and Washington fell to 2-10 in Scherzer's starts this season.

The Nationals loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning but could not push the tying run across against the relief duo Nick Anderson and Adam Conley. Sergio Romo pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 10th save, dropping Washington to 22-32.

Urena (3-6) allowed two earned runs and four hits to improve to 5-2 against the Nationals, including an earlier win this season.

YANKEES 5, PADRES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Clint Frazier, Brett Gardner and Gary Sanchez homered, Manny Machado was booed and greeted with chants of ''Over-rated!'' in his first visit to New York since free agency and the Yankees beat San Diego for their eighth win in nine games.

Matt Strahm (2-4) struck out a career-high 10 in six innings but wasted a 2-0 lead in the Yankees' three-run second.

Machado was interested in playing for the Bronx Bombers after becoming a free agent last fall and dined with Yankees officials in December, but New York did not pursue him to play third base. Machado signed a $300 million, 10-year contract with the Padres in late February.

Short on starting pitching with Luis Severino, James Paxton and CC Sabathia on the injured list, New York used Chad Green as an opener for the third time, and he struck out the side in the first. David Hale (1-0) allowed two runs and three hits over the next four innings for his first win since 2015.

ASTROS 6, CUBS 5

HOUSTON (AP) - Gerrit Cole tied a season high with 12 strikeouts in six solid innings and Houston reached Cole Hamels early and held on for a win over Chicago.

Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer in the first inning, but Cole (5-5) dominated after that, allowing two singles and striking out 10 over the next five innings.

Playing without injured stars Jose Altuve and George Springer, and Carlos Correa, who got a day off, the Astros cut the deficit to one in the second and scored five times off Hamels (4-1) in the third to take a 6-2 lead.

Jack Mayfield made his major league debut after playing more than 600 games in seven seasons in the minors. He hit a double in his first plate appearance in the second and got his first RBI on a groundout in Houston's big third.

ROCKIES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3, 11 INNINGS

DENVER (AP) - Raimel Tapia singled in the winning run in the 11th inning to give Colorado another dramatic victory.

It was Colorado's third walk-off win in four games. The Rockies won two of three over the weekend against Baltimore in their final at-bat.

Ian Desmond set up Tapia's clutch swing with a double that hit the top of the right-field fence and bounced into play. After a quick review to see if it was a homer, Desmond remained at second. On the next pitch from Matt Andriese (3-3), Tapia hit a grounder through the middle for his second career game-ending RBI.

Seunghwan Oh (2-1) earned the win with a 1-2-3 11th inning.

RAYS 8, BLUE JAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Yonny Chirinos was pulled after five no-hit innings and Tampa Bay beat Toronto.

Chirinos (6-1) made his 11th appearance and fifth start this season. Oliver Drake relieved to begin the sixth and gave up a leadoff single to Luke Maile. Five Rays relievers completed a four-hitter.

Austin Meadows homered and drove in three runs for the Rays, who remain two games behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees despite going a season-high 13 games over .500.

Aaron Sanchez (4-4) gave up one run and six hits before leaving after the third inning because of a problem with the fingernail on his right middle finger.

PIRATES 8, REDS 5

CINCINNATI (AP) - Bryan Reynolds hit a tiebreaking two-run triple in Pittsburgh's four-run eighth inning, and the Pirates beat Cincinnati in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Reynolds' liner off David Hernandez (1-3) got into the gap in left-center and drove in Cole Tucker and Adam Frazier. Starling Marte followed with a shot to center for his sixth homer, lifting Pittsburgh to an 8-4 lead.

Josh Bell also went deep for the Pirates, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Kyle Crick (2-1) got four outs for the win.

Felipe Vazquez replaced Crick with the bases loaded in the eighth and struck out Nick Senzel, ending the inning. Vazquez then worked the ninth for his 14th save.

ORIOLES 5, TIGERS 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Renato Nunez and Jonathan Villar homered, and Baltimore benefited from several miscues by skidding Detroit.

In a matchup between two struggling teams, the Orioles prevailed because of the long ball and a throwing error by shortstop Ronny Rodriguez that produced two unearned runs. Nunez hit a two-run homer off Daniel Norris (2-3) and Villar added a solo shot against Victor Alcantara in the seventh, sending Baltimore to its third win in 14 games.

After Gabriel Ynoa pitched four innings for Baltimore, Dan Straily (2-4) allowed one run in four innings and Shawn Armstrong got three outs for his first save.

Tweet of the Day
?It would be nice to have another starter that we can run out there. Not to say that [Steven] Brault and Rookie [Davis] ? I heard [Mitch] Keller?s coming up ? can?t do it. But if you look at the staffs around the league and the division we?re in, it?s tough. We have to be running out the best thing we have every night. That?s what we?re trying to do right now.?
Pirates pitcher Joe Musgrove

Tuesday?s quiz
Jacob deGrom is a really good pitcher; what is the Mets? record in his last 40 starts?

Monday?s quiz
Steve Kerr played his college basketball at Arizona.

Sunday?s quiz
Michael Jordan was the 3rd pick in the 1984 NBA Draft; Hakeem Olajuwon was the first pick. Sam Bowie was the second pick.

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) General observation from watching hours and hours of baseball; older umpires call more strikes than younger umps. No data to support this, but just get the feeling from watching so many games than older guys give more corners.

12) It still baffles me why major league baseball blacks out games; do they want the game to get more exposure, so younger people will like it the way we do?

Dodger games are blacked out in Las Vegas, which is three hours from Los Angeles. To paraphrase my high school chemistry teacher, ???this is nonsensical.?

You could have hundreds of people in casinos all over Las Vegas watching baseball, rooting for baseball players, talking/caring about baseball, but they black out the games. Why?!?!?!?!?

11) Baseball is hard; long season, 162 games in 182 days.
? Sunday, Trevor Story was 0-5 with five strikeouts.
? Monday, Javier Baez was 0-5 with five strikeouts.

Both these guys are really good players. Thats why you hear people say that you have to keep an even keel over the course of a long season. There will be bad days.

10) Rays 8, Blue Jays 3? Tampa Bay starter Yonny Chirinos didn?t allow a hit for five innings, but was taken out after throwing 69 pitches, with a 4-0 lead. Interesting decision.

9) Brewers 5, Twins 4? Twins scored first in 36 of their 53 games; they?re 30-6 in the games where they scored first. Minnesota still leads the AL Central by 10.5 games.

8) WHIP is a pitcher?s stat; walks and hits allowed divided by innings pitched- it measures how many baserunners a pitcher allows. Seems strange to me that if a pitcher hits a batter with a pitch, it doesn?t count against his WHIP. Shouldn?t it count the same as a walk?

7) Baseball stuff:
? Colorado put OF Charlie Blackmon (calf) on IL.
? Astros put 2B Aledmys Diaz (hamstring) on IL.
? Arizona put P Luke Weaver (forearm) on IL.

6) David Price will start Tuesday?s game vs Cleveland; he left his last start in Houston after 15 pitches because of flu-like symptoms.

5) World Series of Poker starts this week in Las Vegas; this is the 50th WSOP. Would be nice if they made online poker legal again, so ESPN would show more of the WSOP replays and less of their hideous talkshows that pollute the airways on weekdays.

I enjoyed watching poker re-runs; seeing the hole card cam and watching how people reacted to bad beats. Was unscripted and fun to watch, unless the horrendous talk TV they have on now.

4) College basketball transfer portal:
? TCU poaches George Mason grad transfer Jaire Grayer
? Arkansas poaches SMU grad transfer Jimmy Whitt.

3) A?s 8, Angels 5? Oakland won its 10th game in a row, their longest win streak in 13 years.

2) Monday?s game between the White Sox and Royals was suspended with two outs in the bottom of the 5th inning, tied 1-1. The game will be resumed before tomorrow?s regularly-scheduled game.

1) RIP to Bill Buckner, who passed away at age 69; he hit .289 over a 22-year career that saw him get 2,715 hits. Twice led the league in doubles; won NL batting title in 1980.
