Friday's Diamond Notes
June 21, 2019
By Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Yankees (6-0 last six)

New York didn?t let up following a three-game sweep of Tampa Bay as the Yankees held off the Astros, 10-6. The Yankees stand one game behind the Astros for the best record in the American League at 47-27, while beating Houston for the first time in four tries. The Bronx Bombers went deep four times in Thursday?s victory, including Edwin Encarnacion?s AL-leading 23rd home run and first as a Yankee after getting acquired from the Mariners.

James Paxton takes the mound for New York tonight as the southpaw allowed five runs in four innings of an 8-6 loss at Houston back in mid-April. Paxton shut down the White Sox in his past outing last Sunday by yielding two runs in six innings of a 10-3 blowout. The southpaw is riding a 6-1 run to the OVER the last seven outings, while the Yankees have scored at least six runs in nine of his past 10 starts.

Coldest team: Phillies (2-8 last 10)

The expectations were sky high in Philadelphia following several key offseason acquisitions, including the signing of free agent Bryce Harper to a megadeal. But the Phillies have slumped in June by losing 11 of 17 games, including dropping five of six games on their road trip at Atlanta and Washington. The Nationals pulled off a three-game sweep of the Phillies in D.C., capped off by a 7-4 victory by Washington on Thursday.

The Phillies return to Citizens Bank Park tonight to host the Marlins as ace Aaron Nola heads to the hill. Nola has been up and down of late as the righty gave up five runs in less than five innings in a 6-5 win at Atlanta. The Phillies rallied for two runs in the ninth inning (the only win on the recent road trip), as Philadelphia looks to improve to 4-1 in Nola?s last five home starts.

Hottest pitcher: Walker Buehler, Dodgers (7-1, 3.06 ERA)

Buehler was slated to pitch on Thursday against San Francisco but was pushed back to tonight as Los Angeles hosts Colorado. The right-hander is fresh off a pair of consecutive scoreless outings against the Giants and Cubs, but picked up a no-decision in a 2-1 defeat to Chicago his last time out. Buehler has delivered quality starts in seven of his last eight appearances, while shutting down the Rockies in a 7-2 victory at Coors Field back in early April.

Coldest pitcher: Joe Musgrove, Pirates (4-7, 4.87 ERA)

The Pittsburgh right-hander began the season on fire by posting five straight quality starts, but things have gone downhill since. The Pirates are 3-7 in Musgrove?s last 10 starts, which doesn?t include an outing at Atlanta in which he was ejected after hitting Braves? third baseman Josh Donaldson in the first inning. Musgrove came out three days later to start again at SunTrust Park, but the former Astros? hurler allowed six runs in four innings of a 6-5 defeat. Musgrove faces the Padres at PNC Park tonight as he beat San Diego last month, 6-4 as a short underdog in spite of giving up four runs.

Biggest OVER run: Blue Jays (7-1-1 last nine)

Toronto avoided a four-game sweep against Los Angeles by knocking off the Angels in 10 innings on Thursday, 7-5. The Blue Jays? offense has woken up recently by scoring five runs or more in four of the last five games, while posting 12 runs twice in the past eight contests. Toronto travels to Boston as the Blue Jays and Red Sox have hit the OVER in five of six matchups, while the winning team has plated at least six runs in every victory. Trent Thornton has not faced the Red Sox this season, but the Jays are 4-1 in his last five starts in the role of a road underdog, while tossing 6.2 scoreless innings in a 12-0 shutout of the Astros last Sunday.

Biggest UNDER run: Reds (15-1 last 16)

Cincinnati?s pitching continues to excel as the Reds shut down the powerful Brewers? lineup in Thursday?s 7-1 rout at Miller Park. The Reds not only picked up their fifth consecutive win (the last four against defending division champions), but Cincinnati has allowed three runs or less during each game in this hot streak. Cincinnati is riding an eight-game UNDER streak away from Great American Ballpark as Sonny Gray tries to keep this stretch going. The Reds have won five of Gray?s last six outings, including tossing six scoreless innings in a 3-0 victory at Milwaukee last month.

Matchup to watch: Braves vs. Nationals

Washington has come back to life recently by winning 17 of its last 24 games, including pulling off a three-game sweep of the reeling Phillies at home. The Nationals are within two games of the .500 mark as they welcome in the NL East-leading Braves. Atlanta is also on fire recently by posting an 11-2 record the last 13 games, which includes series victories over the Marlins, Pirates, Phillies, and Mets.

Tonight is the much-anticipated Braves? debut of former Astros? ace Dallas Keuchel. The 2015 AL Cy Young winner sat out the first two months of the season as a free agent before settling on Atlanta as the southpaw finished 2018 owning a 12-11 record and 3.74 ERA in Houston. Keuchel made two starts in the minors as he allowed 11 hits and three runs in seven innings of his most recent outing at Double-A Mississippi.

Stephen Strasburg hasn?t pitched well at home recently by getting tagged for 11 runs in his last two appearances at Nationals Park against the White Sox and Diamondbacks. Although Washington rallied past Chicago on June 4 in a 9-5 triumph, the Nationals fell short against Arizona last Saturday in a 10-3 setback as a -215 favorite. Strasburg defeated the Braves at SunTrust Park in late May, 5-4 by striking out 11 batters in seven innings of work.

Betcha didn?t know:
The road team has dominated the Giants/Diamondbacks series this season by going 5-1. Arizona swept San Francisco at Oracle Park last month, as the two teams hook up in Phoenix this weekend. The D-backs were just swept by the Rockies at home as Arizona has lost five of its past six games. The Giants are riding a 5-0 run in the last five series openers, including underdog road victories against the Mets and Dodgers.

LEADING OFF: Pujols in St Louis, Judge back, Keuchel debut
June 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

BACK WHERE IT BEGAN

Albert Pujols returns for his first game in St. Louis since leaving the Cardinals to sign a $240 million contract with the Angels before the 2012 season. The slugger won three NL MVP awards and made nine All-Star teams with the Cardinals, leading them to World Series championships in 2006 and 2011. Pujols, sixth on the career list with 645 home runs, batted .328 with 455 doubles, 445 homers and 1,329 RBIs in 1,705 games for St. Louis. He is scheduled to meet the media at Busch Stadium before the opener of an interleague series.

JUDGE-MENT DAY

Aaron Judge is all set to swing back into action for the first-place New York Yankees. The slugger is expected to be reinstated from the injured list to play against Houston, his first game since straining his left oblique April 20. ''I'm not going to try to baby it or go at 80%. We're in the major leagues,'' Judge said Thursday at Yankee Stadium. ''We're ready to go. That's not something I'm worried about happening again.'' Judge wrapped up a five-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, going 2 for 16 with a homer.

BRAVE NEW WORLD

Dallas Keuchel makes his season debut in his initial start for first-place Atlanta at Washington. After a long wait in free agency, the 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner signed a one-year deal this month that pays him $13 million. The two-time All-Star went 12-11 with a 3.74 ERA in 34 starts last season for Houston. Stephen Strasburg (7-4, 3.75 ERA) takes the ball for the Nationals, who are coming off a three-game sweep of Philadelphia in a rain-shortened series. They've used a 17-7 surge to get within two games of .500 (36-38) for the first time since April 28.

NORTHERN EXPOSURE?

Starved for fans despite success on the field, the Tampa Bay Rays have been given the go-ahead by Major League Baseball to look into playing a split season in Montreal. No timetable for the possible plan was announced. An idea under consideration is for the Rays to play early in the season in Tampa Bay and finish up in Montreal, home of the Expos from 1969-2004 before they moved to Washington and became the Nationals.

''My priority remains the same, I am committed to keeping baseball in Tampa Bay for generations to come,'' Rays principal owner Stu Sternberg said in a statement. ''I believe this concept is worthy of serious exploration.''

Forget it, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman said. Tropicana Field is located in his city.

''I want to be crystal clear. The Rays cannot explore playing any Major League Baseball games in Montreal, or anywhere else for that matter, prior to 2028 without reaching a formal memorandum of understanding with the city of St. Petersburg,'' he said. ''And ultimately such a decision is up to me, and I have no intention of bringing this idea to our city council to consider. In fact, I believe this is getting a bit silly.''

ENCORE! ENCORE!

Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer (5-6) ended the longest winless drought of his career with his first major league shutout Sunday in Detroit. Now he gets to face the Tigers again. After a 5-2 road trip, Cleveland is home for the opener of a weekend series. Bauer is back on the mound five days after his four-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks against the Tigers. He was 0-5 over his previous eight outings before Cleveland won 8-0 in his 166th career start since his big league debut in 2012.

Yanks win 7th straight, top sliding Astros
June 21, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres each homered for the third game in a row, providing a pair of two-run shots that sent the New York Yankees past the skidding Houston Astros 4-1 on Friday night for their seventh straight victory.

Aaron Judge was hitless in his return to the lineup - batting leadoff - but James Paxton (5-3) won consecutive starts for the first time with the Yankees, who matched their longest winning streak of the year.

Houston wasted a strong start from Brad Peacock (6-5) and has dropped six in a row for the first time since July 2015.

Paxton went five-plus innings before handing a slim lead to a shutdown bullpen that delivered again for the AL East leaders.

Aroldis Chapman got three outs for his 21st save in 23 attempts. He was checked by a trainer after slipping to the turf while fielding Jose Altuve's bunt single with two outs in the ninth. Then he threw a called third strike past rookie bopper Yordan Alvarez with two aboard to end it.

Houston went 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 in all.

The Astros scored on successive doubles by Tyler White and Jake Marisnick with two outs in the fourth.

CARDINALS 5, ANGELS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Albert Pujols drew huge cheers in his long-awaited return to St Louis, but Marcell Ozuna spoiled the homecoming with a home run that helped the Cardinals beat Los Angeles.

Pujols spent the first 11 years of his All-Star career with the Cardinals, helped them win the 2011 World Series and then signed with Angels as a free agent. Due to inconsistent interleague scheduling, this was the first time the Angels have visited St. Louis since Pujols left. He went 1 for 2 with a walk.

Ozuna's solo homer in the sixth broke a 1-1 tie. Ozuna also had RBI singles in the fourth and seventh.

Michael Wacha (5-3) went six innings, struck out four, walked one and retired the final eight batters he faced.

Griffin Canning (2-4) sent down the first nine batters he faced before running into control issues in the fourth.

DODGERS 4, ROCKIES 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Walker Buehler struck out a career-high 16 in his first complete game and Los Angeles rallied on Matt Beaty's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

With two outs, Max Muncy walked and Beaty followed with a shot to center field off Jairo Diaz (1-2).

Buehler's nine innings were a career high. He gave up two homers, and the only other hit he allowed was a single to Charlie Blackmon in the ninth.

The NL West-leading Dodgers have won nine in a row against second-place Rockies.

German Marquez gave up two runs - one earned - and five hits in eight innings. The right-hander struck out eight with no walks.

Blackmon and Nolan Arendado homered for the Rockies.

MARLINS 2, PHILLIES

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Sandy Alcantara pitched 7 2/3 sharp innings, Bryan Holaday hit a solo homer and Miami dealt Philadelphia its fifth straight loss.

Alcantara (4-6) gave up one run, eight hits and struck out six. Sergio Romo earned his 14th save in 15 tries.

Phillies ace Aaron Nola (6-2) allowed two runs - one earned - and six hits, striking out 10 in eight innings.

The Marlins went ahead in the sixth after Brian Anderson got hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to third on Starlin Castro's single. Anderson scored when third baseman Scott Kingery bobbled Cesar Puello's slow roller for an error.

The Phillies tied it a 1 in the third when Roman Quinn stole home.

NATIONALS 4, BRAVES 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Dallas Keuchel labored through five innings in his Atlanta debut, coughing up a three-run lead in a loss to Washington.

Keuchel (0-1) made his first first major league appearance since starting Game 3 of last year's AL Championship Series for the Houston Astros. He never retired Washington in order and gave up four runs, three earned, on eight hits. He hit two batters.

The Braves had won 11 of 13. The third-place Nationals have won five straight and nine of 12.

Atlanta led 3-0 in the fourth thanks to a two-run homer by Austin Riley and an RBI double by Freddie Freeman.

In the bottom half, Victor Robles lined an RBI triple and scored on Michael A. Taylor's squeeze bunt. Yan Gomes homered to tie it at 3-3.

Washington pushed ahead in the fifth, when Juan Soto led off with a triple and Anthony Rendon singled him home.

Stephen Strasburg (8-4) allowed three runs in six innings. Wander Suero allowed the first two runners to reach in the ninth before retiring the side for his first career save.

PIRATES 2, PADRES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Joe Musgrove pitched five-hit, one-run ball through seven innings, and Pittsburgh capitalized on two errors by Manny Machado in a win over San Diego.

Musgrove (5-7) struck out eight. Felipe Vazquez gave up one hit in the ninth and picked up his 18th save.

Machado, playing his 1,000th major league game, fumbled a ground ball from Jung Ho Kang at third base in the seventh inning before tossing it past first base. Jose Osuna drove in Steven Brault, who was pinch-running for Kang, to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

Pittsburgh reliever Kyle Crick walked the bases loaded in the eighth before getting Franmil Reyes to pop to first to end the inning.

The Pirates won for the third time in four games after losing 19 of their previous 26. The Padres had their four-game winning streak halted.

The loss spoiled an efficient outing by Padres starter Eric Lauer (5-7), who allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits in seven innings with 80 pitches (58 strikes).

METS 5, CUBS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Jeff McNeil homered and drove in three runs in his first career start in right field as New York beat Chicago.

Michael Conforto also connected and the slumping Mets won for just the fourth time in 11 games. Brooks Pounders (1-0) got four outs for his first victory since he was acquired in a deal with Cleveland last week.

Addison Russell hit a two-run homer for Chicago, which dropped to 2-2 on a 10-game homestand. Brad Brach (3-2) got the loss after surrendering Hechavarria's leadoff single in the seventh.

The Cubs had one last chance in the ninth, but Edwin Diaz worked a perfect inning for his 16th save.

Yu Darvish allowed four runs and four hits in six innings in his 10th consecutive no-decision, extending a franchise record. He became the first traditional starting pitcher with 10 straight no-decisions since Philadelphia's Randy Lerch in 1977.

INDIANS 7, TIGERS 6

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis hit a tiebreaking triple in the eighth inning, right fielder Tyler Naquin made a game-saving play in the ninth, and Cleveland beat Detroit.

Kipnis' triple - which was initially ruled a home run, a call that was overturned after a replay review - and Jake Bauers' sacrifice fly put Cleveland ahead 7-5.

Closer Brad Hand, the Indians' fifth reliever, earned his 21st save in 21 opportunities. Adam Cimber (3-2) retired two batters on six pitches in the eighth.

Carlos Santana, Naquin and and Jordan Luplow homered for the Indians.

Joe Jimenez (2-5) took the loss. Detroit starter Matthew Boyd allowed five runs in six innings.

RED SOX 7, BLUE JAYS 5, 10 INNINGS

BOSTON (AP) - Christian Vazquez hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning to cap Boston's comeback from four runs down.

Boston trailed 5-1 before scoring three runs in the seventh on Andrew Benintendi's RBI single and J.D. Martinez's two-run single, and tying it in the eighth on pinch-hitter Rafael Devers' run-scoring single.

Jordan Romano (0-1) got two quick outs in the 10th before hitting Marco Hernandez with a pitch. Vazquez then drove a 3-2 pitch out to right for his ninth homer of the season to give the Red Sox their eighth win in nine games.

Brandon Workman (6-1) pitched a scoreless 10th for Boston.

Randal Grichuk homered for Toronto, which got six strong innings from rookie Trent Thornton.

Thornton pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and eight hits, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

WHITE SOX 5, RANGERS 4, 10 INNINGS

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Eloy Jimenez scored on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by Yolmer Sanchez in the 10th inning and Chicago beat Texas in a game that included two impressive home runs.

Zack Collins got his first big league start for the White Sox and went deep in the second inning. His three-run homer to center was measured at 447 feet by MLB's StatCast.

That was after Rangers right fielder Nomar Mazara pulled a two-run shot into the second deck of seats in right field in the first that MLB's system said would have gone 505 feet unimpeded. That matched the longest ever recorded by StatCast, which is in only its fifth season of use.

In the end, small ball won against Shawn Kelley (3-2). Rougned Odor also homered for the Rangers.

Kelvin Herrera (3-3) struck out the only batter he faced. Alex Colome worked the 10th for his 16th save.

TWINS 8, ROYALS 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Max Kepler's single drove in the tiebreaking run and Eddie Rosario added a run-scoring hit to cap Minnesota's three-run rally in the eighth.

Minnesota scored five runs in the last three innings to avoid its first three-game losing streak of the season.

Ryne Harper (3-0) pitched one-plus inning to pick up the win despite allowing Jorge Soler's 21st leadoff home run in the eighth that pulled the Royals back within one. Taylor Rogers got the last six outs for his ninth save in 11 chances.

Cheslor Cuthbert had three hits and four RBIs - tying career highs in both - for the Royals, who have lost a major league-high 26 games in which they've held a lead. Kansas City has been outscored 177-125 after the sixth inning this season.

Royals starter Jakob Junis allowed three runs and six hits in six innings.

Martin Perez gave up six runs - four earned - in five innings for the Twins.

REDS 11, BREWERS 7

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jose Iglesias had four hits and drove in two runs and the Cincinnati extended its winning streak to a season-high six games.

Milwaukee's Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer in the fifth, his third in three games, and extended his hitting streak to a career-high 18 games. He has 29 homers this season, tying him with Prince Fielder in 2007 for the most in franchise history before the All-Star break.

Cincinnati scored three runs in the first with just one hit and led 6-1 before Yelich and Mike Moustakas homered off starter Sonny Gray in the fifth. The Brewers lost their fifth straight.

David Hernandez (2-3) got the victory with 1 2/3 innings of one-hit relief.

Chase Anderson (3-2) allowed six runs on six hits in five innings for Milwaukee.

GIANTS 11, DIAMONDBACKS 5

PHOENIX (AP) - Alex Dickerson had a grand slam and six RBIs in his San Francisco debut, Kevin Pillar had four RBIs and the Giants rolled over Arizona.

Dickerson, who was traded from San Diego on June 10, was called up from Triple-A Sacramento after Steven Duggar went on the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain. He made the most of the call-up, crushing his second career grand slam 458 feet to center off Taylor Clarke (1-3) to put the Giants up 6-0 in the third inning.

Dickerson added a two-run triple in the seventh, finishing a double shy of the cycle.

Pillar hit a two-run homer off Clarke in the second inning and had a two-run single in the seventh after Arizona rallied with five runs against Jeff Samardzija (4-6).

Arizona's Nick Ahmed hit a two-run home. The Diamondbacks loaded the bases in the ninth inning, but Will Smith struck out the final two hitters.

Saturday?s Den: Looking at some Pac-12 football trends??.

Arizona? Wildcats are 22-28 SU last four years; since ?13, they?re 5-16 ATS as road underdogs. Average total in their last five bowls (3-2) is 76.2. Senior QB Tate has 20 career starts; they don?t play Washington State this year- they lost 69-28 to the Coogs LY.

Arizona State?
Sun Devils lost four of last five bowls, giving up 38.8 ppg; they?re 10-4-1 in last 15 games as an underdog. Last two years, ASU is 7-2-1 vs spread coming off a loss; they?ll have a new QB this year, playing behind an experienced OL.

California? Golden Bears made only 2nd bowl since 2011 LY; they?ve got only 4 starters back on offense this year. Cal lost to arch-rival Stanford last five years, by average score of 32-19 (1-4 vs spread). Under Wilcox, Cal is 11-5 ATS as an underdog, 2-5-1 as a favorite.

Colorado? Last year?s 5-0 start turned into an injury-riddled 5-7 debacle that cost MacIntyre his job. Buffs have been to one bowl since 2007; their last bowl win was 33-28 over UTEP in the 2004 Houston Bowl. Mel Tucker is a long-time DC; this is his first head coaching job.

Oregon? This is first time since 2016 that Ducks have same HC two years in row; they lost three of last four bowls, winning LY?s bowl 7-6 over Michigan State. Last three years, under three HCs, Oregon is 1-7-1 ATS as a road underdog.

Oregon State? Last four years, Beavers are 9-39 SU, 6-11 ATS as a home underdog, 9-13-1 as a road dog- their last bowl was in 2013, when Mike Riley was HC. In their last 25 games, OSU is -24 in turnovers; they?re very experienced this year, should show improvement.

USC? Trojans were 5-7 LY; they?re 3-9 vs spread in last 12 games as a home favorite. USC is 3-2 in its last five bowls, scoring 45-45-52 in the wins, 21-7 in losses. Since 2012, Trojans are 3-12 as a road underdog.

Stanford? Won 8+ games every year for last decade; their last three bowls (2-1) were decided by total of five points. Cardinal is 8-3 in last 11 games as a road favorite; over last decade, they?re 5-0 ATS as a home underdog.

UCLA? Bruins are 13-24 SU the last three years; since 2014, they?re 8-15 as a home favorite. Over last decade, they?re 39-53 ATS (42.4%) in Pac-12 games. In their last three bowls, UCLA allayed 35-37-35 points, losing two of three.

Utah? Last two years, Utes are 8-2 vs spread as home favorites; since 2014, they?re 11-2 as a road underdog. Whittingham is 11-2 SU in his career in bowl games. Senior QB Huntley has 19 career starts.

Washington? Huskies are 32-9 SU last three years, but went 0-3 in bowls; they?ll have a new QB this year (Georgia transfer Eason- 13 starts for Dawgs). Washington has + turnover ratio the last seven years, going +51 the last five years.

Washington State? From 2009-14, Coogs were 19-54; from 2015-18, they?re 37-15; Mike Leach is a damn good coach. Since 2013, WSU is 16-5 ATS as a road underdog. This year?s QB is Gage Gubrud, a grad transfer from I-AA Eastern Washington.

LEADING OFF: Yankees win 7 straight, Astros drop 6 in row
June 21, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

UP AND DOWN

Gary Sanchez, Gleyber Torres and the Yankees have won seven in row with a lineup that added Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Edwin Encarnacion in the last week. New York also has homered in 24 straight games, one shy of the franchise record set in 1941.

Still missing injured George Springer and Carlos Correa, the Astros have dropped six in a row for the first time since July 2015.

In a matchup of division leaders at Yankee Stadium, lefty Wade Miley (6-4, 3.30 ERA) starts for Houston against Masahiro Tanaka (5-5, 3.23), coming off a two-hit shutout over Tampa Bay. Tanaka is 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA in six starts versus Houston.

ROOKED

Padres rookie Chris Paddack was creating all sorts of buzz into late May with a sub-2.00 ERA, a bunch of strikeouts and a lot of confidence. Since then, it's been a different story.

The 23-year-old righty hasn't made it past five innings in any of his last three starts, getting tagged by the Yankees, Phillies and Giants. He has allowed 12 earned runs over 14 1/3 innings in that span.

Paddack (4-4, 3.15) will try to get back on track when he pitches at Pittsburgh against Chris Archer (3-6, 5.85).

NOT PHILLING SO GOOD

The move to put Bryce Harper in the leadoff spot hasn't sparked the Phillies, who have lost five in a row.

Harper went 1 for 5 on Friday night in a 2-1 loss at home to the Marlins. Philadelphia is 6-14 since May 29 and has lost eight games in the standings in that span after holding a 3+-game lead in the NL East.

NEWCOMER

The Indians will promote Aaron Civale from the minors to make his major league debut and face Detroit. The 24-year-old righty is a combined 5-0 over seven starts this season at Triple-A and Double-A. He'll pitch at Progessive Field in place of Mike Clevinger, who went on the injured list with a sprained left ankle.

Saturday, June 22

The Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies battle at Citizens Bank Park in Saturday matinee action at 4:05 p.m. ET. These teams will face a stiff wind from 10-13 mph blowing in from left field to first base, knocking the ball down off the bats of right-handed power hitters.

RHP Elieser Hernandez takes the ball for the Fish, and while he is 0-2 through 13 2/3 innings, he has a respectable 3.95 ERA with 13 strikeouts and just two walks with a .293 opponent on-base percentage. That includes a quality start last time out in St. Louis when he allowed just two runs - one earned - and five hits in a 101-pitch outing over six innings in a no-decision. The Marlins have provided him with just one total run of offensive support over his two starts. Over his two starts he has a 0.71 groundball-to-flyball ratio, so that's something that could get him into trouble at a bandbox like 'The Vault'.

The Phillies counter with RHP Vince Velasquez, who is 2-4 with a 4.71 ERA with 49 strikeouts over 42 innings. He has gotten himself into trouble with walks, issuing 21 free passes with a .353 on-base percentage against. While he is 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA at home this season, he has a 7.30 ERA in 12 1/3 innings with a 0-2 record in day appearances. His start isn't expected to last very long, as he has been operating in relief role until June 16 in Atlanta, just one of seven starts over 17 appearances.

The Marlins are just 14-37 over the past 51 road games vs. RHP, and they're 0-7 in the past seven starts by Hernandez, including 0-6 in his past six against teams with a winning record. For the Phillies, they're in a five-game slide, including 0-5 in the past five divisional games, but they are 6-1 over Velasquez's past seven home outings. They're also 4-0 in Velasquez's past four home outings against Miami, and 5-1 in his past six overall against the Marlins. The under is 5-1 in the past six meetings, and 4-1 in the past five at Citizens Bank Park.

The Astros are skidding, and they will face a tall order against RHP Masahiro Tanaka at Yankee Stadium at 7:15 p.m. ET on FOX. Houston has dropped six in a row, and they're 0-5 in the past five on the road, too. They turn to LHP Wade Miley to change their fortunes, and they're 8-3 over Miley's past 11 starts, including 5-2 over his past seven against winning teams.

The Yankees have managed to win 36 of Tanaka's past 52 stats, and they're 40-17 across the past 57 games. In addition, they're 5-1 in the past six against AL West clubs, and 45-14 in the past 59 at home against teams with a winning overall road mark. Interestingly, the Yankees are just 2-6 in the past eight outings by Tanaka against the 'Stros.

If you're playing the total, the under is 4-1 in Houston's past five, and 4-1 in the past five road outings, too. The under is also 5-1 in Miley's past six overall, and 4-0 in his past four against teams with a winning overall mark. Fort he Yankees, the over is 4-0 in the past four home games vs. LHP, and 9-4 in the past 13 overall.

The Rockies turn to RHP Peter Lambert to stay hot. They're 17-8 in the past 25 games overall, and 7-3 in the past 10 against left-handed starting pitchers. They're also 6-2 in the past eight against winning teams, while going 10-3 in the past 13 inside the division.

For the Dodgers, they're red hot at home, going 40-12 in the past 52 games at Chavez Ravine, while going 40-13 in the past 53 inside the division. LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu will take the ball looking to stay hot, too. They're 7-1 across his past eight outings, and 40-16 in his past 56 appearances at home. They're also 4-0 in the past four against teams with a winning record, and a ridiculous 10-1 in the past 11 starts inside the division.

Weather Report
Wind will be the story for the Twins-Royals afternoon battle at Kauffman Stadium. It will be hot, with temps hovering around 100 degrees. The winds will be blowing out from 12-15 mph to left field.

It's the opposite story for the Mets-Cubs battle at Wrigley, with the wind blowing in from right field at 11-14 mph. As mentioned, the wind will also be blowing in for Marlins-Phillies (see above), while the wind blows at 12-15 mph from left to right at Fenway for the Blue Jays-Red Sox afternoon battle.

In evening action, the Astros-Yankees will face 10-13 mph winds blowing left to right across the diamond, while the White Sox-Rangers see a wind howling in from right-center field into the face of the batters at 16-19 mph, likely keeping run totals down.

Sunday, June 23

In Sunday's series finale, the Astros roll out RHP Justin Verlander against Yankees LHP JA Happ. The Astros have won 21 of Verlander's past 26 road outings, and they're 9-4 in his past 13 against teams with a winning overall mark. They're also 37-15 in the past 52 road outings vs. LHP, and 36-17 in the past 53 overall against southpaws. Houston is also 8-1 in the past nine road outings by Verlander against teams with a winning overall mark.

For the Yankees, they're 7-2 in their past nine games on a Sunday. More importantly, they're 69-27 in the past 96 at home against right-handed starting pitchers, and 37-15 in the past 52 overall vs. RHP. They're also 4-0 in Happ's past four starts at home, and 20-7 in his past 27 overall while going a perfect 8-0 in the past eight overall when working on four days of rest. They're also 8-2 in his past 10 against teams with a winning overall mark.

The under is also 11-3 in the past 14 starts by Verlander, and 6-2 in his past eight road outings while going 8-1 in the past nine against teams with a winning overall mark. The under is 4-0 in Happ's past four at home, 4-0-1 in the past five overall and 5-1 in his past six at home vs. winning teams, while the under is 5-1 in New York's past six at home against righties, too.

In the final game of the day, the Halos and Cardinals wrap up their interleague series, the first return of Albert Pujols to St. Louis. He was greeted warmly in the series opener on Friday, but the Cards treated the Halos rudely in that one.

LHP Tyler Skaggs works for the Angels against RHP Miles Mikolas. The Angels are 8-2 in the past 10 starts by Skaggs when working on four days of rest, 9-3 in the past 12 road outings against winning teams and 4-0 in his past four overall against teams with a winning overall mark. The Angels are also 5-2 in the past seven vs. RHP.

For Mikolas, the Cardinals are an impressive 16-4 in his past 20 starts when he receives five days of rest, while going 12-4 across his past 16 at home. However, they're just 2-5 over his past seven overall. The Cards are also a dismal 1-4 in the past five interleague games vs. LHP, while going 9-23 in the past 32 interleague home games against southpaws.

Weather Report
On Sunday, the early games will see variable winds and no precipitation, so enjoy!

The rains should clear out for the Twins-Royals finale at Kauffman Stadium, but the winds will be gusting 12-15 mph to left-center field. The Mets and Cubs will be racing against the clock, as the rains are expected to blow in during the mid innings. The wind will also be blowing, up to 11-14 mph to left field.

For the second straight day, the White Sox and Rangers will be facing stiff winds from 16-19 mph blowing in from right field to home plate. Lastly, the Sunday night game might be slightly delayed, as there is a 40 percent chance of rain at first pitch. However, the rains are supposed to move out by 7 p.m. ET, down to 15 percent, so expect the game to be played.
