LEADING OFF: Kluber shut down, Mets making moves
August 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

KLUBOT POWERS BACK DOWN

Indians ace Corey Kluber has been shut down for two weeks with an abdominal strain, an injury he sustained during his comeback from a broken arm. Kluber was pulled from a minor league start for Triple-A Columbus at Charlotte on Sunday after one inning because of abdominal tightness. He returned to Cleveland and the team said imaging tests confirmed the strain. The Indians said the two-time Cy Young winner will not throw for two weeks before he's re-examined and a plan is formulated. The right-hander hopes to be part of Cleveland's playoff push.

QUEENS CRUNCH TIME

The Mets are back on a roll, and it's a well-timed one with a string of playoff contenders on the schedule. New York beat Cleveland 9-2 on Tuesday night for its fourth win in five games, and that pushed the club to 25-10 since the All-Star break. Marcus Stroman is slated to make his fourth start since being traded to the Mets prior to the trade deadline, and New York has won each of his first three outings. Adam Plutko is the scheduled starter for the Indians. After finishing this three-game series Thursday, the Mets will host the Braves and Cubs for three games each, then face the Phillies twice with the Nationals sandwiched in between.

TIGER TIME

Astros ace Justin Verlander is set to pitch against former teammate Miguel Cabrera for the first time in his career. The duo played together on the Tigers for parts of 10 seasons, but they've never squared off for a regular season at-bat. Verlander has faced Detroit three times since being traded away late in the 2017 season, but Cabrera was out of the lineup for all three meetings.

SURLY STARTS

Tensions are running high between the Marlins and Braves once again. Atlanta manager Brian Snitker was ejected for arguing with umpires after Miami starter Elieser Hernandez plunked Ronald Acuna Jr. with the first pitch of Tuesday's game. Acuna has been hit three times by the Marlins, most notably on Aug. 15, 2018 by Jose Urena - also with the first pitch of a game. Both benches cleared after that incident.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Lucas Giolito, Chicago White Sox (13-6, 3.41 ERA, $877)

Giolito has been stingy over his last three outings, posting three straight quality starts with a 3.50 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in outings at L.A., versus Oakland and at Detroit. The righty has 32 strikeouts in that span. Giolito is also great on the road, with an 8-2 mark and 2.91 ERA over 12 away outings this season. Chicago is a +150 underdog at Minnesota with the total at nine runs.

SLUMPING

Drew Smyly, Philadelphia Phillies (2-6, 7.09 ERA, $290)

Philadelphia?s lefty limps into this Wednesday?s road interleague outing with Boston having allowed 14 earned runs through his last 15 2-3 innings, calculating into an ERA just north of 8.00 over his previous three starts. He?s served up six home runs to opposing batters in that span and now faces a Red Sox lineup that has 103 dingers in Fenway Park this season. Philadelphia is a +135 road dog with the total set at 12 runs.

3 STRIKES

OUT OF THIS WORLD

Ace Justin Verlander and the Astros will likely find themselves as a last-minute kick-in to plenty of MLB parlays tonight, with Houston pegged as a -525 home moneyline favorite versus Detroit at BetAmerica. This is the second time Verlander and the Stros have been faves of four dollars or more this season, with Houston losing at -429 at Baltimore on August 11 and winning at -414 versus Seattle on August 4. Verlander has struck out double figures in six straight outings and his strikeout Over/Under for tonight?s game versus his former club is set at 9.5 (Over -140). That looks much better than laying Houston 1/5 or worse.

HOME RUN HAPP

Yankees starter J.A. Happ takes the bump versus the Oakland A?s tonight, coming off a rare outing in which he didn?t allow a single home run to opposing bats. In his 24 starts this season, the lefty has pitched just six games in which he didn?t get hit for at least one dinger and has given up 29 round-trippers on the season. The A?s have 102 homers inside Oakland Coliseum with slugger Mike Chapman posing the biggest pop at the plate. He hasn?t gone yard since belting two on August 15 and is priced at +325 to hit Over 0.5 home runs tonight.

INTERLEAGUE EDGE

The New York Mets have been holding it down for the Senior Circuit in interleague action in 2019, taking a 13-5 record versus the American League into tonight?s Game 2 with Cleveland. The Mets thumped the Tribe 9-2 Tuesday night and went 2-1 in a three-game set at Kansas City last weekend. New York has beaten AL foes by an average score of 5.8 to 4.5 on the season and have a team total of 4.5 runs (Over -125) tonight.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet
Kevin Rogers

Phillies at Red Sox (-163, 12) ? 7:10 PM EST

Philadelphia (65-60) jumped out to a fast start in the opener of a two-game interleague series at Fenway Park, as the Phillies posted three runs in the first inning. The Phillies didn?t score a run in the final eight innings, but they held off the Red Sox (67-60) to end a two-game losing skid, 3-2. Boston had an opportunity to tie the game in the ninth inning following a lead-off double by Xander Bogaerts, but he was erased on a fielder?s choice at third base, then Andrew Benintendi lined into a double play to end the game.

The Phillies received another solid outing from ace Aaron Nola, who tossed seven innings for his 12th victory of the season, while Philadelphia gained a game on Washington in the Wild Card race to sit two games out of the final playoff spot. Meanwhile, Boston slipped to six games behind Oakland and Tampa Bay for the second Wild Card position in the American League, while falling to 2-4 at home in interleague play.

Left-hander Drew Smyly (2-6, 7.09 ERA) strung together a pair of solid outings after getting acquired by the Phillies in July by allowing one run in a pair of wins over the Pirates and Giants. However, Smyly has gone backwards recently by giving up 16 runs in his past three starts, but Philadelphia has won his last two outings, including the dramatic comeback victory over Chicago last Thursday on Bryce Harper?s walk-off grand slam.

Rick Porcello (11-9, 5.49 ERA) counters for Boston as the 2016 Cy Young winner makes his sixth consecutive home start. Porcello defeated the hapless Orioles in his past trip to the mound last Friday by tossing six innings and allowing one run in six innings of a 9-1 blowout as a -275 favorite. Boston has won six of Porcello?s last eight outings, but he has been the beneficiary of tremendous run support, as the Red Sox have plated at least seven runs in seven of his past nine starts.

Indians at Mets (-154, 9) ? 7:10 PM EST

New York (65-60) remained on fire at Citi Field by improving to 12-2 since the All-Star break by pulling away from Cleveland, 9-2 on Tuesday. The Mets were aided by home runs from Michael Conforto and J.D. Davis, while Steven Matz moved to 6-0 at home by tossing 6.1 innings and yielding two runs. New York and Philadelphia own the same record, as the Mets remain two games behind the Cubs for the final Wild Card spot in the National League.

The Indians (74-52) are still the top Wild Card team in the American League as the Athletics and Rays also lost on Tuesday, but Cleveland slipped three games behind Minnesota for the top spot in the American League Central race. Since the Indians grabbed three of four from the Twins earlier this month at Target Field, Cleveland has lost five of eight games, including three of five on its current trip through New York.

The Mets have yet to lose with Marcus Stroman (7-11, 3.21 ERA) on the mound, as the former Blue Jays? hurler is coming off his best start since getting traded to New York. Stroman scattered four hits and yielded three runs in 5.1 innings of a 10-8 triumph at Atlanta as a +110 underdog as the Mets jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead. Stroman?s final start in Toronto was a 4-0 defeat to Cleveland on July 24 as the right-hander allowed only one run in seven innings, but Indians? ace Shane Bieber tossed a complete-game one-hitter.

Adam Plutko (5-3, 4.67 ERA) was aided by a seven-run first inning in his previous start as the Indians dominated the Yankees, 19-5 as a +140 underdog last Thursday. The Indians have won three of Plutko?s past four outings, while owning a solid 4-1 mark in his five starts away from Progressive Field this season. Plutko has seen the UNDER cash in four of his last five appearances, but tonight?s total of nine is the lowest in this stretch as his last five totals closed at 10 or higher.

Brewers at Cardinals (-108, 8 ?) ? 7:45 PM EST

The merry-go-round for the top spot in the National League Central continues as the Cardinals (67-57) are currently the leader in the division after winning their third straight game on Tuesday. St. Louis blew out Milwaukee (64-62) at Busch Stadium, 9-4 as the Cardinals scored eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings. The Cardinals have defeated the Brewers in five consecutive matchups dating back to April, while the home team has captured 10 of 12 meetings this season.

The Brewers are not only losing their grip in the division race, but Milwaukee is 3 ? games behind Chicago for the second Wild Card spot in the National League. Milwaukee has lost six of its past seven games, with the only two wins in this span coming in last Saturday?s wild 15-14 extra-innings triumph at Washington and a 6-5 comeback victory over Minnesota last Wednesday.

Milwaukee owns a 2-4 record when trying to avoid a road sweep as the Brewers turn to Adrian Houser (5-5, 3.76 ERA) in the series finale. Houser has pitched well since returning to the rotation in late July although Milwaukee has posted a 1-3 mark in his past four starts. The right-hander has allowed one earned run in three of four starts, including yielding only two hits in seven innings of a 2-1 setback at Washington last Friday. Houser?s biggest issue has been run support as the Brewers have scored two runs or less in five of his past six starts.

The Cardinals have won four of five times when seeking a home sweep this season, as Adam Wainwright (9-8, 4.33 ERA) takes the hill. Wainwright has excelled since a slow start, as St. Louis has posted a strong 7-1 record in his last eight trips to the mound. The Cardinals are 3-0 in the right-hander?s last three home starts, while the veteran dominated the Brewers in his previous outing against them on April 24 in a 5-2 victory as he yielded four hits and one run in six innings.

Yankees at Athletics (-114, 9 ?) ? 10:05 PM EST

Before Tuesday, the last time these two teams hooked up came in the Wild Card round in the Bronx last October as New York ripped Oakland, 7-2 to advance to the American League Divisional Series. The Athletics (72-53) picked up a bit of revenge in last night?s 6-2 victory over the Yankees (83-44) to cash as +115 underdogs. Oakland plated three runs in the first inning off Domingo German, highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Matt Olson and Mark Canha.

The A?s remain in the second Wild Card position in the American League as they barely lead the Rays by a single percentage point. Oakland improved to 10-2 in its last 12 games at RingCentral Coliseum, while New York fell to 2-3 in its past five road series openers. The Yankees are looking to avoid their first three-game losing streak since late July when New York dropped three in a row at Boston.

Mike Fiers (11-3, 3.46 ERA) likely won?t take home the American League Cy Young award this season, but the right-hander has found his place in Oakland after being acquired from Detroit last July. Fiers is unbeaten in his past five outings, while coming off his worst outing since April in a 7-6 victory over Houston his last time out. The veteran received a no-decision as he was tagged for four home runs in six innings, but the A?s improved to 6-1 in his last seven home outings. Fiers defeated the Yankees twice last season, including as a +138 home underdog in an 8-2 blowout last September as he scattered three hits in six innings.

J.A. Happ (10-7, 5.40 ERA) has been wildly inconsistent of late as the Yankees have alternated wins and losses in his previous five starts. Happ defeated the Orioles in his last outing, 6-5 as a hefty -235 favorite, but the Yankees have won consecutive starts made by the southpaw once since early June. New York owns a solid 8-2 record in Happ?s 10 road starts this season, while the Yankees beat the A?s with the left-hander on the mound last September in a 5-1 comeback win as they scored all five runs in the final three innings.

Kiermaier drives in 4, Rays beat Mariners 7-6
August 21, 2019
By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) Justin Verlander pitched a two-hitter and lost, allowing homers to John Hicks and Ronny Rodriguez as the Detroit Tigers beat the Houston Astros 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Hicks led off the ninth with a tiebreaking blast to left-center field off Verlander (15-5), who leads the majors in strikeouts with 239 but ranks second in homers allowed with 33.

The veteran right-hander retired the first 14 batters, with six strikeouts, before Rodriguez homered to the seats in right with two outs in the fifth. Verlander sat down another 10 straight before Hicks connected.

With Verlander on the mound at home against the worst team in the majors, the Astros were more than a 5-1 favorite, one of the biggest favorites in an MLB game that Las Vegas oddsmakers could remember.

Buck Farmer (5-4) walked one in a scoreless eighth and Joe Jimenez finished the Tigers' six-hitter for his fourth save.

METS 4, INDIANS 3, 10 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - J.D. Davis lined an RBI single with two outs that capped a two-run rally in the 10th inning, and New York beat Cleveland.

All-Star reliever Brad Hand's failure to cover first base on a potential game-ending double-play grounder cost Cleveland. Davis made the Indians pay with his first career game-ending hit.

The Mets won their fourth in a row and for the 20th time in 25 games, moving a season-high six over .500.

Carlos Santana hit a solo home run with two outs in the Cleveland 10th off Luis Avilan (4-1) for a 3-2 lead.

Amed Rosario opened the Mets 10th with a double off Hand (6-4), who later broke for the plate on what could have been a double play as the tying run scored.

CUBS 12, GIANTS 11

CHICAGO (AP) - Kris Bryant hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning to give Chicago a wild victory over San Francisco.

Nicholas Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber also connected for Chicago, which has won four straight despite losing leads twice in the last four innings. The Cubs moved back into first place in the NL Central by a half-game over St. Louis, which lost to Milwaukee in a rain-shortened game.

Castellanos, who went 4 for 5, has homered in three straight games for the second time in his career.

Evan Longoria, Mike Yastrzemski, Stephen Vogt and Kevin Pillar homered for San Francisco, which has dropped three straight.

Castellanos led off the eighth with an infield single to set the stage for Bryant, who stroked a 1-1 pitch from Reyes Moronta (3-7) into the left field bleachers.

Brandon Kintzler (3-2) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win and Craig Kimbrel worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 11th save.

BREWERS 5, CARDINALS 3, 7+ INNINGS

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Mike Moustakas homered and Keston Hiura drove in a pair of runs to lead Milwaukee over St. Louis in a rain-shortened game.

The game was stopped after 7+ innings and made official following a rain delay of 66 minutes.

Milwaukee broke a six-game losing streak against the Cardinals, who were knocked out of first place in the NL Central - falling one-half game behind the Cubs.

Adrian Houser (6-5) gave up three runs - one earned - and six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Junior Guerra got the last out in the bottom of the seventh and earned his third save.

Moustakas, who also walked three times, hit a three-run homer in the first off Adam Wainwright (9-9) to highlight a four-run outburst.

PHILLIES 5, RED SOX 2

BOSTON (AP) - Bryce Harper homered to give Philadelphia a fifth-inning lead, and Corey Dickerson drove in two runs with a triple and a single to help the Phillies sweep a two-game series with Boston.

Jared Hughes (4-5) earned the win with 1 1/3 hitless innings of relief after Drew Smyly lasted just 3 2/3 innings. Hector Neris pitched the ninth for his 23rd save.

Rick Porcello (11-10) allowed just one hit through four innings before Cesar Hernandez led off the fifth with a double.

Hernandez took off on a wild pitch and scored when the throw got past Rafael Devers at third base. After a walk, Harper cleared the Green Monster with a two-run shot, his 27th homer of the year.

RAYS 7, MARINERS 6

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Kevin Kiermaier drove in four runs, including a solo homer during a two-run ninth inning, and Tampa Bay beat Seattle to avoid a three-game sweep.

Kiermaier tied it at 6-6 on a leadoff homer against Matt Magill (3-1). The Rays then loaded the bases on Willy Adames' single, a double by Mike Brosseau and an intentional walk to pinch-hitter Ji-Man Choi with no outs before Magill's wild pitch with Tommy Pham batting allowed Adames to score the winning run.

Daniel Vogelbach had a solo homer and Mallex Smith added a two-run triple off Emilio Pagan (3-2) as the Mariners went up 6-5 in the top of the ninth.

Tampa Bay ace Charlie Morton was bidding for his 14th win but struggled in a five-inning, 99-pitch start, giving up three runs, four hits, two walks and striking out three.

WHITE SOX 4, TWINS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Lucas Giolito pitched a three-hit shutout of the second-highest scoring team in the major leagues, racking up 12 strikeouts as Chicago took the series from AL Central-leading Minnesota.

Giolito (14-6) allowed only runner past first base, a double by Jonathan Schoop in the eighth. The 25-year-old fanned Jake Cave to finish that inning and reach double-digit strikeouts for the third straight time, the first White Sox starter to do so since Chris Sale did so in eight consecutive turns in 2015.

Giolito matched Cleveland's Shane Bieber for the major league lead with his third complete game of the season. The White Sox and Indians have a baseball-best five apiece. Giolito got his with 115 pitches, without a walk.

Jose Abreu went 3 for 5 with two RBIs for the White Sox, with Leury Garcia and Tim Anderson each producing two hits. The trio scored all four runs against Twins starter Jake Odorizzi (13-6).

BRAVES 5, MARLINS 0

ATLANTA (AP) - Adeiny Hechavarria and Ronald Acuna Jr. each hit a two-run homer, Julio Teheran struck out a season-high nine and Atlanta beat Miami.

The Braves are 14-4 against Miami this year after winning the 2018 season series between the NL East rivals 14-5.

Teheran (8-8) combined with Sean Newcomb and Josh Tomlin for a seven-hitter. The right-hander allowed five hits in seven innings.

Acuna's shot off Caleb Smith (8-7) in the fifth cleared the center field wall. His team-leading 36th homer came one night after he was hit by Elieser Hernandez's first pitch, leading to the ejection of Braves manager Brian Snitker.

NATIONALS 11, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Patrick Corbin pitched eight scoreless innings to remain unbeaten in more than two months, and Asdrubal Cabrera's three-run home run capped a six-run third as Washington rolled past Pittsburgh.

Corbin (10-5) struck out four and walked two while throwing 93 pitches to help the Nationals maintain their lead atop the NL wild-card standings.

Joe Musgrove (8-12) gave up six runs and seven hits in five innings as Pittsburgh lost for the 29th time in 37 games since the All-Star break.

ORIOLES 8, ROYALS 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Baltimore tied a major league record by allowing its 258th home run this season but hit four of its own to beat Kansas City.

Anthony Santander and Renato Nunez hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning for the Orioles, who won their first series since July 25-27 at the Los Angeles Angels. Jonathan Villar and Hanser Alberto also went deep.

Whit Merrifield's homer was the record-tying blast against Baltimore. The Orioles have 35 games to surpass the 2016 Cincinnati Reds for the most homers allowed in a season.

Aaron Brooks (3-7) picked up his first win in eight starts with the Orioles since being claimed on waivers from Oakland on July 6.

Villar put the Orioles ahead with a two-run shot off Mike Montgomery (3-6).

RANGERS 8, ANGELS 7

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Hunter Pence drove in three runs, including an RBI single in the ninth inning that pushed Texas past Los Angeles.

Elvis Andrus led off the ninth with a single up the middle off Trevor Cahill (3-8), the seventh Angels pitcher. After two wild pitches got Andrus to third, Pence grounded a single through the left side of the infield.

The Rangers won three times in the four-game series.

Jonathan Hernandez (1-0) worked the final 2 1/3 innings to win in his major league debut.

REDS 4, PADRES 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Luis Castillo shook off his worst career start to pitch six solid innings and Jose Iglesias hit a solo home run to pace the Reds.

Castillo (12-5), who allowed nine hits and eight runs on Friday against St. Louis, bounced back to limit San Diego to five hits and one run with four strikeouts.

The Reds sent nine batters to the plate while scoring three runs in a third inning, started by Eric Yardley (0-1), who got the loss in his major league debut.

Nick Senzel led off with a line drive that left fielder Josh Naylor misplayed for a two-base error and scored one out later on Eugenio Suarez's single.

Iglesias lofted his ninth homer of the season into the seats down the left-field line with one out in the fourth inning for a 4-1 lead.

Cincinnati's Michael Lorenzen had two strikeouts in a perfect eighth. Raisel Iglesias had two strikeouts in the ninth on the way to his 26th save.

ROCKIES 7, DIAMONDBACKS 2

PHOENIX (AP) - Tim Melville pitched seven innings of two-hit ball in his first major league appearance in almost two years, and Colorado cruised past Arizona.

Melville (1-0), a 29-year-old right-hander with just six previous big-league appearances who started this season in independent ball, limited Arizona to a first-inning double and a sixth-inning home run to go with four strikeouts and two walks. He also picked up his first major-league hit - a two-out, fourth-inning single - and his first two career RBIs.

Ketel Marte and Alex Avila homered for the Diamondbacks, who had their four-game win streak snapped.

The Rockies jumped on struggling Arizona starter Mike Leake (9-10) early with two runs on three straight singles and a fielder's choice in the top of the first.

Thursday?s 6-pack

Franchises for the XFL, which starts play in February:

? DC Defenders

? Dallas Renegades

? Houston Roughnecks

? Los Angeles Wildcats

? New York Guardians

? St Louis Battle Hawks

? Seattle Dragons

? Tampa Bay Vipers

Quote of the Day
?A case could be made that the younger guy?s not ready. I think, a lot of times, and I understand that thought process, but I?m the one dealing with the individual player, and sometimes guys just aren?t ready. And the whole sink-or-swim mentality, it?s easy for somebody on the outside to say, but for that individual player and the best interest of that individual person, that might not be the case ? If a guy?s ready, we put him out there. If he?s not, we won?t put him out there. And I think that?s the right way to approach it.?
Dolphins? coach Brian Flores

Thursday?s quiz

Wednesday?s quiz

Tuesday?s quiz

************************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??.

13) Tom Brady has won six Super Bowls, Joe Montana won four, but to me, John Elway is the best QB I?ve ever seen. Just my opinion.

12) Raiders-Packers play an exhibition game Thursday night in Winnipeg, Manitoba; not really sure why, but it keeps the baseball infield in Oakland in slightly better shape. Wonder how the folks at Hard Knocks feel about trekking to Canada for a few days.

11) One thing about interleague play; it occasionally allows the schedule gurus to keep road teams in the same city for a week at a time. Indians have been in NYC for the last week; A?s were in Chicago for a week earlier this month. Makes life on the road a little easier.

10) Rays 7, Mariners 6? Tampa Bay scored twice in bottom of 9th inning.

9) Just when you thought the world couldn?t get stranger.
From the New York Post:

?Major League Baseball sent a memo on Monday warning about the ?very real risk? of over-the-counter sexual enhancement pills, after at least two players have blamed them for positive PED tests so far this year.

The memo says the pills in question are ?often contaminated with prohibited and unsafe ingredients? including anabolic steroids. It reminded players that anyone who tests positive for a banned substance is subject to discipline by the league ? regardless of how it got into their system.?

Alrighty then.

8) Detroit 2, Houston 1- Astros (-$550) were biggest favorite in a major league game in at least 15 years. Veteran bookmaker Chris Andrews has been in the business 40+ years; he said they were the biggest favorite he could remember.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Astros put SS Carlos Correa (back) on the IL.
? Pirates put P Chris Archer (shoulder) on IL.
? Rockies put P Jon Gray (foot) on IL.

6) Freshman Bo Nix was named Auburn?s starting QB; he is the first true frosh QB to start the season opener for Auburn since 1946.

5) Every team in baseball could have taken Gio Urshela, Mike Yastrzemski or Aristides Aquino last winter in the Rule 5 Draft; all three are productive big leaguers right now.

4) Houston?s Yordan Alvarez (22) is the youngest player to walk four times in a game since Barry Bonds (21) in 1986.

3) 85-year-old talk show host Larry King filed for divorce this week from his 7th wife, Shawn King, after 22 years of marriage.

Forgot who said this, but I remember reading this a long time ago:
?Second marriages are a triumph of hope over experience.?

Trivia: None of Larry King?s first three marriages lasted longer than two years.

2) 11 of last 14 years, at least one Week 1 NFL underdog of +$200 or more has won SU:
Bengals +$375 at Seattle
Redskins +$325 at Philly
Giants +$285 at Dallas
Texans +$250 at New Orleans
Steelers +$220 at New England

1) XFL?s Seattle Dragons might have a small problem with their new logo, since it looks almost exactly the same as UAB?s Blazer logo.

LEADING OFF: Mad Max and Gerrit Cole return, Fenway freebie
August 21, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

WELCOME BACK, MAD MAX

Nationals ace Max Scherzer comes off the injured list to start at last-place Pittsburgh. The three-time Cy Young Award winner is 9-5 with a 2.41 ERA in 20 starts but has pitched only once over the past six weeks because of a strained muscle in his back. His 12.7 strikeouts per nine innings lead the National League. Washington currently holds a wild-card spot.

FENWAY FREEBIE

The Boston Red Sox are offering free admission to fans under the age of 18 for the 1:05 p.m. EDT conclusion of a game against Kansas City that was suspended on Aug. 7 because of rain. An admission fee of $5 for adults will be donated to the Jimmy Fund. Play will resume in the top of the 10th inning with the score tied 4-all and Josh Taylor working with a 2-1 count on Royals catcher Meibrys Viloria.

HEALTH WATCH

Three-time All-Star Gerrit Cole (14-5, 2.87 ERA) makes his first start in 15 days for AL West-leading Houston after being scratched last week due to discomfort in his right hamstring. Cole, second in the majors with 226 strikeouts, has won 10 straight decisions. Jordan Zimmermann (1-8, 6.66) gets the ball for Detroit, which has the worst record in the majors even after beating Astros ace Justin Verlander 2-1 Wednesday night as one of the largest MLB underdogs in recent memory. Zimmerman allowed one hit in five scoreless innings last time out against Tampa Bay.

ONE FOR THE MONEY

The next time the Orioles give up a home run, they will break the major league record for most allowed in one season. Last-place Baltimore shares the mark with the 2016 Cincinnati Reds after serving up No. 258 on the year Wednesday night in an 8-1 victory over Kansas City. ''We're all tired of seeing them and hopefully we can get better going forward,'' Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. Asher Wojciechowski (2-6, 4.78 ERA), who has served up 12 long balls in 49 innings, starts at Camden Yards against Tampa Bay.
