STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Trevor Bauer, Cleveland Indians (1-0, 0.64 ERA, $200): Bauer is looking fully healthy and as dominant as ever after his first two starts of the season. The right-hander has allowed just one run on just one hit, while striking out 17 in 14 innings pitched.

Bauer and the Indians will look to stay hot as they continue their series with the Tigers Wednesday afternoon. Cleveland goes for its sixth straight win and are healthy -145 faves to do so, with a total of 7 today in Detroit.

SLUMPING

Yu Darvish, Chicago Cubs (0-1, 8.10 ERA, $-260): This was supposed to be a year of redemption for Darvish. And it still might be. It just isn?t yet. The Japanese right-hander has been battling his control all season. He has issues 11 walks in just 6.2 innings pitched and has an ugly 2.70 WHIP.

He?ll look to take that first step when the Cubs host the Pirates Wednesday night. The Cubs are hefty -175 favorites with a total of 7.5.

3 STRIKES

WINDY CITY LIVING UP TO ITS NAME

It?s going to be a windy day at Wrigley Field, where winds will be blowing 17-20 miles per hour straight in from center field and oddsmakers have taken notice. Despite this being a matchup between the Pirates? Jordan Lyles and the Cubs? slumping Yu Darvish (not to mention their bullpen), the total for this one has been set at 7. The Cubs are 8-2 O/U for the season, while the Pirates are 5-4 O/U. Check out our MLB Weather page for the latest forecasts for all of today?s games.

A TORN IN HIS SIDE

Phillies starter Nick Pivetta is a young right-hander who shows some potential, but there has been no team that has been a bigger thorn in his side than the Washington Nationals. The Phillies have lost all six of his starts against the Nationals, with his career numbers sitting at an ugly 9.37 ERA and a 2.29 WHIP. We guess oddsmakers are expecting the Phillies offense to carry them tonight, setting them as -160 favorites with a total of 9.

HALOS AT HOME

The Los Angeles Angels have found their hitting Halos in the comforts of home. The Angels have scored 6.2 runs per game in their last five home games, winning all of them. This probably has nothing to do with the Mike Trout guy getting hot, does it? Today, they try to make it six straight at home as they send Felix Pena to the bump to face of against the Brewers? Brandon Woodruff. The Angels are currently +130 home dogs with a total of 8.

Altuve powers Astros to first-ever sweep of Yankees
April 10, 2019
By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) Jose Altuve hit two homers, Carlos Correa homered with three RBIs and the Houston Astros completed their first-ever sweep of the New York Yankees with an 8-6 win Wednesday night.

The Astros needed late-game comebacks to win the first two games of the series but used a four-run fifth inning to break the finale open and held on for their sixth straight win despite a big eighth inning by the Yankees.

It's the first time since 2004 the Astros have swept a homestand of at least two series. They beat the Athletics three times this weekend before the Yankees arrived.

Altuve, who has homered in three straight games, hit his first one off James Paxton (1-2) to tie it at 1 in the first inning after Brett Gardner hit a leadoff homer for New York.

The Astros were up by 1 with no outs in the fifth inning when Altuve connected off Paxton again. The towering shot clanged off the light pole atop the wall in left field to make it 4-2.

A single by Michael Brantley chased Paxton, who was replaced by Tommy Kahnle. He was greeted by a two-run home run by Correa that extended Houston's lead to 6-2. Houston made it 7-2 on an RBI single by Jake Marisnick with two outs in the inning.

Houston starter Collin McHugh (2-1) allowed four hits and two runs while striking out nine in six innings for his second straight win.

PADRES 3, GIANTS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Manny Machado put San Diego ahead with his third home run of the season in a win over San Francisco.

Signed to a $300 million, 10-year contract, Machado broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with an opposite-field drive to right on a fastball from Dereck Rodriguez (1-2). Machado went 1 for 4 and is hitting .244 with six RBIs.

Wil Myers added a run-scoring single in the ninth off Will Smith, and the Padres won for the fifth time in seven games.

Nick Margevicius (1-1) got his first major league win. Making his third start, the 23-year-old left-hander allowed one run and five hits in six innings with no walks and six strikeouts, including his last four hitters. He retired his first nine batters before a home run by Kevin Pillar, who has nine RBIs in his last three games. Right-handed hitters were 1 for 27 against Margevicius before the homer.

Kirby Yates pitched the ninth to remain perfect in seven save chances and finish a seven-hitter.

CARDINALS 7, DODGERS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Yadier Molina and Marcell Ozuna homered, Jack Flaherty tossed six effective innings and St. Louis beat Los Angeles.

The Cardinals have won four in a row and will try to sweep the four-game series Thursday. They have outscored their opponents 19-6 during the winning streak.

Max Muncy and Joc Pederson homered for the Dodgers, who have lost three straight after a five-game winning streak.

Paul DeJong had three hits and drove in a run with a triple in the sixth. DeJong extended his career-best hitting streak to 11 games. He is tied with San Francisco's Brandon Crawford for the longest current streak in the National League.

Flaherty (1-0) gave up three hits and one run in his 99-pitch effort. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter. He has permitted one run over 11 innings in his last two starts.

Molina, who drove in three runs, homered off Kenta Maeda (2-1) in the sixth to push the lead to a 5-1. Ozuna, who had three hits, added a two-run drive in the eighth.

RAYS 9, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Tommy Pham homered twice and extended his on-base streak to a club record 45 games, leading Tampa Bay to its first series sweep in Chicago.

Austin Meadows had a single, double, home run and three RBIs for the Rays, who outscored Chicago 24-7 over three games. Tampa Bay won its four straight game and the AL East-leading Rays improved to 10-3, their best start since 2010.

Chicago lost its fifth consecutive game and at 3-8 is off to its worst opening since 1997.

Reynaldo Lopez (0-2) fell behind 3-0 within 18 pitches.

Meadows was 7 for 10 in the series with two homers, seven RBIs and four runs.

Acquired with Meadows from Pittsburgh last summer, Tampa Bay starter Tyler Glasnow (3-0) struck out a career-high 11 in six innings. Meadows allowed two hits in six shutout innings, lowering his ERA to 0.53 in three starts.

NATIONALS 15, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jeremy Hellickson pitched three-hit ball over six innings, Matt Adams drove in four runs and Washington routed Philadelphia.

One night after wasting a five-run lead in a 10-6 loss in 10 innings, the Phillies were flat. Bryce Harper was 0 for 2 with a walk against his former team, and an offense that was averaging 6.3 runs per game got shut down by four pitchers.

Hellickson (1-0) struck out six in his first start this season. He was Philadelphia's opening day starter in 2016-17.

Phillies outfielder Aaron Altherr struck out Brian Dozier and Yan Gomes while allowing one run in the ninth.

Nationals reliever Trevor Rosenthal retired a batter for the first time this season after allowing his first 10 to reach safely. He walked a hitter before striking out Andrew Knapp. Rosenthal then walked two more to load the bases. He gave up a run on a groundout, but Altherr flied out to end it.

The Nationals jumped on Nick Pivetta (1-1) for three runs in the first and kept piling on. They outscored the Phillies 24-1 in the final 15 innings over two games.

PIRATES 5, CUBS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Jordan Lyles struck out 10 in crisp six innings to tie a career high, Francisco Cervelli and Starling Marte homered off Yu Darvish, and Pittsburgh topped Chicago.

Lyles (1-0) allowed three hits and was sharp again in his second start, with Jason Heyward's solo shot in the fifth accounting for the lone run against him. The right-hander walked only one as Pittsburgh bounced back from a 10-0 drubbing in the Cubs' home opener Monday to win for the fifth time in six games.

Heyward had three hits and Javier Baez drove in run with a double in the eighth, but Felipe Vazquez got the final five outs for his third save in as many chances.

Darvish (0-2) and the Cubs (3-8) continued to struggle on a 40-degree night at Wrigley Field with the wind blowing in from center field at 20 mph.

ATHLETICS 10, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Oakland slugger Khris Davis homered twice and had three hits, Baltimore's Chris Davis extended his record hitless streak to 50 at-bats and the Athletics beat the Orioles.

Chad Pinder, Matt Chapman and Jurickson Profar also homered for Oakland, which can take the four-game series Thursday.

Chris Davis entered as a pinch-hitter in the ninth and flied out to center. He's 0 for 29 this season and hasn't gotten a hit since Sept. 14.

Oakland starter Frankie Montas (2-1) allowed three runs and three hits with three strikeouts and a walk over six innings.

Trey Mancini and Rio Ruiz each homered for the rebuilding Orioles, who have lost six of seven and fell two games below .500 for the first time this season.

Pinder provided the early lead with a solo homer in the second off Dan Straily (0-1). The A's increased the lead to 3-0 an inning later when Chapman, who went 3 for 4, had an RBI double and scored on a single by Davis.

METS 9, TWINS 6

NEW YORK (AP) - Jake Odorizzi and Minnesota's bullpen suddenly went wild, allowing seven straight batters to reach base despite not hitting a single fair ball and letting Noah Syndergaard and New York stroll past the Twins.

One day after the teams set a Citi Field record by totaling 10 home runs in the Twins' 14-8 romp, the Mets barely had to swing to build a big lead.

A startling stretch that kept snowballing saw Odorizzi, newly promoted reliever Andrew Vasquez and Trevor Hildenberger combine to walk six and hit a batter with a pitch without getting an out. At one point, the Twins threw 21 pitches - 19 missed the strike zone, many of them bouncing or sailing all over.

Wilson Ramos grounded a two-run single that capped the crazy six-run rally in the fifth inning. The Mets could've scored more, but Jeff McNeil was picked off third after hesitating on a bases-loaded pitch that skittered to the backstop.

Syndergaard (1-1) had permitted just two hits in taking a 9-1 lead into the eighth, and was pulled after giving up a single, double and triple to begin the inning.

It had already been a strange season for Odorizzi (0-2) - he struck out 11 against Cleveland, then got only two outs while being tagged by Philadelphia - before this bizarre start.

TIGERS 4, INDIANS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Trevor Bauer allowed home runs to Niko Goodrum and John Hicks, who powered Detroit over Cleveland for the Tigers' sixth win in seven games.

Bauer (1-1) gave up four runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings for the Indians. He had allowed one run and one hit in his first two starts.

Miguel Cabrera singled with two outs in the first, and Goodrum sent the next pitch over the right-field wall.

Hicks homered leading off the sixth for a 3-1 lead, Gordon Beckham doubled with one out, and Josh Harrison singled on a bouncer up the middle to chase Bauer.

Matt Boyd (1-1) allowed one run and four hits in six innings with six strikeouts that raised his total to 29 in 17 1/3 innings over three starts.

Shane Greene, Detroit's sixth pitcher, got three straight outs for his eighth save in eight appearances, ending Cleveland's five-game winning streak. He became the first big leaguer with eight saves in his team's first 12 games.

REDS 2, MARLINS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jose Iglesias led off the eighth inning with a tying homer - only Cincinnati's second hit of the game - and Jesse Winker connected one out later, rallying the Reds to a victory over Miami.

After dropping eight straight, the Reds (3-8) have taken the first two games against Miami by hitting seven homers. They hit five during a 14-0 victory Tuesday that ended the long slide.

The Reds managed only Matt Kemp's single through the first seven innings and were facing their fifth shutout of the season before pulling off the late rally. Iglesias hit his first homer of the season off Drew Steckenrider (0-2) to tie it, and Winker put the Reds up with his second homer in two games.

Amir Garrett (1-0) went 1 2/3 innings. Raisel Iglesias struck out the side in the ninth for his first save, completing a combined three-hitter.

Thursday?s 6-pack

Odds to win The Masters:

? Rory McIlroy 8-1

? Dustin Johnson 11-1

? Justin Rose 14-1

? Rickie Fowler 15-1

? Jordan Spieth, Eldrick Woods 16-1

? Koepka, Molinari, Rahm, Thomas 20-1

Quote of the Day
?It was a relief at first, like OK, that?s over with, pulling the trigger on retiring, But the closer to spring it got ? I know it?s just a game, but it?s almost like mourning. It was more than a game to us, it was my life since I was a kid. It?s almost like a part of you dies.?
Former big leaguer Will Middlebrooks, talking about retiring

Thursday?s quiz
When was the last time a Canadian franchise won the Stanley Cup?

Wednesday?s quiz
Mike Dunleavy was the Lakers? coach the last time they made the playoffs, in 2013.

Tuesday?s quiz
Kansas beat Memphis 75-68 in OT in the 2008 national title game.

**********************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) Tampa Bay 9, White Sox 1- Rays are off to a 10-3 start; they scored in top of the first inning in all six games on this road trip. Wondering if they prepare differently than other teams, which allows them to score early in games?

12) A gambler wagered $85,000 at a William Hill sportsbook on Eldrick Woods to win The Masters; if Woods wins, the gambler banks $1.19M.

11) Thinking about the Virginia-Texas Tech game Monday night, and how the total opened at 120 and was quickly bet down to 117. Books cleaned up on that, after the 85-77 final.

10) Next fall St John?s will have their 6th hoop coach in 18 years; located in Queens, you?d think the Red Storm would be good at basketball, but over the last 17 years. St John?s is 106-190 in Big East games. Of their last five coaches, Steve Lavin was by far the best.

Why wouldn?t the people who run the school take a deep breath, count to 10, think of all the money they?re about to make and hire Rick Pitino?

9) Baseball wagering advice; next time Freddy Peralta pitches for the Brewers, check the lineup to see who Milwaukee?s catcher is.

When Manny Pina catches Peralta, as he has 75% of the time, batters hit .165 vs Peralta.

When someone else catches Peralta, teams hit around .300 against him.

This isn?t difficult; I mean, I was lucky to graduate from a state college, but even I know that Peralta is a way better pitcher when Pina is his catcher.

8) Twins? OF Max Kepler was born in Germany; both his parents were ballet dancers.

Twins were scheduled to fly home after their game at Citi Field last night, but they might not have made it; they were expecting 15 inches of snow in the Twin Cities, so the plane may have had to land in Milwaukee instead.

7) Coaching carousel:
? BYU hired former Utah Valley coach Mark Pope as its new coach.
? Belmont hired Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander, a Belmont alum.

6) I get this phone call Tuesday afternoon, from some company supposedly trying to get me a job, a job I haven?t asked for, nor one that I want.

Politely tell the woman that I?m not interested, but she rattles on and I listen. She asks if I?m an American citizen, I say yes. Then she asks what year I graduated high school. When I tell her, she abruptly ends the call and hangs up. Alrighty then.

Thanks for nothing, lady.

5) Orlando Magic made the NBA playoffs this year for first time in seven years under coach Steve Clifford, who is in his first year with the Magic.

Coaches often lead a nomadic existence; way back in 1994-95, Clifford spent a season as an assistant coach at Siena College, which is four miles from Armadillo World HQ here in beautiful Colonie, NY.

Siena is a small school; they have a good mid-major basketball program, but its a hell of a long way from the NBA. Credit to coach Clifford for making it to and succeeding in the bigtime.

4) Celtics? Marcus Smart has suffered a torn oblique on his left side and could be sidelined for the first two rounds of the NBA playoffs.

3) Kansas City?s Billy Hamilton scored from second on a long fly ball to centerfield Tuesday night. Hamilton ain?t much of a hitter, but he is a good fielder and is very, very fast.

2) Magic Johnson must?ve been pretty disgusted if he quit without telling Jeannie Buss or Rob Pelinka first; common wisdom seems to be that Johnson didn?t work that hard at the job- he has business interests he deals with, too. Being a team president is a pretty serious job.

He actually said, ?Now I can tweet whenever I like? kind of a stunning thing to say.

1) Just because a guy was a great ballplayer doesn?t mean he will be great at other stuff.

Playing.
Coaching.
Being an executive. Three different skill sets.

Great players can be arrogant about thinking they know more about everything than a guy who didn?t play, or didn?t play as well. That simply isn?t true, and it gets proven every year.

LEADING OFF: Eovaldi, Red Sox in funk, Cards try to sweep LA
April 10, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

SHAKY STARTS

Nathan Eovaldi tries to snap Boston out of its early-season funk. The Red Sox are 3-9 in defense of their World Series championship, and the rotation has an 8.78 ERA. Eovaldi (0-0, 8.10) has struggled during starts against Seattle and Oakland. He'll oppose the Blue Jays, who averaged 2.66 runs over their first 11 games before beating Chris Sale and the Red Sox 7-5 at the Fenway Park home opener Tuesday.

TIEBREAKER GAME

Yadier Molina and the Cardinals go for a four-game sweep of the Dodgers in St. Louis. The longtime National League rivals have played each other 2,074 times since 1892 and the series is even at 1,029-1,029 with 16 ties. St. Louis has won four in a row and outscored its opponents 19-6 during the winning streak. Los Angeles has dropped three straight after a five-game winning streak. Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler (1-0, 6.75 ERA) faces Michael Wacha (0-0, 1.54) in the series finale. Buehler has struck out 18 and allowed only five hits in 15 scoreless innings over two career starts against the Cardinals. Wacha walked a career-high eight in a 6-4 loss to San Diego on Saturday.

RIVALRY RENEWED

The Mets and Braves square off for the first time this season when they open a four-game series in Atlanta. Steven Matz (0.87 ERA) makes his third start of the season for New York, facing Braves right-hander Kevin Gausman (1-0, 0.00). Matz has gone a team-record eight straight starts without getting a decision. He is 4-0 in seven career starts vs. the Braves. Gausman allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings in his first start of the season against Miami. Atlanta, the defending NL East champion, has hit its stride after dropping its first three games of the year. The Braves have won seven of their last eight and scored 48 runs in those eight games.

WELCOME BACK

Yasiel Puig is eligible to return to the lineup as the Reds try for a three-game sweep of Miami. The right fielder was suspended two games for his role in a bench-clearing fracas Sunday in Pittsburgh. Puig decided to accept the penalty rather than appeal, saying he doubted it would make much difference. Cincinnati had lost eight straight before the struggling Marlins arrived.

CHRIS-CROSSED AT CAMDEN

Orioles fans hoping for a breakout from Chris Davis got a cruel twist Wednesday, when Oakland's Khris Davis homered twice and had three hits in a 10-3 A's win. Chris Davis, meanwhile, flied out as a pinch-hitter to extend his record hitless streak to 50 at-bats. Chris Davis could get into the lineup for the series finale against right-hander Aaron Brooks (1-1, 4.09 ERA). He hasn't had a hit since Sept. 14. Khris Davis has seven homers this season, tied for the AL lead with Seattle's Jay Bruce.

GOTTA GET AWAY

The Rockies couldn't get out of Denver soon enough, and not just because a projected winter storm postponed a game against Atlanta on Wednesday night. Colorado has dropped five straight at Coors Field and heads to San Francisco with a 3-9 record this season. Jon Gray (0-2, 5.68 ERA) gets the ball against Jeff Samardzija (0-0, 2.79).

Thursday's Tip Sheet
April 11, 2019
By Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Padres at Diamondbacks ? 9:40 PM EST

The Dodgers have struggled in St. Louis this week, opening the door for the Padres (8-5) to climb closer towards the top of the NL West race. San Diego finished off its second series victory over San Francisco this season in Wednesday?s 3-1 road win at AT&T Park. Nick Margevicius picked up his first Major League win by tossing six innings and allowing one run for the third straight start, while Manny Machado knocked out his third home run of the season for San Diego.

The Diamondbacks (6-6) continue their homestand after going 3-2 against a pair of American League squads in Boston and Texas. Arizona rallied from a 4-0 deficit to stun Texas on a two-run walk-off home run by Jarrod Dyson in Tuesday?s 5-4 triumph, but the D-backs couldn?t get any offense going in Wednesday?s 5-2 setback to the Rangers. The D-backs plated five or more runs in eight of the first nine games, but have been limited to two runs or less in two of the past three contests.

Zack Godley (1-1, 6.55 ERA) makes his third start of the season for Arizona, as he rebounded from an awful outing against the Dodgers on March 30 in which he allowed eight runs in 5.1 innings to beat the Red Sox his last time out. In last Friday?s start against Boston, Godley settled down and yielded three hits and one run in 5.2 innings of a 15-8 victory as a +120 home underdog. Arizona won three of Godley?s five starts against San Diego last season, but the only home loss came as a -215 favorite in a 6-2 defeat last September.

Pedro Avila makes his Major League debut for the Padres following one start in Double-A. The 22-year old right-hander faces an Arizona squad that has won three consecutive series openers, while San Diego owns a 3-1 record in Game 1?s of a series. The last time these NL West rivals met up at Petco Park earlier this month, the D-backs grabbed the first two meetings before the Padres captured the series finale, 4-1 to avoid the sweep.

Blue Jays at Red Sox ? 7:10 PM EST

The defending champion Red Sox (3-9) are looking up at the rest of the AL East only 12 games in as Boston dropped its home opener on Wednesday to Toronto, 7-5. The Sox struggled on their opening road trip of the season by losing two of three each at Seattle, Oakland, and Arizona. Ace Chris Sale fell to 0-3 after allowing five earned runs in four innings of work against the Blue Jays as the southpaw suffered only four losses in 27 starts last season.

Toronto (4-8) snapped a four-game skid after getting swept at Cleveland with Wednesday?s victory, as the Blue Jays scored more runs yesterday (7) than they did in four losses to the Indians (6). It was the first series opening win for the Blue Jays this season, while cashing their biggest ticket at +230.

Nathan Eovaldi (0-0, 8.10 ERA) has picked up a pair of no-decisions in two starts this season, although the Red Sox are 2-0 in those games. Eovaldi lasted five innings against Seattle and Oakland, but the Red Sox hit the go-ahead home run in the ninth against the Mariners, while scoring three runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 3-3 tie against the Athletics. The veteran right-hander did not start against Toronto last season, while the Red Sox were 3-2 in his five starts at Fenway Park.

Aaron Sanchez (1-1, 1.64 ERA) was masterful in his season debut against Detroit by tossing five scoreless innings in a 3-0 win, but suffered a 4-1 setback at Cleveland his last time out in spite yielding two runs in six innings of work as a +185 underdog. The Blue Jays lost three of Sanchez?s four starts against the Red Sox in 2018, but his best start came last September when he gave up three hits and one earned run in seven innings of a 1-0 defeat as a +250 underdog.

Mets at Braves ? 7:20 PM EST

Three teams sit atop the NL East at 7-4 heading into Thursday?s action. One of those clubs is Philadelphia, who is off following back-to-back losses to Washington. New York and Atlanta each own 7-4 records heading into the start of a four-game series at SunTrust Park as the Braves picked up an extra off day following inclement weather wiping out Wednesday?s contest at Colorado.

The Braves slumped to an 0-3 start after getting swept at Philadelphia, but Atlanta has roared back by winning seven of its past eight games. Atlanta took all three games from Chicago in its opening home series, followed by capturing two of three from Miami. The Braves won both games at Colorado prior to Wednesday?s postponement as Atlanta plated 15 runs, including a pair of home runs from 2018 Rookie of the Year Ronald Acuna, Jr.

The Mets have scored 26 runs the last three games, including holding off the Twins on Wednesday, 9-6. Minnesota outlasted New York in the interleague series opener on Tuesday, 14-8 to hand Jacob deGrom his first loss of the season, but the Mets crossed home plate six times in the fifth inning last night thanks to seven consecutive batters reaching on a walk (including a hit by pitch).

Kevin Gausman (1-0, 0.00 ERA) was pushed back after his scheduled start on Wednesday as the Braves? right-hander posted a gem in his first outing against the Marlins last Friday. Gausman allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings of a 4-0 victory over Miami, as the former LSU standout lost to the Mets in his Atlanta debut in August 2018 by giving up three runs in five innings of a 3-0 road defeat.

The Mets counter with southpaw Steven Matz (0-0, 0.87 ERA), who didn?t allow a run in five innings against the Nationals his last time out. New York rallied for three late runs to beat Washington, 6-5, as Matz amazingly received his eighth consecutive no-decision dating back to last September. The Mets won seven starts by Matz last season in the road underdog role, but New York fell at Atlanta, 7-6 last May with the southpaw on the hill as a +125 ?dog.

M's now 13-2 after topping Royals in 10; Cards sweep Dodgers
April 11, 2019
By The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Seattle became the first major league team to homer in each of its first 15 games when Dee Gordon connected in the sixth inning, then beat the Kansas City Royals 7-6 Thursday behind Daniel Vogelbach's home run in the 10th inning.

Seattle improved the best record in the major leagues to 13-2, completing a four-game sweep and extending its winning streak to six. The Mariners became just the third team since 1987 to open with at least 13 wins in the first 15 games after Milwaukee (14-1 in 1987) and Boston (13-2 last year).

Kansas City has lost 10 straight games, has the poorest record in the big leagues at 2-10 and is off to its worst 12-game start since 2006. The Royals failed to preserve leads of 4-0 in the sixth and 6-4 with two outs in the ninth.

Kansas City's Whit Merrifield had his hitting streak end at 31 games. Merrifield went 0 for 6. He had not gone hitless since Sept. 9.

Royals center fielder Billy Hamilton was carted off with a knee injury after failing to grab Mitch Haniger's tying, two-run triple in the ninth. Royals manager Ned Yost said he did not have an update on Hamilton's condition.

The 2002 Cleveland Indians had homered in each of their first 14 games. Seattle's 36 home runs are tied with the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals for the most in a club's first 15 games. The Mariners have scored five or more runs in all but one game.

Vogelbach hit a 427-foot drive off Glenn Sparkman (0-1) for his sixth home run this season.

Brandon Brennan (1-0) struck out three in the ninth, working around his own throwing error on a grounder to get his first big league win. Brennan has not allowed a run in his first 9 2/3 innings in the major leagues, holding batters to a .156 average (5 for 32).

Connor Sadzeck pitched a perfect 10th for his first professional save.

CARDINALS 11, DODGERS 7

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Matt Wieters drove in a three runs and stole a base for just the third time in six years, leading St. Louis over Los Angeles for a four-game sweep of the NL champions.

Making his first start this season, the 32-year-old Wieters hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning and a two-run double in the fifth that put the Cardinals ahead 8-7. With runners at the corners in the fifth, Wieters stole second as Matt Carpenter struck out, his first steal since April 27, 2017, and just the ninth of his major league career.

St. Louis' bullpen combined for 5 1/3 scoreless innings in the series finale and allowed one run in the four games.

Harrison Bader was hit by pitches with the bases loaded in both the second and fifth innings. He was the first player to force in runs twice in a game while getting hit since Toronto's Reed Johnson on April 16, 2005, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Jose Martinez matched a career high with four hits, including an RBI double off Yimi Garcia in a two-run sixth. St. Louis set a season high for runs and swept the Dodgers in a four-game series for the first time since July 15-18, 2010.

David Freese and Walker Buehler hit solo home runs in the second inning for Los Angeles, and Kike Hernandez homered to cap a four-run third.

Giovanny Gallegos (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in his first appearance of the season for the Cardinals to win in relief of Michael Wacha, who allowed seven runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. It was the first Major League win for Gallegos in 23 appearances.

Pedro Baez (0-1) gave up four runs - three earned - and four hits in one inning.

ATHLETICS 8, ORIOLES 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Oakland's Khris Davis hit a pair of home runs for the second straight game, and Baltimore's Chris Davis extended his record hitless streak to 53 at-bats in the Athletics' victory.

Josh Phegley, Kendrys Morales and Marcus Semien also homered for the A's, who won three straight after losing the series opener. Khris Davis leads the majors with nine homers this season.

Chris Davis was 0 for 3 with a walk. In the fourth season of a $161 million, seven-year contract, he is 0 for 32 this season and hasn't gotten a hit since Sept. 14, setting the mark for most consecutive hitless at-bats by a non-pitcher.

Aaron Brooks (2-1) started against Baltimore for the first time in his career and allowed three runs, three hits and three walks in six innings. Blake Treinen pitched a perfect ninth with a pair of strikeouts for his fourth save.

Dylan Bundy (0-1) gave up six runs and seven hits in five-plus innings with eight strikeouts. and he tied a career-high by allowing four homers. The Orioles have given up at least one home run in all 13 games this year.

REDS 5, MARLINS 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Yasiel Puig returned from a two-game suspension and doubled home a pair of runs, and Cincinnati completed a reinvigorating three-game sweep of Miami.

The Reds entered the series with eight straight losses and the worst record in the NL. They came away with their first three-game sweep of the Marlins at Great American Ball Park since 2010.

Puig had most of the 11,192 fans chanting his name after he ran into the outfield wall unsuccessfully trying to grab a foul in the first inning, and again in the fifth when his double off Pablo Lopez (1-2) put the Reds up 4-0. He also got his first stolen base.

Puig missed the first two games of the series as punishment for his role in an on-field confrontation with the Pirates at PNC Park on Sunday.

Eugenio Suarez had three hits, including a solo homer, as the Reds got the better of a matchup two of the NL's worst offenses. The Marlins have scored the fewest runs in the league (34). The Reds came in with the worst batting average (.194) despite a 14-0 win in the second game of the series.

Robert Stephenson (1-0) got the victory in relief of starter Sonny Gray, who finally got a run but still couldn't get a win because of an injury.

INDIANS 4, TIGERS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Shane Bieber allowed three hits in seven innings, Leonys Martin homered in his return to Detroit and Cleveland shut out the Tigers.

Bieber (1-0) struck out six with one walk, improving to 8-0 on the road in his young career. Cleveland has won six of seven after taking two of three in this series.

Martin, traded from the Tigers to Cleveland last year, hit a solo homer in the third. He and Carlos Santana had three hits apiece for the Indians.

Spencer Turnbull (0-2) allowed three runs in four innings.

Turnbull struck out the game's first two hitters before Jake Bauers singled, stole second and scored on Santana's single. Martin made it 2-0 with his homer, then added an RBI single in the fourth.

BOSTON (AP) - Rafael Devers hit an RBI single with one out in the ninth inning and struggling Boston beat Toronto for its first home victory of the season.

Devers had his first career walk-off RBI.

Marcus Walden pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second victory of the season.

The loss went to Ken Giles (0-1), who gave up two runs, two hits and walked three in the ninth, ending his streak of 34 consecutive converted save opportunities dating to Sept. 12, 2017. It was the longest active streak in the majors.

Mitch Moreland homered in the seventh inning for Boston and added a one-out double in the ninth that scored Mookie Betts.

Freddy Galvis, Justin Smoak and Rowdy Tellez homered for Toronto.

METS 6, BRAVES 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Amed Rosario drove in a career-high four runs, rookie Pete Alonso rocketed his latest homer into a terrace fountain far beyond the center field fence as New York beat Atlanta.

Steven Matz (1-0) pitched six innings and snapped the longest streak of no-decisions in Mets history. He had gone eight straight starts without a decision, a streak that began Sept. 1. He allowed two runs and four hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Rosario hit an early three-run homer and New York ended Atlanta's three-game winning streak in the opener of a four-game series.

Alonso hit a two-run homer in the seventh off reliever Jonny Venters, a 454-foot laser with a 118 mph exit velocity that wound up floating in the water beyond straightaway center. The only players to hit a ball harder since the inception of Statcast are Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge and Mike Trout.

Ronald Acuna Jr. homered off New York reliever Luis Avilan in the eighth, his fifth homer sailing 462 feet over the left field wall and into the second level of stands.

Gausman (1-1) allowed four runs, three walks and struck out five.

CUBS 2, PIRATES 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Jose Quintana struck out 11 in seven innings of four-hit ball and Chicago blanked Pittsburgh.

Daniel Descalso and Victor Caratini each had two hits and an RBI in a game that was delayed 69 minutes by rain before the eighth.

Quintana (1-1) bounced back after being roughed up for eight runs and eight hits in three innings against Milwaukee in his first start of the season last Friday. It was the longest outing by a Chicago starter this season.

Steve Cishek pitched the eighth and Pedro Strop got three outs for his first save. The Cubs took two of three in their first home series after opening with a 2-7 road trip.

Pirates starter Joe Musgrove (1-1) allowed two unearned runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry, talking about the Anthony Davis/Lakers situation

Friday?s quiz
Which major league ballpark has a swimming pool behind the fence in right-center field?

Thursday?s quiz
Last time a Canadian franchise won the Stanley Cup was when Montreal won in 1993.

Wednesday?s quiz
Mike D?Antoni was the Lakers? coach the last time they made the playoffs, in 2013.

***************************

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??

13) Baseball season is only 15 days old, and San Diego Padres have already had three starting pitchers (Paddack, Margevicius, Avila) make their major league debuts. None of the three ever pitched at the AAA level, which is very unusual- the three combined to make only eight starts at the AA level, which is revolutionary thinking.

12) Teams/players have exit interviews after each season; if HBO wants to do a good reality show along the lines of Hard Knocks, these interviews would be fun to watch.

No matter what team it is, there are always unhappy players at the end of a season; some of these teams don?t have many happy players. Must be some interesting conversation going on, moreso in basketball/baseball, teams with smaller rosters.

11) I mean, Sacramento Kings just finished a 39-43 season, their best season in 13 years, yet they fired their coach. How do you think that exit interview went?

Lot of politics in NBA coaching circles; the coach tried to win games, people in the front office wanted him to play the younger players more, which would?ve resulted in fewer wins, but maybe more longterm success if the younger players developed faster.

Maybe there?s a reason Sacramento hasn?t had a winning season in over a decade.

10) Southern Miss recently hired a new athletic director, and Thursday basketball coach Doc Sadler quit, probably to become an assistant to Fred Hoiberg at Nebraska.

Sadler was at USM for five years, re-buillding a program that was ravaged by NCAA sanctions. Golden Eagles went 20-13 this year, their best season under Sadler- they started three seniors, so the new coach will have some recruiting to do.

Whats slightly odd is that Sadler was Nebraska?s head coach from 2006-12, when the Huskers moved from the Big X to the Big 14. He was making $360,000 at Southern Miss, will take a pay cut to become an assistant, but probably not a big one.

Just catches your attention when a pretty good head coach quits to become an assistant.

9) If I ran major league baseball, I?d end all blackout policies, would let people use all the highlights from major/minor league games. In short, I?d give the game maximum exposure so that the casual fan/non-fans can see how excellent it is and they?ll develop an interest.

Baseball does the opposite, and I?m guessing there is a financial reason why, but over the long haul, getting younger people invested in the game seems like a smarter business plan.

8) Not really sure why, but ESPN doesn?t have Baseball Tonight anymore, but they have an hour-long NBA show during the day year-round. Baseball needs more exposure.

7) Coaching contract:
? Nevada signed Steve Alford to replace Eric Musselman as coach.

6) Every returning Nevada player has entered the transfer portal, except for two guys who transferred there last year, and aren?t eligible until 2nd semester next season. Alford is going to have to do quick work re-recruiting the returnees, or he?ll have to recruit a whole new team.

Similar thing at LSU, where five players have declared for the NBA Draft; if they fire Will Wade, and it seems likely they will, the new coach is going to be handed a depleted roster.

5) In the bottom of the 5th inning Wednesday night, Mets had seven consecutive batters reach base against Minnesota, without ever hitting a fair ball- six walks and a hit batter, against three different pitchers. All in all, Mets scored six runs in the inning, with two singles.

4) Cubs? pitcher Jon Lester started his big league career 0-66 at the plate, but since then he?s hit .130 (27-207) to raise his career batting average to .099.

3) Patrick Reed shot a 73 at The Masters Thursday; each of the last eight rounds at The Masters by that year?s defending champ have been over par.

2) Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 6? Last season, Nathan Eovaldi allowed 14 homers in 111 IP. He?s allowed six homers this season in 15 IP. Boston scored twice in 9th for the comeback win; both teams are now 4-9 this season.

1) On February 12, 2016, Milwaukee traded Khris Davis to the A?s, for Jacob Nottingham and Bubba Derby.

Since that trade, Davis has homered 142 times for Oakland. Nottingham is 4-20 in nine major league games, Derby has a 4.16 ERA in 103 minor league games. Pretty good trade for the A?s.
