Ohtani hits 1st homer of season, Angels beat Twins 5-4
May 13, 2019
By The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Shohei Ohtani hit his first home run of the season for the Los Angeles Angels, a towering two-run shot in the third inning against Minnesota ace Jose Berrios that fueled a 5-4 victory over the Twins on Monday night.

Ohtani, who made his 2019 debut last week in his return from Tommy John elbow surgery, reached base on four of his five plate appearances. His 429-foot drive off the videoboard facade beneath the second deck in left-center field was the highlight of a three-run, five-hit third inning. The AL Rookie of the Year went deep 22 times in 326 at-bats in 2018.

Tommy La Stella hit the go-ahead homer against Berrios (6-2) in the sixth, his team-leading 10th long ball of the season in 36 games.

Jorge Polanco and Marwin Gonzalez each hit two-run homers off Angels starter Tyler Skaggs (4-3), but the Twins weren't able to overcome this uncharacteristic vulnerability by their All-Star right-hander. Berrios allowed five runs and a career-high 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings, his shortest start of the year, while walking three.

The Angels improved to 5-2 on their current road trip, striking first against a Twins team that took the best record in baseball into the evening.

WHITE SOX 5, INDIANS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Yoan Moncada hit two of Chicago's four solo homers and Reynaldo Lopez pitched 7 2/3 effective innings in a win over Cleveland.

Jose Abreu and Welington Castillo also connected for Chicago, which earned its third straight win. The White Sox improved to 4-3 against the Indians this season after they went 5-14 against the Tribe last year.

Lopez (3-4) allowed one earned run and two hits, struck out six and walked two. It was the right-hander's first win since he fanned 14 in a 4-1 victory over Detroit on April 28.

Francisco Lindor hit his 13th career leadoff homer for Cleveland, which lost for the third time in four games. Lindor also hit a sacrifice fly in the third, singled in the sixth and walked in the eighth, but that was pretty much it for the light-hitting Indians.

Shane Bieber (2-2) allowed five runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings in the first road loss of his career.

ASTROS 8, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Aledmys Diaz, Robinson Chirinos, Jake Marisnick and Alex Bregman homered for Houston, which extended its winning streak to six games with the win over Detroit.

Brad Peacock (4-2) allowed a run and three hits in five innings for Houston, which has won nine of its last 10 games. The AL West-leading Astros knocked Matthew Boyd (4-3) out of the game in four innings, the shortest start of the season for the Detroit lefty. He allowed three runs and five hits and threw 96 pitches.

Houston got homers from its No. 6, 8 and 9 hitters before Bregman added his 13th of the year. The Astros scored three runs in a three-batter span in the second inning, then added two more in the seventh and three in the ninth.

Grayson Greiner hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth for the Tigers.

PHILLIES 7, BREWERS 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - J.T. Realmuto doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, Cesar Hernandez hit a two-run homer and Philadelphia beat Milwaukee.

Lorenzo Cain had a career-high five hits and Mike Moustakas homered for Milwaukee.

Bryce Harper struck out three times and was hitless in four at-bats. He made a diving catch with two outs, the bases loaded and scored tied in the seventh.

The NL East-leading Phillies rallied in the bottom half. Jean Segura struck out swinging but reached on a wild pitch by Matt Albers (2-2). Junior Guerra struck out Rhys Hoskins. Realmuto ripped a double to left-center to score Segura for a 5-4 lead. After Hernandez walked, Odubel Herrera extended the lead to 7-4 with a two-run double.

Phillies ace Aaron Nola lasted only three innings, giving up three runs and five hits on a cold night following a 52-minute rain delay at the start. Adam Morgan (2-1) got four outs for the win and Pat Neshek finished for his second save.

Brewers starter Freddy Peralta allowed two runs - one earned - and seven hits in four innings, striking out five.

DIAMONDBACKS 9, PIRATES 3

PHOENIX (AP) - Eduardo Escobar homered, tripled and drove in three runs, Christian Walker also went deep and Arizona cruised past Pittsburgh.

Robbie Ray (3-1) allowed one earned run and six hits over five innings. He recorded his 800th career strikeout when he fanned Pirates pitcher Nick Kingham (1-1) to end the top of the fourth inning.

David Peralta had two hits and drove in two runs. Alex Avila reached base four times and drove in a run as Arizona ended a three-game losing streak.

In his second start after opening the season in the bullpen, Kingham (1-1) gave up seven runs and 10 hits in four innings.

Josh Bell, Bryan Reynolds and Melky Cabrera drove in a run each for the Pirates, whose three-game winning streak was stopped.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

Commencement speakers at colleges around the country this month:

? Cornell? Bill Nye, the science guy

? Florida? James Patterson, author

? Maryland, MIT, Washington U? Michael Bloomberg

? NC-Greensboro? Ken Jeong, actor

? Stanford, Tulane? Tim Cook, Apple CEO

? Wisconsin? JJ Watt

Quote of the Day
?Listen, I have so many things to worry about. I?m trying to go out there and play good football. I?m trying to go out there and play the best football of my life. As far as a time constraint and all of that stuff, I?m not worried about developing guys or any of that. That is what it is. I hope he does it well. I don?t look at that as my job. My job is to go win football games for this football team.?
Joe Flacco, now with the Denver Broncos

Tuesday?s quiz
Milwaukee Brewers started play in 1970, after they had played in 1969 as an expansion team in Seattle. What was the Seattle team?s nickname?

Monday?s quiz
In the 2001 movie Spy Game, with Robert Redford/Brad Pitt, Brad Pitt wears a San Diego Padres? cap in several scenes.

Sunday?s quiz
Jaclyn Smith was on the Charlie?s Angels TV show and also played Hodges? mother on CSI.

***************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) John Beilein signed a 5-year deal to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers:
? Beilein is 66, so worst case scenario for him, he fattens his retirement fund.
? Beilein is one of 28 coaches in NCAA history (all divisions) with at 750+ career wins (754-425); he will be the first of those 28 to coach in the NBA.
? Beilein?s last losing season was 2009-10 (15-17) at Michigan. He is a very good coach, but the NBA is more about players than coaches.
? This figures to set off a domino effect of other coaching changes.
? What %age of college coaches have the itch to try the NBA?

12) Kawhi Leonard took 39 of Toronto?s 89 shots in Game 7 Sunday; rest of the team was 18-50 (36%) from the floor, and they still won.

Don?t see lot of NBA games where one team used only two subs, the other one three subs. 76ers? subs played total of only 27:00 Sunday.

11) Brett Brown will return as the 76ers? coach next year; not even sure why this would be an issue, but apparently it was. Who could they hire that would be better?

10) Justin Thomas (wrist) withdrew from this week?s PGA Championship Monday.

9) Former Seattle Seahawks punter Jon Ryan is returning to his hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan to punt for the CFL?s Roughriders this summer.

8) PG recruit Boogie Ellis switched his commitment from Duke to Memphis, as Penny Hardaway establishes himself as one of the best recruiters in the country.

7) Baseball stuff:
? A?s activated Mark Canha, DFA?d 1B/DH Kendrys Morales
? Bronx put P Jonathan Loaisiga (shoulder), 3B Miguel Andujar on IL
? Detroit put P Tyson Ross on IL.
? White Sox P Carlos Rodon needs Tommy John surgery, is out for the year.

6) First-round matchups for the Paradise Jam tournament in November:
? Valparaiso-Grand Canyon
? Fordham-Nevada
? Illinois State-Cincinnati
? Bowling Green-Western Kentucky

5) On Sept. 28, 1974, Nolan Ryan threw a no-hitter against the Twins, walking eight and striking out 15- he threw 158 pitches that night. Safe to say you won?t see that happen anytime in the next 10-20 years, at least.

4) David Letterman is going to be a guest on the Sunday Today show this week; he has this thick gray beard now and looks like he should be on Duck Dynasty instead of the Today Show.

3) College basketball transfer portal:
? Pitt grad transfer Malik Ellison bolts to Hartford.

2) St Louis 4, San Jose 2? Western Conference finals are tied 1-1.

1) Get well to former President Jimmy Carter, who had surgery for a broken hip today after he fell while leaving his house to go turkey hunting. Mr Carter is 94 years old.

LEADING OFF: Yanks put Andújar on IL, Paddack vs Kershaw
May 13, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

BRONX BOO-BOOS

No sooner do the injury-ravaged Yankees finally get a player back than two more go down. On the same day New York activated center fielder Aaron Hicks for the first time this season, third baseman Miguel Andujar and right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga were placed on the 10-day injured list. The moves Monday left the Yankees with 13 players on the IL. They've put 17 on the list for 18 total stints this year - Andujar now twice because of a small labrum tear in his right shoulder. Loaisiga, the rotation replacement for injured James Paxton, has a strained rotator cuff and will be shut down for four weeks. Following a rainout Monday, J.A. Happ (2-3, 4.36) leads New York against Baltimore.

TEXAS TWO-STEP

Padres rookie and cowboy-hat enthusiast Chris Paddack takes on another notable Texan in a matchup with Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw. Paddack (3-1, 1.55) has become a fan favorite in San Diego for his Western get-ups, wearing cowboy hats and boots to the stadium on game day. He's coming off his best start yet, striking out 11 over 7 2/3 innings in a 4-0 win over Jacob deGrom and the Mets. Los Angeles has won every game started by Kershaw (2-0, 3.31) this season.

QUICK WORK

Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks has been on a most efficient roll, something he'll try to continue against Cincinnati. He delivered an 81-pitch shutout against St. Louis on May 3, then followed with eight solid innings against Miami, allowing an unearned run while throwing 96 pitches. The Reds will counter with righty Tanner Roark (3-1, 3.27).

PETEY ON HOLD

Dustin Pedroia's injury rehab assignment has been put on hold following a setback with his lingering left knee injury. The Red Sox second baseman was scratched from a game with Double-A Portland on Saturday, and his return from the rehab assignment was announced Monday. Boston hasn't announced a next move for the 35-year-old.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Caleb Smith, Miami Marlins (3-0, 2.11 ERA, $237):
Smith has been a revelation for the Marlins so far this season. The lefty has pitched to a 2.11 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .236 on base percentage. Smith has also recorded a quality start in his six previous outings. He?ll look to keep that going when the Marlins host the in-state rival Rays. Miami is currently a +115 home dog with a total of 6.5.

SLUMPING

Joe Musgrove, Pittsburgh Pirates (1-4, 4.20 ERA, $-355):
Things have turned sour for Musgrove after a sweet start to the season. The Buccos right-hander has surrendered 13 earned runs on 12 hits and seven walks over his last two starts, in which he lasted a combined 5.2 innings. Musgrove will look to bounce back when the Pirates continue their series in Arizona tonight. Pittsburgh is currently a +133 road dog with a total of 9.

3 STRIKES

HAS THOR LOST HIS HAMMER?

Noah Syndergaard and the Mets take on Jeremy Hellickson and the Nationals in Washington. The Under has cashed in nine of the Mets last 11 games and nine of Washington's previous 13 contests, but Syndergaard and Hellickson might not be the pitchers to continue that trend.

Thor has been wildly inconsistent this season going 2-3 with a 5.14 ERA and .279 BAA. Over the last three years Syndergaard has gone 0-3 in four starts at Nationals Park with an ERA of 6.87 and BAA of .289. Hellickson has a 5.52 ERA and .287 BAA in six games started in 2019.

The Mets are 5-1 to the Over in Syndergaard's last six starts, while the Nats are an identical 5-1 to the Over in Hellickson's previous six.

PITCHERS TRENDING IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS

The Pirates will start Joe Musgrove for tonight's game against Arizona. Musgrove pitched very well to start off the season but has been shelled for 13 runs in 5 2-3 innings over his last two starts.

Luke Weaver gets the nod for the D-Backs and has trended in the opposite direction, giving up seven runs in the first 9 1-3 innings he pitched this season but holding opponents to just six runs over 29 2-3 innings in his last five starts.

Pittsburgh is 3-13 in its last nine games against Arizona and Musgrove could be roughed up against a Diamondbacks lineup that ranks third in the majors in batting average at .261 and fourth in slugging at .460.

UMPIRE AS THE X-FACTOR

The O/U for the game between Houston and Detroit opened at 9.5 but was bet up to 10.5. One fact to consider though is that Mike Estabrook is expected to be behind homeplate for the matchup. Games which Estabrook has umpired have gone 4-1 to the Under this season and he has called strikes on 64.4 percent of pitches he has seen.

Rockies rally past Red Sox 5-4, spoil Sale's 17 K effort
May 14, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Red Sox ace Chris Sale struck out a career-high 17 in just seven innings before getting pulled after 108 pitches on a chilly Tuesday night, and the Colorado Rockies rallied against Boston's bullpen to win 5-4 in the 11th.

Sale became the first pitcher in major league history to fan 17 in a start of no more than seven innings. Boston pitchers combined to strike out 24, but the Red Sox had their five-game winning streak stopped.

Mark Reynolds, whose fifth-inning double was the first runner allowed by Sale, drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the 11th off Ryan Brasier (2-2).

Sale struck out the first six batters and fanned eight through three innings. He topped his previous best of 15 strikeouts, which he had done three times. The All-Star lefty had a shutout through six innings. Nolan Arenado's two-run homer in the seventh was one of only three hits managed by the Rockies against Sale.

Mike Dunn (1-0) got the win with one inning of scoreless relief and Wade Davis got his seventh save.

Charlie Blackmon also homered for the Rockies. Michael Chavis, J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers homered for Boston.

Kyle Freeland got the start for Colorado on his 26th birthday and went six innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out seven and walking three.

TWINS 4, ANGELS 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Mitch Garver hit a two-run homer and tagged out Shohei Ohtani trying to score the tying run in the eighth inning before leaving with an injury, helping Minnesota hold off Los Angeles.

Garver hit his ninth homer in the third to give Minnesota a three-run lead behind Kyle Gibson (4-1). Byron Buxton added an RBI double the next inning, and five relievers combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings, with Blake Parker getting his seventh save in seven chances.

Ohtani had three hits, including an RBI single as part of a three-run sixth, but he was thrown out at third base in the sixth and at home in the eighth after Brian Goodwin's single to center.

The Twins lead the majors with 16 home runs and 38 RBIs from the catching position, also getting strong contributions from Castro and Willians Astudillo.

Cam Bedrosian (1-2) took the loss for Los Angeles, serving as the opener for primary pitcher Felix Pena. Bedrosian gave up one run and two hits in one inning.

Gibson cruised through five innings before running into trouble in the sixth. He allowed three runs, six hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings.

CARDINALS 14, BRAVES 3

ATLANTA (AP) - St. Louis hit four home runs, including three-run shots by Marcell Ozuna, Yadier Molina and Kolten Wong, and beat struggling right-hander Mike Foltynewicz and Atlanta.

Jack Flaherty (4-3) did not allow a hit through four innings. St. Louis led 11-0 before Flaherty gave up three runs and three hits in the fifth.

The 2019 struggles for Foltynewicz (0-3) continued. He gave up eight runs, matching his career high, while lasting only 4 2/3 innings.

Foltynewicz, a 2018 All-Star, saw his ERA climb to 8.02 in four starts. He began the season on the injured list with a bone spur in his right elbow.

Atlanta's first hit off Flaherty in the fifth was Brian McCann's broken-bat dribbler against the defensive shift toward an abandoned third base. McCann scored on pinch-hitter Charlie Culberson's single to left. Ronald Acuna Jr. drew a bases-loaded walk off Flaherty to force in a run.

St. Louis outhit the Braves 14-3. Every Cardinals starter, including Flaherty, had at least one hit.

METS 6, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Wilson Ramos hit a first-inning grand slam after Washington failed to complete what should have been a routine double play, Noah Syndergaard took a no-hitter into the sixth, and New York beat the slumping Nationals.

The Mets have won three games in a row. The Nationals lost for the 11th time in 15 games.

Syndergaard (3-3) allowed two runs and four hits in eight innings. The first hit he allowed was a single to right by Wilmer Difo to open the sixth, and Victor Robles followed with a homer off a 98 mph fastball.

Ramos, who used to play for the Nationals, connected with a low 80 mph offering from Jeremy Hellickson (2-2) and sent it out to left for his second homer.

Hellickson went five-plus innings, charged with five runs and six hits.

Dominic Smith, pinch-hitting for Syndergaard in the ninth, hit his first homer of the year.

ASTROS 11, TIGERS 4

DETROIT (AP) - Carlos Correa started another Houston onslaught with a three-run homer in the first inning, and the Astros routed Detroit and extended their winning streak to seven games.

The Astros, who have won 10 of 11, scored in each of the first six innings against a depleted Detroit pitching staff. George Springer hit an inside-the-park homer in the fifth, and Aledmys Diaz went deep in the third for Houston.

Wade Miley (4-2) allowed four runs in six innings for the Astros. Houston led 7-0 after its half of the third.

Ronny Rodriguez homered for Detroit. Ryan Carpenter (0-2) made his second start of the season and allowed seven earned runs in four innings.

Springer circled the bases in the fifth when his drive to right-center field bounced off the wall and past center fielder JaCoby Jones. It was the first inside-the-park home run of his career, and Houston led 9-2.

The Astros have scored 45 runs in their last four games.

RAYS 4, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Charlie Morton pitched six strong innings and Avisail Garcia homered and drove in three runs in Tampa Bay's win over Miami.

Morton (4-0) gave up three hits and struck out five while throwing 82 pitches before he was pulled for a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh inning.

Garcia had a solo homer and two RBI singles for the Rays in the opener of the two-game series against their cross-state interleague rivals. Garcia finished the scoring with an infield single with the bases loaded in the ninth.

Miami starter Caleb Smith (3-1) didn't last past the sixth inning for the first time since his opening start on April 1. He allowed two runs and four hits, while striking out eight and walking two in 5 1/3 innings. The Marlins lost their sixth straight and ninth in the last 10.

Relievers Emilio Pagan, Diego Castillo and Chaz Roe pitched the final three innings for Tampa Bay.

BREWERS 6, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Brandon Woodruff threw one-hit ball for six innings, Yasmani Grandal and Ryan Braun homered and Milwaukee topped Philadelphia.

The Phillies survived a scare when Bryce Harper made a sliding catch on a foul ball to right field and banged his left knee into the wall in the sixth. Harper came up limping but remained in the game and made an almost identical catch to end the inning. He received a standing ovation only to get booed after striking out again in the eighth.

Woodruff (6-1) allowed only an infield single to Jean Segura in the first, walked five and struck out five.

Philadelphia's Jerad Eickhoff (2-2) gave up five runs and eight hits in four innings.

Segura's RBI single off Corbin Burnes in the eighth knocked in Philadelphia's only run.

CUBS 3, REDS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Kyle Hendricks had three hits, including a two-run double, and pitched into the ninth inning as Chicago beat Cincinnati.

The Cubs are 10-2 in May, their best start to the month since 1977. Chicago has won 22 of 28 games for the NL's best record at 25-14.

Hendricks (3-4) gave up a pair of singles and Joey Votto's homer in the fourth inning, but those were Cincinnati's only hits. He left after walking Nick Senzel to open the ninth. Steve Cishek got the last two outs for his third save in four chances.

Willson Contreras had a sacrifice fly off Tanner Roark (3-2) for Chicago's other run. Kris Bryant had three hits and extended his career-best streak to 23 consecutive games reaching base safely. Javier Baez singled twice and extended his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games, the longest by a Cub this season.

INDIANS 9, WHITE SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Jordan Luplow hit two of Cleveland's five homers and Carlos Carrasco cruised through seven innings in a rout of Chicago.

Roberto Perez, Jake Bauers and Jose Ramirez also went deep as the light-hitting Indians muscled up against Manny Banuelos and Josh Osich to end Chicago's three-game winning streak.

The 25-year-old Luplow has hit all four of his homers this season against Chicago and three off Banuelos.

Carrasco (4-3) scattered six singles and struck out six, while walking none, in his second straight solid start. Oliver Perez, Dan Otero and A.J. Cole combined to complete the seven-hitter.

Banuelos (2-3) yielded five runs on four hits and three walks before leaving the game with none out in the fifth with left shoulder soreness.

PIRATES 6, DIAMONDBACKS 2

PHOENIX (AP) - Josh Bell homered twice and Joe Musgrove allowed one hit through seven strong innings as Pittsburgh Pirates beat Arizona.

Phoenix native Cole Tucker hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to cap off the victory.

The Pirates snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Diamondbacks that dated to last season. Pittsburgh has won four of its last five.

Carson Kelly homered and Adam Jones drove in David Peralta to account for the Diamondbacks' runs.

The only hit Musgrove (2-4) allowed was a fourth-inning single to Eduardo Escobar. He struck out five and walked two.

Diamondbacks starter Luke Weaver (3-2) allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings. Arizona has lost four of five.

ROYALS 11, RANGERS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Hunter Dozier drove in three runs, top prospect Nicky Lopez had an RBI single in his big league debut, and Kansas City routed Texas.

Alex Gordon and Jorge Soler also drove in two runs apiece for the Royals, who scored nine times in the first two innings while quickly knocking Rangers starter Shelby Miller from the game.

Danny Duffy (2-1) was only marginally better for Kansas City, using 107 pitches just to survive five innings. He allowed four runs, seven hits and a walk while striking out seven.

Miller (1-3) was pulled with two outs in the second after allowing eight runs and seven hits with two walks.

Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus left with tightness in his right hamstring after grounding out to end the seventh inning. He will be evaluated again Wednesday.

Joey Gallo had a pair of RBIs for the Rangers, who stranded runners in four consecutive innings.

Quote of the Day
?Ohio State, that was my dream school. I was sick to my stomach. There was almost a point where I was like, ?I?m going to roll the dice anyway? because I wanted to be there. After being there for two years and not playing, I couldn?t risk it anymore. There?s a point where you love your teammates, you love everything about the school and the people there, but you have to start thinking about yourself and not doing it because these are my teammates. They all understood, and they weren?t upset at all.?
QB Tate Martell, on transferring from Ohio State to Miami

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings?..

13) New Orleans wins the draft lottery; does that mean Anthony Davis will want to stay with the Pelicans? Memphis got the #2 pick, Knicks #3, Lakers #4.

12) What would it be like if they did the lottery just before the start of the draft in June? Make people think on their feet.

6:30 lottery, draft starts at 7:00. Would be better than jamming it in before the start of a playoff game on the other side of the country.

11) Seeing Patrick Ewing at the lottery reminds me that I saw him watching Zion Williamson play at an adidas tournament in Las Vegas two summers ago. Tons of kids there; Ewing gets up to go to the concession stand, and not one kid asks him for an autograph or says anything to him. One of the 50 greatest players ever, 7-feet tall, and he got as much attention there as I did.

10) New Jersey took in $313.7M in bets in April, according to numbers released Tuesday by the state?s Department of Gaming Enforcement. 81% of those bets were made via a mobile betting app.

Meanwhile, across the river in New York State???nothing, zero, bupkis.

9) Warriors 116, Trailblazers 94? Lillard/McCollum combined to shoot 11-31 from the floor. Would be odd if Golden State swept its way to another title and Durant never came back to play.

8) Rockies 5, Red Sox 4 (11)? Colorado batters struck out 24 times in this game, while receiving only two walks. Home plate ump Dan Bellino didn?t win many friends in the Rockies? dugout.

Chris Sale struck out 17 but didn?t get the win; he is the first pitcher since Randy Johnson in 2001 to strike out 17+ and not win- Johnson had 20 strikeouts for Arizona that night.

Colorado is third team ever to strike out 24+ times and win; the other two:
June 2, 2018: Cubs beat the Mets (24 K in 14 innings)
June 8, 2004: Brewers beat the Angels (26 K in 17 innings)

7) Baseball stuff:
? Brewers put 3B Travis Shaw (wrist) on IL, promote 2B Keston Hiura.
? Dodgers? P Julio Urias was arrested Monday on suspicion of domestic battery.
? A?s traded Kendrys Morales to Bronx for cash or a player to be named later.

6) Four teams left in the Hard Knocks sweepstakes: Lions, Giants, Raiders, Redskins. You figure the Raiders are 2020?s team, with the move to Las Vegas and all, so they?re out, too.

5) The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum is about to become the Ring Central Coliseum; they signed a 3-year deal at $1M a year for naming rights.

4) College basketball transfer portal:
? PG Elijah Mitrou-Long bolts from Texas to UNLV.
? Justice Kithcart bolts from Old Dominion to Nicholls State.

3) If you don?t living in this country is an honor, keep this in mind: the S Sport TV station in Turkey will not televise the Blazers-Warriors playoff series because of Enes Kanter?s history of criticizing Turkey?s government. Kanter plays for Portland.

Living in a democracy is a good thing; we need to make sure it stays that way.

2) In a related story, if Portland-Toronto play in the NBA Finals, will Kanter go to the games in Toronto? Pretty sure Kanter skipped a regular season game in Toronto in March, fearing for his safety outside of America.

Kanter had his Turkish passport revoked in 2017 and has had a warrant out for his arrest in Turkey since January. Turkey also reportedly seeks an Interpol red notice for Kanter, which could result in him being detained and deported back to his home country.

1) RIP to the great comic Tim Conway, who passed away Tuesday at age 85. He was on McHale?s Navy and the Carol Burnett Show. just a really funny guy. RIP, sir.

LEADING OFF: Guerrero connects, Garver injured, Harper hurt
May 15, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

IN THE SWING

Rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. looks to build off his first huge game in the majors when the Blue Jays continue their series at San Francisco.

The highly touted 20-year-old hit the first two home runs of his major league career, becoming the youngest player in Toronto history to touch `em all. Guerrero's drives were estimated at 438 feet and 451 feet.

Two-sport star Danny Ainge had been the youngest Blue Jay to homer, in 1979 - Guerrero was younger by 18 days.

The son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero entered the day batting .191 with one RBI in 13 games. The family already had long-ball history at Oracle Park - the elder Guerrero won the 2007 Home Run Derby at the waterfront stadium.

TWISTED TWIN

The Twins are hoping for good news on breakout backstop Mitch Garver, who suffered a left high ankle sprain tagging out Shohei Ohtani trying to score the tying run in Minnesota's 4-3 win over the Angels on Tuesday night. Garver hit a two-run homer in the third inning, giving him nine this season to go with a .329 average and 19 RBIs. Garver, Jason Castro and Willians Astudillo have helped the club lead the majors with 16 homers and 38 RBIs from the catching position, a big reason Minnesota is 26-15 and leading the AL Central.

OUCH!

Phillies right fielder Bryce Harper will see how his left knee is feeling, a day after banging into a wall making a sliding catch on a foul ball at Citizens Bank Park.

Harper came up limping after the play in the sixth, but remained in the game. he made an almost identical catch to end the inning.

''It's a little sore,'' said Harper, who added he didn't know if he could play against the Brewers.

YOU AGAIN?

Nationals lefty Patrick Corbin already might be sick of facing the New York Mets.

When he makes the ninth start of his $140 million contract with Washington, it'll already be his third outing against the NL East rival Mets.

Corbin has a 3.75 ERA with 13 strikeouts, three walks and three homers allowed in his 12 innings against the Mets this season. He doesn't have a decision from either of those games; the teams split them.

Overall, Corbin is 3-1 with a 3.20 ERA for the Nationals so far. He'll be going up against Mets right-hander Wilmer Font (1-0, 5.50), who is making his second start of the season. The Mets acquired him from the Tampa Bay Rays on May 6.

NEW YORK NEWCOMER

Veteran slugger Kendrys Morales is on the move again, this time being traded to the injury-depleted Yankees with cash by Oakland for a player to be named or cash.

The A's got the 35-year-old first baseman/designated hitter from Toronto on March 27. The switch-hitter batted .204 with one homer and seven RBIs before being designated for assignment Monday.

The Yankees added Morales a day after putting Miguel Andujar back on the injured list with a small labrum tear in his right shoulder. New York has 13 players on the IL, and Andujar had been the Yankees' best remaining fit at designated hitter - he is deciding whether he needs surgery, which could end his season.

After two straight rainouts at Yankee Stadium, New York hosts Baltimore in a doubleheader.

Wednesday's Diamond Notes
May 14, 2019
By Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Astros (9-1 last 10)

Houston has topped the 100-win mark in each of the last two seasons and took home the AL West crown. The Astros are well on their way to the top of the division once again as they own the top record in baseball at 28-15 following their second straight blowout of the Tigers at Comerica Park. Houston ripped Detroit in Monday?s series opener, 8-1, then followed that rout with another victory by a decisive margin, 11-4 on Tuesday. The Astros have plated 45 runs in the last four games, while scoring at least six runs in nine of their past 11 victories.

Former Tigers? standout Justin Verlander looks to improve on a 6-1 record in his nine starts for Houston, while tossing seven innings of one-hit ball in a 3-0 shutout of Texas his last time out. Verlander has allowed one earned run or less in five of his past six trips to the mound, as the Astros seek their sixth consecutive win at Comerica Park since last season.

Coldest team: Rangers (3-9 last 12)

Texas has not been a team to back in series openers this season as the Rangers stumbled to 2-12 in Game 1?s after an 11-5 defeat at Kansas City. The Rangers have allowed at least 10 runs in each of their last three games, while falling to 5-15 away from Arlington this season. This marks the second five-game losing streak for Texas in 2019, but the Rangers are actually listed as a road favorite heading into Wednesday?s action with the Royals.

Mike Minor is winless in his last two appearances for Texas since striking out 13 batters in seven innings of a 15-1 rout of Seattle on April 27. In Minor?s past two starts, the Rangers have scored a grand total of two runs in losses to the Blue Jays and Astros, while Texas is 1-3 in his four road appearances. Last season, Minor defeated the Royals at home, 8-4, but allowed four earned runs in six innings of work.

Hottest pitcher: Gio Gonzalez, Brewers (1-0, 1.69 ERA)

Gonzalez ended last season with Milwaukee after getting traded by Washington, but the southpaw is back with the Brewers in spite of not starting 2019 with the organization. The veteran left-hander signed a minor-league deal with the Yankees in March, but never started with the big club as he opted out of his deal to re-sign with Milwaukee. It has worked out for both parties as Gonzalez has yielded three earned runs in three starts, while Milwaukee is 2-1 in his three outings. Gonzalez strung together seven scoreless innings against the Cubs last Friday in a 7-0 victory at Wrigley Field, but he is winless in his previous three trips to Philadelphia since 2017.

Coldest pitcher: Sonny Gray, Reds (0-4, 4.15 ERA)

Another pitcher that changed squads in the offseason expecting positive results hasn?t seen that return in 2019. Gray has started eight games for the Reds, but Cincinnati has won only two of those outings, while the right-hander doesn?t have a win to his credit. The Reds are 2-1 in Gray?s last three starts at Great American Ballpark as Cincinnati continues its series with Chicago. The Cubs topped the Reds in the opener, 3-1, marking the ninth win in the last 10 matchups with Cincinnati since last season.

Biggest OVER run: Red Sox (9-3 last 12)

Boston squandered a 3-0 lead and lost to Colorado on Tuesday, 5-4 in 11 innings despite the Rockies striking out 24 times. The game barely cashed the OVER of 8 ?, as the Red Sox offense couldn?t build off the 34-run output from the weekend sweep of the Mariners. Boston has now hit the OVER in six of the last seven games at Fenway Park, as the Sox send out left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez to the mound on Wednesday in the series finale against Colorado. Rodriguez has seen the OVER hit in seven of eight starts this season, including all four home outings.

Biggest UNDER run: Cubs (6-0 last six)

Chicago is right behind Houston for the best record in baseball entering Wednesday?s action at 25-14 after winning its 13th game in the last 15 tries in Tuesday?s 3-1 triumph at Cincinnati. The Cubs? pitching staff has stepped up following a rough start to the season as Chicago has allowed two runs or less in six of the past seven games. Since getting shut out by Milwaukee on Friday, 7-0, the Cubs have yielded three runs in the previous 33 innings, while not scoring more than four runs in any of the last six games. Yu Darvish takes the mound for the Cubs on Wednesday as the right-hander is 3-1 to the UNDER his past four starts, but two of those UNDERS came on totals above 10 as tonight?s total opened at 9.

Matchup to watch: Cardinals vs. Braves

Heading into Tuesday?s opener at SunTrust Park, St. Louis had lost three straight games, while Atlanta was flying high with three consecutive wins to wrap up its road trip. The Cardinals roughed up the Braves in the series opener, 14-3 as St. Louis went deep four times, including Marcell Ozuna knocking out a three-run shot to start the scoring in the first inning.

Atlanta slipped to 10-11 at home and 1-4 in the past five series openers at SunTrust Park. Mike Soroka has been impressive in five starts for the Braves this season by compiling a 1.21 ERA, while not allowing more than two runs in any outing. Soroka picked up a no-decision his last time out at Arizona as he tossed six innings and allowed four hits and one run, but the Braves lost in extra innings, 3-2. The right-hander has not received much run support as the Braves have scored three runs or fewer in four of his five starts.

The Cardinals picked up their first road victory since May 1, while snapped a four-game skid away from Busch Stadium. Michael Wacha has not been sharp this season for the Redbirds, but he is benefiting from a strong performance from the St. Louis lineup. The Cards are 4-1 in Wacha?s last five starts, thanks to six or more runs or support, including a 17-spot dropped by St. Louis in a 13-run rout of Pittsburgh last Thursday.

Betcha didn?t know: The Nationals are an absolute disaster right now, coming off Tuesday?s 6-2 home defeat to the Mets. Washington fell to 6-14 the last 20 games, but three of those wins have come with Patrick Corbin on the mound. The former Arizona southpaw gets the nod on Wednesday against New York for the third time this season as the Nationals won a 6-5 decision on March 31, followed by a 6-5 setback at Citi Field less than a week later.
