STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Miles Mikolas, St. Louis Cardinals (4-3, 3.83 ERA, $198):
The late-blooming Mikolas was a huge surprise for the Cardinals last season. So, it wasn?t that surprising to see him get off to a bit of a slow start this year, but he certainly has returned to his 2018 form lately. Over his past three starts Mikolas has pitched to a 1.35 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .205 on base percentage.

The Cards hope his start will break the team out of their current funk, having lost seven of their last nine. St. Louis is currently -138 road favorite tonight in Texas against the Rangers with a total of 11.5.

SLUMPING

Brad Keller, Kansas City Royals (2-4, 4.47 ERA, $-269):
The Royals sophomore starter has struggled after a nice start to the season. Keller has been touched up for a 7.06 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP while allowing opponents to get on base at a .402 clip over his last four starts. He and the Royals are +136 road dogs with a total of 9.5 as they visit the Angels tonight.

3 STRIKES

PICK'EM IN THE WINDY CITY

We've got a pick'em in Chicago with the White Sox hosting the Blue Jays. Jays starter Aaron Sanchez is 3-4 with a 3.75 ERA and 1.50 WHIP but has been rocked for 12 earned runs over 17 innings in his last three starts with a 1.82 WHIP. The White Sox will be starting Ivan Nova who has an awful 6.29 ERA and 1.65 WHIP this season but is coming off two straight wins where he allowed just two runs over 13 innings.

The Jays have the worst hitting lineup in the majors batting .216, while the White Sox are seventh with a BA of .255. Going up against poor pitchers doesn't seem to help the Jays since they're just 1-9 in their previous 10 games against starters with a WHIP greater 1.30. Toronto is 2-9 in their last 11 games overall and Chicago is 4-1 over their previous five.

UMPIRE GOING AGAINST THE TREND

Cleveland is hosting Baltimore as a -164 favorite with the total set at 9. The Orioles are 5-1-1 to the Under in their last seven games overall and 5-0 to the Under in Dylan Bundy's last five starts. The Tribe has cashed in on the Under in seven of their previous nine games and their last four games which Jefry Rodriguez has started. The Under has also hit in six of the last seven meetings between these two teams in Cleveland.

But Under bettors beware: Paul Emmel will be calling strikes for this contest and has gone 7-1 O/U this season and 10-1-1 O/U in his last 12 games. This season he has called pitches with a 62 strike percentage and 8.1 walks per game.

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE

The defending World Series champs are facing the World Series favorites with the Astros -147 favorites in Boston. Both teams have been winning lately but only one side can come away with the W tonight.

After a rough start to the season the BoSox are turning things around having gone 6-1 in their last seven games and 5-0 in Rick Porcello's previous five starts.

The Astros are 5-2 in Gerrit Cole's last seven starts and an incredible 68-32 in their last 100 games on the road. But the 'Stros are just 1-5 in their last six road games against teams with a winning record and 0-4 in thier previous four meetings in the head to head.

Dodgers hit 4 HRs, beat Reds 6-0 for 4th straight victory
May 17, 2019
By The Associated Press

CINCINNATI (AP) Cody Bellinger hit the last of Los Angeles' four homers, Rich Hill stuck out a season-high 10 and the Dodgers won their fourth in a row Friday night, 6-0 over the Cincinnati Reds.

Corey Seager, Joc Pederson and Max Muncy also homered at one of the Dodgers' most comfortable road stops. They're 34-22 at Great American Ball Park, the second-best mark by any NL team, trailing only the Mets' 32-19 record.

Bellinger also had a double, raising his batting average to .410.

Hill (1-1) gave by far his best performance in four starts since returning from a sprained right knee. The left-hander allowed two hits and didn't walk a batter in six innings. He fanned 10 for the first time since June 29 last year against Colorado. Hill also extended the Dodgers' stretch of solid starts. Since April 25, LA's rotation is 11-1 with a 2.19 ERA.

The Reds came in with a .219 team batting average that was second worst in the league, ahead of only Miami. They couldn't overcome another subpar start by Anthony DeSclafani (2-2), who lasted only four innings for the second time in a row.

Cincinnati was blanked for the sixth time, second most in the majors. Only Miami is worse with nine shutouts.

YANKEES 4, RAYS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - CC Sabathia shouted salty insults at Tampa Bay and said he tried to hit one of the Rays' batters, but both sides otherwise kept cool as New York rallied for three runs in the ninth inning and moved into first place in the AL East.

Gio Urshela singled over Kevin Kiermaier's head in deep right-center field to drive home the winning run with two outs. Luke Voit homered on the first pitch from Jose Alvarado (0-3) in the bottom of the ninth to make it 3-2, and New York tied it when pinch-runner Thairo Estrada scored on Alvarado's bases-loaded wild pitch.

Voit and Urshela had three hits apiece. Kendrys Morales clubbed an early solo shot for his first home run since joining the Yankees.

Willy Adames homered off Sabathia, who pitched six effective innings, and rookie Brandon Lowe hit a tiebreaking double against Chad Green with two outs in the eighth. Tampa Bay added another run on shortstop Gleyber Torres' throwing error before rain caused a 35-minute delay in the bottom of the inning.

Torres doubled in the ninth to put runners at second and third with one out.

Jonathan Holder (3-1) struck out two in a perfect inning for the win.

ASTROS 3, RED SOX 1

BOSTON (AP) - George Springer hit his American League-leading 17th home run and Houston picked up its ninth straight victory by beating Boston.

Springer's two-run shot in the eighth off Rick Porcello put the Astros up 2-1 and Houston held on. The Astros improved to 12-3 this month and matched the 2017 World Series championship team for the best start in franchise history at 30-15.

Will Harris (1-0) got the win with one scoreless inning of relief. Roberto Osuna picked up his 11th save.

Houston won the opener of the three-game series between the last two World Series winners and a rematch of last year's ALCS, which Boston won in five games.

Christian Vazquez went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI for Boston, which stranded 11 runners and went 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position.

Porcello (3-4) pitched seven shutout innings for Boston. He allowed two runs and six hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Gerrit Cole pitched five scoreless innings for Houston, allowing six hits, walking one and striking out three.

ORIOLES 5, INDIANS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Dylan Bundy kept Cleveland's lineup in check - and in the ballpark - for 5 2/3 innings and Jonathan Villar hit a three-run homer as Baltimore ended a three-game slide.

Bundy (2-5) didn't allow an earned run on three hits. He struck out seven and threw a season-high 118 pitches.

Villar connected in the third inning off Jefry Rodriguez (1-3) and Stevie Wilkerson homered in the fifth to help the Orioles win for just the second time in nine games.

Wilkerson added an RBI double in the eighth, and the Orioles racked up a season-high seven extra-base hits - two homers, five doubles.

Bundy improved to 4-1 in six career appearances against Cleveland. The 26-year-old had the Indians off-balance while managing to work around some trouble in the third, fifth and sixth innings.

ATHLETICS 7, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Frankie Montas pitched two-run ball into the ninth inning and Oakland beat Detroit for the 14th straight meeting.

Montas (5-2) pitched a career-best 8 2/3 innings, allowing four hits while striking out a career-high 10. Lou Trivino relieved and got the final out after Montas allowed an RBI double to Miguel Cabrera.

Mark Canha and Chad Pinder homered for the A's, and Khris Davis had three hits.

Oakland's winning streak against Detroit is tied for the fifth-longest in franchise history, two short of a 16-game streak over the New York Yankees in 1989-91.

Daniel Norris (2-2) allowed six runs, seven hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings.

Detroit has lost the first five games of a 10-game homestand and been outscored 48-11 in the process.

MARLINS 8, METS 6

MIAMI (AP) - The Marlins scored for the first time in 27 innings, pounded Jacob deGrom for seven runs and snapped a seven-game losing streak by beating New York.

Garrett Cooper's two-run single in the third brought home Miami's first runs since Saturday - also against deGrom. Jorge Alfaro hit a 456-foot home run, only the Marlins' second homer this month, and drove in three. Brian Anderson doubled twice and scored twice.

DeGrom (3-5) gave up nine hits, and the run total against him was a season high.

New York's Pete Alonso hit two solo home runs, giving him 14 this year. J.D. Davis added his fourth homer for the Mets.

Trevor Richards (1-5) allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings for his first victory in nine starts this year. Sergio Romo stranded two runners in the eighth and got the final six outs for his seventh save, and the first two-inning save of his career.

The Marlins ended a streak of seven consecutive losses to New York. Miami's 11 victories this year, fewest in the majors, include three wins against former Cy Young winners - deGrom, Max Scherzer and Corey Kluber.

PHILLIES 5, ROCKIES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run homer, Bryce Harper lined a two-run double and Cole Irvin tossed six effective innings to lead Philadelphia past Colorado.

Irvin (2-0) gave up four runs - three earned - and five hits to win his second career start. Jose Alvarez and Pat Neshek each tossed a scoreless inning and Hector Neris finished for his sixth save in six tries.

Ian Desmond ripped a two-run homer for Colorado. Rockies starter Jon Gray (3-4) allowed five runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The NL East-leading Phillies snapped a three-game losing streak.

Carlos Estevez replaced Gray and surrendered Harper's first RBIs since he hit a grand slam on May 7. Harper had been 4 for 29 with 15 strikeouts before the hit. He heard boos after striking out in his first two at-bats.

BRAVES 12, BREWERS 8

ATLANTA (AP) - Max Fried allowed two hits in six scoreless innings, Dansby Swanson hit a drought-breaking, three-run homer and Atlanta beat Milwaukee in a matchup of second-place teams.

Swanson, Josh Donaldson and Tyler Flowers hit home runs off right-hander Corbin Burnes in a nine-run sixth inning. Freddie Freeman homered and drove in two runs.

Fried (6-2) had five strikeouts and walked two batters. The Braves led 12-0 before three relievers gave up eight runs in three innings.

Jacob Nottingham homered and drove in four runs for the Brewers, who had their three-game winning streak halted.

Jhoulys Chacin (3-5) allowed three runs in five innings.

RANGERS 7, CARDINALS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rougned Odor and Shin-Soo Choo homered in a seven-run second inning, Adrian Sampson got his first career win following opener Jose Leclerc in his first major league start and Texas beat St. Louis for its third straight win.

Joey Gallo had both his hits in the highest-scoring inning this season for Texas, which beat the Cardinals in their first game in Arlington since losing Game 5 of the 2011 World Series.

Leclerc struck out two in a perfect first inning. Sampson (1-3) gave up seven hits and two runs - one earned - in 5 1/3 innings for his first win in his 16th career appearance over three seasons.

Miles Mikolas (4-4), facing his former team for the first time, gave up nine hits and seven runs in 1 1/3 innings, the shortest outing in 52 starts for his career.

After 13 Rangers batted in the second inning, St. Louis relievers retired 18 of the final 20 Texas hitters with 10 strikeouts.

CUBS 14, NATIONALS 6

WASHINGTON (AP) - Kris Bryant matched a career high with three home runs and drove in five as Chicago routed Washington.

Albert Almora Jr., Kyle Schwarber and Willson Contreras also homered to help the NL Central-leading Cubs snap a two-game skid. Javier Baez extended the majors' longest hitting streak to 15 games.

Bryant homered in the seventh, eighth and ninth, making him the 12th player to homer in three straight innings. He finished with four hits and extended his on-base streak to 26 games, a career best and the longest active run in the majors.

Contreras also had four hits. Chicago starter Cole Hamels (4-0) won for the fourth time in five starts.

Max Scherzer (2-5) walked a season-high four and gave up a two-run homer to Almora in the second. Scherzer also struck out eight before exiting.

BLUE JAYS 10, WHITE SOX 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered and Toronto used an offensive barrage to beat Chicago.

Justin Smoak and Danny Jansen also hit home runs as the Blue Jays tied their highest run total of the season. All nine starters had at least one hit, and eight of them scored at least a run.

Guerrero went 1 for 4 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs.

Aaron Sanchez allowed two runs in three innings before leaving the game in the fourth with a blister on his right middle finger. Sam Gaviglio (3-0) came on in relief and tossed three scoreless innings to earn the win. Javy Guerra finished with three scoreless innings for his first save.

Ivan Nova (2-4) allowed nine runs and eight hits with four walks in three innings.

DIAMONDBACKS 7, GIANTS 0

PHOENIX (AP) - Eduardo Escobar hit a three-run triple and David Peralta homered, lifting Arizona over San Francisco.

Peralta hit a solo homer off Jeff Samardzija (2-2) and Escobar cleared the bases with a slicing triple against Derek Holland in the seventh.

Adam Jones had a run-scoring double among his three hits to help Torey Lovullo win his 200th game as Arizona's manager.

Merrill Kelly (4-4) worked around a high early pitch count in 5 1/3 scoreless innings after two shaky outings. He allowed six hits and struck out four.

Samardzija allowed three runs on five hits and walked three in 5 1/3 innings. He did not strike out a batter for the first time in 101 career starts.

TWINS 7, MARINERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Martin Perez rebounded from his first loss of the season to overpower Seattle into the seventh inning and Max Kepler drove in three runs as Minnesota won its fourth straight.

Perez (6-1) allowed five hits and struck out seven while matching a season high with four walks over 6 2/3 innings.

Seattle's run came on Edwin Encarnacion's two-out RBI single in the sixth inning.

Seattle starter Marco Gonzales (5-3) lost his third straight decision. He allowed five runs and seven hits in the fourth and fifth innings.

Saturday?s 6-pack

Six slowest-working pitchers in major leagues:

3) David Price Red Sox, 30.2

2) Josh Hader Brewers, 30.9

1) Kenley Jansen Dodgers, 31.3

Tweet of the Day
?So Le?Veon Bell walked away from $14.5 million last year with a coach that wanted him and now will play for $14.5 million this year with a coach that doesn?t want him. Got it.?
Andrew Brandt

Saturday?s quiz
When was last time NBA had a franchise in Canada, other than the Raptors?

Friday?s quiz
Mike Dunleavy was the Portland Trailblazers? coach the last time they were in a Western Conference final.

Thursday?s quiz
Jets beat the Baltimore Colts 16-7 in their only Super Bowl appearance, in Super Bowl III.

*********************************

Saturday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??.

13) You watch Angel Hernandez call balls/strikes, and the electronic strike zone that will come to baseball someday doesn?t seem like a such a bad idea.

I?m against the electronic strike zone, but Hernandez is a terrible umpire, and has been for a long time. Friday night, Colorado?s Jon Gray walked the opposing pitcher on 10 pitches; three of the four pitches Hernandez called balls were strikes on the electronic strike zone on TV.

I had no dog in the fight, no fantasy players involved, was just watching the game. No one pays to watch the umpire; call strikes, especially on the opposing pitcher. It isn?t that difficult.

12) Not sure if I?ve told this story here before, so here goes. It is a little random, but it was a funny moment. Was listening this week to some people talk about their kids going to high school now, and it reminded me of this:

I?m in 10th grade, long time ago (1974-75) and it is Biology class, which was a struggle for me. I sat in the back of the class, where I had a great view of a classmate named Joann who was very pretty but didn?t know I existed (go figure).

Anyway, our teacher was a little??different. If a kid was talking in class, the teacher would take an eraser (yes, we had chalkboards back then) and drill the kid with it. I mean, he would fire the eraser at the kid, drill him, and no one ever complained. These days, he would get sued.

One day, the kid sitting three seats in front of me was yukking it up about something, a big kid named Nick, and the teacher takes aim with his eraser, but he misses and drills the young lady sitting next to Nick. Stunned silence, then muffled laughter; the girl started crying.

Was very difficult to sit there the rest of the period and not laugh; never saw another eraser thrown though. Could you imagine if they let that nitwit carry a gun in class?

11) Last three seasons, Golden State Warriors are:
? When Curry plays and Durant doesn?t: 32-4
? When Durant plays and Curry doesn?t: 28-18
? When neither one plays: 1-6
? When they both play: 163-46

10) 50 years ago Friday, Colts, Browns, Steelers agreed to move from the NFL to the AFC, so that when the NFL/AFL merger happened, there would be an equal number of teams in both conferences.

According to Hall of Famer Gil Brandt, Raiders? owner Al Davis came up with the idea, but no one would agree to switch until $3M was put on the table; then the teams became willing. Funny how that happens.

9) Indiana Pacers? G Tyreke Evans was dismissed/disqualified from the NBA for two years, for violating the terms of the NBA?s anti-drug program. Under the program, he is eligible to apply for reinstatement in two years.

Evans averaged 10.2 ppg, 2.9 rpg and 2.4 apg in 20.3 mpg this year- he?s scored 15.7 ppg in his 11-year NBA career, and was due to become a free agent this offseason.

8) I?ve said this here before, but if you like the NBA, then the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas in early July is an excellent thing to see.

They play in two gyms at UNLV, there are usually eight games a day, and it costs around $30 for the whole day, which is worth it, just to be out of the 110-degree desert heat.

I?ve gone a few times, and it is good stuff. You see all the rookies, some 2nd-year guys; most of the coaches/GM?s are there. I was walking in the hallway one day, and Jerry West was there, talking to some people. If you like the NBA, it is an excellent thing to do.

I would discourage you from wagering on the games, however; teams need to take a look at certain guys, so they don?t always use their best possible lineups every game.

7) If you?re heading to Las Vegas this summer, right now Treasure Island, the Wynn, Venetian, Palazzo, SLS, Tropicana, Circus Circus, and Stratosphere are the casinos on the Strip that offer free parking. Lot of casinos charge to park now because of the T-Mobile Arena not having its own parking lot.

6) Las Vegas casinos pretty much now all have betting lines up for every NFL game this season, except for Week 17. Lot can change between now and the season, but if you think you?re better than the oddsmakers, you can take your shot at the windows now.

Golden Nugget is posting spreads for its college games of the year on May 30.

5) From Ralph Michaels:

Since 2015, Week 2 NFL road teams that also played on the road in Week 1 are 1-14 vs spread; there are four such teams this season. Only cover in that sample was Kansas City winning 42-37 at Pittsburgh LY, after they led 21-0 in first quarter.

4) Baseball stuff:
? Giants activated C Buster Posey from the 7-day concussion DL.
? Colorado brought up 2B prospect Brandon Rodgers.
? Toronto P Aaron Sanchez (blister) left Friday? game early.
? Justin Turner (bruised shin) left Friday?s game early

3) QB Tommy Stevens transferred from Penn State to Mississippi State, where he?ll play for Joe Moorhead, who used to be OC at Penn State.

2) Most teams pitched for, MLB history:
Edwin Jackson: 14, Octavio Dotel: 13, Mike Morgan, Ron Villone: 12 each.

1) Jim Nantz turned 60 years old Friday, which makes me feel old.

LEADING OFF: Snell's 2nd chance vs Yanks, Turner banged up
May 17, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

DO OVER

Blake Snell makes his second straight start against the Yankees. The Rays left-handed ace was overpowering against New York on Sunday, but his 12 strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball weren't enough in a 7-1 loss. Yankees righty Masahiro Tanaka got the win in that game, throwing seven innings of one-run ball while appearing to rediscover his go-to split-finger fastball. Tampa Bay entered the weekend series with a 1/2-game lead over New York in the AL East.

COUNTING UP...

Houston tries for its 10th straight win in a game at Fenway Park. George Springer hit his AL-leading 17th homer Friday in a 3-1 victory against the Red Sox, a go-ahead two-run shot in the eighth inning. Houston is 12-3 this month and has matched the 2017 World Series championship team for the best start in franchise history at 30-15. Corbin Martin (1-0) is set to make his second career start for Houston.

RESTED RED HEAD

The Dodgers expect to be without Justin Turner a day after he fouled a ball off his left shin. The red-headed slugger was pulled from a 6-0 win over Cincinnati and will likely get at least a day to recover, though X-rays were negative and LA doesn't seem concerned about his long-term well-being. Walker Buehler (4-0) pitches for the Dodgers against the Reds' Tyler Mahle (0-5).

FRESH FISH

The Marlins found their offensive stroke Friday against Jacob deGrom in an 8-6 win, and they'll try to build on that as they continue a series against the Mets. Miami ended a 27-inning scoreless streak - funny enough, a skid bookended with runs against deGrom, the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner. Now they'll try to pile on against Steven Matz, making his first start since May 3 after dealing with forearm irritation.

OLD SCHOOL FIX

With a little help from his high school pitching coach, Lucas Giolito is finally making good on his immense potential with the White Sox. Entering a start against Toronto, Giolito (4-1, 3.55) has allowed one run over 14 1/3 innings in his past two outings, striking out 16. A former top prospect, Giolito had a 6.13 ERA last season, highest among qualified starters. With a shorter arm action and a more aggressive approach, Giolito has been a breakout performer on a club that entered the weekend just two games under .500 at 20-22.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Jon Lester, Chicago Cubs (3-1, 1.16 ERA, $300):
The Cubs are on a nice little run winning 21 of their last 28 games and getting performances like the ones they?ve gotten out of Lester are a big reason why. The veteran lefty has been outstanding this season, but he?s been nearly unhittable even more recently.

Lester has an ERA of 0.00, let?s repeat that. An ERA of 0.00 over this last three starts with a 1.02 WHIP while striking out 20 and walking just 20 in 19.2 innings pitched. He?ll look to keep that going as h toes the rubber against Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals in Washington tonight. The Cubs are currently +130 road dogs with a total of 9.

SLUMPING

Zack Godley, Arizona Diamondbacks (1-3, 7.65 ERA, $-26):
It has been a rough go for Godley in 2019. The D-backs? right hander lost his spot the rotation after pitching to a 7.58 ERA and a 1.72 WHIP in his first six starts. Since then, Godley has been used as a reliever and a ?Opener? once.

Today, he makes a spot start at home against the Giants and head coach Torey Lovullo wouldn?t confirm if this would be another ?Opener? start or if he would get more of a run. Either way the D-backs are in tough today against Madison Bumgarner and the Giants. Arizona is currently slight -108 home fave with a total of 8.5.

3 STRIKES

SUPER SNELL?S KRYPTONITE

Blake Snell has become one of the best pitchers in the MLB and is the defending American League Cy Young Award Winner, but if there?s one thing that he still struggles with it?s pitching at Yankee Stadium. The lefty has made eight career starts in the Bronx and the Rays have gone 1-7 in those games where he has pitched to a 5.63 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. Snell and the Rays are currently -120 road faves for this afternoon?s matchup.

MEANWHILE, OVER IN PHILLY?

The Phillies host the Rockies this afternoon that is definitely trending towards the Over. The Rockies Antonio Senzatela has a 6.33 ERA over his last five starts and the Over is 5-0 in those games, while the Phillies Aaron Nola has been inconsistent this season to the tune of a 4.86 ERA resulting in the Over going 8-1 in his starts this season. The Over is also 8-2-1 in the last 11 meetings between these two teams in Philly. Today?s total is currently 9.5.

IT?S ALL OVER UMP

Jeff Kellogg will be calling balls and strikes tonight in Atlanta when the Braves host the Brewers and Over bettors should rejoice. The Over is 16-5-1 in Kellogg?s last 22 games behind home plate, including 6-1 this season. That?s due in part to his very low 61.5 percent strike rate. More balls, more baserunners, more runs. The total for tonight?s game is currently 9.5.
