Meadows HR in 11th, Rays top Yanks 2-1, back into 1st place
May 18, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Tyler White's two-run double capped a five-run first inning, Josh Reddick hit a solo homer and the Houston Astros kept rolling, beating the Boston Red Sox 7-3 Saturday night for their 10th straight victory.

Michael Brantley had three hits and an RBI for Houston (31-15), which matched the best start in franchise history after 46 games.

Christian Vazquez hit a solo homer for the Red Sox, who had won six of eight.

Josh James (1-0) got the victory with three innings of hitless relief after starter Corbin Martin went four, giving up three runs, two earned, in his second major league start.

Boston spot starter Hector Velazquez (1-3) retired just one batter, giving up five runs, three hits with two walks and had a spattering of boos cascading down as he walked off.

George Springer opened the game with a triple off the center-field wall and Brantley followed with an RBI double over the head of right fielder Mookie Betts' leap at the bullpen wall before Reddick's sacrifice fly.

Yuli Gurriel's bloop single made it 3-0 and chased Velazquez. White then hit reliever Colten Brewer's first pitch down the right-field line for a two-run double.

CARDINALS 8, RANGERS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Paul DeJong homered and had a season-high four RBIs and Matt Carpenter's opposite-field double off the very top of the outfield wall ignited a decisive inning for the Cardinals, who got their first victory over the Rangers since the 2011 World Series.

Carpenter was initially given a two-run homer in the fifth after his drive hit the wide pad atop the 14-foot left field wall, bounced up and then came back down into the field of play. That was changed to an RBI double on replay review after the Rangers challenged. It was the first run in a five-run outburst.

The Cardinals had lost seven regular-season games in a row against Texas since their World Series title eight years ago.

Cardinals rookie right-hander Dakota Hudson (3-3) struck out five and allowed two runs over six innings.

Ariel Jurado (1-2) was lifted in the fifth inning and DeJong greeted reliever Jeanmar Gomez with a two-run double into the left field corner that made it 4-0.

Thunderstorms with heavy rain delayed the start of the game by 2 hours, 11 minutes.

RAYS 2, YANKEES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Austin Meadows homered off Luis Cessa in the 11th inning for the Tampa Bay Rays, who regained the AL East lead after dropping behind New York for a day.

New York's bullpen retired 13 in a row before Meadows lined a slider from Cessa (0-1) into the right-field seats for his ninth homer.

Hunter Wood (1-0) pitched a perfect 11th in his first appearance since May 1 following a stint on the injured list caused by right shoulder soreness.

Brandon Lowe tied the score in the seventh, homering on the second pitch from reliever Tommy Kahnle.

Masahiro Tanaka outpitched AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell for the second time in less than a week and was provided a lead when Snell threw a run-scoring wild pitch in the third. Jose Alvarado notched his fifth save in six chances.

Tanaka allowed three hits in six scoreless innings, struck out six and walked none. He left with a bruised shin after getting hit by a hard grounder up the middle in the sixth. The Yankees said X-rays of the shin were negative.

Athletics 4, Tigers 1

DETROIT (AP) - Daniel Mengden pitched seven impressive innings and Nick Hundley and Chad Pinder homered to lift the Oakland Athletics to their 15th straight win over Detroit.

Mengden (1-1) allowed a run and three hits. Lou Trivino worked the eighth inning, and Blake Treinen pitched the ninth for his seventh save in nine chances.

Matthew Boyd (4-4) allowed four runs in 6 1/3 innings for the Tigers, who have dropped six straight. Boyd struck out eight.

Making his 100th career appearance, Boyd retired his first seven batters before allowing a single to Jurickson Profar, the first of three hits for the Oakland infielder. Hundley followed with his first home run of the season, which barely cleared the wall in right field.

Profar hit an RBI double in the fifth to make it 3-1, and Pinder added a solo homer in the seventh

The only run for Detroit came in the fourth when Ronny Rodriguez scored on Mengden's wild pitch.

If the A's beat the Tigers on Sunday, they would tie a franchise record for their longest winning streak against one team. Oakland won 16 in a row over the New York Yankees from 1989-91.

REDS 4, DODGERS 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jesse Winker's homer ended LA's stretch of scoreless pitching and Yasiel Puig singled home a pair of runs as the Reds snapped the Dodgers' four-game winning streak.

The Reds beat the Dodgers for the first time in five games this season, including LA's three-game sweep in April. The Dodgers are 34-23 at Great American Ball Park, the second-best mark by an NL team behind the Mets.

Tyler Mahle (1-5) got his first win in his ninth start, allowing four singles and a pair of walks in five innings. The Dodgers got a base runner in each of the first five innings Saturday but Mahle escaped a pair of scoring threats.

Three relievers completed the Reds' sixth shutout, tied with the Cubs for most in the NL. The Dodgers were blanked for the fourth time.

Winker's solo homer in the second inning off Walker Buehler (4-1) ended the Dodgers' streak of 23 scoreless innings.

Cody Bellinger had a pair of singles, leaving his batting average at .409. He fouled a ball off his right foot in his final at-bat but stayed in the game and singled.

INDIANS 4, ORIOLES 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Adam Plutko, making his first appearance of the season, allowed one run in six innings - a solo homer by Trey Mancini for Baltimore's only hit.

Called up from Triple-A Columbus before the game, Plutko struck out four, walked two and was pulled after throwing 83 pitches.

Cleveland used three relievers to finish it. Oliver Perez struck out three of the four hitters he faced. Adam Cimber retired a batter in the eighth, but a fielding error by third baseman Jose Ramirez and a walk put two runners on.

Brad Hand struck out Jonathan Villar to end the inning and worked the ninth for his 12th save in 12 chances.

Jordan Luplow and Carlos Santana homered for Cleveland, extending Baltimore's major-league-leading total of home runs allowed to 93.

John Means (5-4) took the loss.

NATIONALS 5, CUBS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Stephen Strasburg allowed two runs in eight innings and struck out seven, and Juan Soto had two hits and drove in three runs to lead Washington.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon protested the loss after twice coming out to complain about the delivery of Washington closer Sean Doolittle, who pitched the ninth for his eighth save in nine chances.

Brian Dozier's homer gave the Nationals a 1-0 lead. Soto's two-run double capped a three-run third inning, and he added an RBI single in the fifth.

David Bote homered in the sixth for the Cubs, who have lost three of four.

Chicago's Jon Lester, who hadn't given up an earned run in his last three outings, a span totaling 19 2/3 innings, allowed five runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings. He had only allowed a total of five earned runs over his first seven starts of the season.

BRAVES 4, BREWERS 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Freddie Freeman led off the 10th inning with a home run into the right-field seats to give the Braves their fourth straight win after Luke Jackson blew a 3-2 lead in the ninth.

Freeman pulled a fastball from Josh Hader (0-3) for his 10th homer. Jacob Webb (2-0) pitched a perfect 10th for Atlanta.

Braves rookie left fielder Austin Riley continued his hot start in his first week in the majors by hitting a go-ahead, two-run homer in the sixth for a 3-2 lead.

Jackson couldn't protect a 3-2 lead in the ninth. Jackson hit Keston Hiura with a pitch to open the inning. Hiura moved to third on Orlando Arcia's one-out single to right and scored on Lorenzo Cain's high bouncer over third baseman Josh Donaldson for a 3-3 tie.

Riley's homer off left-hander Alex Claudio gave him eight hits, including two homers, in four games since he was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett.

WHITE SOX 4, BLUE JAYS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Lucas Giolito threw five solid innings, Leury Garcia homered and the Chicago White Sox won a game that was stopped after 4 + innings because of rain.

Giolito (5-1) struck out the side in the top of the fifth before play was halted. The game was called after a wait of three hours. Giolito gave up a run and three hits and was credited with his first career complete game. He struck out four and walked two.

Yonder Alonso had two singles and two RBIs for the White Sox, who have won five of seven.

Ryan Feierabend (0-1) allowed four runs and seven hits in four innings for Toronto in his first start in the majors since 2008. He struck out two and walked one. The Blue Jays have lost 10 of 13.

Garcia homered to left field on Feierabend's second pitch for his second home run this season and second career leadoff drive.

Alonso and Charlie Tilson singled to drive in two runs for a 3-1 lead in the second inning and Alonso added another RBI single in the third.

MARLINS 2, METS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Miami starter Pablo Lopez gave up a double on his first pitch, then combined with the Marlins' bullpen to hold the New York Mets hitless the rest of the way.

The Marlins, with the worst record in the majors, beat the Mets for the second straight day after entering the series with a seven-game losing streak. The Mets lost their fourth in a row.

Jeff McNeil sliced the first pitch of the game just inside the left field line for a double, but that was all the Mets managed against Lopez (3-5) and two relievers. Lopez pitched seven innings and tied a career high with seven strikeouts.

Tayron Guerrero got four outs and Adam Conley finished for his second save.

Jon Berti hit his second home run of the season and Brian Anderson knocked in the other Miami run with a single in the third.

Steven Matz (3-3) was activated from the 10-day injured list to make his first start in two weeks. He allowed two runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings and struck out six with two walks.

PHILLIES 2, ROCKIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bryce Harper homered over the batter's eye in center field in the first inning, a drive estimated at 466 feet, and Aaron Nola tied his career high with 12 strikeouts while pitching into the seventh inning to lead the NL East-leading Phillies.

Nola (4-0) allowed one run on eight hits while walking one. He notched double-digit strikeouts for the 10th time but first this season and got past the fourth inning for the seventh time in 10 starts.

Philadelphia went in front 2-0 in the third with the help of the Rockies. Jean Segura walked, went to third on Rhys Hoskins' single that was booted in left by Raimel Tapia, and scored on a wild pitch by Antonio Senzatela (3-3).

Tony Wolters tripled in the seventh and scored on a double by Ryan McMahon for Colorado, which has lost three straight.

Hector Neris retired six straight batters in the final two innings for his seventh save in as many chances.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

? Are the Jets trying to hire Peyton Manning as their new GM?

? Memphis now has the #1 recruiting class in college hoop this spring.

? Braves 4, Brewers 3? Freddie Freeman with a walk-off homer.

? Twins 18, Mariners 4? Seattle started season 13-3; they?re 9-23 since then.

? Angels 6, Royals 3? Mike Trout hit his 250th career home run.

? In case you were wondering, 80 years ago this week, a Princeton-Columbia baseball game was televised, the first sporting event ever televised.

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Warriors 110, Trailblazers 99? Looks like the two conference finals could be very short series. I?ve said this before, but basketball doesn?t need best-of-7 series. Would be way better with best-of-3 series, with a best-of-5 final; imagine the drama?

Kevin Durant?s first game against the Warriors next year has to be on national TV, right? Opening night? Christmas?

12) Earlier this year, a guy at Caesers Palace in Las Vegas bet $20,000 that Eldrick Woods would NOT win all four majors this year, so when Woods missed the cut at the PGA Friday, the guy won his bet, which paid him off a handsome $20.

He risked $20,000 to win $20. Oy.

11) Astros? pitching coach Brent Strom was the 2nd guy to have Tommy John surgery back in the 60?s, which means he came close to being the first guy to have Brent Strom surgery.

10) Former NFL QB David Carr works on NFL Network now; this week, Carr left Joe Montana out of his list of the top 10 QB?s in the Super Bowl era.

If you know me, you know I?ve been a Ram fan since the mid-60?s and I?m no Notre Dame fan, so Montana isn?t my favorite player, but good grief, you lose credibility when you leave him off a top 10 list of QB?s in the last 53 years.

9) Orioles averaged 30,805 fans per home game in 2014; they?re averaging 15,720 this year. Its not that they?re losing, its that they have no chance of winning- there?s a difference.

From 2012-16, Baltimore won the most games in the AL; now? Not so much.

8) College basketball transfer portal:
? South Dakota State G David Jenkins bolts to UNLV.
? Javonte Smart is coming back to LSU next year; must pay well to play ball there.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Minnesota put DH Nelson Cruz (wrist) on the IL.
? Washington put P Anibal Sanchez (hamstring) on IL.
? White Sox put P Manny Banuelos (shoulder) on IL.

6) Rick Porcello is the last major league pitcher to throw a shutout where he didn?t strike anyone out- that happened in 2014.

5) From CNN.com: ?Local, state and federal law enforcement conducted a massive heroin bust in Connecticut on Friday, resulting in 51 arrests and the seizure of guns, $15,000 in cash and thousands of bags of heroin packaged for sale.?

I have a question; what happens to all that heroin? What happens to the money? Seriously, inquiring minds would like to know.

4) White Sox 4, Blue Jays 1 (5)? Ryan Feierabend made his first MLB appearance in five years; it was his first start in the majors since 2008. This game was shortened by rain.

3) If the Bruins win the Stanley Cup this spring, then Boston would have the reigning champs in the NHL, MLB and the NFL. Last time that happened? Detroit, in 1935.

2) Joke of the Day: Did you hear about the new restaurant on the moon?

Great food, no atmosphere.

1) May 19 is a sad day in my house; my dad passed away four years ago tonight. He was a terrific guy; loved golf, the Mets, Knicks and his weekly football pools. He was a great example of what a person should be, and I miss him every day.

LEADING OFF: A's thump Tigers, Sale starts, Callaway cloud?
May 18, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

ALL A'S

The Athletics try to beat Detroit for the 16th time when Mike Fiers starts at Comerica Park.

A win by the A's would equal the franchise record for the longest winning streak against one team. Oakland took 16 in a row from the Yankees from 1989-91.

Rookie Gregory Soto goes for his first major league win when he pitches for the Tigers. The Athletics are aiming for a four-game sweep - they host Detroit in a three-game series in early September.

RE-SALE

Red Sox ace Chris Sale starts for the first time since striking out 17 in just seven innings against Colorado. He'll face the hard-hitting Houston Astros, who have won 10 in a row, at Fenway Park.

Sale (1-5, 4.24 ERA) looks to continue his stellar revival after a rough start this year. After opening the season 0-5 with a 6.30 ERA in six starts, he has a 1.29 ERA in three starts in May.

The lefty is now the only pitcher in major league history to allow no more than three hits, strike out at least 14 and walk nobody in consecutive starts.

CALLAWAY CLOUDS

The Mets have lost four in a row and fallen a season-worst four games under .500, increasing the speculation that manager Mickey Callaway's job is in jeopardy.

Miami, with the worst record in the majors, has beaten the Mets two straight days, including holding them to one hit Saturday in a 2-0 win.

''I'm coming in tomorrow to manage the New York Mets and I'm going to be enthusiastic about it and I'm going to continue to lead this team to something special,'' Callaway said.

Callaway is in his second season.

''I do believe we have talent in there,'' he said. ''We haven't played like that. There's no doubt that hasn't been the case, but I believe those things for a reason and I believe everyone comes to the park every day for something greater than what's been happening. We have to start making it happen, somehow, some way.''

FEELING BETTER?

The Yankees will see how Masahiro Tanaka is doing, a day after he was hit just above the right ankle by hard grounder against Tampa Bay. X-rays were negative.

Tanaka said he wasn't sure whether he would be able to take his next turn.

''There's some swelling and some blueness to it,'' Tanaka said through a translator.

''We'll see how it is tomorrow and I guess we can evaluate from there,'' he said.

STREAKING/SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Hyun-Jin Ryu, Los Angeles Dodgers (5-1, 1.72 ERA, $150)
: Ryu might be the hottest pitcher in the majors. His control is reminiscent of Greg Maddux with an incredible 54/3 strikeout to walk ratio through eight starts. He's coming off back to back shutouts against Washington and Atlanta and has an incredible 0.73 WHIP and .189 BAA this season. Ryu has to be ecstatic with the Dodgers facing the Cincinnati Reds and their league-worst .217 BA this afternoon.

The Reds will start Tanner Roark and his solid 3.50 ERA. With the Dodgers batting just .238 and scoring just 4.55 runs per game away from home, the Under 5 for the first five innings looks like a great play.

SLUMPING

Shane Bieber, Cleveland Indians (2-2, 3.81 ERA, $142)
: It wasn't that long ago that we had Beiber as our streaking pitcher but oh the times, they have a changed. Through his first four games of the season Bieber was 2-0 with 1.71 ERA and 0.81 WHIP. In five starts since then, he's gone 0-2 with a 5.34 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. In his last start, Bieber gave up four dingers in just over six innings of work against the White Sox.

Bieber is in a good spot to snap out of that funk today, with Cleveland -269 favorites against the Baltimore Orioles who average just 3.75 runs per game on the road.

3 STRIKES

SERIES SWEEP IN SEATTLE?

Minnesota will be looking to pull off the road sweep in Seattle today after demolishing the Mariners in three straight games by a combined score of 36-11. Minnesota has been terrific on the road this season going 15-7, including 6-0 in their last six away games. They are also 9-2 in starter Kyle Gibson's last 11 starts overall, and 7-1 in Gibson's last eight starts against the M's.

The Mariners started the season off like they were contenders, but their pretender status has been revealed with a 9-24 record in their last 33 games and a 2-9 record over their previous 11 games at home. The game is currently a -108 pick'em at FanDuel.

STILL LOOKING FOR HIS FIRST WIN

The Braves have taken the first two games of their home series against the Brewers but there's reason to believe the line might be a bit too skewed in their favor for this afternoon's game where they are small +115 underdogs.

The Braves will be starting Mike Foltynewicz who is still looking for his first win this season having gone 0-3 with a 8.02 ERA and .295 BAA. Folty has given up five homers in his last 10 innings which is bad news against a Brewers lineup that ranks fourth in the majors in homeruns. Atlanta is 0-6 in Folty's last six starts and 0-4 in his previous four starts at home.

The Brewers will have Brandon Woodruff and his 6-1 record with 3.72 ERA on the mound. The Brew Crew is 4-0 in Woodruff's last four starts and 7-2 in his previous nine starts on the road.

ROYALS ROAD WOES

It's rare to see the Los Angeles Angels and Tyler Skaggs (5.05 ERA) as big favorites but they are -158 tonight against Danny Duffy and the Kansas City Royals. The Royals are just 5-16 on the road this season and winless in their last four games overall. They are also just 0-7 in Duffy's last seven Sunday starts.

The Angles are 6-2 in their last eight games at home and 7-1 in their previous eight contests against a start pitcher with a WHIP over 1.30.

The Royals are just 2-10 in the last 12 meetings between these two sides and 0-5 in the last five meetings in L.A.

Red Sox avoid series sweep, snap Astros' 10-game win streak
May 19, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Michael Chavis homered, Xander Bogaerts hit a tiebreaking double in the seventh inning and the Boston Red Sox averted a series sweep against Houston with a 4-3 victory Sunday that snapped the Astros' 10-game winning streak.

Mookie Betts scored three runs for Boston, which lost the first two games in its first meeting with the Astros since beating them in the 2018 AL Championship Series.

Carlos Correa hit a two-run homer off Chris Sale for Houston, which is 13-4 in May.

Astros outfielder George Springer, who began the day leading the American League with 17 homers, exited with lower back stiffness after striking out three times against Sale.

Bogaerts' double to deep left-center off Framber Valdez (1-2) scored Betts scored from first base.

Sale struck out 10 in 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs and four hits with five walks. In his previous start, he became the first major league pitcher to strike out 17 batters in seven innings.

Marcus Walden (6-0) escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam and tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Brandon Workman got three outs for his first career save.

YANKEES 13, RAYS 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Brett Gardner homered early, then got two hits during a seven-run burst in the sixth inning fueled by five walks that sent New York past Tampa Bay.

The Yankees took their second straight weekend series from the Rays and moved a half-game in front atop the AL East. Aaron Hicks homered for the first time since returning from a back injury and DJ LeMahieu also connected to help New York win for the 10th time in 13 games.

Kevin Kiermaier and Willy Adames homered on consecutive pitches in the second to give the Rays a 2-1 lead. Brandon Lowe hit a three-run homer in the third, his third of the series, to make it 5-3.

Adam Ottavino (2-1) struck out Austin Meadows with the bases loaded to end the sixth and keep the score tied at 5. Chance Adams pitched three scoreless innings for his first career save.

Gardner, who hit a two-run homer off Charlie Morton in the second, started the Yankees sixth with an infield hit off the glove of Diego Castillo (0-3). Pinch-hitter Thairo Estrada delivered a three-run double off Casey Sadler, and Gardner capped the inning with an RBI double.

PHILLIES 7, ROCKIES 5

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bryce Harper homered for the second straight day and pinch-hitter J.T. Realmuto also went deep to help Philadelphia complete a three-game sweep of Colorado.

Harper's tiebreaking, two-run shot in the sixth inning wasn't as prodigious as his 466-foot drive in Saturday's 2-1 victory, but this 404-footer had plenty of distance to clear the right-center wall for the NL East leaders.

The $330 million slugger also had a single and an RBI groundout.

Ryan McMahon hit two homers, and Charlie Blackmon and Trevor Story also went deep. But the Rockies, who dropped 9+ games behind the first-place Dodgers in the NL West, have lost four straight.

Realmuto tied it 5-all in the sixth with his first career pinch-hit homer, a two-run shot off Bryan Shaw (2-1). Harper connected against Mike Dunn.

Edgar Garcia (1-0) got one out for his first major league win, and Pat Neshek earned his third save.

Struggling starter Kyle Freeland lasted just 1 2/3 innings for Colorado.

MARLINS 3, METS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Sandy Alcantara threw a two-hitter in a pitching duel with Noah Syndergaard, and Miami beat the reeling New York Mets to finish a three-game sweep.

A day after being shut out on just one hit, the Mets lost their fifth in a row. The latest defeat against a team with baseball's worst record is sure to intensify speculation about the job security of manager Mickey Callaway.

Alcantara (2-4) struck out eight, walked one and needed only 89 pitches for the Marlins' first complete game shutout since Edinson Volquez tossed a no-hitter against Arizona in June 2017. The 23-year-old righty threw his first complete game in the majors.

Syndergaard (3-4) retired his first 12 batters and allowed two runs in seven innings.

The Mets (20-25) have their longest losing streak of the year and are a season-worst five games under .500. They went 1-5 on their trip and have dropped 16 of their past 20 road games.

The Marlins (13-31), who came into the series with a seven-game losing streak, have their first three-game winning streak of the season. Curtis Granderson homered for their final run in the eighth.

BREWERS 3, BRAVES 2, 10 INNINGS

ATLANTA (AP) - Ben Gamel led off the 10th inning with a home run that lifted Milwaukee over Atlanta.

All five runs in the game came on homers.

Gamel's drive off Wes Parsons (1-2) helped the Brewers end Atlanta's four-game winning streak. Christian Yelich and Keston Hiura also connected for Milwaukee, which avoided a three-game sweep in a matchup of 2018 NL division winners.

Ronald Acuna Jr. and Freddie Freeman went deep for the Braves. Freeman has homered in four consecutive games for the first time in his career.

Josh Hader (1-3) pitched two perfect innings after Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff went eight.

DODGERS 8, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Hyun-Jin Ryu threw seven shutout innings to extend his major league-leading streak to 31, and Cody Bellinger hit his 17th homer as Los Angeles defeated Cincinnati.

Ryu (6-1) had baserunners in each of his first five innings, but none of them got past second and he retired his last eight batters. The left-hander allowed five hits with one walk and five strikeouts, lowering his ERA to 1.52.

Alex Verdugo drove in three runs and Russell Martin added a solo homer for the Dodgers.

Verdugo's RBI double gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the second inning and they added a run in the third on a fielder's choice.

Reds right fielder Yasiel Puig crashed into a retaining wall in foul territory while making a catch and later left the game with a sprained right shoulder.

Bellinger's two-run shot that glanced off the glove of a leaping Nick Senzel in center field made it 4-0 in the seventh.

Jose Peraza and pinch-hitter Derek Dietrich homered in the ninth for the Reds. Tanner Roark (3-3) allowed two runs in five innings.

INDIANS, 10, ORIOLES 0

CLEVELAND (AP) - Shane Bieber struck out a career-high 15 in his first major league complete game and Cleveland routed Baltimore.

A day after being held to one hit, the Orioles were overmatched against Bieber (3-2).

The 23-year-old right-hander gave up five hits, didn't walk anyone and threw 107 pitches. He bounced back from allowing four home runs against the White Sox in his previous start.

Carlos Santana hit an RBI single in the first inning, then led off the third with his seventh home run.

Cleveland took three of four from the Orioles. Baltimore has lost nine of 11 and allowed a major league-high 94 home runs.

Yefry Ramirez (0-2) struggled in his first start of the season, giving up four earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.

ATHLETICS 5, TIGERS 3, 7 INNINGS, SUSPENDED

DETROIT (AP) - The Oakland Athletics led Detroit in the bottom of the seventh inning when the game was suspended because of rain.

Oakland scored twice in the top of the seventh to take the lead, but the teams were unable to complete the inning before it began to rain hard and the tarp was brought onto the field. The game will resume Sept. 6 before the Tigers play a series in Oakland.

It was the finale of a four-game series that marked Oakland's only scheduled trip to Detroit this season.

Play was called after a delay of 1 hour, 41 minutes.

Stephen Piscotty hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the seventh, putting Oakland in position for its 16th straight victory over the Tigers - but the A's will have to wait 3+ months before trying to close it out.

Mike Fiers allowed three runs in six innings for Oakland. Fiers pitched for the Tigers last season before he was traded to the A's in August.

Detroit was trying to snap a six-game losing streak.

BLUE JAYS 5, WHITE SOX 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit another home run, Danny Jansen and Billy McKinney also connected and Toronto beat Chicago.

Guerrero has hit all four of his homers in the last six games. The highly touted 20-year-old didn't homer in his first 13 games after making his major league debut in late April.

Guerrero's two-run drive broke a 1-all tie in the eighth inning. Jansen added a two-run homer in the ninth.

Jose Abreu drove in two runs for the White Sox.

Daniel Hudson (3-1) worked a scoreless seventh. Ken Giles gave up an RBI double to the first batter he faced, then got four outs for his 10th save.

Kelvin Herrera (1-3) took the loss.

RANGERS 5, CARDINALS 4, 10 INNINGS

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Nomar Mazara hit a sacrifice fly off reliever Carlos Martinez to cap a two-run rally in the 10th inning that lifted Texas over St. Louis.

Both teams blew leads in the late innings.

Dexter Fowler's solo homer in the ninth off Rangers reliever Chris Martin made it 3-all. The Cardinals went ahead in the 10th when Harrison Bader doubled off Jeanmar Gomez (1-0) and scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul DeJong.

Rougned Odor opened the Texas 10th with a single off Jordan Hicks (1-2). Danny Santana walked and pinch-hitter Willie Calhoun had a tying single.

Shin-Soo Choo hit a leadoff homer for the Rangers. Santana gave Texas a 3-2 lead in the eighth with a pinch-hit home run.

DeJong drove in three runs for the Cardinals.

ROYALS 5, ANGELS 1

ANAHEIM (AP) - Danny Duffy won his third straight start and Kansas City beat Los Angeles to stop a four-game skid.

Hunter Dozier hit a two-run double and Duffy (3-1) allowed five hits in six effective innings. The veteran left-hander from California had about 40 friends and family members in attendance. He struck out five and walked three.

Tyler Skaggs (4-4) permitted four runs - three earned - on 110 pitches in 5 2/3 innings.

MARINERS 7, TWINS 4

SEATTLE (AP) - Edwin Encarnacion made several nice plays at first base early in the game, then hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to help Seattle snap Minnesota's five-game winning streak.

Mitch Haniger and Daniel Vogelbach hit back-to-back homers off Kyle Gibson (4-2) as the Mariners ended a three-game skid, one day after an 18-4 drubbing.

Yusei Kikuchi (3-1) gave up one earned run in six innings, striking out six.

Jorge Polanco had four hits for the Twins.

GIANTS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 2, 10 INNINGS

PHOENIX (AP) - Pablo Sandoval opened the 10th inning with a pinch-hit homer after shortstop Brandon Crawford made a game-saving stop in the ninth, sending San Francisco past Arizona.

The Diamondbacks appeared to have the game won when Adam Jones hit a grounder into the hole off Sam Dyson (2-0) with a runner on third with two outs in the ninth. Crawford made a spectacular play to save the Giants, diving to his right and hopping up to make a throw that beat Jones by a step.

Sandoval had a pinch-hit homer in the eighth inning of San Francisco's 8-5 win Saturday night and added another off Yoshihisa Hirano (1-2).

Will Smith struck out the side for his 12th save in 12 opportunities.

PIRATES 6, PADRES 4

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Colin Moran hit a three-run homer and finished with four RBIs, and Joe Musgrove beat his hometown Padres for the second time in two seasons as Pittsburgh won to take three of four from San Diego.

Musgrove (3-4) was the second straight alum of Grossmont High in suburban El Cajon to beat the Padres. Steven Brault won Saturday night in relief of opener Montana DuRapau.

The big right-hander took a one-hit shutout into the seventh inning before the Padres broke out for four runs, the big blow coming on Hunter Renfroe's three-run homer.

Felipe Vazquez pitched the ninth for his 13th save.

Moran's homer off rookie Cal Quantrill (0-2) helped stake Musgrove to a 4-0 lead before he threw a pitch. Josh Bell, who homered twice Saturday night, was aboard on an RBI single.

CUBS 6, NATIONALS 5

WASHINGTON (AP) - Anthony Rizzo homered, Albert Almora Jr. had three hits and Chicago held off Washington.

Chicago led 6-1 before Washington closed to within a run on a three-run homer by Anthony Rendon in the sixth inning and a solo home run by Howie Kendrick in the seventh.

Kyle Hendricks (4-4) retired the first 11 Washington batters and didn't allow a hit until Kurt Suzuki's single leading off the fifth, but finished by giving up four runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Steve Cishek pitched a 2 1/3 scoreless innings for his fourth save as the Cubs took two of three from the Nationals and improved to 10-1-1 in their past 12 series.

Washington starter Jeremy Hellickson (2-3) allowed three runs and four hits with three walks in three innings.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Odds to win the US Open golf tournament next month:

5-1? Brooks Koepka

8-1? Dustin Johnson

12-1? Eldrick Woods

14-1? Rory McIlroy

16-1? Justin Rose

20-1? Day, Fowler, Rahm, Smith, Thomas

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: In a perfect world, where I made all the decisions??

13) Kids could go right from high school to the NBA; going to school for only one year is a farce, so if a kid goes to college, then he is there for at least two years. College baseball has that rule, but I think it is three years for them.

12) Both leagues would have the DH; this will happen in a couple years. Add a player or two to rosters, to appease the players? union.

11) NFL would have an 18-game regular season, only two preseason games; Super Bowl would be Sunday night of Presidents? Day weekend.

10) College football teams wouldn?t play I-AA opponents; SEC teams do this a lot. Last year, Alabama played The Citadel, Ole Miss played Southern Illinois, South Carolina played Tenn-Chattanooga. Seriously? Go play a MAC team or a Sun Belt team, at least.

9) Online poker would be made legal so the poker companies would advertise on TV and ESPN would start replaying the World Series of Poker again, like they used to. The stuff ESPN puts on in daytime on weekdays is mostly terrible. Mike Greenberg, Stephen A Smith both make around $6M a year, a tremendous waste of money.

Listening to talking heads in contrived arguments is a waste of electricity. Much rather watch people play cards, or replays of games, actual competition.

8) As far as college basketball transfers go, if you poach a transfer from a team, then you have to go play a game in that team?s gym. Most of the teams that poach transfers are way better than the teams they poach from anyway, but they often don?t have the onions to play road games.

By way of explanation, over the last seven seasons, Duke has played only three non-conference road games, all mandated by the ACC-Big 14 challenge. When Duke poached Seth Curry from Liberty, they should have had to go there and play a true road game.

7) I would take the radios out of NFL players? helmets; coaches have six days to prepare their teams to play. Gameday should be the players? day; let the QB?s call their own plays, which would make the game lot more exciting. QB?s calling the plays would make the game more fun.

6) I?d eliminate the American/National Leagues and go to geographic realignment, which would reduce travel costs and invigorate regional rivalries. Going to 32 teams (which will happen soon) will make scheduling a lot easier.

5) NBA playoff series would be best-of-3, with finals best-of-5. Less games, more drama; it is more interesting when the best team has a chance to lose. Would the NCAA tournament be at all interesting if a 16-seed played Duke/Kentucky best-of-3?

4) I?d get rid of the Electoral College in our presidential election; whoever gets the most votes wins, just like in all the other elections.

3) Would definitely move the NBA Draft Lottery back to a half hour before the actual draft; imagine the drama then? Lot of executives would have to think on their feet.

2) You want to make baseball?s All-Star Game more interesting? Make it USA vs the World, and it?ll become a serious game fairly quickly. Maybe too serious.

1) Would like to make people happier; nowadays, there is so much anger in the world. There is a lot less tolerance of others than there used to be. You be you, and let others do what they do. Cheer the bleep up!!!!
